Quote:Thank you, Tenzhi, for pointing out the true flaw in my argument. I had honestly and completely forgotten that, even prior to CoH:F, there was indeed a warning message about new character slots added to specific servers not being transferable to other servers. That's your argument based on what? They tell you the slot is immovable once placed. They didn't force you to switch servers, nor choose for you where the slots were placed, and I doubt they are forcing you to cancel your sub.
I agree that being able to move slots would be a great QoL improvement (and that, as long as the slot is empty, there should be little to no charge). But there's nothing immoral or unethical or even unacceptable about *not* being able to move them. All of your cited issues are being brought upon you by your own actions and choices with full knowledge (or the easy potential of it) of the consequences.
So here I must eat crow. I was indeed previously warned about the risks associated with adding slots to Virtue. I was not forced to place them there, nor was I forced to switch, nor am I being forced to cancel my sub. NCSoft/Paragon is not being immoral or unethical in any way, shape, or form: they are being consistent both before and after the implementation of Freedom; therefore, I am wrong to accuse them of such. I apologize for doing so. I am man enough to admit when I am wrong and to face the consequences accordingly.
That said, as you even concurred, it would be a nice QoL improvement for NCSoft/Paragon to offer players the option of moving empty character slots from one server to another, for either no charge, or for a nominal charge that's less than those of purchasing additional character slots (480 pts) or transferring equipped characters (800 pts). Does 100 pts per empty slot transfer sound like a fair price?
I'd like to thank all of you who listened to my concerns and offered constructive criticism. I enjoy a good discussion and a lively debate, even when I don't win the argument (which is usually the case :-P ). -
Quote:Actually, I disagree with you: there is a point to all of this. The nut of the issue is that they're charging you twice for the same slot, the only difference being the server on which it is located. There's an initial cost/price for creating a character slot on a server in the first place. But then the question is there really any additional cost involved in moving that empty slot to a different server, versus creating an additional empty slot on a different server.Since they charge for moving characters between servers, it seems logical that they would charge for moving character slots to other servers (to pay for the cost of developing a service that a relatively small number of players would actually use).
They've probably discussed this very thing, and decided that the price they'd have to charge for this new service would be the same as buying a new character slot. Which makes the whole thing rather pointless.
There's no "new service" involved in my request to MOVE one (1) single empty slot from server A to server B. There's no net gain in it for me, and no net loss in it for them. They deduct one empty character slot from server A, and add one empty character slot to server B: that's NOT the same net cost/price as creating a new, second slot on a different server. And that's not the same net cost/price as copying a created/equipped character from one server to another, either (that entails moving a significant quantity of actual data).
As a paying customer for years prior to CoHF, I paid for/earned a total of 17 character slots on Virtue on this particular account. We loyal subscribers were told that we would not lose anything we'd bought or earned when Freedom went live. And officially, technically, we haven't -- NCSoft has been true to the letter of that law.
But here's where that's become less than an ideal bargain, in this particular case. Yes, I still have 17 character slots on Virtue, as a VIP. But 12 of those come with my VIP status -- only 5 of them were bought/earned with veteran rewards or points. So when that account reverts to Premium, only 5 will remain available for me to play, and ONLY ON VIRTUE.
But I don't play on Virtue any more. I've made new friends and joined a new SG on Liberty. So I've got 5 useless slots on Virtue: I bought/earned them long ago, but now they have no value to me. I'm merely trying to salvage some value out of these slots: they do me no good on Virtue, but they'd be well used on Liberty.
Because I had nothing on Liberty prior to CoHF, I had no unlockable slots without VIP status. Consequently, I had to burn both of my 2 Globals and spent my last 400 points on 2 more slots (there's a sale), just to get a total of 16. Subtract 12 when my VIP runs out, and I'll be left with only 4 slots on Liberty. So on this account, I will never be able to play any more than 4 characters there *unless* I either:
(a) spend money to buy more slots on Liberty; or,
(b) spend money to transfer characters from Virtue to Liberty.
Is that technically correct, right, legal? Yes, absolutely, no argument there.
Is that ethically or morally right or acceptable? I don't think so -- that's my argument.
That's what's stuck in my craw about this whole thing. That's what's bothering me. For years I stuck by NCSoft/Cryptic/Paragon Studios. Yes, I've done my share of stone-throwing, but generally, I've been more supportive and positive than negative. I've always appreciated how NCSoft/Paragon seemed more sensitive and responsive to the players, unlike so many other MMO companies that we could all name with loud cursing and gnashing of teeth.
But here is one example of where it seems like NCSoft is acting *precisely* like those other MMO companies we all loathe so intensely, those whose primary concern is for milking as many microtransactions out of their players as possible, with little regard for their feelings or relationships or enjoyment.
Is it really too much to ask that players be allowed to move empty character slots to different servers? I mean, it's tedious enough as it is to have to have strip and delete characters to make alts anyways: isn't that sufficient enough a cost for the privilege of moving the slot to a different server? -
Thanks for moving this thread to the appropriate forum. I do appreciate the assistance.
Although I must say that I'm a bit disappointed that it's buried in a section called "For Fun!". To me that implies that my concerns won't be taken seriously, nor be given significant merit or consideration. This might seem like a minor or trivial concern to some people, but it really is quite important to me, and I suspect it might be of interest to many others. Because I have reached the end of the line as far as I could by going through the Support Incident route, it seemed to me that the logical next step would be to communicate my concerns here on the forums. I am a paying customer after all, so as a VIP Subscriber I enjoy full posting privileges on these forums and agree to follow the Forum Rules and Guidelines.
This situation has left a bad taste in my mouth. It seems to me that NCSoft cares more about squeezing a few more bucks out of me than it does about satisfying me as a customer. It's such a minor thing, but it has such a major effect -- don't they realize that they'd easily get a few more bucks out of me if they keep me happy (I did mention that I shelled out $100 for points 8000 points already, right)? Instead, the harsh reality of it feels like a cold slap in the face. Consequently, I'd rather not give them another dime. I think I've paid quite enough for now, thanks. It's not that I haven't enjoyed the products and services for which I've paid: I have indeed done just that. But now that I more completely understand the nature of our business relationship, now that I know where the boundaries are, I'll be sure to stay well within them, as clearly defined by NCSoft, thank you.
So I decided to cancel my second VIP subscription (I am keeping my first one active), and I choose not to purchase any more Paragon Points. I will simply continue to accrue those incidental points and transfer tokens that come with the single VIP subscription, and use those to transfer and/or acquire the slots I want on Liberty. If that's how NCSoft wants me to play the game, then that is indeed how I shall play it.
In the meantime, it seems I now have extra gaming money to spend elsewhere. I wonder if SW:TOR is any fun? -
I'm sorry, but I can't seem to find any link to a "Suggestions" forum? Because this issue relates to CoH: Freedom, I figured this was the best place to post my concerns. However, if you could redirect me to a better location, I'll be glad to post there, instead. Thanks!

Once a player unlocks a character slot on a specific server, it stays on that server forever, and cannot be moved to another server. If they ever want to play on a different server, there are only these options:
1. Character Slot Purchase: at 480 points for 1 or 800 for 2, that's at least $10.
2. Character Transfer: 800 points (at least $10) or earned monthly with VIP.
3. Become a VIP: $15 per month.
There is no approved mechanism for a player to move an unlocked slot from one server to another. I opened an Incident with The Support Team, which confirmed this. I think that this policy is unwise at best, and perhaps unethical at worst. I believe that this is a short-sighted mistake that offends me as a player (a VIP) and ultimately hurts the game in the long run.
First, let me make it clear that I am talking about empty "Create Character" slots. I am not talking about created/equipped character slots: that's a value-added service that can and should cost points. This topic of this thread is limited to only empty character slots.
I do not see how NCSoft loses anything by making it easy or convenient for players to move unlocked/empty character slots among different servers. If anything, doing so would encourage such players to play MORE, because it gives them the mobility to seek out and find the server the best suits their needs and/or gives them greatest enjoyment from the game. If the player is playing on a server that makes him/her happy, then they're more likely to stay there, keep playing, keep shopping, keep buying points, etc. This is ultimately the best outcome for CoH and NCSoft.
But if the player is "locked-in" to a specific server that somehow becomes dull or even hostile, then what recourse does the player have? Can they easily move to another server? No, not really. Yes, they might have a transfer token, or might be willing to buy one, but how will they choose a destination? Without the ability to freely sample the other servers with a new character, why would they gamble a transfer token, points, or real cash on a new server, sight unseen?
No, it makes far better sense to give the player the option of using one of the empty slots they've already unlocked, instead. Allow them to move it from server A to server B, so they can at least try it out. What difference does it really make if the unlocked slot is on or the other anyway, as long as the net number of slots is the same?
I understand that it's completely within their rights for NCSoft to define how players are allowed to create and use character slots on the servers: I don't disagree with that, nor that they are wrong to do so. I'm just saying that this may not be right or best, either. It might be better and smarter for NCSoft to give their customers a bit more flexibility, so that they might enjoy their products and services more, and as an incentive to spend more money on those products and services.
I've been playing CoH since November 2004. I'm a 5+ year veteran VIP with 4 accounts (2 VIP, 2 Premium/Free). Since CoH Freedom went live, I've purchased 8,960 Paragon Points ($100 USD, apart from those included with VIP). So I want to make it clear that I'm not complaining about money, begrudging NCSoft any money, or whining about getting something for nothing.
Thanks for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Ralph S. Thomas

Are there any plans to make the Paragon Market™ accessible by means other than the City of Heroes game client, e.g.: regular web browser, iPhone/iPad app, Android app, etc.? I'd love to be able to browse around and/or buy items while I'm killing time with my smartphone, but don't have time for/access to the full CoH game client.
It might also be nice to have web/iPhone/Android apps that allow access to character inventories and the WW/BM auctionhouse, too. But I'm thinking that's probably a tough ask, given current tech. That would be a nice-to-have in the future. Heck, I'd even be willing to pay for that app (less than $5-10 please).
Basically, I'm pointing out that NCSoft/Paragon Studios has an opportunity to add value to the product by giving customers alternative methods for doing the "housekeeping" kinds of stuff that's in the nature of MMORPGs: buying new features/content, managing inventory, and working the player economy. -
Quote:I agree completely. My son's teacher once argued against tattoos with this: "Remember, when you were 5, you thought Barney was awesome."My only concern with a game based tattoo is eventually the game will go away and this will have been but a brief (hopefully) moment in your life. Aren't there other things with more meaning to get a tattoo about?
When I was 18 I wanted a Wolverine tattoo on my leg. I waited and waited, then realized when I'm 50 or 60 would it still mean the same or anything. So I haven't gotten it. I've also designed a few other tattoos and while some would work I haven't gotten them yet. The one tat I have now was done hastily and I have been trying to figure a way to do a cover up for a long time now.
So my point is, make sure it's something you REALLY want and will enjoy for a long time (basically forever). But if you do get one let us see!
That's one of many reasons I resisted getting -- or allowing my kids to get -- a tattoo. But my daughter was quite insistent, and she said that she was going to get one when she turned 18 anyway (in just 2 months). I've always told my kids that once they turned 18, they could make their own decisions about things like this. So rather than fighting it any more, I thought, "why not use this as a bonding opportunity?" My little girl is all grown up now. She graduated at the top of her class with a 4.0 GPA, and earned a scholarship to college. She's been a great kid, so why not have one last bit of fun together before she moves on with her life?
I knew I wanted my tattoo to be something I'd still appreciate in 20 years. I know that CoH probably isn't going to last much longer (that it's been 7 years at all amazes me). But I've been playing it since 2004, and it's honestly my only "hobby", so to speak. So I figured why not get a tattoo that represents that hobby, and can also remind me of my family? That's how I decided on Star 6.
There was one other CoH design that I considered: the classic/original City of Heroes/Statesman icon (see below). Like Johnstone, I couldn't decide on any one AT's symbol, because I've enjoyed playing almost all of them. My main is a Blaster, but I also love my Tankers, Scrappers, Masterminds, and EATs. I've had and enjoyed many alts of many builds over the 7 years I've played CoH, so I couldn't pick just one -- and I definitely wasn't going to get 14 tattoos. So I figured the original CoH/Statesman icon would cover them all. But ultimately, I decided that was a little too generic. Star 6 won because it represented CoH, my main CoH character Rathstar, and also my family. And the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that I made the right choice.
-
I bit the bullet and got a CoH tattoo on my left bicep, at the prodding of my oldest daughter. I let her have one as a graduation present, and she talked me into doing it, too. After much consideration, I decided on one inspired by the "Star 6" chest detail. Star 6 is the logo of "Rathstar", my level 51 Energy/Energy Blaster Hero (my first CoH character, created in 2004).
Star 6 is appropriate for Rathstar and my tattoo because:- The 5 points of the star represent my 5 awesome kids.
- The background ring represents my awesome wife, who binds us all together.
- The nautical star is a tribute to my Dad, who was a sailor.

Quote:Why? Because I think it would be easier/faster for the devs to Origin-lock the animations for the Medicine pool than to create some kind of a whole new mechanism for selecting custom animations for individual powers, beyond what they've already done for the Primary and Secondary power sets. Why? If you want more options, then give me a choice between them, don't make that choice for me. I'm all for power pool customization, but origin-locking that customization strikes me as the worst way to go about it.
Not that creating a new mechanism for doing just that is a bad thing: I like the idea, too. However, I see that as something that the devs could write off as "too hard" or "too much effort for too little benefit", and we get nothing, instead.
I'm just trying to head that off at the pass, by offering an "easier" option: assign an animation set according to Origin, under the covers, without a complex user interface. -
Minor thing: can we update the /em cellphone emote with a 21st century phone, please? The current one looks like we bought it in 1985, and haven't upgraded since.
Also: maybe a new /em smartphone emote that looks like we're thumbing through text messages or web pages on a Blackberry or iPhone, instead of holding it up to our heads to listen? Does anybody actually talk on their phones any more, these days? -
Here's kind of an off-the wall suggestion: why not make some animations and/or emotes that are Origin-specific? Currently, a character's Origin is irrelevant, for the most part.
For example, Caemgen mentioned that the "tricorder" gizmo animation from the Medicine pool power was incongruent for their character of Magic origin. What if the animations for the Medicine pool power was linked to the character's Origin, instead? That way, Aid Other could have these different animations:
- Technology - the original "tricorder" gizmo
- Science - a different gizmo with a different animation
- Magic - character casts a spell with a fancy rune (like from the MM Demon set)
- Natural - character tosses a bandage roll or first aid kit (like from the MM Merc set)
- Mutation - character lobs a blob of "healing goo" onto target
-
Somebody just mentioned "suburbs" and that rang a bell with me. I've often thought about how it would be interesting to have a "suburban" zone (or sub-zone), with cookie-cutter houses and cul-de-sacs, that was crawling with super-powered villains or invaded by Rikti.
Of course, such an area would also need some larger structures to serve as mission platforms, so they'd need schools, shopping centers, warehouse stores, community centers, libraries, police and fire stations, etc.
There should be Paragon equivalents of big box stores like Wal-Mart, Costco, Fry's, Best Buy (Buy More!), etc. -
Been playing for 6 years now, and one of the biggest things that has annoyed me since Day 1 is simple: the doors. We use them constantly, but we take them for granted: they are how we enter almost every indoor mission.
All of the doors are the same on every building, no matter what style of architecture. That's just so wrong. Different styles of buildings should have different kinds of doors. The doors that are in-game now are perfect for the small shops, but they're wrong for all of the other building styles.
Big office buildings should have big glassy vestibules. Small apartment buildings should have small wooden doors. Federal-style buildings (like City of Hall) should have ornate brass-, copper-, or iron- clad doors.
And even if you didn't change the shape of the current doors (that might require too much art work effort), you could apply a wider variety of textures or colors: glass, wood, steel, brass, copper, wrought-iron, etc. Doors also can have writing and logos printed on them, too.
It's such a piddling little thing, but changing simple details like that can go a long way to improving the charm and immersion of the environment. -
Oh, I didn't think to check the Community Digest: I checked here and Dev Digest, but missed that one. Thanks!

Is the Training Room down today (2/24/10 @ 4:43 PM US-Central)? I've tried logging on repeatedly, and keep getting this error:
Quote:I can login to Virtue now, and I was last logged on to TR this morning at around midnight. So my account status is good, and my computer configuration hasn't changed since then. I don't see a post here about any down-time today? The game client was unable to connect to the login server. This may be due to a local network issue such as a firewall block, or may be because the login server is down for maintenance. Please check your network settings and try again, or check http://www.cityofheroes.com/servers/index.html for current server status. -
I've noticed that I still cannot buy level 15 nor 20 Endurance Modification or Damage Resistance DOs (dual-origin Enhancements) from the AE Ticket Vendor. When can we expect this to be fixed? Thanks in advance for a prompt response!

Gospel! I've gotten into the habit of not using a small yellow unless I have another Insp to use after it, because it seems like I always MISS! right after using it by itself. But it seems like I never miss if I proc another Insp after the yellow. So it's always yellow+red or yellow+purple or yellow+etc. :-P

Is the Mission Architect Accolade called Vitalize bugged? I earned the accolade, but I can't see it, or figure out how to use it? Thanks!

You know you could simply fail that mission on purpose, right? Simply enter the mission, and wait for the timer to run out, or for Snaptooth to destroy the portal, whichever comes first. The mission fails and you exit, and return to DJ Zero. Just don't take any more missions from him, and you're done.
At least, that's what I did. -

Anyone ever wonder what it would be like if you were on a team with a dev?
Look for the guy, speaking complete proper English, in a comic-book-esque outfit, with an interesting bio, who happens to know EXACTLY what to do.
I might also help to later attempt to duplicate their outfit. If all of that is true (except the last one, that may well be false), you've narrowed it down to the fact that they're either a dev, a smart player, or possibly a ninja. More than one of these may apply, depending on who the dev was, and if you teamed with a Stalker.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nah, that's too obvious -- devs are smarter than that. They probably roll toons with d00dsp34k names like "Ub3rL33tz0rz", and write garbage like "I wuz born a mutnat and I killed my parents cuz they sucked" in their bios, just to throw us off... -

As I mention in my previous post in this thread, Dominators desperately need faster Activation and Recharge, as well as lower Endurance costs. Instead of a straight/flat +Act/+Rech/-End buff, how about a gradual +Act/+Rech/-End buff that scales upward as Domination mojo is accrued?
[/ QUOTE ]
As weird as it is to be replying to my own post, an off-topic, but related thought just occurs to me. We could do the same/similar thing with Blasters -- except in reverse. As the Blaster's health decreases, he gets a gradual +Act/+Rech/-End buff, too -- not just the +Dam from Defiance.
That might actually make Defiance more palatable/useful. I dunno. Just a thought. I hate Defiance. Oh well. It doesn't really apply here. Whatever. -

We've got a nice tweak to the Domination ability coming down the pipe (it will crank up your Mez resistance while it is active), and are currently data-mining PvP to see what effect our last set of tweaks to the AT have had.

Thanks for the mez prot tweak: it's a good start. Another idea also popped into my head -- what do you think of this?
As I mention in my previous post in this thread, Dominators desperately need faster Activation and Recharge, as well as lower Endurance costs. Instead of a straight/flat +Act/+Rech/-End buff, how about a gradual +Act/+Rech/-End buff that scales upward as Domination mojo is accrued?
This would make Domination similar to the Brute's inherent power Fury, which gradually buffs Damage, instead. Obviously, this buff would peak when Domination is triggered -- perhaps even go away entirely, because Domination itself is already such a great self-buff, there's little need to augment it with +Act/+Rech/-End, too (but a boy can dream, can't he?). Once Domination wears off, and the mojo bar is reset to 0, the new buff resets to 0, too, and starts building again.
The lore explanation to back this up is this: "As the Dominator's destructive glee increases, his excitement compels him to attack faster and faster, and his adrenaline flows freely, reducing his exertion."
The gradual +Act/+Rech/-End buff doesn't have to be dramatic: a small enough percentage to be noticeable, yet not overpowering, should be sufficient. Perhaps it can cap out at +33% or something, so that it's the equivalent of a single SO. Heck, even +20-25% would be nice.
Such a simple thing would go a long way to improving the "Jekyl" side of the equation, before Domination is triggered, without totally unbalancing the "Hyde", afterwards. What say you? -

States plays a plant/psi Dom (I think), I don't know what level he is yet. Around the end of April, I started a Fire/Energy Dominator on Justice. I'm level 37 now.
Fun? You bet, and I've played all the AT's in both games at pretty much every level. Dominators are definitely my cup of tea.
States and I -still- keep a close eye on Dominators. Datamining supports SOME of the claims made on these boards, but refutes others. Personal experience with the AT also lends credibility to some of the complaints, while showing others are simply blown out of porportion.
I read a bunch of the posts in this thread, not all of them though (yet). A lot of users hit the nail on the head when stating that you can't think of Dominator as "CoV's Controller". We went through a lot of effort to make sure that the ATs played and felt different between the two games. Dominators give up a bit of control for some good direct damage attacks that Controllers would give their left mouse button for.
Then of course there is the Domination ability, which is the real Jekyl and Hyde of the AT. A mild-manner Dominator with a full Domination bar can, at his or her discretion, become an unstoppable machine of destruction and control. While it never lasts "long enough" (even I am disappointed at hearing the sound effect of it wearing off), I've had missions where I have gotten Domination off four times from mission-entry to having Mission Complete appear on the screen. Good times indeed.
We've got a nice tweak to the Domination ability coming down the pipe (it will crank up your Mez resistance while it is active), and are currently data-mining PvP to see what effect our last set of tweaks to the AT have had.

Posi, thanks for replying to this thread. My "main" villain is a GravEnergy™ Dominator, currently at level 26. The first 20 levels of that were extremely tough, and although it's better now, it's still not easy to play and level a Dom -- especially not when compared to the other ATs.
I have only 2 requests to help "fix" Doms:
<ul type="square">[*]Reduce Endurance Costs[*]Reduce Animation/Recharge Times[/list]I hate that I have to train Stamina and Hasten in order to play my Dom: I thought we were trying to do away with "must have" powers?
I'd appreciate additional damage output, but I understand that this probably isn't possible/practical, without upsetting AT balance, or turning Doms into "Blasters with Holds" (and of course we can't have that now, can we?). So if you're going to keep our damage output at current levels, at least speed us up a little, and reduce our "overhead".
Thanks for your time and attention! -

I did that a couple of weeks ago, while waiting for I7. I was amazed by how EQ2 has changed for the better since it was released 2 years ago. I tried it back then, before I played CoH, and I absolutely loathed it. Later, I played CoH, and I've been here ever since.
Until two weeks ago. Now, I'm splitting my time between CoH/V (I refuse to say "CoX") and EQ2. At least it's something to do when there are unexpected outages, that's for sure.
