Quote:of my handful of 50's most generate little to no inf via sporadic 'real' gameplay, one (the Goat) generates a fair amount through off-and-on gameplay with the silder bumped way up and one generates a massive amount relative to play time- my fire/axe farming tank.I "The set of all 50s" is definitely suspect, because it includes both level 50s that aren't played often after they hit the cap and level 50s that farm influence or are played enough to generate large amounts of influence.
as an example of the point. -
Quote:Pocket D provides no services and so has no need of multiple locations for player convenience.
Which also, frankly, puts the lie to the markets ever being social hotspots, as people were given choices of *multiple* places to go both for convenience and to avoid crowding. You'll note that we don't have Pocket D, E, F and G to deliberately spread people out.
Or do you actually think making players travel from Peregrine or wherever to Atlas just to sell their junk is good game design?
While they're at it they could just get rid of all the trainers except Lady Liberty, eh? -
I'd love to see a Market kiosk in Pocket D, like one of those little Starbucks booths by the front door of a supermarket.

status effects are always troublesome for a blaster- with a dp/dev, you should be able to mitigate most of the annoyance with caltrops. If you're dealing with a spawn you know generates annoying status effects, it can be helpful to pull them to a corner or other obstacle where you've laid out your caltrops. Shoot someone, run back behind your trops where they can't see you then open up once they're all stumbling around in slo mo.
Not completely foolproof, but does vastly reduce your exposure. -
If you can't grasp the distinction between people paying for game advantage with legal tender or earning it through game world actions, you're confused.
Quote:And that is exactly how many people are quoting pay to win as bought from PM. -
Quote:As you seem confused perhaps a definition will be helpful:I still dont see a difference... Many of you fail to realize that people "pay to win" and have been before the PM. There were outside sources that sold in-game inf for sooooo long and still do. People that have purchased inf from an outside source and still bought them off WW or BM. Also for those that are paying real currency as a subscript fee already paying for inf they earn, so that too should be called pay to win. Hell in that light EVERYTHING should be pay to win.
Basically it just seems like people that gripe about not getting that 1 billion inf drop on BM or WW, labels purchases off of the PM as pay to win as an insult versus a technical term... I will admit I would be one to buy it from PM before I drop my inf on an overpriced purple on WW or BM, but rest assured those purchases will remain VERY slim...
Pay to Win : Using legal tender to purchase in-game advantage.
So, using cash on costume parts is not pay to win, but using cash on enhancements is. Supporting RMT'ers is definitely pay to win, as well as being 'illegal' in the context of the game.
For my part, I don't see it as a pejorative term in the context of the Paragon Market, as any profits realized go directly to the game's bottom line- I'm all for the game surviving and thriving and they can sell whatever they want on the market to that end. -
Quote:Much as NPCs aren't equivalent to PCs when it comes to providing a creative social environment, suggesting something doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea- witness your antipathy for my notion. Dig through Sam Tow's post history, I'm sure you'll find comprehensive suggestions for avoiding contact with other players entirely.Edit:
Adding a way to avoid going to the auction houses have been around since 2007 (I found a post from August 2007 asking for a base terminal for the auction houses), a few months after Issue 9 (May 2007) brought them to the game. Given the long-standing requests to not have to go to the auction houses, I don't think this suggestion has a chance of succeeding.
Terrific for Sam, certainly, but of dubious value to the game as a whole.
the two main prongs of my idea are
1: Convenience fee for using remote terminal = inf sink.
2: No transaction fee at market = incentive for those who care about inf, potentially enlivening the public space of the game.
That nobody's complaining much about the proposed fee but are howling LOUDLY at the prospect of brushing shoulders with the unwashed masses is interesting. -

unless they've changed things since I asked for advice lo, those many moons ago, Fire Ammo is the ticket.

Quote:I get the idea you're after, but other than the nekkid hill in Talos all those spots are weren't so much discovered as colonized- when you combine services with relatively congenial geography the 'hotspot' aspect is inevitable. This is just my opinion, but gathering spots shouldn't be made so much as discovered.
Markets, pre-AH command, were instant hotspots...rather like creating an artificial reef from old cars. -
every time this thread pops up on the 'new posts' list the subject line makes me smile.
GJ, OP! -

caltrops is an awesome power, but the fear effect that endears it so to blasters & squishies makes it a PITA for any AT intending to hold aggro.
-
@Blood Red Arachnid:
Sam is an extreme edge case in this discussion- he likes what he likes, he plays how he plays, and there's no point debating him on it because that's just how he rolls. Nobody's going to convince him of anything when it comes to how he approaches the game...and I think Sam would agree with me here. =P
So, it's best to note his objections, admit your idea would never be able to accommodate him and move on with the discussion. -
Quote:My one stalker is a katana/willpower concept character (normal guy w/ sword) who was always super fun but is now actually *good* following the latest round of buffs. After hearing and seeing the stalker really shine on teams and in solo play I've decided to give up my usual support ATs and try a stalker. I want to play one but not the staff type. I'm probably looking for a type of stalker that has great survivability and can team as easily as solo, since I am team oriented. Since I am so new at this AT, what powers would you recommend? Do you have a build you'd be willing to share with a new "convert?" I would really be grateful for your insights. Thanks!
Unsure of how well other sets work, but this pairing is great. Good resists, a heal, and I can get some good defense going by throwing Parry into the mix. -
there is no 'right' way to play a video game, with the caveat that in a multiplayer environment you should show proper respect for other players.
however you play, whatever style you enjoy, that's 'right'. -
This would be a fine model for any theoretical 'street crime' zone happenings, make them all 'opt in' rather than imposing them on players.
-
Quote:I'm sure someone would have made your wish come true by now if it were a viable business model. =PI would pay real money for a game that's full of soloers, personally, but that's besides the point.
MMOs rely on social networks to survive & encouraging socializing, or at least supplying a congenial environment for players to bump into each other and form connections is a requirement. As a someone who is very, very rarely able to team I dislike the Forced/Strongly Encouraged Teaming model, which is why I didn't stick around That Big Fantasy MMO past hitting the level cap and exhausting the solo content.
CoH does a great job balancing the desires of those of us who primarily solo with the 'Team-verse', but it could do a much better job of creating spaces where the SoloVerse & the TeamVerse intersect.
That's where heightened zone engagement would come in.
The general design resistance to this kind of thing seems rooted in the memories of people who were traumatized by queuing for things in Everquest. This created an aversion to putting anything worthwhile out in 'public' where anyone could get at it. A more constructive response would've been "Ok, how can we still put 'important' content out in the open without it creating a mess?"
In CoH terms, the solution could be to have so much of it going on simultaneously that nobody needs to wait. Taking the previous idea of 'street crime' to heart, there would be *so* many muggings, *so* many robberies, etc etc taking place that if players ran into one that was occupied they'd just continue on their way and find another that wasn't.
That Big Fantasy Game had some zone content that, for the most part, worked fine. Once in a while I'd run across something that was 'overfished' but not very often. -
I'm not a fan of simplicity & believe that d20 ruined gaming, at least from a rules perspective.
My favorite game of all time from the standpoint of pure mechanics was Deadlands, a wildly idiosyncratic system that was inseparable from its setting. The cookie cutter takeover of d20, with its foolish insistence that every 'universe' play by the same interchangeable rules, killed my interest in following the industry.
and mechanically, d20's were a bad idea in the long ago when Chivalry & Sorcery made them the centerpiece of its system & they're still a bad idea. -
Quote:There's been exactly one dud* booster pack over the years- the Party Pack of random emotes. Why don't the devs put something like the retro sci-fi pack as a reward over the mech or celestial. We have had many iffy costume packs released over the years (Carnival and it's few pieces; the mutant pack was meh; the pocket D pack was ok - IMO).
Every single other pack was greeted with general, if not universal, enthusiasm.
Quote:Why have, IMO, the best costume packs (mech and celestial) at tier 9. Perhaps they could make one of the rewards something like shield wall or glad armor procs (or some other rare IO).
Not MOAR POWER, not inventions, not 'content', nothing.
Also costumes make the perfect premium, conferring zero competitive advantage, real or perceived, on the recipient. It can be (and remain) as exclusive as they like without affecting play balance one iota.
*'dud' in terms of community reception only. I have no idea how it sold, but it was roundly castigated by the forumites. -
I got a lot of smart people to think about /dev in my 'ar/dev retrofit' thread- DP isn't AR, but there should be some synergies there for you to think about.
long story short, caltrops + capping your ranged defense is a great way to improve survivability. -
Okay, doing a bit of Lizardroid tonight, finishing up Laura Lockhart's arc.
Her dialogue is a bit too self consciously sassy for my tastes, but I'm enjoying the missions well enough. I like the Steel Canyon instance one quite a bit- basically a simple 'kill all' but with nice window dressing. My habit of ignoring most mission text nearly got me in trouble here, as I didn't notice the timer until it was almost too late, dawdling about the map. Got the last guy at the towers with 10 seconds to spare.
5th Column are just better than Council, period.
Hung a beating on a 5th officer, stole his mask and winkeled some info out of their informant- off to stave off an assault on UNSF outpost.
Okay, now THAT was a terrific mission.
Nice use of the 'destroyed lab' map, seemed like a typical 'find the hostage' deal, but with a twist. And the giant hoard at the end was a great surprise- thanks to copious use of inspirations and the lovely AoE of Thunder Strike & Jacob's Ladder I actually took them all out, including the red boss- left me feeling quite heroic, even as I was gasping and wheezing for Endurance at the end.
Now to put the smackdown on that punk Leon, who I had pegged as a traitor from the get-go.
Off to the mish, happy to find a nicely appointed 5th Column warehouse instead of the usual cave. Mow a couple of spawns & hit 18, used the big defense to zip to the end & find Leon.
Nice dialog, the battle starts and I have to pop some insps to deal with the alpha. Hit Build Up, Thunder Strike....and that's it for Leon?! WTH. The 5th stooges take more effort to mop up than Leon did!
Slightly anti-climactic, but still a fun mish and a good arc.
Color me satisfied.
Hit 'find contact' and it's off to Jim Temblor in Faultline- looks like time to find my old pal Fusionette again! -
I took it for one of my lowbie flyers- hit a level with no 'must have' power and thought "why not?"
It's pretty cool for just flying around- it's like Fly with the air control of Hover. I didn't notice it being appreciably faster (but then I didn't have it slotted) and have no idea if its defensive bonus is worth while or what the end use is like.
But it was fun and I didn't regret taking it. -
Quote:there was a time when it made no sense from an efficiency standpoint to run missions- travel time + crummy mission XP made it much less time consuming to street sweep. Plus, in the olden days you'd get just about as much interesting plot and character from street sweeping as you would from running missions. =Pthere used to be more mobs and such in the game, until someplayer showed with hard numbers that street sweeping was a better xp/inf vs risk/time. The devs responded by making the street mobs fewer and worth less. After a LOT of screaming, they added the 1/2 debt in missons as a bone for players.
These days, the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction, transforming City of Heroes into City of Instances.
