  1. Nothing wrong with it per se. I still like it. But with Plant's recharge at just 60 seconds, it makes me wonder if Mass Confusion really needs to be set at 240 seconds.
  2. I didn't think that would work. But I think in light of the game today it would be a reasonable move. The 240 second recharge on this power is really making me look at Illusion and Plant more and more and considering a reroll--not that I'm likely to just yet.

    Ill/Rad critique

There is one ultra dirty way I think World of Confusion might be used. I've never tried this so I'm not sure it would actually work.

WoC has a damage aura that does not notify enemies. I've never actually tried it, but if that aura tags you as having "hit" enemies its possible that you could wade into groups with it on, hit them with the damage, use your long duration non-notify Deceive power to confuse them into killing each other, and still get credit for the kill. Whether this is ever actually useful I don't know. It's one of those intriguing things that (if you do get credit for having "hit" enemies) I *know* has to be exploitable, even if I'm not clever enough to think of where and how. I agree that it's probably not worth taking but I also wonder what a determined player could pull off with that power.
  4. 1) I always team on PUGs. I don't solo, and don't maintain much of a friend list. Sometimes other people friend me and invite me back to teams, but I don't actively seek them.

    2) Never. I always team with PUGs.

    3) Most team members (on Virtue) are reasonably competent. They don't always do what I want, but for the most part they get the job done and seem to have fun as long as the action keeps moving. I do sometimes have problems with team leaders though, in particular, leaving the team standing around for long periods of time with no clear goal. (Team hint: if you are the team leader, keep your group constantly posted on what you are up to.)

    4) Almost never. Although if the team needs something done they might need to be told. Example: the team is dying left and right and the Force Field character is not putting up shields.

    5) Very rarely. I never look back at my friends list anyway, so the people I've added I've lost track within a few days. If I happen to remember a specific character I may say hi to them, but only after I've joined the team. I don't strike up conversations with people in-game.

    6) I almost never end up with complete jerks. It has happened--one guy tried to grief-tp me off a cliff (apparently unaware I had hover) and another, by now infamous, jerk kicked me from a team mid-mission because I declined to join his super group (his reply: "Disappointing." /kick). On occasions when I've led a team, I've had to kick a team mate only once in two years.

    g-a-y supergroup

I don't think this is an argument any of us can win over an Internet forum. For the record though, I think calling someone "straight acting" is at least as much of a backhand compliment as telling them they are "articulate for a minority." Even if you don't think it's an outright insult it definitely has a value judgment attached to it, which a lot of folks will see as unflattering. Beyond that there are some serious cultural and political nuances that go alongside this issue that run much deeper than we can hope to discuss here.

Something of a shrinking violet as there are very few people she's comfortable around, and even fewer that will get her to relax entirely. Nonetheless she's a lot of fun to play, although it does get frustrating when people twig she's T/s and immediatly associate it with futanari characters. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

    Currently redoing her VV page.

Her bio is very understated and extremely well written. Great job. A lot of people would have gone for shock value on this but I think this is an excellent portrayal of a character.
  8. I used the TA soloing Lord Recluse as an example out of hyperbole. That obviously fell flat. Apparently it also insulted someone. If it means anything I'm sorry, because getting into personal conflicts on the message boards--let alone two in one week over the same topic--isn't something I really want to be involved in.

From the look of it, Frosticus is someone who enjoys soloing GMs and AVs. He obviously enjoys that very much. It may be worth it to him.

To me, AVs and GMs are boring. I don't care one way or another whether someone can solo them. I don't think this reflects in any way on my personal character. Did you know that I also hate watching football? I couldn't care less who wins the game. I feel exactly the same way about boss fights in City of Heroes. Since the question was "is soloing AVs/GMs worth it?" the answer, for me, is "No."

Anyway I don't think anyone really wants to read about my personal life or my expectations of it. This is a game, it's fun, and we're spending energy ripping on each other. So I tell you what, I'm going to go back to doing what I pay my monthly fee for, and I'll see you in the place we can both agree is pretty awesome--City of Heroes itself.

Speaking of hyperbole. IMO if my marriage and career are at risk over my opinion of an online superhero video game I've got problems soloing a GM won't solve.
  10. I tried it out in Mass Hypnosis and it was... all right. It fires pretty regularly and sometimes two or three times in one group, if it is large enough. I can see why a character with a self heal wouldn't want this. I'm torn on this character though. Getting nickled and dimed to death is an occasional annoyance. It's certainly not Aid Other although that's not what I was expecting. I have to weight his against other changes to the build to make a decision. It would probably be better to swap the heal proc out for a damage proc in a different power, but it's hard to say just yet.

    Thanks for the help guys.

The entire premise of the game leads people to beating bigger and badder things, or beating multiple things faster and faster.

    Hyperbole much.

What did you expect? "You solo'd a GM? Can I like... be your boyfriend?"

I enjoy the game because it is fun but being "impressed" by what other players do to GMs with a build devoted to soloing GMs doesn't really enter the radar.

But I'm sometimes impressed by a cool costume.

[EDIT: A few changes to structure to avoid sounding curt. Not sure I succeeded but it's better than the two word reply I started with. Still a little weirded out that I was asked "why I even play the game."]
  12. If you've done AVs on teams you may have noticed that sometimes a very good team really struggles with an AV and sometimes a crap team mops the floor with the same guy. This is pretty much what you can expect from soloing AVs. Whether you consider it an accomplishment is up to you. For me, news of another Ill/Rad soloing a Giant Monster more makes me think "Really? They haven't fixed that?" than "That's incredible!" On the other hand if you manage to solo Lord Recluse with a Trick Arrow Defender it might be something worth feeling good about.

Not sure I agree, but I have no direct experience with it.

If the proc fired once every 12 seconds, I'd be getting the equivalent of a 100% Regen boost (Players regen 5% of their total HP every 12 seconds). I don't fire the power that often, but once every 24 seconds is pretty reasonable. That's equal to a 50% Regen boost. Of course there will be power uses where it doesn't proc at all.

Someone also said that they thought the proc could only fire once per power use. I'm not sure this is correct. I'm hoping someone with experience with the proc can answer that--otherwise I may be able to try it out on the test server. There are definitely procs that fire multiple times per each enemy. The core example is the sister proc to the Chance of Self Heal, the Theft of Essence: Chance for +Endurance, which definitely fires per enemy hit, not one time per power use.
  14. Secondary is Cold Dom. I actually have Mass Hyp slotted with 5 of the purples, which leaves one open slot. The sixth purple is Sleep Duration which I'm in the red on.

I did find this thread that reached a different conclusion than what we've heard so far: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=194531 . Not sure if the proc has changed but Mind Control's sleep is pretty comparable to Siren's Song overall in terms of recharge time once well slotted.

  16. Hey guys, quick question about this proc.

I see that it's got a 10% chance for a 5% heal. At level 50 that's about 50 HP. Normally that would be pretty bad.

On my Mind Controller though, I have an aggroless AoE sleep that recharges in about 12 seconds that can hit up to 16 enemies that I use pretty regularly to catch enemies at the edges of my controls. On average the proc would go off once or twice per group. I also have a single target sleep power I spam as part of my regular attack chain. The proc would go off once in ten casts without me having to stop to heal. With all those chances to proc going off, do you think this IO might be worth trying? They're very cheap (about 10,000 influence) but two whole slots can be a lot. Thoughts on this?
  17. Here are some assorted answers.

    1) I will let someone with more experience answer this... I don't actually have a Fire/Kin though I know a little about how they work.

    2) Most Fire/Kins pick the Earth epic because it's armor provides baseline Slash/Lethal defense, the heal caps your available HP on a character heavily reliant on a heal, and the Earth attacks add some safety to the build versus Fire which is just a bit more damage. Fire makes more sense on some other Controllers because, for them, wading into melee to use Earth powers makes less sense or they lack heavy damage or a good endurance recovery power.

    3) Most farm builds shoot for 45% slash/lethal defense. This is what is called the "soft cap." Acquiring more defense beyond this point does not help the character unless you get hit with a defense debuff. On a farm, that should never happen.
  18. When creating characters like this I sometimes branch off with a backstory to find something to rhyme with. So, ideas.

    Smitegiest
Fedora Borealis (actually the name of a former character but you can steal it)
The Blast Supper (name I gave to an ex before we broke up, PLEASE steal it)
    Blast of the Mohicans
Babababloom (Plant/Energy Dominator? Not fit for your character but someone might like)
    Farce of Nature
    MC Squared (surely taken?)
Rebound Guy (i.e. as a reference to dating)
    Violet Reaction
    Kilowasp
    Debt-o-Nation (also Debt o'Nation)
    Knightroglycrine
Boogedy Blue (maybe an obscure reference to people under 25, but here's a hint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQfz5_b12O8 )
  19. I didn't read much of the thread. Just wanted to say this:

Remove the prompt. Make all buffs dismissible by right clicking their icon and selecting "Dismiss." Only powers that grant all benefits can be dismissed. You cannot dismiss, for example, Rage crash.

How doable is it? I don't know. But it's the industry standard more or less.

Ok that made me LOL. I didn't think of it as an insult.

I'm still not going to go into detail about the specific situation where I most recently got killed, because that was not the intent of this thread. This is not the first time I've gotten into an Ouro arc only to run into an elite boss I couldn't/didn't want to handle. The reason I'm not going to go into detail here is that the minute I do this thread is going to turn into a "ohhh well just suck that mission is so easy etc etc" bashing session. It already veered pretty heavily in that direction based on the one or two sentences of information I've provided.

When I stated that elite bosses are "designed to be impossible" for some characters I thought this was literally true. It has always been my assumption such enemies were actually designed with the intent of requiring a team, and the fact that we can solo them anyway was more a game balance issue than the result of deliberate design strategy. From the sound of things that's not actually the case, although that doesn't increase my desire to deal with them on the type of characters I tend to play. Acquiring powers normally reserved for the hardest task forces in the game to get through a surprise encounters in a mission arc is not something I'm interested in doing. In any case, from I can gather from reading about it it appears a Shivan wouldn't have been an option anyway, because it requires a mission and when on Ouro arcs you can't take them. I would have had to known ahead of time and brought the power along.

That said, like you, I'm not interested in continuing to argue. I can see how we misunderstood each other. Hand accepted.
  21. As a rule of thumb I lean away from armor sets on an AV. They are already bags of HP. Giving them even more protection just makes the battle stretch that much longer and don't really add much interest.

The Control sets are also a mostly-avoid. Ice Control and Earth Control (and Cold Domination) have massive debuffs that will make the fight very frustrating. Mind Control bypasses positional defense completely, and will make your Force Fielder worthless. Force Field itself on an AV is just evil.

Other powers that can be problematic:
    - Regeneration Aura, for reasons that should be apparent
    - Any Confusion power
    - Repel/Repulsion Field and any other knockback toggle, which can actually make the fight impossible for some characters
    - Choking Cloud
    - Personal Force Field/Hibernate/Phase Shift, which just make the fight annoying instead of challenging
    - Shield Charge and other hard hitting ranged AoEs in general (choose cones over radial AoEs if you must include them so that teams can at least hope to keep the AV attacking the tank)
    - Phalanx Fighting and anything else that grants bonuses based on the number of enemies surrounding the AV, which simply penalizes melee and pet heavy teams
    - Fast recharging heal powers
    - Dimension Shift/Black Hole (if these powers are even available)

If you want some of these kinds of effects but dont want to make them OP'ed, a suitable alternative is to have the AV summon waves of weaker enemies to help him. That way the powers are part of the fight but the enemies can be disabled/defeated.

I'd love this, but I don't know if they'd go for it due to Ouro sometimes giving out merit awards. Though what had occurred to me in the past is that it would be great if we never "outgrew" contacts, and if we accepted a mission from them but were "too high" for it, we'd be exemped to the proper level range using the same mechanics the AE does but only when playing that mission. (Right now we are exemped to the level of the person who owns the mission, not the mission itself--this would exemp everyone to the level of the mish and then increase the enemy difficulty from that base). That would be a dream solution, really.
  23. I agree with the comments about Thermal being very busy. I loved it with Ice Control because Ice Arctic Air kept things pretty safe while I took my eyes away from the screen to buff or heal. With Earth on large teams it could sometimes get a bit frantic.

Thermal is also possibly the only secondary set where I had to consciously remind myself that I'm a Controller, not a Defender, and cut back on some slotting/power prioritization in order to stay good at my main.

As an aside Thermal should incidentally be *awesome* on a Defender. Just say yes to about +51% damage in Forge and -62.5% damage in Heat Exhaustion.

EDIT: I just realized that Thaw helps resist Run Speed and -Recharge debuffs by 80% each! Where have I been the past two years? That makes it the best of the mezz-protect powers I think, besides maybe 02 Burst.

That being said, (dare I say?) most people are casual players who just play for the fun and don't waste their time in useless things such as number crunching, game mechanics and researching resources, so an EB/AV warning label in Ouro arcs only seems fair.

I think this sums it up pretty well actually. Even though I do have a decent-ish understanding of game mechanics I haven't spent a lot of timing soloing. My first toon was an Earth/Thermal, second was Ice/Therm, and my main (this character) is a Mind/Cold. I have always played this game for the PUGing, have never had a character who could hold his or her own in the damage department, and for the most part have simply run Task Forces and radio teams. When I do solo, mostly due to team inavailability, it's radio missions because their difficulty level is easy to predict.

Now we did just get one major improvement to the game for players like me and that is the ability to abandon missions. I can't tell you what a huge relief that is. That's because with character who struggle to deal enough damage to take out a regular boss, elite bosses have long been my bane. I was too hasty in calling them "impossible." What they really are is just "incredibly irritating" for me. The difficulty gap between a regular boss and an elite one is extreme. Getting to the end of a mission and finding out the guy I'm supposed to kill is an elite boss was always a huge let down. And then I was stuck with the mission in my que. So for two years I pretty much didn't do any solo content at all, except for the aforementioned radio missions.

I really don't think I'm asking for anything too extreme here. I don't care that I suck at fighting elite bosses and despite what some people have tried to claim have never said I want to be able to solo them. This is not a competition for me. I just want to a tool to help me avoid them altogether. They are the opposite of fun. As is gathering up a massive pool of temporary resources to deal with something the character is natively unequiped to handle.
  25. (Sorry for the weird style of posting. I missed this comment on the first pass but I felt I had to respond to it.)
