Quote:FINALLY. Congrats. As you've now seen, Hamidon is indeed out there, lurking in the forests. Spotting the beast should be a reminder to all citizens about the constant, immediate, and overwhelming threat faced by Praetoria, and a firm reminder not to venture past the sonic pylons.
This small taste of the Praetorian Hamidon has been in the game since GR launched, and internally, we've all been wondering and guessing how long it might be before one of you guys caught a glimpse or better yet, a photo. And now you have--bravo!
Depictions of Hamidon that you see scattered around Praetoria are merely a charicature of the real thing: artists' renderings of something seen only from a distance and poorly understood. Hamidon has changed since players last confronted the creature in Primal Earth, but the story here is just beginning to unfold... -

That's incredibly bad news. Over the last two seasons, this show went from decent to must-watch for me. Hope they change their minds over the coming months.

Quote:We use the .psd format for a few reasons:It would be nice if for once these contests didn't require .PSD format.
I appreciate it's the go-to format but I'm sure there are plenty of people like me who are pretty artistic but don't have time to buy/learn that.
Another competition (like the loading screens one which I was so excited about at first) which I shall be missing.
--layers allow us to easily modify your submissions (i.e., makes it easier for us to get your work into the game)
--format/software is relatively intuitive and easy to pick up
--format is widely used in the art world (and is our 2D software package of choice in studio as well)
Hope that helps explain the reasoning. Remember, you can get a free trial of Photoshop from Adobe's website if you'd like to try it out. -

Quote:Hey, folks. Here's the actual quote:War Witch said she was a "solid no" on adding weather systems to the game because it "adds nothing" to game play. I really, vehemently disagree with that statement.
"Ive never been a huge fan of weather for the sake of weather and Ive said not on my watch in the past, but if there is a compelling gameplay reason to do it, not just because its cool, Id reconsider. So far, no ones come up with one, but Im open to ideas."
Note that this is a far cry from "solid no." As with all things, we'll look at the priorities of the project at hand and introduce new tricks when they make sense. Cheers. -
Nice! These are full of WIN.

Fans submitted thousands of pics for us to go through, so it's going to take some time. We'll make a big announcement when it's ready.

Confirmed: SLI will be supported as of the I19 release. Enjoy!

Quote:Anything is possible, but at that point, it's a new piece and not a conversion.David,
How about making parts that are "inspired by" some of the more requested signature pieces, such as Maelstrom's "heart". Something different enough that the signature character stays unique, but allows for something of a similar concept/look for the player.
For example, taking the "jewel" chest detail, and adding the bio-lum glow tech, allows for Iron-man-esque chest power-sources, but is still distinctly different from Maelstrom's "heart". Similar approaches could be used for some faction pieces. -
Quote:I think we're on the same page. From this thread, I'd like to generate a compact list of, say, 10-15 individual pieces (and maybe a full theme or two) for possible player use, just to get a conversation started.David,
I totally understand your concerns about player characters looking too similar to NPCs, and the potential griefing situations it can cause. One way around this is to not give players entire NPC costume sets. Instead, just a few notable pieces. Going back to the Skulls as an example: If players were given their masks and emblem jackets, they could come close to recreating the NPC model, but they couldn't perfect the look due to the NPC-only "tucked in pants and boots" combo that The Skulls, Hellions, Crey security guards, and several other NPCs wear. I realize that this would still allow for some griefing to occur, but caution must sometimes be thrown to the wind. After all, those people who would use availability of NPC parts to grief others would likely grief other players through other means if those NPC parts weren't available.
Also, the "griefing other players by looking too much like NPCs" argument kinda loses steam when Paragon Studios gives away costume powers at every meet and greet they do.
Griefing will happen regardless, but obviously it should be kept to a minimum. -
Quote:Seriously, there's no bigger proponent of going back and fixing stuff than me (ask anyone in the office)Can I ask, why is it that you guys seem to really hate going back and re-doing stuff? Whats with the whole insistence on 'new shinies' all the time, wether its zones, content or NPCs? Do the higher ups and Marketting Empire enemy group have a role in it all?
, but if ALL we did was revamp existing content, it wouldn't contribute much to the game. Even with a fresh coat of paint, you'd still be playing the same basic story in the same kind of environment, right?
So by far, the better return on investment is to focus on giving you guys NEW stories to experience, new zones to explore, and new enemies to fight. For my money, that's 1000x more fun. But obviously, revamps and revisits (like Faultline, Ultramode, new tails, alternate animation options, Girlfriend From Hell, hospital gurneys in hazard zones, etc.) will continue to happen alongside the new stuff. -

Quote:With all the time in the world, that would be awesome, but redo-ing all the costume work for whole villain groups isn't feasible. That said, I imagine we would add some shader improvements to anything we do touch. One suggestion I would have is to kill two birds with one stone.
Update old villain groups with parts that can translate to the character creator better.
The Rikti look amazing still after they got revamped, and if you are looking to make this game look fresh and vibrant, while still offering the players costume parts of them, I suggest that route.
To this end, I would recommend the Freakshow, Vahzilok, Hellions and Carnival of Shadows. -
Couple of considerations to keep in mind as you make your suggestions: we'd probably choose not to make a player version of an NPC costume part if it a) doesn't fit on the existing character rigs/work well with other parts, or if it's b) very, very signature and intimately tied to the group or character's look (like Maelstrom's 'heart' for example, which really should remain unique), or c), if it creates an opportunity for confusion and/or griefing (i.e. if by using the costume part, you could look EXACTLY like an enemy and therefore confuse other players).
Skull and Carnival masks are in the gray area for me, but most other parts are fair game for discussion. -
What's up, everybody? As your friendly neighborhood CITY OF HEROES Art Lead, I wanted to create a dedicated space where you, the player, can post your questions and comments about anything in the game that's art related. It's a direct line of communication between you and the COH Art Team, and what I'd really like to get out of it is to learn what the playerbase wants to see in upcoming releases.
********************************
As most of you know, our general policy these days is to take new NPC groups and to make most of their costume parts available to players (See: AM Clockwork, PPD Police, and Resistance). Seems like this has inspired some of you to request that older NPC groups get a similar treatment.
So in this thread, let's talk specifically about the possibility of reaching back into the COH archives and getting you those options. IF we decided to do that, what would be your top choices? Also, if given the choice, would you consider this a priority over, say, brand new costume sets, 'lost' costume pieces, and other alternatives? Feel free to weigh in.
*********************************
A couple of quick ground rules to get us started:
1. Gotta keep it real: Ongoing development is of course my top priority, so my ability to respond to posts and PMs will be limited. If you don't get a direct reply, don't worry--rest assured that I'm reading everything that appears on this thread.
2. Patience, young Jedi: Posting on this thread won't necessarily expedite that special part you've wanted forever, but it'll at least keep it on the radar. We're always striving to give you guys what you want, but that comes in two flavors: variations on existing stuff, and brand-new stuff that expands the game into exciting new territory. Though we try to honor older requests (see: animated tails), it has to happen as a part of overall development.
3. This is why we can't have nice things: If something's logistically prohibitive, technically unfeasible, or aesthetically miss-matched with the game, I'll always try to level with you. Certain things just aren't on the agenda, and why dwell on those when we could be talking about all the awesome stuff that you get instead?!
4. Rein it in there, cowboy: Let's try to keep the dialogue measured and constructive. It's helpful to know what you like and don't like, but play it cool, y'know?
So yeah, what's on your mind? -

Quote:That's correct. While I'm stoked that everyone's excited about the IDF pieces, it looks like I've been misquoted a little bit.I don't think they said they would release one NPC group per issue. They said we would get the pieces of every NPC group they introduce from now on.
To clarify, IDF costume parts will be available for players at some point, but not in I19. The announcement at NYCC was simply that the IDF enemy group will now be sporting a shiny new look in the Maria Jenkins and Tina McIntyre storyarcs.
More IDF news to come in future issues, though. Count on it. -
Quote:To reiterate what was said in the panel: we've redoubled efforts to take all newly-developed npc groups and make the vast majority of those options available for players. It's a pretty common request, so we're spending the time to make it happen. Will an IDF-themed set be available for players at some point? That's the hope, yes. But stay tuned--when and how is not something we've announced yet.I hope a red name comes in here and clarifies if we're getting that set or not. Seems like everyone is saying we are but I never heard the panel say that.
The actual announcement at hand is that you'll be able to fight these guys for the first time as part of I19 (updating the Maria Jenkins and Tina Mcintyre storyarcs). -
Quote:Just for the record, what we've said publically is that the team has refocused and redoubled efforts on taking npc groups and creating commensurate player costume parts whenever technically possible (See: Resistance, Clockwork, and PPD). You'll see more of this in the future as well.I hope to see the old NPC costumes David spoke of, that Kheldian sash is much needed on many of my characters!
Converting older parts is certainly POSSIBLE, but it's not something we've commited to. -
Quote:There's a grain of truth to that. The thing with that animation is that it's really quite signature and works better with some Origins than others. Adding a new flavor has been a popular request, and that's why it's in the mix now. Hope you enjoy it.It needed an alternative animation so badly that it was put in its own special catagory
