September Fanart Battle - VOTE!!

Down to 3. The elimination again chosen by an artist not making it in time. Though LD did say he would be gone for the majority of the month i hate to see him drop. That leaves us with our top 3 artists in contention for the title of FArt champion of 2009!

The challenge this month was to create a scenario that showed the moment of tragedy in either a hero or villains lifetime. Some incident that happened along the way and to try and create the whole story in one picture. With that in min, look at the 3 entries below and choose the ONE that you feel most represents that theme of tragedy the best. The winner will garner what could be the last immunity of the year leading up to the finale so lets get to it shall we?

Toxic Shia

The-Foo

Aprosaath

Some notes:
  • Toxic Shia carries immunity this month as the winner of Augusts' challenge
  • Unfortunately Lousy_Day was unable to post an entry in time and is therefore eliminated
  • The winner of this months challenge will receive immunity for next months battle provided they submit a piece for October

My boy Tigerztale had some time and worked up a sweet entry to show us of Ghost Widow and Wretch and the tragedy that ensued. Check out the inks below:

Thanks for that Tiger, it looks just awesome! I hope you find the time to finish it and share that with us! Much appreciated bro!

So as always, make sure and get the word out that anyone on the boards can vote in this contest. Also remember that you are voting for the art matching the theme and not the artists individually! Voting will be closed on September 31st - midnight PST.

Good luck guys!

Since Shia has immunity and therefore the vote would be useless, I'm voting Foo. If Shia didn't have immunity, that'd definitely be where my vote would go - that is an AWESOME piece. (The first one wasn't bad, but I am VERY glad you changed your submission.)

I am so so so glad Foo did Phipps' "tragedy". It fits perfectly. He's such a terrible, awful, monstrous man, it'd be fairly obvious something as innocuous as dropping his icecream would totally set him off.

I would have loved to see Apro's piece finished... Didn't really understand what was going on, other than a hero rescuing another hero from under a car - didn't know if that was supposed to be Mom or not (hard to make armor suits feminine) - until I read the description - the picture doesn't 100% stand on its own, which is unfortunate. At least we got a lesson: BACKUP!

Who would've thunk it that with a theme of tragedy that I would be laughing so hard at this stuff.
--------------------------------------------
The Foo:
I guess that ******* Phipps got his "just deserts" --bah dum dum' tish--
Ok bad pun of the week out of the way now on to the artz.

When I read your post of...
"I want to pinpoint the exact second that turn is made, the straw breaking the camel's back,
and commit that to an image of such unrivalled, heart-rending sorrow that it leaves you all feeling
hollowed out." ...I knew it would be good, but I was unprepared for the colossal cone fail. This piece
actually made me laugh aloud so nice work on capturing "the look" of the moment Phipps snapped inside.

The top down look works well in that I felt was looking down on him as he silently curses the
heavens. Also his pose helps to convey all the right things, from his feet being planted so close
together and stiff arms, to his arrow-straight tie and clenched fist, he looks very straight-laced
and wound up tight... like all it would take is one more teeny little thing to go wrong and there
would be hell to pay for decades to come.
What was (literally) missing for me here was the ground. Almost anything would have sufficed
but there are things that could've added even more to his suffering (and thusly the tragic/comedic
punch) like him walking up to his parked junker of a car only to find a parking ticket or a brick
thrown through the front windshield or graffiti on hood telling him to "have a nice day a-hole"
(or all three + the hellions set it on fire) or if he doesn't have a car (don't know his back story
that well) a cloud of pigeons crapped all over the seat of his bike or just a bike lock lying on the
ground where his bike should be etc etc. Even just a grimy street corner or a sewer grate for his
ice cream to splat onto would be better than nothing.
The other concern with having nothing is that it makes the perspective a bit trickier to get right...
with no ground for frame of reference the eye tends to define air space by whatever else is available
and for me I see a line going through where his belt is and another going across the front of his
shoes and the gap between those two lines as the "airspace" between where he is holding his ice
cream cone and the ground. Since a part of the "splat" falls into that space it makes the ice
cream look like its hovering about knee-height and has yet to hit ground.
What you have given us here Foo is real good (his expression is classic lol) I think you just needed
to take it a little further to make it truly epic.
I only feel mostly-hollowed.

------------------------------------------

Toxic Shia:
Very well done Shia. I am glad you took the time to submit another piece... your
first one while chuckle-worthy didn't really feel tragic to me. Also the misspelling of Zeus
(twice ) and the suspiciously phallic zipper in panel two thrown weren't helping the tragedy
factor any >o.0<... fine for a quickie joke but not up to your usual high standards.

Your second piece however gets it right and really has it all... comedy, tragedy and irony all rolled
up into one plus all the great little details that really make me enjoy looking at your stuff to find
"teh hidden funnehz." I found myself laughing then going awww then laughing some more then
noticing the irony of the situation... then cracking up over another hidden gag... GREAT STUFF!

***Spoiler Alert*** If you want to pore over his piece and look for the stuff yourself then skip the
rest of my review. I wrote it as small as possible and in grey to make it hard to read on purpose
for this reason... if you don't mind then you can left click and drag your mose over the below
text to highlight it and make it easily readable again.

From the "Sony" subwoofer (well he is made of junk after all lol) mounted on his shoulder
and the X-box controller hanging from his wrist down to the 70's style rotary telephone soldered
onto his butt... lol all he needs now are some fuzzy dice hahaha. Not to mention the hamsterwheel
"powering" his kneecap and what appears to be a yin/yang in his elbow. It's also funny to me that in
Clock King's "what I desire" thought bubble Penny's eye stalks have eyelashes (all the better for
her brain to wink at his lol) and there's a strand of her hair riveted to the outside of the braincase
while in her thought bubble is a superstud with all the "hearts" seemingly centered on his package hahaha.
Even funnier, since they are both powerful psychics and can read what the other is thinking,
they are not just thinking wistfully to themselves... they are actually "talking" to one another
heh. It's like he's saying to her "I will love you for your mind and her response is "yeah that's
really sweet clocky but I like a big *$#!$*"

The use of a photo background is understandable given how little time he had left and it actually blends in
fairly well... I'm curious though where that shot is from, the style of buildings kind of suggests a European
city and Essen House is German (eating house or restaurant) but it could be anywhere I suppose?
-----------------------------------------

Aprosaath:
I'm hesitant to say to much on this one since it's still a WIP and I would just be speculating.
That said I will comment on a few things I gather are fore the most part "done."

I like where this piece is going and I was able to get "Mom finds daughters broken body under
a car" without yet having read the caption text (did read the note though). Although in retrospect
it could, I suppose, just as easily have been "Daughter finds mom's broken body under a car" making
the scene a depiction of the "what he did to you" referenced in the note vs. the note describing events
that led up to the scene.

What you got right though was that the injured (dead?) hero under the car "looks" younger
and more likely to be Little Belle from her size to the miniskirt outfit. What would have really
made it a definite thing rather than an educated guess would be the wording of the note. Some
part of it should indicate that "what he did" (which could mean anything) to the mom didn't include
killing her with a car. Something like "I won't let him get away with all the suffering he put you through"
might work... you get the idea (or maybe you don't and I'm just rambling cuz it's 4am and I'm half awake lol).
The other thing that jumps out at me is the hand seems to be floating and not bearing the weight
of the car. It's kinda like doing fingertip push ups where you don't let your palm touch the ground...
same way here with her fingers only slightly curled it looks like she is fingertip pressing the car rather
than whole-hand lifting it. Her fingers should either curl all the way around to show they are gripping
the car or they should be completely flattened by the weight of the vehicle so the palm looks like
its making even contact with the underside. Other things would be perhaps round off moms chin a bit
and maybe a tear running down her cheek from under the visor. Just suggestions though and I hope you
complete it and share the finished piece with us.
-----------------------

Well I think the most tragic think here is Aprosaath's use of Vista (I build and repair computers... had to be said)
but since I can't vote for that my vote goes to Shia for taking the time and really pulling out a great piece even
though he could've coasted by with immunity this month.

Sidenote: Had Shia gone with his first submission I would've probably voted for Foo.

P.S. Great piece you have there Tigerz, that's some really sharp pencilwork, I'd love to see it finished...
oh and TA get well soon bro.
P.P.S. Anyone know what happened to LD???
I was really looking forward to seeing what great art would come up with for this theme.

I have to vote for Shia... A large part of the reason is that it is "all CoH" in that even a newbie such as myself can recognize easily what characters he's portraying, what the storyline behind them is, etc... It also clearly shows the moment we are looking for.

I like Foo's but couldn't that just be any guy having a really bad day? And while I like the humor of the ice cream being that final straw the piece just doesn't convery to me that he's about to go out and seel vengeance upon the world.

As for Apro's... I like this piece but I just don't think the emotional payoff was as strong as it could have been. Having to read a note tacked into the piece lessens some of the impact for me. To me the picture should speak for itself. Yours does, actually, but you don't know the mother daughter connection (and thus get the stronger emotional payoff) until you read the note.

I think you could have gotten the mother/daughter connection into the picture itself by including a family resemblance... Be it having the daughter wearing a version of the moms armor or even at least having the same color scheme.

This is a tough one.

Foo's cracked me up.

Appro's brought a tear to the eye.

And shia's made me look twice at the brain in the jar.

in terms of art though shia really knocked it outta the park . I would love to have that picture hanging up on my wall.

So shia takes my vote this round.

the biggest tragedy of all is that LD didn't make it in on time! This is a topic I think he would have done very well in.

Thanks all,

I have a few days I may be able to do some more on the picture, but I'm in the middle of moving so I can't say when it will be done.

As to my opinion of the other contestants submissions; Shia did an awesome job, and Apro's is very nicely done for a work in progress, but since Shia has immunity so I would have to choose my boy "The Foo".

I would vote for Tigerztale.
But since he's not in it, i'll vote for Shia

I will take "mostly hollowed-out" as the best compliment ever.

I'm voting Foo this time.

Shia has immunity so it would be irrelevant to vote for him. I think Aprosaath's concept is very moving but the execution at this point doesn't really adequately support the idea. Foo's layout is good and communicates the idea very clearly.

Ok, several people have said this now... Can a person not have immunity two months in a row? If they can then the vote wouldn't be pointless, would it?

I am wondering why people think voting for Shia is useless or irrelevant???
Sure he has immunity this month but the vote is to determine who has immunity for next
month right? Where did this idea come from???

And while we are on that note, with the contest wrapping up next month, is the immunity part going
to continue to the end or does it stop now that we are in the top three? If immunity continues it will
actually take a big part in the decision process as the winner may end up being whomever carried
immunity from the previous month and not who gets the most votes... what say you TA?

Personally I think it's a joint plot between Nemesis and Foo to grab extra votes.

Immunity for this month is the final immunity granted. We have our elimination for this month already so next month we still have three contestants should they choose to continue to participate. At the end of next month we will have our final 2 artists to battle it out for the title for the following month and ultimately for the year.

So yeah immunity this month is especially important. Vote like your life depends on it people!

loved all 3 and a tough call between Shia and Foo, but after looking at them Shia's got my vote.

Wait, I don't think that could have been less confusing.

Whomever wins this month, do they get immunity for October? Yes or No?

If nobody gets immunity for October, why are we voting?

If nobody is going to be voted out this month, doesn't that mean Shia's immunity is worthless?

I'm not understanding this at all. >_<

There's three of us left. Whoever gets immunity this round is guaranteed a place in the last round in November, against whomever get eliminated in October.

Which is why I am voting for me and enacting a Nemesis plot.

My vote goes to Foo. I like how he thought outside the box to come up with a tragedy.

This month (september) , there should have been four pictures up, but one person dropped out - so of the three artists up there, none are going to be voted out this month.

Next month, there'll be the same three people participating, so voting for someone THIS month means that the winner (in october) will have immunity, and the two other people who didn't get immunity will be the ones really fighting to see who continues on to the following month.

The month after that (november), there will be only two people left, so there wouldn't be any point in having immunity voted from the previous month. Since there'd be just two people left.

The month after that (december), the winner will be drawing pictures of Melanie wearing not but her scivies and being glooed to a wall with a glue bomb while tiny naked lizards in sweaters dance to a samba beat on her bombas!

So in summary; yes voting for someone this month does in fact count. Next month is the last month where someone can have immunity.

That clear things up, Sui?

Voting for Shia this month!

Would post a more explationy thing, but I'm running on little sleep and grumpiness today. :/

Definately looking forward to the final rounds coming up, though!

Well my vote goes to Shia, because although I absolutely love the humor of Foo's Pither piece, I think Shia hit it out of the ballpark this month.

Though I'm still upset that Shia's winning immunity doesn't mean jack this month. Even though someone dropped out, that doesn't really make it better that everyone else got immunity as well. That's pretty crappy in my opinion.
