  1. good thread on PSUs. will help you pick the right wattage and has a link to a list of recommended brands:

    http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...alculator.html
  2. i'd go with a GTX 570, but the 560Ti is a great card for the money.

your PSU is overkill for your setup. a good 600W PSU would be fine.
  3. i love my EVGA GTX 570. it performs wonderfully. note that the GTX 570 isn't a very good overclocker though, so i grabbed the factory overclocked SSC model.

EVGA also has a great warranty.
  4. hi there,

would someone be so kind as to post their version.ini file for me? or at least paste the contents of the file for me? the file should be right in your City of Heroes folder.

i'm trying to get a new install of CoH: Architect Edition running under Linux with the Universal Linux Launcher, and apparently a new install doesn't come with a version.ini file. i can't try connecting to the patch server until i get the file.

i have what i think is my install version number from CoH.checksum, but i don't know the format of the version.ini file.

thank you for your time and assistance!
  5. God, this is depressing. how tragically unnecessary this is.

well, my subscription is up soon anyway...

good-bye, CoH. we had a great run.

    =(

thanks Cuppa, but i won't buy Windows. also, the command to skip the updater and launch the game directly doesn't appear to be working for myself and others at this time.
  7. i'm just going to chime in here also as a Linux user. i love CoH, been following the game since 2001.

i'm very disappointed at this turn of events. it's a sharp turn from the way Paragon has traditionally dealt with their customers, which was to communicate with us and work with us to get the best gaming experience for everyone within reason.

i understand that Linux has never been supported, but that didn't stop the devs from, at one time, communicating with the WINE community and Codeweavers to try and help get CoH running under WINE.

it seems like this heavy-handed change over to the NCSoft launcher is done without real concern for the experience of the playerbase and all those having problems, not just on Linux, but also on Windows and on the almost over-looked Mac platform.

it's a trend that concerns me and is showing a growing distance between the devs and the players.

i hope that i am wrong, and i hope that in the future a more universal method for launching the game will be implemented.

until that time, i'm afraid i must cancel my subscription.

take care, and enjoy the game.

by and large i agree with you that this is poor form on NCSoft/Paragon's part and we should speak up, but i also agree with Bill that, well, i can't really *blame* them as it's well within their right. it's more that i always hope a company will start making the other choice and go the extra mile for their players.

i know of at least one MMO that does, and i'll be going to play their game instead, it seems.

This isn't true anymore. Yes, it was true back in 1999, but it hasn't been true since Mepis revolutionized the LiveCD install back in 2003.
we may have to agree to disagree here. Linux becoming more accessible finally got me into it with Ubuntu a few years back, but it's clear that the strength of the OS is in my freedom to do (most) whatever i want with it, and that requires some elbow grease. heck, that's part of the fun. that should be clear to any user from looking at any Linux community forum or wiki.

but you're also correct that whenever i recommend Linux to people, i do make it clear that at some point they most likely will have to "just do without." i can get a LOT of progs running, but i'll never get them all. and really, i don't have to. i have enough games that do work, and i'll just go play those. they're pretty awesome too. =)

it's a shame that City of Heroes will soon become one of the games i have to do without, but who knows, people are resourceful, maybe someone will have a change of heart. i've played at least one game that required .NET, so we'll see what the community does.
  9. je: i haven't seen any actual workarounds for the launcher. care to share?

as for new users to Linux, anyone who is dedicated enough to run Linux full time will do what is necessary to run the progs they want. what more can we ask of anyone?

as for Paragon and NCSoft, all we can do is try to appeal to them.

in the end, everyone makes their own choices.

curveball: awesome, looking forward to it. i've followed the bug on WineDB but i've seen nothing useful to me as of yet.
  10. any progress on this? since they're now pushing for the new launcher by Aug 4th i've started testing it. i've got the same "can't find the path" error.
  11. did you try applying the -renderthread 0 tag? it seems to be working for a lot of people.

    Freedom DVD?

hi there. quick question: will CoH Freedom come in box form with a DVD, or will it be download only?

    thanks!
  13. listen to Father Xmas. here's a good link for educating oneself about PSUs and what to buy:
    http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...alculator.html

generally people overbuy on their PSU, and they actually shouldn't unless you are planning a specific upgrade path. it's better to get closer to the power you actually use if you're looking for power efficiency.

as for sound cards, budget? i prefer a dedicated card over the USB chips (they're not very good.)

a Xonar DG is a great entry level sound card at $35:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-020-_-Product

I personally have a Xonar D1 and you can go there if you want to spend a little more for better quality (~$90. the DX is the same card as the D1 just for a PCI-e connection.)

if you go Xonar, be sure to download and use the Unified Xonar drivers. i found them to be superior to the Asus drivers.

also, when doing sound upgrades, make sure that you have a decent set of speakers or headphones that can make use of a better source. it won't matter how good your source is if you funnel it through a set of cheapo cans. =)

    good luck!
  14. you can also try applying the -renderthread 0 tag. it worked for me and another user in this thread from yesterday about the Loading bug: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=265369
  15. it may not be relevant here, but i had a similar problem this morning with the Legacy launcher and setting the -renderthread 0 tag solved it for me, but i'm under Linux.

just thought i'd toss it out there just in case.
  16. hey there. i just resubbed, and since the last time i played CoH i've moved over to Linux full time.

    Kubuntu 11.04
    Nvidia GTX 570

i just wanted to report that CoH runs beautifully under Crossover Games Linux 10.1.

i have all the Ultra graphics settings available and have maxed them out except for AA which i have at 16x.

    the game is smooth.

the only "bug" i see is that the chat window retains focus, so i have to hit Escape to get out of it.

    that's it.

    excellent running game.

AE has not been thoroughly tested, but seems to be fine.

Incarnate system not tested as i have no Incarnates. =)

i've recently heard that CoH will be moving over to the NCSoft Launcher. please, i implore you, don't do this. the game runs wonderfully, there's no reason to just shut us out.
i resubbed for a few reasons:

    1) i love CoH
    2) i'm excited about the changes coming with Freedom.
    3) to ask you to not shut out the Linux community with the NCSoft launcher.

please consider us. we also love your game. =)

    thanks!
  17. Hi there. Can anyone clarify for me the best way to utilize these pets?

Should I use them to shore up weak spots, or further emphasize strengths?

For example. I have a brute with good resistance, so do I go for higher damage and res, or give him the defense pet since I lack that?

    Thanks!
  18. yes please!

it's sad because at this point i've had to give up on old CoH contacts because i don't want to waste my time on those old filler missions and trying to figure out how navigate the Contact tree labyrinth in order to hit the Story Arc i want.

i've tried to just use Ouroborus for those old missions, but that's a bit, i dunno, immersion breaking.

i'd really like to be able to do those arcs at the appropriate time in the life of the character. please clean it up and bring it up to the standards you've established with CoV and GR.

    thanks!
  19. what City of Heroes needs most right now is a revamp of the Power Pools.

the Power Pools are a great way to add little bits of variety and flavor to every AT without having to design out whole traditional powersets. unfortunately, the Power Pools remain virtually unchanged since launch.

with the recent (and welcome) change to Stamina, now would be a great time to revamp this awesome yet neglected feature of CoH.

Power Pools are meant to be viable little flavorful additions to any AT. it's the place to put some general powers that any Super could ostensibly have.

for example, adding new martial arts powers or animations to the Fighting Pool. after all, anyone can have a little martial arts training, and while they may not be as awesome as the pure Martial Artist, it can provide players with more power choice options to more fully realize their vision of their character without going with a full on free-form power choice system like one of our competitors.

general gadgets is another good option to add to the pool.

more animations (and color customization) are also a must. it can take a power like Heal Other and make it more magical, so that the Magic origins will feel more open to taking it.

there is a lot of great potential in the Power Pool system that is unfortunately handicapped by its dated coding. when people criticize CoH for it's limited power archetype structure, they never really consider the variety the Power Pool system adds, and i think that's because it's being woefully under utilized.

and, of course, this revamp should include a re-examination of the power pool powers themselves and their effects, in order to make some powers more viable. the Presence pool for example, while conceptually awesome, often fails to deliver.

any thoughts? what additions and changes would you like to see to the Power Pools?

    hi there. quick question:

is it worth it to slot hover for flight speed at all? or am i going to bump up against some kind of limit to how fast hover can be?

    thanks!
