It sorted itself out, but what if something happens that isn't that simple? I mean I doubt it, don't get me wrong. Nothing new is going to be added, so the chances of anything breaking in the mean time are pretty slim. I am just curious.
  2. I'd take that piece of **** being aired if it meant CoH was still up and running though. Not a very fair trade off. Still, good riddance.
  3. Then that answers the question. Yes. We'll make it until November.
  4. Its not taken down. People overloaded it logging on to say goodbye or what have you. The question is, is anyone going to be around to fix that?

  6. I didn't mean it literally. This give a grace period, a time for people to calm down, without a sudden and abrupt end. Of course considering that no one is around to take care of it while its running, we'll see if it KEEPS running, or if the hamster runs off the wheel.

What other MMO can I have an army of Mercenaries at my back? Or robots or...what have you? Or kill things with plants, and a giant venus fly trap? Or any one of a hundred other interesting and unique things that COH does?

    This sucks hardcore.
  9. No, not really. I am HOPING that I get that entire three months, but a part of me really doubts it. I expect the forum to go down a long time before then. From my understanding, its pretty much just all been scrapped. Leaving the servers up was probably just to prevent a mass storming of their headquarters by angry gamers demanding blood. This way we have time to say goodbye, and don't immediately resort to violence.

    The Last Day.

Running as many missions as I can on my merc/pain. I am going to play the crap out of this badboy in the last day I am able to.
  12. They may even go before the servers come down. No real way of knowing.
  13. Stop stop! You guys are making me cry harder! Where am I ever going to find a company like you all?

Then I am a complete *******, yes. *Laughs* My fault entirely. But it won't happen again. While I was fond of the other games, City of Heroes was something else entirely.

Strangely relaxing. I don't know if I'd pay 15 a month for it though, but it was worth my time when I was playing it.

Might go back to it though. Best Scifi MMO out there currently.

But I think I'll wait for a Mass Effect MMO.

    *sits on hands*

    Its going to be awhile.
EVE is oddly relaxing and fun to play, but not for longer periods for me. I LOVE the spreadsheetyness, of how to design and build and arm my ships, planning my training...but in game, for some reason it just can't hold my attention for months at a time like CoH.

I'm losing my only real anchor MMO, the one I always said "Well, at least I can go back to that!" for. !@#$.

    To all of you...

Thank you, Zwillinger. For being good at what you did, and making us feel like what we had to say mattered. For being one of us, and for not making us feel like we were just a cow to be milked. Thank you for listening, thank you for your patience, thank you for your time. And above all, thank you for the memories.
  17. I don't blame Guild Wars 2. I blame some executive who needed to make it look like they were doing something in the wake of a bad quarter, so they shut down an 'expendable' studio.

I will, however, have a hard time playing GW2 after this, and I will DEFINITELY not be buying anything NCsoft ever again. This is the FOURTH game I have been actively playing when they shut down, and I don't think I'll take that risk again.

Then I'll probably boot up my old WoW account for a month... and ten minutes later remember why I left in the firstplace.

Apart from that I love board games, particularly the ones from a company called Flying Frog. But I live in the frickin' boonies and there aren't enough folks around to start up a good gaming group, so... yeah. I dunno either I guess.

I mean, everything else I've ever played were just games. This place was liking finding home.

    GAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Seconding the WoW thing. I'll probably pick up a month, and play for ten minutes before remembering that I hated everything they did in Cata and even more so in Mists.

I played Champions Online and DC Universe Online for a time but kept with COH because it was the better MMO. CO and DCUO are very, very good MAMO's (Massive Action Multiplayer Online) games. They are also good super hero games. Both have grown well over their lifetime so far. The Perfect World International is unlikely to pull the plug on CO for at least a year or two. ESPECIALLY with COH going away. SOE rarely kills off a game unless the cost of the IP outweighs the income (Matrix) or they lose the IP (Star Wars Galaxies). You want an example: Vanguard. I think the fact they Own the IP means their costs are low. So as long as Warner and SOE are getting along and Warner doesn't decide to up the cost of the IP or stop footing part of the bill, SOE will keep it going. Especially due to the Console side being so unique.

COH moving out of the picture may or may not change the equation. I know, for me, it will be back to MMO of the year and moving around from one to another again. Only COH held my attention during it's whole existance. No other MMO has done that.
How is The Secret World? I am about to try the free trial.

If this was a business decision, made on the grounds of making more money per year, then they would be open to negotiation. Selling a property is more valuable than torpedoing it. But it isn't. CoX is still profitable. Not hugely, but profit is profit. And it's not like they can 'use the talent elsewhere', as they've kicked them all out. From the standpoint of business interest, this decision is stupid.

This is an executive decision. It's based on what's best for the executives in charge, and that is not at all the same thing as what's good for the business.

Here's what's happened and what will happen.

NCsoft reported lower quarterly earnings. There are reasons for this; obvious ones. Like making a big-game title that has reported all its costs but none of its profits. But an executive has to justify themselves to a board. And if you just say 'ignore the losses, we'll make money' on a game you didn't greenlight, you don't get to take any credit.

So they've looked for a game they can justify cancelling. An old game that went F2P is a perfect target. Not because it's unprofitable, but because you can easily pretend that it was the problem. They kill the game, and talk about how they've taken decisive actiopn to save profitys. And then when the profits of the huge new game come in, they can use their action to try and take credit for the profit.

This action has been made so some executive can spin a story of their decisive action saving the company lots of money and making it even more, so they can get a higher salary in the next job. It has been made solely for this purpose. It serves no other purpose. It does nothing good for the company on any level, and in fact has cut off a small but reliable revenue stream.

And that is why they will not sell the IP.

As soon as they sell the IP, they will have to concede that it is still valuable. As soon as they sell the IP in a movement initiated by the players, they seem reactionary and foolish for having not done that themselves. If they do not torpedo the IP, it will be tantamount to admitting that their actions were those of sociopathic greed.

Executive business is the most egotistical level of industry in the world, by orders of magnitude, and would rather literally destroy itself than concede being wrong. And that is exactly what they will do here.
I realize this, of course. That there was no sense in shutting down a still profitable studio. But that doesn't mean that I, and other people, can't hope against hope.

This is one thing I hate about Online games. Offline games, if something happens to my disc or to a computer that was holding data, I can buy a new one, redownload the game. But when an online game goes down, thats it. I never get to play it again.

So yes. The chances are low. But that doesn't mean I won't support any effort that tries to make it happen.
  21. Y'know what? I changed my mind. Delgran and his mercs will go find the biggest target they can, and go down fighting. When the servers go down every rifle in the squad will be going off in unison. I WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THAT DARK NIGHT!
  22. The announcement has me more...tired then angry. Its just a massive shock. I mean obviously it was going to end eventually, I just didn't think it'd be NOW. Gah. I guess thinking about it DOES make me angry, I don't feel like it should have ended yet.
