My VIP lapsed in mid August, and as I was on holidays, I was planning to renew it this week, now that I'm back.
I don't seem to be able to resubscribe, not even just until November. -
My Fire/Fire dominator is now level 9 and going good so far.

Quote:I don't have a problem begging for things that can't be otherwise done, like this valentine mission where you need help from the other side.Heaven forbid that the developers want people to play the game rather than just repeating the same low-level content.
I do want to follow the in game stories as much as possible, playing the game instead of global chat. I'm not a big roleplayer but would like the development of my character to make sense in character. I've refused to do missions that weren' in character for my toon to do.
That's why I'm looking for a storyarc or mission to get this.
It seems that the developers are really good at hiding some content. -
Quote:I was thinking Psi/Mental for another character at some point. I will look at /Mental for Blasters. If you go with a Fire/Mental... Don't underestimate Drain Psy.. It's the best reason to take the set. It can be made perma, and do huge boosts, but it can also neuter most AVs and even GMs on the regen and recovery front, since it's a debuff, too.
And a blaster type with HUGE regen and huge +end is never a bad thing.. -
Will do. Your suggesting an Illusion/Energy Controller here?
-
There seems to be plenty time travel that doesn't award this badge. For example Cimerora.

Quote:Yeah. I think I'm going to try Fire/Fire/Fire Dominator. If you are willing to put a bit more investment into it, a fire/fire/fire dom is probably one of the most powerful 'full fire' characters I've made. The ancillary fire pool literally gives you rise of the phoenix, which somehow might work well for the phoenix theme. Whithout a lot of +recharge it's still strong, you just have to be more tactical about timing power use and how much aggro you get. Trust me, my fire/fire/fire dom can grab aggro off of just about anything. If you do this, you reeaally want flashfire/cinders ready.
Quote:The fire/thermal corruptor will be less directly powerful, but will be capable of offering better team survival and will offer far more reliable SO performance, and a greater range of distance attacks faster. You also get rise of the phoenix for others, which works.
Quote:If you want to go pure 'ranged' on a blaster, I might suggest Fire/energy, coloring the fire more light-like and the /energy more fire-colored. /Energy is a great secondary for 'pure range' blasters, giving a variety of boosts that can be used from any location. -
Quote:I'm pretty sure I did that one, I will check when I get home. It's the story where you get a clone of yourself, right? The one arc that always works is the Dark Mirror one starting at level 20 on both sides
You get access to Ouroboros when you finish the last of the two contacts, Field Agent Keith Nance and his superior Something Agent Jenni Adair for heroes and Dean MacArthur and Leonard for villains, because of what you find at the end.
Quote:Edit:
The simplest way, though, is to ask someone else to drop an ouroboros portal and use it to go to Ouroboros, collect the explore badge at the top of the building's point and voila!
Quote:I'm guessing the alternate dimension story arcs may possibly award access as well, such as the Destined One arcs in Grandville or the Praetorian arcs in Peregrine Island.
(Edit: Seems the wiki page confirms it.) -
Quote:It's funny how this thread is turning into one about Masterminds. You should try /Force Field then. That is the most "watch the show" mastermind ever while you toss out the occasional Aid Other and whatever else you want. /Sonic Resonance may also work the same, though resistance is very different for pets.
I like my Mastermind, but currently I don't have time to level another. If I go with another Mastermind, I might do Beast Mastery on a nature themed character. Force Fields might have worked with Robotics as well, theme-wise, I don't see it working so well with the other MM options. Ninja's or Ghosts with force fields - maybe it works mechanically, but for me the concept of the character is the primary motivator. Most of my ideas have worked out well enough so far, CoH is pretty forgiving in what power choices you make.
As I wrote in my OP, I had been focussing on melee characters mostly, and wanted to play some ranged characters. I now have 3 corruptors (archery/TA, Rad/Rad, Elec/Storm) that I do like, and one Blaster that I needs to run into melee too often for my taste. I do like the Fireball, Rain of Fire and the high damage output. I considered just not picking up any of the PBAoE powers and going with a lot of pool powers, like the Stuff in Medicine, but then going making a Corruptor with Thermal Radiation seems to be a stronger option.
I keep ending up with Corruptors for ranged at the moment. Originally I had planned to level one of each AT. For melee I've got a three Brutes, Scrapper, two Stalkers and an Arachnos Widow as well. No Tanker yet, but I might get to that soon. All seem to be solid melee classes and fun to play.
I tried some defenders and controllers, but things were very slow to defeat and against some enemies I had real trouble. Maybe they get better as you level, I do like the control aspect of my Elec/Storm and Archery/TA corruptors. The last one originally was a TA/Archery defender, but I remade him as a corruptor.
The Fire/Fire Blaster is my first real Blaster, and while I like the Primary, I don't like the options in the Secondary. Maybe I just don't like the mix in ranged/melee that is the Blaster class. I can't think of a concept that would work. Suggestions on what Blaster combination I might like are welcome.
I've handled some of the problems with controlling ranged enemies at the early levels by selecting missions that have mostly melee enemies, like Snakes and Legacy Chain and Lost. -
Quote:I don't really like the sounds of the Demons. One of my friends has a demon summoner. It doesn't fit the phoenix theme I'm going after at all any way.You may like a Demon Summoning mastermind then, with an emphasis on using the attacks from the primary.
All those attacks are ranged(Edit: and they are whips made of flame) while the pets do a lot of fire damage while looking like they are on fire as well.
Demons/Thermal may even fit the bill.
Demons are arguably the best mastermind pets as well.
Edit:
Don't take the "masterminds are passive" comments too strongly either. They're only as passive as you make them.
You can take attacks and more active secondaries to make them more active.
They're also not as hard to play as people say.
I do like my Robotics/Time Mastermind. She's level 29. I like the play style where you control the battlefield and then send in the droids to do the killing and you grab the popcorn and watch the show while tossing out the occasional heal or hold/slow as needed. She's all about "Nothing escapes me and my droid army! *evil laugh*". -
Quote:I will go though that list again. I've been trying to do some of the things listed there, but so far no luck.See the Entrusted with a Secret badge page. It lists all the ways you can get the badge which gives you the portal.
For example, I thought that I had done all the missions form Marshall Brass, but now we have the crystal in the base, I can check if I missed any.
I had forgotten about all the Lord Recluse's Victory options, as I don't like PvP and was around level 30 when I started trying to get this. I'm level 43 now, and maybe that's the way to go now.
Quote:It's possible to see a "complete" message for Ouroboros, but not actually be done. I've done that a couple of times. If you're still "on a TF" you're not done. Talk to the final contact. Ouroboros should end automatically and disband your TF. If it doesn't you still have a phone call to make.
I'm sure I don't have the Ouroboros Portal power.
I will check against the Paragon Wiki page again to see what my options are now. I did it around level 30, and started hunting "time travel missions" as at that point it seemed to be my main option.
I already find putting the Crystal in our base a bit of a cheat, as stoy-wise I think you should only get that after getting access to Ouroboros. -
If I keep playing this game for years, I might end up "trying them all".
Thanks for all the advice. I'd prefer going with a Fire/Fire or Fire/Thermal option, although I'll have a look at the other suggestions.
My main is a StJ/Regen Brute, next to that I have a Fire/Fire Brute, a Robotics/Time Mastermind, a Electricity/Storm Corruptor, MA/Will Stalker, Arachnos Widow, Archery/TA Corruptor and Rad/Rad Corruptor. And the aforementioned Fire/Fire Blaster.
The Electricity/Storm Corruptor is very fragile, but still a lot of fun, the others I have no survivability issues with at the moment (most are 15-30 range so that might change).
Survivability at the moment is somewhat less of an issue than fun and play style. I usually play with 1-2 friends and we try to team up in such a way that always one of us can do some tanking.
I started this thread because I reached level 20 with my Fire/Fire Blaster, and was disappointed that Fire Sword Circle and Blazing Aura were my only choices. I then had a closer look at the secondary and noticed that it's nearly all PBAoE. Having to run/fly into melee and go boom or whoosh isn't what I had in mind for this character. I wasn't planning on a "Ranged" character that had more PBAoE attacks than my Fire/Fire Brute but I started realizing that that's the way this was going.
I build my characters by making the costume and background story first, and then picking powers to go with it. One of the reasons I like CoH is that you can do that. It's my inexperience that shows in these things. I wasn't aware that Blasters were so melee heavy.
As you can see I already have some Corruptors, so I think I'm going to try the Dominator suggestions. I am a bit confused though. Some people here say that it would make a fine ranged character, others advice to stay away from Dominator if I want to be mainly ranged. I understand permaDom is a long way into the future, but something that I might want to aim for. -
I've been trying to get access to Ouroboros for a while now. As I understand it:
1) You basically need to do a time travel mission, which should give you a badge and unlock a power.
2) Or ask someone with access.
Now I don't like the second option. I would like to unlock this access through some kind of mission/story, not just asking someone in global chat. I'll do that if that ends up to be the only way to do it.
I can't find any way to do this though some kind of mission/story. There are two main things I've tried so far:
A) I've done the storyline for the Midnighters that gets you to Crimeroa.
B) I've placed a crystal in our base that gives access to old missions and did one of those story arcs. I did all missions, in the end it says "Completed Ouroboros task force" or something similar.
I'm level 43 now and have no clue what other "time travel" I could attempt to unlock this.
Any suggestions are welcome. -
Nice Idea. Bonne idée.

The event is on June the 3rd instead of May 3rd?

Quote:If he doesn't have PCIe, he probably has AGP. I don't think many computers were ever sold that only had PCI.I will assume PCIe and not PCI (sadly not even close to the same thing). Of course if you do mean PCI, you are likely to be disappointed.
Fortunately the relative performance of the 8600GTS is now considered extremely poor so an inexpensive card should be able to give you equal or even improved performance.
I would look for a GT 440 with GDDR5 memory (there are also versions with DDR3 memory but 1GB of faster memory is better than 2GB of slower, of course either is better than none). This assumes you have a PCIe x16 slot and not the much older and not really designed for a gaming video card PCI slot.
Whatever you do, stay away from the GT 520, not really meant for gaming, at all. It's significantly slower than either the GT 430 or 440.
But 8600GTS is probably PCIe. -
I asked the same question about a month ago in the Build forum:
There are several Mid's builds in there, suggested by different people, as well as my own struggles at my first ever build.

I already have a Robotics/Time Mastermind.
I was looking for a Fire themed (story about the Phoenix and such), ranged character. I understand that Dominator, Corruptor and Blaster are all not very high on survivability. I'm just a bit disappointed in the Fire/Fire Blaster, because of all the melee in the secondary powerset. I have no use for a Fire-Sworc-Circle and similar powers. I really like Rain of Fire and Fireball for their AoE effect.
Is this any different for a Corruptor or Dominator? I have several Corruptors, although not very high level, but no Dominators. -
I'm rather new to the game and I've mostly played melee characters and Masterminds.
I wanted to play a ranged character and had a nice background idea for a Fire based character, so I made a Fire/Fire Blaster.
I like the primary powers, but I find that many of the secondary powers are melee PBAoE which I don't like so much on a ranged character. I also don't like the lack of any survivability.
My character is currently level 20, but I'm thinking of deleting it and making a Corruptor or Dominator instead. I read about the Domination effect being quite useful once you have some recharge/haste so it's up most of the time.
Any advice?
Cheers,

Quote:I agree with Mutants and MastermindsOut of all of the table top super hero systems, I think it is also the simplest one. Hero and Gurps are pretty rough. The old Pladium system was cool, Heroes Unlimited which could be combined with Ninjas and Super spies and host of other Pladium books was pretty cool.
Savage Lands which is the work of a prevision CoH Dev has supplements that allow for the superhero (and every other) theme.
Hero sysem, or Fuzion system will do it best. Both are math and dice heavy though.
I like Mutants and Masterminds because it is built on the D20 system and it is easy for most people to hit the ground running with. -
Some interesting replies. I know it's relatively new content, I was levelling while most of it was released. But only now did I reach level 40 and could I do the whole story.
I agree that not all parts are equally good, but it all comes together very well in part 7. I compared it to a Superhero movie, and I think most have a plot of similar quality.
What made it great is that you really feel part of the story. Although from the comments I get the impression that it works less well if you play a Hero. The Villain story line works quite well, especially because Darrin Wade is someone you encountered in Sharkhead as well.
As to the whole Freedom Phalanx acting in or out of character. As I posted in some other feedback threads: I don't know them. I'm level 43 and haven't encountered any of them in game. The same is true for Recluse and entourage. With the exception of Ghost Widow.
Because of this I could easily justify the in game actions of my character, coming from a Resistance background, the Freedom Phalanx just seems to be Primal Earth's version of Emperor Cole and the Praetors. I have no in game reason to believe differently. I do trust Vanguard, as I worked with them in the Rikti War Zone.
Killing a major hero, after (s)he's been cunningly avoiding death for many years is always a stretch in any superhero universe. There probably is a TV trope for it. -
This is probably old news to a lot of you who have been playing this game for years. But I want to make a post any way.
I just did the Signature Story Arc for the first time. I had done parts 1 and 2 before, but only now did me and my friend Xanthos have have our first toons reach level 40.
And it's an amazing story. Within the limitations of the game engine, it's a lot of fun and you really feel like you're part of the story.
This alone is enough reason to subscribe, it took us about 20 hours to play through the whole thing, more content than some games have in total.
Except for the Paragon Wiki, I don't know who half the characters are, but even then it's a very nice story.
I'm looking forward to hopefully Signature Story Arc 2. -
Hmmm. I would have expected more responses.

Quote:Yeah. Timezones and the silly AM/PM clock. So this is from 1:00 on Friday to 1:00 on Saturday in CET ?Ah, thanks the Chad and Tenzhi. That makes more sense. You see, to me 12:00AM Thu is the start of Thu, not the end. So it's from 12:00AM Fri to 11:59PM Fri. This would be less confusing (for me) if you used the 24hr clock. That way it would be from 00:00 Fri to 23:59 Fri. No AM/PM silliness to factor in along with Time Zones.
