with barrage and bonesmasher coupled with taunt you can afford to get and slot more primary powers as you have your bread and butter secondaries up until lvl 35 the only secondary attacks i have are Barrage, Bonesmasher, Taunt, Whirling Hands & Build Up
-
Taunt in many eyes is a 'must have' power for the AT that is designed to be a barrier between the mobs and the squishies the power choices of some new tanks can be questionable at times but i've noticed they learn the hard way some don't make it past lvl 16 and mabye it's for the best but those that do often go on to be future team aggro magnets and i salute them
-
in your opinion Kimuji
i love whirling hands for PvE tanking so it's AoE moderate but slot with damage and combine with build up can whittle down mobs with easy whilst taking out the lt's and bosses with your harder single attacks
-
Looks like cognito covered most aspects of tankers like you said you've not lvl'd your tanks up to a point were shields are slotted and with SO enhancements thus not reaching their full potential i've played with Fire/EM/SS and they are all good secondaries i'm biased toward Invul/EM as it's my favourite
Alot of tanker powers are trial and error to find what works for you so take what you want if you don't like it respec for something that will go with your tank the guides on here will help with slotting and most good choices for primary/secondary -

post has kinda grinded to a halt my fault really haven't had much to time to devote to it between work and actually play CoXbut had a brainstorm the other day about recording demos of tanker tactics and sets to 'show' our would-be protectors what life is like when you hit the high levels, would also include if i have the time demos of herding tactics, tanking strategies for AV's dependent on your set or just in general would be quite a project...
so would anyone know of a good program for video editing free or otherwise i'll make my decision then
[/ QUOTE ]
you could just use the in-game Demo Recording, cant remember the commands for it atm but i'm sure someone else knows them..
Or you can use Fraps, its a free program for video capture, available from www.fraps.com.
Note on Fraps: To do "videos" from the game your gonna need a very good comp spec-wise or it'll lag you to death even when running on the lowest setting.
Not sure about the in-game Demo Record though, never used it myself

Have a pretty hardcore machine so no worries about lag
as for taunt slotting Phobos has 3 taunt duration 2 recharge and it holds aggro pretty solid -

Heroes don't have to contend with the likes of the dreaded longbow nullifier post 40 sonic grenade stacking ftl
unless you have a mind control dominator hehe
-
i'm not picky about what i come up against in PvP if it moves it's getting punched but to answer the OP's question my biggest trouble is Scrappers mainly /regen
-
if possible i wouldn't mind participating in tonights perimeter guard it's been a while since i graced the hive with my presence and i need a fix with some of those delicious hami-muffins
-
thx for the info on stone armour sinergy couldn't finish the edit on my post till i got home and it expired d'oh but to finish what i started...
my experience with Invul & EM has been a memorable one with my current setup i tank, herd & lay down some serious damage EM blooms at 38 with both the extremes under you belt. total focus afaik is a mag 3 disorient/hold and energy transfer is your hardest hitting attack the drawback is it takes 10% of your health and puts it into attack power most tanks make due with dull pain or their equivilent primary heal but some have resorted to taking aid self to counter the hp drain...
Invul offers you one of the highest resistance to smashing and lethal damage to a lesser extent fire, cold, energy, negative, toxic and has no psi resistance. it does have defence to work with but require enemies in melee range and will get the biggest buff from the first enemy attacked in melee combat. -
Was sitting in work and looking over the tanker section and noticed a few people asking about various sets, powers etc so i decided to create this thread dedicated to those of us that stand in from of the bullets and take the pain and do it with a smile(ok mabye on the inside
)
In this thread we will hopefully dicuss Playstyles, Sets, Slotting & Tactics to help up and coming tankers and mabye even some old school ones help protect paragons little ones from getting faceplanted...
To start with i'm going to give my 2 inf on the sets i've been using for the last 2 years
Primary Set - Invulnerability
consists of the following(no particular order):
Resist Pyshical Damage
Temp Invulnerability
Dull Pain
Unyielding
Resist Element
Resist Energies
Invinciblity
Tough Hide
Unstoppable
Secondary Set - Energy Melee
consists of the following:
Barrage
Energy Punch
Bone Smasher
Taunt
Whirling Hands
Stun
Energy Transfer
Total Focus
*this guide is incomplete* -
Unstoppable is a power that looks great and makes you feel like you could aggro the world and come out smelling like a rose bush just before i8 i respec'd it out of my tanker 'worst mistake ever!' i missed it really bad and was back in there once i obtained a freespec from the new issue as a long time user you will be able to determine when and where it is need and the more recent 'blinky' system allows you time you rest or cheese it from combat when it's gonna crash...
my recommended slotting 3 Recharge 1 resistance -
bah working all day saturday or else i would be there not done a SSTF yet
-
I agree with hammer the opinions on invul are varied my opinion would be take everything in the invul set might aswell have the most damage mitigation possible this has and continues to work for me and my playstyle as a tanker your primary role is simply this... "You Take The Hits Keep The Aggro & Remain Unappreciated Until The Team Wipes Then It Becomes Your Fault & Not The Player Who Couldn't Wait For The Herd"
It's a hard life but the life of a meatshield -
Calling for nerfs on the basis that your always on the receiving end of X power is silly and follows the same pattern for many people who gets beat down in PvP threads like this shouldn't exist...
-
In case of any last minute dropout or no shows i will be available with my lvl 50 Bot/FF MM
-

To some extent I guess it's the old team tank versus soloer/scranker choice - do you want to be able to take an entire team's worth of damage while higher output ATs take the mobs down, or do a significant part of the takedown yourself at the expense of a bit of robustness?

Agree 100% there standoff -
The following is a close copy of my current build some powers are not in the same order i got them same goes for the ehancements as i lost the orginal build in a re-format
And i think what godfall was trying to say was that some attacks have more than one dmg type like Energy melee does Smash/Energy you'll be protected against the smash part but the energy will hit you for alot more with little or no resistance to it especially in PvE were it will come into play later on against enemies like Freakshow, Malta, Crey, Praetorian minions e.g. clockwork rad/electric etc

It has elements of both i agree and Pre-i5 the defence/resistance was second to none but afterward i needed to be conservative with my build and my current build works and is viable you amount of toggles you plan on taking is a waste of end i have tried tough and weave with focused accuracy after i5 in an attempt to compenstate what i found was i was running out of end very quickly my slotting was overstretched and in general was 'gimped' compared to what he is now people rarely notice what i do because i do it well just trying to give my opinion on a powersets i know quite well having a lvl 50 invul/em tank and a lvl 50 em/invul brute and currently working on a ss/invul brute on defiant currently lvl 38 when i can get round to posting my build i can only hope you will see what i am trying to say
-
my lvl 50 tank is invul/em
and is a seasoned veteran being my first toon and has been active and played for near 2 years
-
an invul tank relies on resistance i would surmise that this build would be very end heavy tough and weave combined with temp invul/unyielding/invincibility will have you gasping for breath very quickly and the cost to properly slot them and add endredux is a waste imo i tried a similar build once changed it and never looked back try if you must but i'm sure you will come to a similar conclusion
-
my tank hasn't needed it granted the hp drain can be tiresome but having DP handy and a few greens you should be good to go
-
Hey guys just coming over from onion and need some inf for my villain if any of you are available to trade please leave your global and i will get in touch i am able to transfer inf to any toon hero or villain on union
Thanks -
There are 2 powers in the FF set that are capable of this Repulsion Field and Force Bubble and having a lvl 50 Bots/FF MM i know 1 of these powers as i don't take repulsion field so that leaves force bubble it's not completley without flaws as there are powers that resist repel like unyielding from the invul set
-
Quite true hammerfall as they are completley oblivious to the meaning of the word n00b and it's origins
