  1. I took a breather for a while, and I'm back now and wondering if I've missed the introduction of anythi g cool that I mifht be i terested in. Last I was keeping up was when Going Rogue went live and then when the first Incarnaye stuff appeared. I did all the Praetorian content etc, took my 50 through the first Incarnate arcs.

What new content/stuff has been introduced recently? I see mention of strike targets. What's that all about? I like to solo a lot, not really ibterested in WoW-style raiding, and like all factions.

I noticed that Storming Citadel had been played, thanks v much I was also happy to see that it hadn't been affected.

AS for slamming the door on my way out...I never thought I'd be so ambivalent about CoH as i am at present. The Incarnates stuff was intruiging, but it seems to involve lots of high-level endgame raiding, which isn't my thing really. I'd be quite happy to stay fooling around in the AE, but this copyright filter thing is ludicrous. It feels like my tastes aren't being catered for in the game. So what's the point of paying for it every month?

  3. I take a breather, come back, and find this situation. it;s very depressing. I don't think I'll bother checking any of my arcs.

The MA used to be awesome. I hope they fix it.

The steampunk booster is the first one I'm not buying. Can't be bothered. CoH has gone a bit 'meh' for me. It seems to be turning into WoW. Weird.

    Eco.

EDIT: I finished playing an AE arc, and thought i might as well have a look. I went into the Edit screen for The Audition Parts 1-3 since it wouldn't let me Play it, and as soon as i clicked on mission 1, CoH crashed with a 'fatal error' popup window.

    Pff.
  4. I'm still subscribing, and I'll be subscribing until they shut the game down, but my CoH-time these days is measurable in minutes per week. That's partly because the Incarnate stuff in Issue 19 wasn't really conducive to my style of play, byut mostly because i recently really got back into playing boardgames, so I've been playing Axis & Allies, Cosmic Encounter, Arkham Horror, Space Hulk and Android with my mates in my poker room rather than PC gaming. I hear that there's some sort of global 'lfg' queueing system or sth coming in I20, though, and if that makes it easier for me to find TFs at strange hours, then i'm well up for that.

I'll always love the MA, and from the ticket trickle I get when i log in, it seems that some of my arcs are still getting plays, so that's cool, but I can't see myself writing the huge mega-arc I'd planned for my next one.

I wish i could get back into the 'reviews', though - I used to love doing them.

  5. Cheers, MB.

I think i must have done something wrong, however. I pointed the updater at the folder where the install is, and its now been doing it's thing for about half an hour and it says ''fixing files: piggs/playermale..."etc and there's 11 hrs to go apparently.

I'll just let it get on with it over night i guess.

  6. CoH was installed on my E drive. I recently changed my C drive which had windows on it, and now I'd like to tweak stuff so that i don't have to download the game again. How can i divert wherever the updater looks so that it finds my extant CoH?

  7. My uploader has a link to an Issue 19 Strike Pack, but i can't find it in the Ncsoft Store anywhere.

    Anyone know where it is?

Gimmick fights tend to turn out to be fights, like the Battle Maiden fight, that require you to keep track of time and all sorts of features.

I know this veers into dangerous territory, but this is where my attention starts waning. I am a light roleplayer and character concept builder. This is one reason why this game has always been home to me. It encourages alts, trying on concepts, and building a variety of characters that have more personality than a chess piece does.

The typical gimmick fight, in my experience, is built out of giving the player things to monitor other than his own health and attacks, and requiring the player to act in response to those things. You must see the sign, break from what you are doing, and go stand elsewhere or do something else. The higher you "progress" the more of these gimmicks are added, and the worse the consequences become for failing to respond.

(This is also why gimmick fights seem almost inevitably to disfavor melee characters, and especially melee DPS. You can't contribute if you are constantly being forced to break
off and stand somewhere not next to the boss. Battle Maiden is not fun for tankers, but far worse for brutes.)

More importantly: my experience is that players do not play through these gimmicks by actually paying attention to the encounters themselves. Not as they are presented by the naked game software, at any rate. They delegate, and resort to technology. Add-ons, scripts, and timers are all used to automate the process of responding to the gimmicks and coordinating the correct action. Ventrilo and other voice chat programs are used to coordinate groups. One player with an otherwise undemanding role is assigned the task of monitoring a given gimmick and sounding alarms.

The gimmicks themselves may well be founded in interesting lore and beautifully animated. All of this is wasted effort in my eyes. The player base's response to the gimmicks will spoil any pleasure that might be taken from it.

For me, this breaks immersion, and turns the game into a series of dull rehearsals. You are no longer reacting to the hostile character with your own character's imagined voice. You aren't reading the NPC chatter for what it says. You're monitoring team chat for scripted instruction on what to use next. You're talking with other players in your telephone voice. And you can't see the content that lies beyond unless you endure these mechanics.

At this stage, my interest in the game will inevitably start to wane. I do not want that to happen here. Please keep that kind of gimmick encounter out of this game. City of Heroes absolutely does not need progression raiding.
totally agree with this. Scaleable solo-friendly TFs would allow people likeme to enjoy the narrative at our own pace.

  11. 50 en/en flying blaster sent all the tuatha i to middle on patrol, then ignored them and did the 3 obelisks, then started with my usual melee zerg, got her to half then realisrd something was looling disgy so flew up high, hit my 'extend range' buff (cN never remember what it's called) and whittled the rest of her HP down while she spasmodically ran back and forth under me.

It didn't strike me as a memorable fight, but the melee accounts in this thread make me appreciate the tactics required and presumably considered by the devs. Nice we've got some 'think about it' mobs to figh.

Oh, and Happy Crimbo, everyone! You all rock.

Some people are in a hurry to collect a large number of candy canes, and taking time to clean up the spawns adds up, in addition to all that travel time. Minimizing the grind is perfectly understandable.

It doesn't bother me at all if people leave the snowmen behind. I think it adds flavor for the Winter Event.

I too don't mind when people leave the spawns alone.

  13. My Stalker managed to do the Honoree mission without any overly serious problems. I say overly because I did suffer two defeats during it, once right at my first attempt at ASing the first Rikti portal and then another time during the fight with a pulled Honoree.

But with a few inspirations it wasn't by any means impossible.

  14. Reporting in on my nin/nin/soul mastery Stalker's progress vs Trapdoor. She has only lvl 45 generic IOs, and she's set for -1 x0. Trapdoor conned as a yellow EB. I Hid, ignored everything, walked up to him and activated all my buffs, then led with an AS which did about a third of his HP. He bifurcated a blue-conning clone who went down in one hit, In wentr back to Trapdoor and wailed on him some more. He bifurcated again, I did that one in two. Back to Trapdoor and I remembered my Widow pet, so I got her out. He bifurcated again, I dealt with that, back to Trapdoor and he caved in and surrendered.

The most difficult part was finding the bifurcations, tbh. I didn't bother pulling him into the lava, he ran around a little bit but it was really rather easy all told. I'm not even sure that my Widow was all that necessary. In addition, it's been AGES since I've played my Stalker, so I can't remember what my powers do in terms of -def or what the various buffs do. I just activated everything that I could before the fight, and then spammed every attack power that was charged during it.

It'll be interesting to see how the Honoree fight goes, however, lol.

    Cheers for that, Mr Miyagi.

By that wisdom, they could make his mission as difficult as the STF, and it'd be ok, eh? Just /shrug and get a few friends.

  16. So that's what he's doing. The only times I've ever managed to get on one of those, it's been on a PuG, and I've yet to find one for a TF that isn't intent on doing it as fast as possible. God forbid anyone would want to read anything these days, it seems.

I haven't even seen half the rooms in whichever TF it is that ends up in a giant laundry room with Nemesis and Lord Recluse and Lady Crey etc having a bubble party with some big vampire guy.

If so, maybe you should file a petition on the subect of not being able to successfully file a petition that they can read.

  18. I emailed a full set of apocs to a friend two weeks ago. They didn't arrive. I petitioned with the nane of the sending toon and the name of the receiving toon and the server concerned and the time of another email i sent a little beforethat did get through, and yesterday the full set was transferred to one of my toons. The entire process was characterized by speed, care and politeness onthe part of the support team.

I did post all replies in between the correct lines. They received all my emails.

If you're going to accuse people of flunking English, you should surely ensure no spelling mistakes in your post

For what it's worth, I had no difficulty seeing what was meant. Slavishly adhering to the exact meaning of each word without intuiting the (in rhis case fairly obvious IMO) intended point is failing at English comprehension IMO.

  25. I don't know if this has any bearing on the 'solo vs teaming' playstyles debate, but I responded to an NCSoft Customer Support survey this morning. I've done this a few times, but this was the first time I noticed a section that asked me to 'choose the option that best describes your preferred playstyle', and the three options were 'I solo all the time/keep to myself', 'I team with others, but not regularly', and 'I regularly team or play with a group'.

That says to me that the devs are totally accepting of solo players, and may even be a sign of data-collecting with a view to increading the amount of soloable content. Since only one of those options is actually describing a team-centric style of plY, it could be argued that teaming is a minority behaviour in CoH.

When people drag out the 'the second M in MMO means MULTIPlayer!' refrain, I think maybe they're either missing the point or living in the past. Even WoW has alteted to reduce the teaming necessary for its endgame raids over the years. First you needed 50-odd players, then 25-man dungeons were implemented (very successfully) and now 10-man raids, so I hear.

If the LRSF becomes soloable due to difficulty slider expansion, the sky will not fall down. People will still team for it. And you'll also get more people doing it that otherwise wouldn't, for many reasons.

I'm a 6.5 yr vet. I haven't finished an LGTF or seen much of the Khan or STF when I did them because the other team members wanted to speed run them.

That's not my fault. That's nobody's fault. It's the way the game is at present. But I live in hope that one day I'll be able to enjoy those TFs my way, without pissing off the team-players out there.
