I've grabbed a couple names for a future DP character, and I'm going through all my folks, seeing if it fits for any of them to switch sides, but nothing big yet. It's still a ways off, after all.

Unnecessary Solicitation: Newbie, if the next two words out of your mouth aren't 'See ya' then the third word will be 'Oh my god. My crotch. You've punched me in my crotch.

Squeee!
Ahem... I mean, cool! Man, my hard drive should fail catastrophically more often, all sorts of neat things happen when I get finally get back online! The art forum is my favorite part of this community, everyone here is always so generous and kind. Big congratulations to EnnVee, thanks to Caemgen for an awesome contest, and thanks to Foo for needing money! -

My views on commissioning are similar to Kai and Eddy_Swan's. I'm a starving college student on a pretty fixed income, and any money for purely fun stuff like art is what (if anything) is leftover at the end of the month. Sales are important to me, since it usually takes a few months of saving up to afford a commission, so if someone is having a half-off deal, I want to know about it. There are some artists whose work I admire greatly, but their prices are just too high for me to realistically consider them.
When I can afford something, I'll try to "buy local", but not simply because they are local. The "local" folks are active players, so I can feel confident they will have a good grip on what costumes and settings look like, and let them have a little more freedom with the design. They post a pretty wide variety of art, show off WiPs and comment about what kinds of characters they enjoy drawing, what their strong and weak points are, etc. It makes it easier to match up a character with an artist who will really make them shine. I know it's technically just a "I give you money, you give me a pretty picture" business deal, but if I can, I want the artist to enjoy working on my art.
That said, there are a lot of great artists on deviantart, and if an opportunity presents itself there, I'm certainly going to take advantage of it if I can. I don't see a sale announcement thread as terribly threatening. It's dropped off a little as of late, but there used to be a fair number of threads just announcing goings-on over on deviantart, things like "John Becaro's having a sale!" would get posted without driving local artists out of business. All this will do is consolidate those announcements. I dunno, just the 2 inf. of a guy who enjoys this forum a lot, even if I don't post that much. -
Jeez, hard choice is hard, and pre-congratulations to whoever wins! This is a cool idea, and all these scenes look cool in my head.
All right, if I have to pick, I'll vote for...
1. VexXxa and Caemgen
and
2. The Lounge Crooner and Fenian Girl -
Don't apologize, man! It's awesome! I've wanted to have a more... disturbing option for her for a while, this works perfectly.

I guess 15.

#2. Daybreaker Alpha matched with Astro-Bolt.
The scene: A debris-filled street, the site of a battle with a lot of collateral damage. Astro, hovering and slightly behind the action, throwing out a protective shield around them while Daybreaker Alpha trashes some mooks in the foreground (the Council and 5th Column are always great for that kind of thing.). -
I love this idea!
I'd like to see Fenian Girl paired up with Hex Sign.
The scene: The middle of a fight somewhere over Paragon, say Steel Canyon or Talos. Hex, whose magic comes entirely from spells and symbols she's learned, throwing out everything she can think of to avoid being overpowered by Fenian Girl's more "natural" magic. -
I was paired up with obijuan, who gave me El Hijo del Sol to work with. Here's the original version:
I liked the bio too much to change it, and I can't take off a luchadore's mask, but the way I figure, even the greatest champion of justice sometimes needs to go undercover, to become someone dark, forbidding, someone criminals will trust and let into their plans. Sometimes, you need to become a heel.
Here's my version, El Hijo del Diablo.

Cool idea, this should be fun. Good luck to all who enter!
Now, let's see. I'll guess Ireland and Mongolia. -
Aww. It's creepy and tragic and sweet, all at the same time.

These things must be done scientifically, you need to be logical and systematic. Therefore, I put all the remaining numbers in a hat and pulled out 63. Surely, such a complex method is a surefire way of winning! *Nods sagely.*
Also, big congrats to whoever does win, and major thanks to Caemgen for his generosity in putting on a very cool and fun contest.

Well, it worked for Jophiel (Congratulations!), so I'll try 50 on Taclobanon's side.

Well, it's been 24 hours since I last picked a number for Cashoo, and now I'll have to wait 24 more to pick another for Taclobanon.

International Talk Like a Pirate (Cashoo) Day was on the 19th.
1 of my SG mates got a pic from Taclobanon. It's totally awesome. -
The last one was fun, so count me in!

Ouch. Hard question. There isn't good and bad, it's what interests you, really.
Protector and Pinnacle are mid to small population, but have very close-knit and active communities. Quality over quantity.
Justice is the unofficial Aussie server, so if you're on at strange hours in the US, there will be more people on Justice than most of the others. Also, Justice is crazy, but in a good way. Infinity is the 3rd most populated, so if you want a fair number of people, it's a good bet.
Freedom's easily the biggest, so it's got the most good players, but it also has the most stupid and rude people, and they can be pretty loud. If you ignore broadcast on Freedom, there's a really great bunch of players, you just have to dig for them a little.
Virtue's the other high population server. It's the unofficial RP server, so that can be good or bad, depending on how you feel about it. A lot of people don't RP, and nobody's going to make you. Virtue's players are very nice, and there's always something going on.
I don't have enough experience with the others to comment. I play on Virtue and Pinnacle, and love 'em both. -
Quote:I'd second the vote for the Hollows, or if you don't have a temp travel power yet, go to King's Row (you can get there via the Yellow Line tram in Atlas). When you get to King's Row, A detective contact should pop up in the nav bar. Talk to him to get a police scanner. After three scanner missions, you'll get a message to talk to the detective again, and he'll offer you a Safeguard mission, defending a bank against robbers. If you complete the Safeguard, you get a two-hour temp travel power (a flightpack if you're 10 or under, a superjump pack if you're 10 or over. At level 10, you have a 50/50 chance of getting the 5-10 safeguard or the 10-15 Safeguard. It's weird.) They help a *lot* before you have your own travel power, especially in a big hazard zone like the Hollows.Yeah, the Devs were a bit too vigorous with those messages when they added Architect Entertainment to the game
I'd try heading over to the Hollows and working on those story lines. The revamped Hollows are pretty nice from what I hear (I still need to get around to playing this...)
Also, Welcome to the City! If you're curious about something in the game, Paragonwiki has everything you want to know, and if it doesn't, come ask here, we enjoy showing off our knowledge to the newbies.Oh, and check out Faultline when you hit 15, that series of stories is one of my favorite parts of the game.

Quote:Yeah, it might start a fight, but I think this is worth emphasizing, especially because the OP is asking about MMOs in general. In a lot of other games, especially older ones, combat was designed around the idea of the "holy trinity": A tank to absorb damage and keep enemies away from teammates, a damage dealer to kill those enemies, and a healer to keep the other two in fighting shape. Even World of Warcraft uses this model to a certain extent, so a lot of people come to City of Heroes/Villains thinking that the "healer" is the best type of support class, and that they need one to accomplish anything.
"Healer": That guy that keeps you from dying by using a pound of cure after the fact.
"Defender": That guy that keeps you from dying by using an ounce of prevention before the fact.
That's not true, at least not here. In CoH/V, powers that buff teammates or weaken enemies are much, much more powerful than in most other MMOs. Even Empathy, the set a lot of people think of as the "healing" set, is based mostly on (very powerful) buffs to teammates that when used right make heals completely unneeded.
Another example would be a Force Field Defender. Force Fields doesn't have a heal, a resurrection power, or any of the other abilities people think a "healer" should have. Force Fields has defensive shields that make it harder for enemies to hit you and your team, and powers that knockdown/knockback enemies to keep them from attacking. That's it. A good forcefielder doesn't *need* a healing power, because his team doesn't get hit in the first place.
Since you're not joining us with a background in other MMOs, this may not seem like a big deal, but there are a lot of veterans of other games wandering around who still think support=heals, and on the other side, the Defender subforum will skin you alive and sacrifice you to their dark and terrible gods if you wander in and start talking about "Healers". Just remember, in CoH/V, healing isn't a bad thing, just a last resort.
