the movie could be 10x better and smarter than its trailer and still be held back from 1st grade.
*shudder* -
It's been what, 24 hours?
I'm sure people will figure it out before too long. -
Quote:perfect description, Ful.I know at level 21 I went into every fight on my new Scrapper paying attention, but went into every fight on my new Blaster wondering how I was going to survive.
I've been playing a psi/psi blaster as part of my lowbie rotation lately and I've noticed he's the *only* character who regularly burns inspirations pro-actively, before he engages a spawn.
Everyone else I burn 'em reactively, or before big fights.
That blaster, inspirations are practically part of his attack chain. -
Quote:The unlimited target cap makes pre-ED more powerful. When one person can herd up an entire map and another person can kill them all in 1 shot....nothing today can match that, obviously.Quote:In terms of what we can deliver, pre-aggro cap, pre-target-cap and unlimited mob "stacking" meant AoEs could affect more targets at once, so total damage dealt was far higher for AoEs. Single-target damage? Characters today can't even see the pre-ED ones behind them any more.
I'm a big fan of IOs and wouldn't want to go back to the olden days (well, except for my ar/dev blaster, who'd bum rush that time machine and trample anyone who got in his way).
But, I do have fond memories of herding Nemesis by the ferry in PI with my buddy, stacking them up and then annihilating *all* of them with one Shadow Maul (for his DM/Regen) or Golden Dragonfly (for my kat/regen).
And of course epic Perez Park pulls, with someone herding the entire outer ring to be demolished in a flash by a blaster.... -
Dr Graves- Hearts of Darkness: Price of Victory
Okay, finally got around to the rest of Graves.
Overall, terrific stuff.
I'd rank the writing a notch above the excellent Twinshot arcs just for the degree of difficulty, walking that villain tightrope. Gotta be evil, but not too evil or you lose your player, can't be too much of a lacky or you lose your player, etc etc. Authoring Villain missions have challenges above and beyond the general requirement of involving story and interesting characters.
It neatly wove in famous/infamous landmarks of old timey levelling (particularly liked the mission in the middle of the Luddite hunting grounds by the ferry in Cap- many's the lap I ran around those warehouses to avoid running the same ol' same ol' Cap contacts again), introduced you to game features in a nicely immersive way *and* provided engaging gameplay.
On this first go-round the latter episodes seem more re-playable than Twinshot- it is dialog/interaction heavy compared to much of the game's content, but the dialog isn't as intrinsic to enjoying the storyline as it was with Twinshot.
Anyway!
So, going after my 'fellow' villains was fun. The missions were well designed, not repetitive and held my interest. The character dialog is terrific, Zephyr in particular. Crosscut's mission was appropriately vile & the way it played into his remaining 'loyal' during the confrontation with Graves was a neat twist.
As a longtime CoV-only player, I really liked the chat with Boris the Russian.
The finale of this arc was strong- the villain double-cross during the ambush of Graves, followed by the revelation that Dollface was actually a huge alien threat was actually surprising and very fun to play through.
The Sirocco deus ex machina didn't bother me, Dollface was set up as enough of a menace that it seemed reasonable my lowbie self would need some help. It also neatly foreshadowed the idea of villain patrons at the higher levels.
Once again, didn't mind jogging back to actually speak with Graves in person- it was story appropriate.
With both Twinshot & Graves, I find myself hoping the devs add to their storylines in the future- I want to spend more time with all those characters, which isn't something I can say about very much content in this game. -
Quote:this is so ridiculous.Avoid it or is it prohibited? The main line makes it sound like, "well, sometimes we understand you may have to cuss, but try not to do it too often." Then you get a bit more firm. I'd think you could remove the
"Avoid using profanity," line and just make the first sentence the heading.
9. Profanity in any form is prohibited.
not the prohibition, the way they go about it.
so if I type in curse words and the filter turns them into whatever it turns them into, like this:
****
****
that's fine.
But if I use a longstanding comic book convention to self-edit, as Arcana did (like turning **** into 'ampersand/exclamation point/hashtag/percentage sign') that's just OVER THE LINE and not acceptable.
But what if I 'say' _______, or XXXXXXX?
If the profanity of the statement is clear from context, then whatever convention you use to mask the words should be irrelevant as readers inclined to notice it will notice it whether it's been replaced by typographic fiat or by WAFFLES or DOGBITE or whatever.
If **** isn't actionable, then neither should any other masking technique be actionable. -
why can't I delete this?
silly forums.
anyway, post incoming....hit 'post' by mistake. -
Quote:Sorry I got a little snarky, that's from hangover in another thread and I shouldn't have put it on you....yes it is...I can. It's because I'm in the minority, and I know it. That doesn't mean it's not important to me.
I'm not a 'mob rule' guy- just because most people disagree with with you doesn't mean anything. In fact sometimes it means you're on the right path.
But costume options still seems like an odd choice of hill to die on.
I boycotted redside for quite a while due to the unfairness of the segregated markets, but I didn't up and quit the game over it.... -
I mostly like cut scenes, but I've said since they showed up in CoV there should be a way we can skip past them- ESC or something. Once you've seen them a couple of times, you don't need to see them again and sitting twiddling your thumbs while they play out gets old fast.
-
Quote:Well that's a totally reasonable position, and I just can't understand the devs stunning failure to cater to that demographic.I'm sure they will. But I'm very serious about it, and every time they release female costume options but not male ones to compensate, I get a little closer to cancelling my subscription and never coming back.

My rule of thumb is New = Good, Old = Bad.
=P
But as a new player, really you ought to just play everything and anything that comes your way- part of my appreciation of the great newer stuff Paragon's done comes from having spent years playing the, ah, less than stellar older content.
And to be honest, there are very few missions/arcs in the game so horrible you wouldn't want to play through them once....even stuff that just bugs me as a longtime vet, like the Hollows, would be fine for someone with fresh eyes. -
Quote:or, just make neat stuff people like and ignore silly GENDER WAR!!11 whining.Which is why they should quite simply stop designing any female-only costume pieces and only make gender neutral ones. Period.
Turing the costume creator into a unisex Gap outlet aimed at not offending above all other considerations is about the lamest reaction imaginable to this tempest in a teapot. -
Quote:I spent the 90's happily wallowing in indy publishing- Bone, Strangers in Paradise, Frank Miller's Dark Horse stuff (Sin City, Hard Boiled) etc etc.Holograms, foil, embossed....the 90s were a scary time in comics. This list is just the cherry on top.
I don't think I missed much with my impromptu boycott of the mainstream... =P -
Quote:That's what entertainment news media does, on all levels and in all genres. No putting words in my mouth, please.
It's not bad that it's not new, but Massively already had an article detailing the trial from back when it was -announced-. I just don't see a point to repeat the same information the same site has already had.
*shrug* -
Quote:They're a pre-made character.I have to ask - why exactly do you feel Khelds don't allow for your concept, backstory, etc?
You can take a pre-made character and ignore all that stuff and do your own thing with it, but what's the point when there are plenty of other options? If their gameplay was addictive I might be able to get past it, but it doesn't appeal to me.
Quote:Genuinely curious here. Do you feel you *have* to go along with the Kheldian War storyline? Where even if you ignore it you "feel" like it's still there pushing you? (Kind of like some badgers tell me they "have" to get a badge, even if it's from doing something they don't like.)
Quote:Is it that you feel you have to take Nova/Dwarf?
That's what they are- alien whatsits.
It's the power that differentiates them from the pack- if I don't enjoy it, I may as well play something else.
Quote:Is it that you can't color the powers at this time? (Which may seem minor, but I get it for people not liking not having that customization.)
Quote:Is it the set powersets? (That is, unlike a Scrapper that can be one of several types of Scrappers, a Kheld is going to have a fixed set of powers to choose from.)
The reasons I like and dislike things in this game are ephemeral and I don't subject them to very much scrutiny. The first thing that came to mind here was "I don't like playing other people's characters", which the more I think about it the truer it feels. It's a bunch of little things that add up to one big thing.
I'm glad there are folk out there who enjoy them, it's always kind of cool running into one on the rare occasions I'm able to team, but the epic ATs in this game fall solidly in my Not Fun Continuum. -
I don't mind crashing nukes & have barely played any incarnate stuff so nothing to say on that front, but I always enjoyed Steelclaw's lists. Always at least amusing, frequently quite funny, periodically hilarious & possessed of an inimitable style that was instantly recognizable and always brought a smile to my face- a rarity on internet forums of any stripe.
As an irascible sort not prone to holding my tongue, I find it genuinely surprising that anyone (ANYONE) would be so put off by them they'd go out of their way to assail their author & drive him into retirement. Pretty lame.
Steel, I say WAFFLE the haters & let your list flag fly.
Anybody mouths off, /ignore.
My guess is you won't be missing much. -
I've tried a couple, they just don't do it for me
I'm not a big RPer, but my characters do all have a concept, backstory & way they interact with the game world that has to satisfy me if I'm to keep playing them beyond the first few levels.
Kheldians don't allow much room for that.
And it's not a performance issue, because I have the same attitude toward Banes & Widows, which are by all accounts quite powerful.
In RPG terms, playing one of the 'epic' ATs is like having the GM hand you a character sheet at the start of a campaign and that's never been my scene. -
neat treat, thanks Paragon Studios!

Quote:In my pre-premium sojourn I ended up at one of those other forums populated by assorted exiles, one of which personally sounded the CoH death knell every six months or so.Actually, I've been responding to this sort of thing for as long as Freedom's existence has been publicly acknowledged.
In fact, we're coming up on another anniversary for this game's death soon. We have about sixteen or seventeen of those a year, because this game has died quite a few times already.
Running across of his posts from around the time BAB's moved on gave me a chuckle. -
this compels me not note that Graham Linehan is on twitter- follow @glinner for news & amusement!

I don't get why movies are always so frenzied to cram everything possible into each film and rush, rush, rush through the mythologies of the comics they portray.
but Mandarin is thee iconic Iron Man baddie and I look forward to seeing how they translate him to the movie-verse. -
having seen many notions from this forum work their way into the game over the years, I must disagree with the OP's thesis.
But that didn't stop the thread title from giving me a morning chuckle.
