    Sup All!!!

    Hey TA.

Notice you posted my WIP in your art thread. Now I have to finish it!

I just posted the following in my WIP thread the other day.

    [ QUOTE ]
    Sorry TA.

School, work, newborn son, and life in general have forced this little project to the back of the list. Sadly, I haven't eve been able to play COH in about three months.

I will have a nice break between semesters so I should be able pick up where I left off.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Glad to see you back.

What are your commission rates? I would be extremely interested. *drools over the amount of detail!*

    [/ QUOTE ]
Prices aren't discussed here. Go to their site: Guildhelper

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for the link, but how was I supposed to know his site link, and that I couldnt ask abut pricing here? There was 0 way for me to know that.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You Weren't, that's why Roxstar guided you there. I don't think he was trying to offend.

Sorry. Summertime has been hitting us hard. The kid has no desire to do anything except play outside and swim.

I have tried to prod him along by putting some storyboard ideas together. He looks at them and then asks if he can go back outside.

Please don't give up on us. We will be back.

    Static & Son

    [/ QUOTE ]

I feel ya. I picked the wrong time to start drawing again. I'm having too much fun watching my 9 month old son explore the world around him.

Of course, he is also the main reason I decided to to take up the pencil again. He is my inspiration in so many things in life now.

Enjoy your family time and come back this project when your both ready. We'll still be here.
  5. Tres cool!

I love your style. So smooth and dynamic.
  6. Quick update.

    Latest progress

Forgive the gray background. My scanner took a crap on me and I scanned this in at work real quick-like so I didn't get a chance to tweak the levels yet.

I'm having a rough time time getting all the armor peices to look symmetrical from different angles.

Still going. It should be done sometime this fall. In the meantime I'm practicing and doodling to get the "flow" back.
  7. <... in best Peter Griffin voice ...>

    "Holy crap!"

You do this with a mouse?

/* looke at own mouse . ...shakes it angrily ....sigh

I was impressed before . Now I am just flabergasted.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    My sentiments exactly.

I have always been impressed with those that can "draw" with a mouse.

    Amazing.
  9. Well...another weekend without progress.

I glanced at my work a few times this weekend trying to pick out the parts that need fixed and I think I'm ready to dive back in. I also created a character with TA's costume so I could have a "3-D model" to work from...I feel much more confident now that I have that.

Graver - Thanks for the encouraging words. Coming from someone of your artistic caliber they mean a lot to me.
  10. [ QUOTE ]
    Sure I could ink it!!!

I really need to do more inkys... that vacation killed my arty in me

    [/ QUOTE ]

Deal. When I've finished I'll let you know.
  11. [ QUOTE ]
I wish i could help you ink it, Its looking great.

But i can always give you someone else to practice on.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I've got my eye on a few other characters to practice on but I'll not name names just yet. With my current turnaround time approaching two weeks I think I'd rather just put up a finished product without torturing the subject for that length of time.

I apologize for taking so long. Its been so long since I've tried to draw for someone other than myself and between work, school, and family its tough to find the time. The good news is that, with my passion for art rekindled, I've decided to switch majors and pursue a degree in Computer Graphics Technology. Long have I yearned for a career that let me be creative and the time to pursue it is much overdue.

But its never too late, right?

Thanks again for the support and encouragement!
  12. Wow. I can only imagine the time and dedication it must take to produce these spectacular pieces of art. I'm jealous of your talent.

    Keep 'em coming.
  13. Latest Progress

I really have to overcome the urge to perfect every little line at this point. Better to forge ahead and finish the work since it will never be to my satisfaction anyway.

Since I'm just getting back into the game I shouldn't get to discouraged, eh?

Still not happy with the gauntlets and the legs. Other than that I like what I see so far.

Do I have any volunteers for inking when I'm done?
  14. [ QUOTE ]
Tracing... Not Tracing... Tracing... Not Tracing...

It really doesn't matter as long as you learn to see.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards makes a huge argument that it is not the art of drawing that's the hard part, but moreso the ability to "see" and interpret is where most people's skills need to be developed.

Fascinating read. I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their skills.

Normally it would be at this point that I would start littering the floor around my desk with wads of paper.

    * glances sideways, looking for HexGirl *

    [/ QUOTE ]

    o.O what?

Wanna see my latest pile of crumpled paper? We could make it a date hehe.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Only if you're on Liberty, Sweetie.

Let me know what you think of Stage 3

    Slow going, but I'm a perfectionist...and a procrastinator...not a good combination.
  16. I too started drawing at a very early age by tracing outlines from comic books and then filling in my own details for faces and costumes and such. That quickly gave way to freehand copying as I gained the eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity needed.

Even then I found myself tracing the basic shapes of an existing drawing, but with a different purpose. By tracing just the basic shapes of a character I could then draw in the underlying skeletal structure to get a better feel for the "flow" of the figure. I would then begin to draw, by freehand, from skeleton to shapes to details. This seemed to make my sketches much more dynamic and proportional.

See this example of a piece I'm working on for Thor's Assassin. I haven't drawn in years so I decided to use this method to help get me back in the swing of things.

The small figure in the upper left is the traced shapes to which I have added the skeleton, trying to pull out the countours and spatial relations of the limbs and torso. The large sketch was done in stages starting with the stick figure.

So to answer your question: Yes tracing can help...or it can be a crutch. It all depends on how you use it during your learning process.

PS - if you want you can check on my progress and give me any feedback, advice, or critiques you might have. Sorry for the blatant threadjack.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
    Nice sketches man!!

You need a whole bunch more in there though hehe!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I hope to be able to continue adding more...past and present.

I didn't do any work on your piece this weekend, sorry to say.

The weather here was just too nice so I spent most of the weekend outside with the wife and our son. He's just now 8 months old and its very hard to pull myself away from him.

I haven't given up though just so you know.

hey, good work so far on TA (is everyone doing TA right now? ).

    [/ QUOTE ]

lol It certainly seems so huh?

    *loves it*!

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's only because I'm on vacation. I'll be back next week and pining for pics hehe

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thats the best part about it Rowrsie!!

I didn't have to pine at all!

    [/ QUOTE ]

So true. The more fan art I saw of TA the more I felt the urge to try my hand at him. Can't explain it...its just the way it is.

My Sketchbook for anyone who would like to take a peek.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
Looking good man. I'm jumping back on the art bus today as well. I think I've got a little more work cut out for me. You look like you are on the right track. Keep it up.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The best thing I ever did, and boy did it take a long time to develop the discipline to keep at it, was to get in the habit of working from a stick figure to basic shapes and save the details for last. I know its been said time and again on these boards but there's a reason for that. Its the one thing that will make the biggest difference in the finished product.

I have more than one skecth book full of nothing but stick fiugres and balloon people...at one point I was drawing nothing but the adventures of "Balloon-Man" and "Stick Boy"...fun stuff
  20. Wow! Thanks for all the encouragement gang.

I'm soaking in all the advice and will hopefully have the a rough of the full costume done by tomorrow at the latest. I'll be going out of town today so won't have much time to work on it tonight.

    Thanks again!

In the meantime I'm thinking about posting some of my past WIPs (I don't think I've ever actually finished a peice) so you can get a sense of the style I've tried to cultivate.

    Where to Start?

    [ QUOTE ]
If your problem is commitement here is what worked for me :

1.Get a sketch book. Carry it with you along with a pen or pencil. Doodle a lot . Anything everything.

    2. Commit to specific projects. If you have friends in the game tell them you are drawing them. If you start posting here ( you said you would get a scammer eventually) show WIPs. You will get support , and because you have said you will do something it becomes more difficult to procrastinate.

    3. Read the threads here . It will get your juices flowing.

    4. Through all this have fun... That is the most important one

    just my 2 Inf.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Words to live by!

I've started tracking my own project on this forum and already I have noticed that I'm actually making time to sit and draw if only because I publicly stated that I would finish the work.

Lots of great people handing out great advice and kind words of encouragement are just the things to get the creativity working again. This forum rocks!
  22. Stage 2 - TA's Costume

Didn't take too long for me to get stuck

Here are two rough draft's I've started and gave up on already.

    One
    Two

Normally it would be at this point that I would start littering the floor around my desk with wads of paper.

    * glances sideways, looking for HexGirl *

Since, however, I have decided to take my creative process online I cannot give up as easily as I have in the past. I have promised a finished prodcut and that is what I must deliver

My biggest problems so far...the armor on the forearm, the hood, and the perspective for the gear-axe-thingamajiggy. I've always had problems determing the perspective for the accessories and scenery in relation to the figures in my drawings.

I will continue to plug away and keep my progress posted. I know there wasn't much progress for this post but I'm taking this project nice and slowww. Thanks for hanging in there with me everyone!
  23. [ QUOTE ]
    Thanks ,

more booty - That will make my wife happy - yep I see what you mean . Thanks for the good observation.

Could you also tell me for the far hand (his right hand) wich is a better placement the one in the thumbnail (lower) or the one in the rough (higher)?

    Anything else I should adjust?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think i prefer the look in the thumbnail. Lowering the far hand gives a more balanced look to the outsreatched arms.
  24. I love the pose...very dynamic. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
  25. I wish I could take credit for that pose

I searched long and hard for just the right figure to model this piece on and found this.

The devil is in the details, as they say, and I just hope my finished work can do the foundation justice.
