Quote:Yeah it is ironic that new McCoy is playing Dredd. Still I am confident that the movie will be faithful to the comics and well done. The only problem I foresee is that not many people in the states will know much about the character and thus not enjoy the movie very much. For what it's worth I think it's kinda cool that Karl Urban is doing this. He's clearly a good actor and even though he's played hard-line sci-fi action parts before for some reason the idea of the guy now playing Dr. McCoy being bad-a$$ is geek-tastically ironic.
Kind of like how some stated that John Carter of Mars was a cheap Tarzan ripoff....... -

He also comments on which ones disappointed him. -
Quote:The Stallone version was a nice try, but they screwed up too many things not just the fact that for about 75% of the movie he isn't wearing his helmet.I have nothing against Sylvester Stallone in general but I actually thought the 1995 Judge Dredd he starred in was very forgettable. I've only seen it once and have had no conscious desire to ever see it again. To me it rightly deserves the 5.1/10 rating it has on IMDB.
Frankly I'm always skeptical of any movie I'm introduced to via trailers. I have no real idea if this new Judge Dredd will be any good as a movie, but at this point I still have an open mind about it and will probably give it a chance. I could think of a lot of adjectives to describe the couple of trailers I've seen for it so far but "boring" is simply not a word I would use as an instant reaction to it. Sure it might not turn out to be wall-to-wall non-stop action, but if it's done right it doesn't -need- to be wall-to-wall non-stop action. *shrugs*
I agree that a movie with this character is probably a difficult movie-making challenge. The fact that by all accounts the 1995 movie did -not- nail it proves that. So again unless this new movie gets rated less than 50% by RottenTomatoes it'll probably be worth at least a matinee sometime, if for no other reason than to compare/contrast it to the 1995 movie.
John Wagner the co-creator of Judge Dredd visited the set of new Dredd a few times and is reported as being quite pleased with the cast and the movie.
Karl Urban stated in an interview about Stallone Dredd "When you can learn from your own mistakes that is good. When you can learn from other people's mistakes, that is even better!" -
Quote:The new Dredd isn't buddy cop, rest assured. Yes Anderson is with him but she is a rookie trainee that is assigned to ride with Dredd and see how it's done. Training with Dredd is indeed the school of hard knocksThat's been my take as well - more faithful, but dull.
Dredd is hard to do. It's filled with over the top situations and characters that visually the first movie captured well. At the same time, it's certainly not a buddy-cop action comedy and never should have been played as such.
We need a Dredd movie with the art direction of the first attempt, the serious tone of this second pass, punctuated with an underlying dark comedy/wit/social commentary all of its own. -
Quote:Well said.I think to myself, why is there no statue to honor the accomplishment of Mr. Armstrong? And then I realize that there is no statue large enough to sufficiently capture the magnitude or importance of what Neil Armstrong did. In ten thousand years of human history, he is the first human ever to set foot upon a world that was not Earth.
You want to see the memorial honoring him? Look up at the night sky.
You want to know how to properly honor him? Walk in his steps... and then keep walking.
I hope that when the first astronaut that sets foot on Mars they quote Neil Armstrong's famous words.
RIP Neil Armstrong -
Quote:I don't know, a rebooted Airwolf could be done as long as they aren't forced to lighten up the show like the original was. The new Airwolf helicopter would have to be sufficiently upgraded compared to the original in terms of tech and capabilities but that wouldn't be impossible. The stories would be the make or break much like the Knight Rider reboot. That series had too many characters for too long.Sadly I think the only way you'd have a show today centered around a believable "super-advanced" helicopter would be to have some kind of UAV. The future of combat aircraft is clearly going towards unmanned automated systems. The downside of that of course is that you wouldn't need a cool human pilot who'd serve as the main character of a show based on that.
Basically what I'm saying is that the days of shows like Airwolf and Knight Rider are probably better left as fond memories of the 80s. -
Quote:How about near the end of the pilot when a very angry Stringfellow Hawke used Airwolf to chase down its renegade creator Dr. Moffat? HAwke's orders from Archangel were to bring Moffat back for trial for treason among other charges and that if that couldn't be done then Hawk was authorized to use extreme prejudice. This is an Airwolf.
Funny. Rewatching that intro for the first time in decades I just noticed the body count in the INTRO is higher than some modern action shows runs.
Does shooting all of Airwolf's missiles at one man standing on top of a sand dune count as extreme prejudice or just plain old fashioned overkill? -
Quote:The logistical problems of Superman being in a relation with Lois Lane apply to any relation where one of the two has super strength. And I always thought man of steel woman of tissue was one of the stupidest things someone ever took seriously.
If that requires you to use mental gymnastics, I have to wonder how you don't think Supes hasn't destroyed a lot of things just by simple human actions.
*rollseyes*
For all the years Spider-man was married to MJ (before the stupid Mephisto erasure) those two would have had the same logistical problems given that Spidey's strength is in the 10ton range.
or when Grey Hulk worked in Las Vegas as Joe Fixit and had started a relationship with Marlo Chandler
or back in the Silver Surfer of the 80's/90's when Mantis hooked up with the Surfer, we are talking about a guy whose silver alloy is bonded to his skin and couldn't be removed at the time plus his super strength which he can increase via cosmic power absorption
or when She-Hulk was dating Wyat Wingfoot, long time friend of the F.F.
or the THING and Alica Masters
or Luke Cage being married and has a kid, I don't recall his wife having super strength (other powers, yes)
Superman's strength level being off the scale as it were of course makes his problems a bit more severe then the others I listed, but it is still the same logistic problem.
I think Superman expressed his overall frustration with all the power he has in the last episode of JLU when he finally got mad enough at Darkseid to just cut loose on him. "I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard! I'm always taking constant care not to break something, to break someone! Never letting myself lose control EVEN FOR A MOMENT because someone could die!" Upon which he proceeds to give Darkseid a super sonic FALCON PUNCH that probably could have sent Darkseid to the other side of the planet or into orbit if Superman didn't intercept him.
In fact that is another logistic problem: when two super strength beings like Hulk and THOR slug it out, one punch from either should send the other flying for miles but that doesn't seem to happen like it should very often does it? -

It's good that we won't see his eye sore art work now.
It's also good in that if what he's saying and implying are true that perhaps nuDC will fail and classic DC returns. -
Quote:The new Knight Rider suffered from too many cast members and characters, while it makes sense for Knight Rider to have a support team there was just too many. By the time they decided to cut some characters the damage was done.I don't know if you could do a reboot. The general concept was particular for the era, a private or secret organization with a piece of highly advance technology that outclasses anything else available in the world. We had Knight Rider, Airwolf, Street Hawk, Thunder in Paradise, The Highwayman, Viper and probably a show or two I can't remember off hand.
The problem is we're now a war weary country and I don't think a show about a covert super attack helicopter that intervenes around the world for US interests would be of interest to the general TV audience. Perhaps if the group controlling it had no loyalty to a particular country but intervenes for the good of the world (yes then it would be like Gundam 00 but with helicopters).
The re-image of Knight Rider died a quick death and I don't think any network would risk re-imaging any of those other series, even a network as desperate as NBC.
While I can agree that some war weariness has set in, a rebooted Airwolf tackling some of the modern world issues may not be so bad. When Airwolf first premiered our relations with certain countries were......strained,,,,to put it nicely. Like Dominic said in the pilot movie "Libya?! That's Khadaffi's sandbox, he doesn't like us!" Hawke's response: "And we don't like him!" A few new episodes showing terrorists being blasted may anger some and bring smiles to others. Plus with a certain Soviet leader these days making threatening noises about resuming the Cold War, etc. etc. etc. then new episodes of a new Airwolf outfighting the Russians would again fit with the times, just like back then before they lightened up the show a bit.
Also can you imagine the tech and firepower a modern revamped Airwolf could have? -
Quote:Perhaps the best TOS Star Trek episode, an excellent performance by Windom as Commodore Decker as he basically became Captain Ahab and the Doomsday machine was the great white whale.I'll always remember him as Commodore Decker in one of the best ST:TOS episodes ever made: "The Doomsday Machine".
RIP Mr. Windom.

Sounds interesting, I did like that show back then.
I'd also be curious to how a modernized reboot would turn out if such a thing ever happened. Just make it a reboot and not a continuation of the horrible 4th season -
RIP Phyllis Diller
Also last week the Welcome Back, Kotter family lost Arnold Horshack -

This will be on the blu ray deleted scenes section but they have released it for us to view now. It's basically more of Banner after Hulk plowed through the building and was greeted by the security guard.
The only thing that could have made this scene cooler is if Bill Bixby had been alive to play to the security guard. Banner of the past chatting with Banner of the present. -

Mileage will vary with people about some of the entries on this list. However I doubt anyone will disagree with the #1 show on the list.... -
Your idea is interesting, however there may be a simpler solution, although this may be more of a quick-fix or stop gap:
1. During the Winter Event: log in anytime during the event and as a holiday gift your character receives ALL current anniversary badges, be they the early blueside or redside anniversary badges as well as the anniversary badges after they unified them.
Example: a villain alt that was created when Cov first launched wouldn't have Celebrant, log in during the event and receive Celebrant and any other missing anniversary badges.
Alternatively such a plan to award all anniversary badges could wait until the next game anniversary.
Of course this would mean logging in all your alts, but if it is quicker then reprogramming the badges to be account based then so be it. -

Quote:I don't really see any need to worry, Marvel won't let Joss (or anyone) kill off any of the heroes in the movies. Unless they bring in Captain Mar-Vell of course since killing him then reviving and killing him again seems fashionable in the comics these days.I think GG's point was more that it wasn't a Joss project.
In his shows, even in comics he's written for, he's had freedom to kill off main/important/fan favorite characters.
Kill off Spike at the end of Buffy? Yeah! Let's do it!
"Kill" off Kitty Pride at the end of X-Men run? Yeah! Let's do it!
Kill off Wash at the end of Serenity? Yeah! Let's do it!
Killing off characters means this is serious!
With Avenger's Joss was kept under tighter control, in so much as if he did kill off any of those main Avengers, then their solo movie titles would suffer.
I've enjoyed almost everything Joss has done (okay Doll House left me unimpressed), which includes his Buffy: tVS movie (I quite enjoyed it), but he does have a tendency to kill off characters the fans don't want to see die.
In his own shows this isn't so bad. You feel for them. It's does add to the emotion.
In comics (that arent his Buffyverse) and this Marvel movie universe, it's a different story.
Also didn't Spike return from death in Angel? Killing Kitty Pryde? Feh this is Marvel we speak of, everyone knew she'd be back. Killing Shepard in Serenity is what got Mal motivated again to fight back against the Alliance instead of constantly running, killing Wash simply broke the "invincibility bubble" and showed that anyone of the crew could be killed at any time without warning. I'd say the only ones with "plot armor" to survive would have been River and Mal. -

Quote:I never said that I personally was expecting compensation, I was posting examples of what they COULD do to appease any ruffled feathers as it were since there will be SOME people that want compensation. Why would you expect ANY sort of compensation at all? You already received some bonus (a veteran reward and a costume slot) back when you earned yours during pre-Freedom. Removing just the badges from your characters doesn't undo that.
And since Freedom launched, there are no rewards associated with the yearly badges any longer. It's the same for all players, so why should anybody be compensated?
Are you talking about losing a few badges from your badge collector, reducing him from, say, 1402 to 1395 badges? Does that really matter if all other players also lose theirs? (Also, if you just want to show the age of a character, there's still the anniversary badges for that.)
Or are you complaining that you won't be able to gain the ones that other people already had? Yes, they might have received one more character slot for each YEAR the played longer than you, but they actually paid their subscription for that long time. Buying a character slot now is much cheaper than subscribing for a full year. Again, it's the same for all players, so nobody's put at a disadvantage.

Quote:Aye the handling could have been better, but that is water under the bridge now.Yeah the Devs' handling of this issue was almost worse than the problem itself.
A few months ago they finally sort of admitted that they had given up on getting these things to work after the CoH:Freedom changes basically broke the system. It's not like the awarding of Vet-type badges were ever a 100% error-free affair even before that. But the fact that they let people keep complaining about not getting their latest badges without letting everyone know they had already considered it a no-go was a bit irksome.
Since then people like Zwill have told us that the Devs still want to try to resolve the issue someday. But I pretty much consider it a lost cause despite the several suggestions we the players have offered them as reasonable alternatives.
IMO, it comes down to this: which is easier to implement,
1. Fixing a system that appears to be broke beyond recognition
2. Removing all vet badges and giving out paragon points as a compensation
I am not overly fond of badges being removed from the game (ref. the Great AE purge) as I prefer to see erroneous/obscenely high badge criteria readjusted. However in the case of the vet badges I think it is time to just remove them and be done with it.
Now comes the question: what should players get as an apology/compensation for having all 8 vet badges removed? Well players below Tier 8 in the new system as I recall get 400 paragon points per month, so lets do some math:
400 pts. per month times 12 months in a year = 4800 points. Now let's take 4800 points times eight since there are 8 yearly vet badges in the game: 4800 times 8 = 38400 points.
Now, given that tracking all players actual Tier status is problematic since anyone can buy points and thus gain tokens and tier levels, it is unlikely they can determine what anyone should be at if they never bought points. So that would likely mean giving everyone 38,400 paragon points as a compensation for all 8 yearly vet badges being removed.
So would 38,400 paragon points being awarded to you make you smile and want to spend them? Would you still feel upset or dare I say "violated" at the removal of the yearly vet badges?
Or should something other then paragon points be awarded? Free game time? Coupon for receiving one of the recently released power sets? Restore some of the "lost" AE badges into the AE system with more reasonable requirements to obtain? Award all the game anniversary badges to all characters in the game? A Resurrection of Statesman event similar to how we brought back Red Widow? Character slots/transfers/rename tokens?
What do YOU think would be good compensation for the removal of the yearly vet badges?
