    This is true.

For the time being, let's just assume that D&D character examples can only rely on the powers/abilities given to them by their combination of classes/prestige classes.
  2. School started again, so I had a lot of time to daydream today.

I assume listing the edition to be used would be rather important, so I decided to go with 3.0/3.5

D&D characters seem to have a lot in common with super heroes, especially when it comes to the beings they fight. Mad gods, ancient abominations, genocidal madmen, and more. Some characters can mimic the abilites of Green Lanterns, (energy constructs, force fields), some are combat machines, some can sling magic and psionics as easily as anyone in Marvel or DC does, barbarians are mini-Hulks, Monks can modify their blows to mimic cold iron and magic, rangers could rival Green Arrow and Hawkeye.......the list goes on.

I did a search on google for the question I listed as the title, but nothing came up. Maybe because super heroes are built using different rules. (The point system) It can be quite fun (and a bit time consuming) to create Marvel and DC superheroes with 3.5 rules, however.

Like I said, I came up with this in a daydream. But I really do wonder. When compared to DC or Marvel super heroes, how would D&D characters rank? Lower? Equal footing? Higher? (For those of us who have the Epic Level Handbook, we know that the right selction of Epic Feats lets characters rival the powers of deities. )

This isn't a question about powergamed builds, because I'd probably never use any of them in a real game. It will be quite interesting to hear about the selection of character classes, prestige classes, skills, powers, and feats that bring a D&D character to super hero levels, (though some probably are already.......a 20th level Monk who doesn't multiclass would probably make a solid B ranked superhero)

EDIT: I wasn't sure if I should have included the various magic items that characters can wield. So I just decided to go on the abilities that characters gain upon achieving higher levels)
  3. Another vote for Dark Astoria. I'd actually like to see what it once looked like before all of the fog.
  4. To give another defense example: While more neutral than villainous, attempting to access the M'Kraan Crystal takes Defense to an infinite level. If you want to get to the Crystal, you have to defeat an extremely powerful guardian. No biggie, right? Assuming you are either powerful enough or lucky enough to defeat the guardian, guess what? Another guardian appears, who is 1,000 times more powerful than the previous one was.

I think the X-Men were actually able to defeat the first guardian, an android named Jahf. When they did, the massive robot Modt took it's place, and so far, no one in the Marvel Universe has been able to defeat Modt.

......and even if they did, the cycle continues. A guardian 1,000 times more powerful than Modt would appear. (And the line of guardians is stated to be infinite. Even Goku would quickly find his limit if he were to run that gauntlet.)

What an overkill of a defense system.

Brian Bendis has a book, Powers, on a hero who is depowered, and continues to fight crime. Hero becomes a cop on the superhero related crime department. It's a fun and vulgar read.

It looks like most of the depowered mutants will be receiving powers again.....as vampires.

Does new content really only have to be available for new Issues only? It would be rather nice to see, like say, every two or three weeks, that we get a few new story arcs, missions, or TFs, just because the devs happened to be able to churn some out at that time.

Then again, I'm just wondering. I have no idea how long it takes for devs to create a mission. There is AE, but due to the farm craze, and the sheer amount of farms and badly written arcs that remain, most people refuse to even go near AE. I've had several other players ingame and on the forums tell me that they refuse to play any content not created by a dev. Which is too bad, since some of the arcs I've played in AE have been written and used in unique ways that the devs probably never thought of (or had the chance of) doing in the past.

Didn't something similar happen to Cyclops as well, when he just became a badass normal?

EDIT: Looked at the list of Badass Normals, and saw Storm's entry. That was news to me.

I'm asking if he would continue to fight crime, and what he would use to do that, without his powers.

Using his webshooters without his powers seems doable, as long as he doesn't use them on anyone with super-strength. (Doesn't stop Batman from using his grapple against super-strong opponents however.....then again, Batman has trained himself to be as strong as humanly possible, while I don't even know if Spider-Man even exercised before he gained his powers.)
  9. Back in a thread that I created about a month ago, I questioned why most super -heroes don't undertake Martial Arts to at least refine their technique. Some good answers were given. I wanted to ask this question in that thread, but it didn't really fit. So here it is.

Sometimes, the powers of powered heroes are supressed, and sometimes downright removed. Magic, mutant collars that nullify powers, et al. It doesn't stop some heroes however, as many of them have worked alongside heroes who either wore powered armor, used gadgets, or Martial Arts. I can list a few that I've seen over the years:

Ben Grimm: When he lost his powers, Mr. Fantastic created a suit of armor that replicated his abilities, though to a weaker degree

The X-Men: Most of them have undergone extensive martial arts training, and there were a few mutants who began to use technology when the majority of them lost their powers permanently

Superman: His controversial energy form due to a containment suit (I forgot where, but there were rumors that his containment suit actually made him more powerful than he was with his original powers)

It's a rather small list, as it's what I could come up with at moment.

    Are there any others?
  10. I see this in every generation of gaming that comes around.

In the Genesis and SNES era, everything was a platformer.

In the PlayStation era, everything was either a JRPG or a fighting game

In the PlayStation 2/XBOX/GameCube era, everything was a sandbox game

Now in the PlayStation 3/Xbox360 era, everything is a first person shooter

Some of his arguments have merit, and some don't. When it comes to RPGs, it's not usually buff guys.....it's teenagers who master swordsmanship after their first battle.
  11. I think the Spectre already answered this question, and said no.

Spectre has no problem punishing murderers, however, and even he can't (and won't) judge the Joker.

  13. I saw many that were similar to my rules.

-No sharing influence between characters. The only exception to this rule is for new characters, who get a million. Other than that, each character must attain his own influence

-Once I begin playing a new character, I do not stop playing as him until I hit level 50.

-No powerlevels, at all. I hate missing content, especially Croatoa.

-No repeating powersets across the same AT. (I'm really thinking about breaking this rule though)

-No female characters. I'm sorry, but other than fighters, RPGs, and Dynasty Warrior type games, I just can't play as them.

I have more, but these are my top ones.

What with Toril being a solid planet the size of Jupiter that doesn't seem to generate the appropriate amount of gravity a hyperdense planet that size should.

Babylon 5 tended to use a pretty straightforward nomenclature. Star and sysdtem were most often called [name] and the corresponding planets [name] [roman numeral]. So Proxima III was the third planet from the sun in the Proxima system. Though settled planets, especially important ones, often had proper names such as Centauri Prime, Minbar or Z'ha'dum.

Toril is actually the size of Jupiter? News to me.
  16. It's a question that I really don't hear many answers to. I was able to find a couple, such as Krypton formerly being in the Andromeda Galaxy. Most other settings that have had main characters visit other galaxies (Star Trek) didn't stay in the galaxy long enough to actually see anything.

As far as fantasy planets go, like Athas (Dark Sun), or Toril (Forgotten Realms), the planet is named, but its' star usually isn't, so it makes it impossible to determine where it is in our galaxy. (Or any other) (There are exceptions though. The Blue Lantern planet Odym orbits the star Polaris, so that determines that the planet is located in the Milky Way.) Or perhaps the star IS named, but isn't named after one that was discovered in real life. (So I suppose the reader can determine what galaxy, if they even think that big)

So......is there any list out there that can somewhat answer my question?
  17. I always wondered why Marvel insisted on creating their own version of Superman when they had The Mighty Thor the entire time. IMO, he is Marvel's Superman.

Wow... just wow... People, let the trained professionals handle the crime clean up. Yes not all cops are good folks but our hopefully most are and at the very least they are trained to deal with this stuff..
I've met some real police officers who say the training they are given usually isn't enough. Now if every police officer underwent Marine Corps type training however........
  19. I would undertake this if I could find martial arts teachers that teach the art how it was meant to be used (or how the arts were originally used), and not the watered down sports competition versions.

And if I had the following:

-Gadgets to help even the playing field when I am outnumbered

-The best body armor money can buy

-Official sanction, so that I can't get into any legal trouble
  20. *watches as a Black Lantern ring bids a dead thread rise*

  21. I am on a desktop, also running HeroStats. I've also noticed a drop in FPS when running in Windowed mode. Will try lowering ingame resolution to see if that has any effect.

So...if all you do is your missions at +0/+0, vendor stuff and occasionally list for 1 and get some thousands, occasionally millions back, you're not going to be swimming in inf. When you see what Archie and Fury Flechette did, it took some involvement beyond "press a button to shoot bad guy, press a button to list for 1 on Market" and that's likely what frustrated people. Heck, I have a good friend that's an occasional player now that hardly ever uses the Market except for salvage purchases and when they get "too expensive" he uses AE. He rarely sells anything at the Market unless the last 5 are for 50 million+. He complains bitterly about a piece of salvage being worth 5 million and a LOTG 150 million, but his Mind/Psy Dom is Perma at level 30...heh.

It's easy for us to forget that a whole lot of people out there don't read the forums and just get frustrated when they see high prices on the Market. Not everyone know what pools certain items come from or whether what they have is worth anything.

If you team a lot, you might not get a lot of great drops either...so yeah, I don't have hard numbers but I imagine there are a fair number of players that see high prices, get frustrated and either move on or come here to complain about prices and ask for caps. Since a lot of the income is generated at 50, you wonder if they get to 50.

I mean, inf isn't an issue here at all (just outfitted my Grav/TA ) but I certainly wouldn't expect a new player to be able to flip crafted IOs, know which pools to roll stuff for and so on. The inquisitive will ask here, others will complain while others will get frustrated and either stay because of the gameplay and use SOs or just figure it out on their own.

Valid points. I will admit that in the past, when someone would say that they didn't even know about the forums, I would raise my eyebrow in confusion.

I did something similar to this on several of my scrappers. (Began a few months ago.) Each of them started off with nothing. I set my goal to 400 million for each scrapper, and as of today, 3 of them have surpassed that. (Working on my 4th and 5th scrappers now.)

My brutes had the easiest time. They also started off with nothing. They blinked, and bam, 450 million on each brute. (I have two)

What do I do? I just play missions and cash in AE tickets when I play missions in AE. Average time for each character: about a week.

I probably should have set my goal for each character higher.
