I'm of the belief that the current restrictions and penalties would make more people choose to be on the side lines

    [/ QUOTE ]

    That's me.
In addition to the costs, rent, esoteric badge requirements and general p.i.t.a. nature of bases, the ham handed attempt to reduce the amount of influence/infamy in the game by forcing players to choose one or the other has pretty made me walk away from bases in entirety.

My alts, until they are level 25, will contribute their fair share to the prestige pool but I'm letting someone else in my SG (also a small one) deal with it.

It's strange - I've been kicking around a theory of tedium-conservation lately. It seems like every time the Devs remove some pointless bit of tedium in the game they have to go and add something else in to take it's place.
  2. Not an NPC quote, but a clue from a mission.

"This decryption software can handle anything short of Ritki or Nemesis encryption".

I don't know why, but I like that line because it lets me know that someone is -really- paying attention to the storyline.

We confirmed this is happening. No ETA yet on a fix.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Nuts - and here I thought it was on purpose. At least, the one hunting has always been an Arachanos minion and he started following me a few missions after I've taken down some Arachnos mooks in the street.

Come on people, all we know is Lord Recluse said Prestige would be based on doing "stuff" in SG mode. No numbers, and nothing else.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well... I distinctly remember my empath getting .33 prestige points on test (pre-I4) for an Absorb Pain. I was (probably) in SG mode but I know that I wasn't teamed with any of my SGmates at the time.

But. That was quite some time ago.

There is no 'I' in team! Have a nice day!

    [/ QUOTE ]

    There is no "u" either....

    [/ QUOTE ]

But there is an I in pie, like meat pie and meat is an anagram for team....
  6. You know... I've been thinking about this for the past couple of days. I think I can understand the Devs logic behind this.

    My theory.

They can't have bases paid for with influence because of a the phenomenal amount of influence out there. Either rent becomes meaningless and everyone can then afford luxury condos or the rent is so high that it's unattainable to casual players and people have to start seriously farming to keep their influence levels up.

To avoid the same problem with their newer currency, prestige, they need to limit the amount they give out. But players are assuming (rightfully so) that their months of playtime should entitle them to being able to afford a base as soon as they are available.

So this half measure. We'll start everyone with prestige... but only at a tiny fraction of their full past actions should warrant. It's a compromise between the two previous options.

That's my theory. It's at least a theory that I prefer to believe over the idea that this is some random whacked out attempt to get people to use a nearly completely ignored function of the game - SG mode.

It is also, however, a compromise that I disagree with. I would rather see prestige become dirt common so as to avoid professional prestige farming teams wandering around in the game.

I mean... I like the idea of prestige. The idea that certain ennobling actions gain you a bonus. From what I remember during that brief time on test prior to I4 releasing, my empath gained .33 prestige points for using Absorb Pain on a badly hurt teammate. I remember some other idle chatter about people getting prestige points for defeating monsters.

And if prestige is to have any game meaning, it needs to translate into a tangible benefit. Supergroup HQs sounds like both an appropriate and cool use for prestige.

I just don't like this punative method for implementing it.
  7. Actually.... I can already see the arguments within supergroups over this.

Hero A) Dood - u need to farm prestige with us.
    Hero B) I'd rather not. It's dull.
    Hero A) U Sux.
    <hero b has been kicked from supergroup>

On a counter-point, if this prestige system has anything to do with something that slipped into test a while ago, Empaths are gonna become REAL popular. I remember casting Absorb Pain on someone and gaining .33 prestige point (or something like that).

I'll just stand around the tram (in SG colors) absorbing pain and healing aura for a while. If it requires a partner I'll just have a SGmate teleport up, drop down, absorb pain, teleport up, rinse repeat... That's just one example, I'm certain that there's gonna be dozens of exploits out there, all requiring a sequence of actions to be repeated over and over again.

Weeeee what fun. But whoever said that earning your rent money was supposed to be fun. That's why they're called "jobs" not "hobbies".

Just wanted to be the first to say it.

I think a much simpler and more straightforward solution is to put the defense bonus at it's "suppressed" value, and leave it there. Much easier for everyone involved, and much less confusing to explain.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Now that I can see. (no pun intended). Villians who are nearby now know where you are, reducing your defense bonus against them, but you are still cloaked, ninja'd, hiding in shadows, fog banked, clouding minds, etc. so that villians farther away still don't see you.

It's starting to feel like the person who came up with the "suppression" idea has invested personal ego into it and is now selling it to the rest of the team as the "panacea for all ills" including PvP balance.
  10. [ QUOTE ]
    Agreed.

We should try NEVER to change a power because of PvP alone (BTW, this is what I've always promised). The changes now aren't solely because of PvP - there's signifcant PvE issues, too.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I am interested in knowing what aspect of SS and SJ is so overwhelming off-kilter in PvE that they need to be so curtailed?
  11. [ QUOTE ]
PVP missions, silly :P lots of new mission tech involved in that.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Except that, from what I remember, PVP is being limited to the Arena.

As a father and an owner of a boat, I can safely say that you are not bored with missions.

Oh.. my.. god.. What is next? CoH ring tones? A breackfast ceral? Statesman underwear?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Man, I'd kill...er, I mean arrest...for the Williams Square (FF) music as a ring tone.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And I don't think that it'd be difficult to get Cafe Press to do up some underwear.
  15. [ QUOTE ]

The only reason they ever promised that was because they had no idea the game would actually be *successful.* L5R came out at a time when CCGs were burning out as fast as they came out. When AEG realized they were on to something the promise to end the game was very quickly (and rightly) forgotten.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh - I understand. In fact I remember that even as early as Jan '97, ISOMEDIA/AEG was fielding calls from retailers that essentially said that they couldn't sell an unsupported soon-to-die game. So they weren't going to be buying any of the expansions that came out.
And a little spin control later and it was all about how it was the story arc that was ending - not the game.

For me - the problem is that one of the reasons I got into the game was BECAUSE of the advertising the game would end. Combined with the fact that in Imperial Edition, the power was evenly distributed between the commons, uncommons and rares, I had thought I found a game that avoided the continuous cycle of spending money just to stay currently competetive.

But we are in agreement in that it was an obvious decision from a business standpoint. At the time though, this call along with the decision to create artifical value by no longer printing the Ancestral Swords, left me rather irate at the time.

    C'est L'vie. It's all good now.
  16. [ QUOTE ]

For the L5R fans following this thread, I wouldn't sweat the ramp up of power cards too much. Diamond is comming to a close, and Lotus is becomming the main focus. Things have always gotten crazy at the end of an edition's life cycle. The circle of life continues. . . .

    [/ QUOTE ]

Feh. Game shoulda ended, as advertised, at Gencon '97.
  17. [ QUOTE ]

Secondly, I might be GMing games of it at the big cons (Gen Con, Origins, etc.) - so keep your eyes peeled.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ah man....and I'm still paying down the cards from my last Gen Con trip.
    Yeah - the Milwaukee one.

Well. There's just enough room for another trip now. . . if I split the room. . . with 14 other guys. . . and eat ramen for the weekend.
  18. [ QUOTE ]

I'm hoping we'll see a system akin to TORG where we have mechanics for grunts and then for the "real" bad guys. While that wouldn't be exactly like the MMORPG version, I think it is a reasonable compromise.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    CoH : Feng Shui

uh. . . holy smokes. . . that would WORK!!
  19. Nah - he's old school L5R.

    Probably played Naga-corn.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
My question here is this: Why would anyone play this CCG over playing the Versus System CCG that Upper Deck Entertainment produces? They get to do Marvel and DC characters and you get money for winning their regional type tournaments on up.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's entirely possible that AEG just offered far better terms to CoH for their license and heck, if you've ever been in the vicinity of a John Zinser sales pitch - you'll know that the boy . is . GOOD.

    -----------------

Without knowing the terms of the deal, and Just on a gut feeling - I think Jack Emmert made the right call. Upper Deck probably and WotC certainly would not have been able to treat the license with the attention that it's due. AEG has a proven track record in Doomtown handling someone else's setting, converting it to viable CCG mechanics, and treating that license with respect and enthusiasm.

While I won't make any secret about my current (coughrabidcough) dislike for CCGs in general, I just gotta respect AEG's ability to deliver in a business capacity.
  21. Just wait until you find out that it'll cost $20 apiece to get yer ultra-rare Fulcrum Shift (or Eagle's Claw or Phantasm or . . )power . Don't forget - you'll need 4 in a deck to maximize your chances of winning. If not 4, then 3. . . or 5. . . or some other marketing based strategy of $$$ = winning to convince people that they need to buy boosters by the caseload. . .

Don't mind me. . . I've just burned out on the pay-to-win market a long time ago.

At least it's AEG. When they put their mind to it, they can put out a good game and with their loss of the Stargage license, they'll be hungry for a big hit.

Let's hope they just don't end up recycling their Warlord engine.
