  1. Yeah. Welcome. I don't have much to add, except that your character's story is whatever you want it to be.
  2. Sounded like fun, I'm sorry I missed it.
  3. I've applied patch 1.956 and this is the result:

    http://www.filefactory.com/file/4yxh...signer_app_zip

    Warning: It's 195 MB !

The old link is no longer active.
  4. I have a question if there are ways to avoid the following scenario I encountered:

I was doing this story arc with a friend where you need to free some hostages, who will then start to help you fight the rest of the mobs and the end boss in the instance.

The problem that we had is that these hostages were rather trigger happy, but also relatively weak. This meant that even if I tried to tank a pull, they would usually get some hits and barely survive, also because we were fighting mobs that did a lot of AoE damage.

We first did my friend's version of the mission, and failed the mission soon after we freed the first hostage, as we weren't paying close attention to its health bar, until it died.

Fortunately we could then still do my version of the mission and try again.

Now we made sure that after each pull, the hostage(s) had a full health bar before we did the next pull. This ended up as a very painful and slow process, doing one pull, waiting a few minutes, doing another pull, waiting again, etc. Neither of us was a healer.

We tried walking back to the entrance, but the hostage(s) just kept following us around.

Is there a way to keep these kinds of NPCs out of harms way? Even with our careful and slow approach, they would often end up nearly dead.

Is sitting around waiting for a health bar creep back up the supposed challenge for this or is it just poor mission design?

The server names don't need to change, the he language messages beside them do.
I've had a very bad experience in the past with another MMO, where I started on a new server, only to find out it was an unofficial Russian server, with 99% of the community not even being able to speak much English. This was before that MMO started supporting Russian, so this was despite the interface and all quests being in English.

I'm not sure this would work.

I think a new player trying the game, and making their first character, selecting the top server (lowest population) and then entering the game, would have a really nasty surprise if they would find that the majority of the server population doesn't speak English in local and global channels.

I think giving free character transfers is probably the best solution, and then shutting down Zukunft and Vigilance and moving remaining low activity accounts to the least populated server. Or maybe move everything to the two UK servers, I'm not sure if that would work, especially Union seems to be quite busy (two yellow dots), but it might be preferred over a US server for latency reasons and because there might be more players who speak German or French. (like me).

This is the kind of information that I was looking for. Unfortunately I've already filled in the survey now.

Maybe it will be of use to someone else.

Edit: I've tried to find the video you mention in http://www.ustream.tv/channel/paragon-studios
I found some videos of the Player Summit, and I watched the "pre-lunch" one, but I didn't find any information about those powersets.

Most of these are pretty self explanatory. Water blast, must be a new power set. Cyberpunk costume - it's in the name.

The only one that threw me off was 'Halloween II" since I wasn't sure if it was referring to the new trial and stuff that had just premiered or if it was something else that I hadn't heard of, but it was the only thing that couldn't really be guessed off of context of the name.
To me the Halloween Costume Set made it quite clear it was a costume set, not a trial or something. But if I have to rate something on a scale from "Meh" to "Awesome" I need more information.

For example, I bought Titan Weapons in the market, because it sounded cool, but I didn't like its looks and animations and don't have a single character using it. (I have unused character slots). The same is true for the Gunslinger costume pack.

So my experience is that you can't go by the name to determine if something is "Meh" or "Awesome". I have since then learned to wait until there is information in the Paragon Wiki and/or people demonstrating the power on YouTube, before I consider spending Paragon Points on it.

And even then "Summer Blockbuster" doesn't mean anything to me beyond some vague association with movies that do well at the box office. I have no clue what it could mean in the City of Heroes environment unless they're planning to release a high budget movie this summer about Statesman or something like that.

At least that seems to be the case for me. Those Apple updates are the only thing I can attribute to the change, as it was the only change to my computer in at least a month or more (outside of deleting user created files and such). If memory serves one of the updates was very specific to Java. Could that cause some issues with accessing the printer settings and causing a crash?
I do remember they made some security updates to Java because of the Flashback Trojan. It was all over the news as the first time a significant number of Macs got infected by malware.

I'd find it odd that a Java update would have this effect. It could be something in the Wineskin wrapper.
  9. Well, since nobody seems to have an answer, I spent some time searching the forums and Paragon Wiki.

    - Bio Armor, Water Blasting, Nature's Affinity Power Sets - Still no clue beyond the name. Apparently I need to watch the ~40 hours of video of the Pummit to find out.

    - Magisterium Trial - Probably some new endgame content/iTrail type thing.

    - Night Ward - A First Ward like new zone currently on Beta.

    - Summer Blockbuster - Something that can/will/might happen this summer? So it's not in winter, autumn or spring.

    - Mecha Armor - Replacement for the Celestial Armor in i23. Probably looks somewhat like a Mecha?

    - Superpacks Rogues/Vigilantes - A new kind of Superpack?

    - Amplifiers - longer duration inspirations

    - Double XP Boosters - What it says on the tin I suppose.

    - Chain Mail Armor - Apparently on Beta. Probably looks somewhat like medieval chain mail?

    - Additional Enhancement trays - Could mean two things. Either it's more trays in the Store than the current 3, or it's extra trays that you don't have to pay for.

    - Cyberpunk costume - I've read a lot of Cyberpunk SciFi, but I don't know what this will look like. Probably not like a Mecha or chain mail.

    - Halloween Costume Pack II - Witches, Jack-o-lanterns and bats? That's the images that come to mind for Haloween as a European. On the wiki there is a costume set with a brain in a jar, Piranha, Vampire and Medusa hair. But that's probably Halloween Costume Pack I.

    - Hybrid slot - Lot's of stuff about this on the Beta forum. Seems to be something Incarnate-ish.

The result of this is that I've effectively given a ranking based as much on how much I know about a feature as on how much I'd like to have it. For example, I've given the Power Sets a ranking of "Meh". Maybe I would like them if I knew what they were.

A large part of my answers on the first page are basically random because of that. On the question to rank things from 1 to 15, I just made a nice diagonal line from top left to bottom right.

    --------

I really like it that you are asking your player community for feedback. But the survey itself could have been better executed. Unless the assumption is that only people who have seen the Pummit broadcast should fill in the survey, but then why point people to it from an in game message? If there are enough people like me, then you might be wasting a lot of effort on data that's too polluted with incorrect input to get any meaningful statistical results. I tried filling in the survey, but the first page is basically irrelevant.
  10. Yeah, I saw that on the news, pretty nice.

Unless I'm a noob with my mac (which I might very well be), I don't have Property List Editor. That wasn't one of my options.

So, I guess, looks like no ATOs for me until someone puts up a different version!
PropertyListEditor comes with OSX for me. It might be part of Xcode or another optional package.

I've been really busy with a deadline at work so I had no time to visit the forums or play the last couple of weeks.

I've zipped and uploaded my current Mid's, with the glitches, but with the ATOs update applied:

    http://www.filefactory.com/file/1udv...signer_app_zip 200 MB!!

If you open it, it might actually contain a character build. I don't seem to be able to print either, but I'm not sure if that worked before as I never tried it.

I'm still planning to have a look at the graphics glitches, if I can get access to Visual Studio 2010. But my job comes first, as it pays for my subscription. ;-)

Edit: I just read the rest of the thread, and I probably need to apply the update for Staff Fighting. I will make another upload when I've done that.
  13. I just want to add that I really liked the Praetorian content and story arcs. I think it wouldn't be good if those were removed. I really like my Praetorian Resistance Rogue, it's by far my favourite character.

The only problem I have with the Praetorian content up to level 20, is that there are so few people. I think it's the best looking starting area, and should be the default starting area for new players, especially non-VIP. I think it would help convert players to VIP.
  14. I'm Dutch and I play on Union with the English client, so the issue only marginally concerns me.

I understand this business decision. I'm not sure about France, but I think the market is there in Germany, although capturing it with an eight year old game would be difficult, probably impossible without a major advertising effort.

I have one point: You might want to keep a forum for these languages, even if you can't moderate it. Maybe just keeping the server forums is enough, like you plan to do, but then make sure they are marked as Zukunft (Deutsch), Vigilante (Français).

I'm Dutch and have friends in Sweden, Finland, Portugal and Hungary. These are usually all unsupported languages even in the largest MMOs. As long as you don't censor messages in those languages, as long as there are no complains, you give people from these communities the opportunity to organise themselves. I've seen many posts on forums of other MMOs in unsupported languages, usually questions for help by new players. I've answered questions in Dutch, Fench and German myself pointing people to guilds or clans of people using the same language.

Given the population numbers on those servers, I wasn't surprised. I think the market is there, but the opportunity was missed years ago, when CoH was young.

Other MMOs now have more players in the EU than they have in the USA, the potential is there. And I think superheroes and comics are well known enough in quite a few countries here. The various DC and Marvel titles and associated movies have been quite popular where I live and what I've seen in other countries. I was an avid X-men fan growing up in the eighties. It's a very international group in the comics, unfortunately much less so in the Holywood translation. I think it's too cheap to blame it on a lesser penetration of superhero comics here.

I think the potential is there. I think more for a Marvel type world than for a DC type world game design and more X-men than Captain America. The stories themselves don't need to be in a European setting to appeal to us, but I think an international team of SuperHeroes fighting for world peace has more appeal here than a more Americanized hero like Superman or Captain America. But maybe that is something to think about if we ever see a successor to CoH.

Yeah. I'm a relatively new player (Xmas 2011), and I have no clue what half the options are supposed to mean.

Right now I've stopped trying to fill in the survey. I came to this thread in the hope it had more information, I have read all the posts. Someone explained Amplifiers after the post by Gorgar quoted above.

I'm stuck on page 1, as I don't know what the options mean, and I can only make a reasonable guess for the costume suggestions (Mecha, Chain Mail, Cyberpunk, Halloween II seem to be costume options?). Night Ward, Summer Blockbuster, Hybrid Slot I have no clue what they mean. My Praetorian would love to smack the Tyrant around some, so I suppose I'd like that, I assume Additional Enhancement trays are in addition to the two extra trays you can buy now, the new Powers mentioned could mean a lot of things, and while I understand what the current Superpacks do (never bought one, I've stopped doing things like that after I stopped playing Magic the Gathering), I have no clue how a Rogue/Vigilante variant would be different.

I really can't give a proper answer if I don't know what half the options are.

I think a lot more people play Heroes because fewer people play Villains. As City of Heroes is older than City of Villains, it has a built in advantage of a more established population, SGs, Hamidon raid organisation, and has an edge in content and size.

This seems to hold even more for Praetoria, which is a virual ghost town.

One of the things that Blizzard did right in each expansion of WoW, is that they shifted the major player hubs to the new content. Blizzard still struggles with the Horde/Alliance balance on most servers though. I've seen few balanced servers. I have seen servers shift from overwhelmingly Horde to largely Alliance in a year. It seems people prefer the more crowded side and the effect reinforces itself.

I think I like the idea though. Maybe we as a community could just start organizing this ourselves, even if it means no real rewards?

In zones where it's raining, the zone itself would give your character an auto-power which shows a screen-space rain effect on your screen. The rest of the zone is completely untouched and doesn't cause any server lag other than granting powers. When you leave a zone the power isn't granted on you anymore.
Yeah, snow is hard, rain less so, unless you want flooding.

I imagine you could have strong-wind effects too if it were stylised in a way that didn't hinder visibility.
There are these papers being blown around in the Praetoria underground. They give the illusion of a breeze or draft as often happens in a real underground. They could build on that.
  18. I find it extra poor in combination with power sets that have some building effect, like Street Justice's Combo Points, or Dual blades Combination Attacks. I mind it less on something like Super Strength.

And if we're talking about Fighting, I don't like the gorilla yell. Especially on female characters, it looks painful.

But adding more powers, like the travel powers, will make it much harder to make a build. Squeezing one of the level 14 travel powers in is already a quite difficult.

Or, I make a site that uses a word that is in common use in CoH, but not necessarily in the real-world. This way, you get a commonly-used word filtered, annoying the actual players, but not the sites, wo will then just change their name again.
This alone completely negates the advantage of having such a filter. And there are too many permutations of this trick to make something against it. The spammers will always find a way around it. Many other games have tried it.

Most MMORPGs still play like that. They still adhere to the style of the 4 decades old Dungeons and Dragons pen-and-paper RPG.

I like CoH because it does not work like that, or at least a lot less so. I'm only level 37 and this is about iTrials, so I should keep my mouth shut. But I can't help but notice that feels different from the "we need a tank, a healer, a ranged DPS and a melee DPS" that is so common and really still the classic Warrior+Cleric+Mage+Thief that has defined RPGs since the seventies.
  21. I'm a new player, but I think they started the Signature Story Arc around the time Skyrim was released. You might have missed those.

Me and my friend got hooked on CoH the day he bought Skyrim. Basically while it was downloading. I don't think he's played it yet.

I recently did a performance of Phantom of the Opera, and a well trained singer or wind instrument musician can do a much more powerful shriek or bone chilling scream than your average office secretary, so if you need inspiration, that's where I'd look.
