Grow a thicker skin. And just grow up. I gave a direct response to "the subject," and this little tantrum of yours is how you replied. So if anyone's "being" one (by the way, altering words to get around the filter = against message board rules) it's not me.

In a purely text based medium, presentation is important. To be honest, it's important anywhere, but moreso when all you have to work with is text. If you don't want people to take you or your ideas seriously, continue on the way you are. Add the same attitude and you'll have fewer people reading anything you say.

If you want to look foolish, keep on as you are. You're doing a great job. The first, second, and third impressions you're making are SURE to help anyone take you more seriously than a five year old.

If you want to give the impression that you actually care about the idea and are the least bit serious about it, put some thought and work into both the presentation and content of your posts. This isn't "texting," you don't get charged per letter as some places used to do (part of the reason for the ridiculous "b4 u" nonsense.) Nor is there a low character limit to posts. There's no reason to mangle your own words here.

Take a little pride in your idea and in yourself. Type things out, try for correct spelling and grammar, and try to actually take criticism as just that - criticism, not a personal attack. Your idea is not a unique snowflake. If it were, it wouldn't have gotten a cut and paste reply.

Good luck in your future attempts.

How about you actually read what I posted, and realize it's posted because this gets brought up quite a bit.

And, to use your own words, but with corrected and complete spelling and more courtesy, "think about things before getting upset about someone's disagreement and posted reasons."
  4. Vehicles as travel powers. This gets brought up a lot.

    First, a tip on searching.
    1. Click on "Search" up at the top of the forum.
    2. On the left, under "Forum(s) to search," select "Suggestions and ideas."
    3. On the right, Keyword Search Terms. This is probably where your problem was if you did search. Try the following, exactly as typed:

    +vehicle -"re: "

This will search for anything with the string "vehicle" in the title. The -re: portion of it removes replies, so you'll see the root of every thread that comes up, letting you see just how many threads there are on this. (The last helps for other subjects, as well.)

Be sure to put the space between the colon and last quote.

    4. Click the "In subject" radio button. This is a search, not a cute blonde in a bikini. Here, you want to ignore the body.

    5. Leave Username Search blank.

    6. Date range, Newer Than, change the 1 to a 3, and the time to Months.

    7. Result format doesn't matter. Click on "Submit."

Now, on to the topic at hand....

    Short answer, don't expect it.

    Long answer:
There are a lot of problems with the idea.

    1. Movement.
Forward and back, even turning - ok. But you can do things that a vehicle can't - such as strafe (direct side to side or angular movement.) It doesn't work with a vehicle.

    2. Terrain.
Not every place has roads, or even makes sense for "off roading." Go look at Founder's Falls. Go look at Crey's Folley. Or Eden. Try to get to the north islands in Talos. What, do you have a kubelwagen? Look at the Pit in Sharkshead. Try to use your travel power (car) to get up to some of the doorways in high caves. Cars and motorcycles would be more like Superspeed - horizontal movement, period. And look - I'll be blunt - flat out *stupid* tied with, say, Combat Jumping or Superjump.

    3. Combat.
You get ambushed on the way. How do you fight? Just have your powers blast out of the rolled up windows? How do you buff or debuff? EVERY power would need a new animation. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Then you want people with motorcycles instead of cars. Redo ALL the animations AGAIN. And they still wouldn't make sense - how do you use Footstomp in a car? Or Stalagmites?

    4. Customizing.
Yeah, it would come up. Not everyone would want a sports car, or a mid-70s Buick boat, or an exotic, or a minivan, or whatever else.

    5. Making "sense."
This was touched on in terrain - how do you get across water? How about the Shadow Shard? And if you want downright ridiculous looking, go do the heroside 25-34 Respec. Look at the Sky Skiffs inside of rooms or the reactor room. It makes no sense and looks *ridiculous.* Something that, yes, the devs try to avoid.

That's just a quick overview of some of the issues with having vehicles as a travel power.
  5. No... and I think I have a cut and paste reply for it, too.

Let me see... *rummages through chest* Old sandwich... gym socks... dead moth... What's Jimmy Hoffa doing in here? ... ahh, here we go. Yours is a slight variation on this, with a few problems of its own, but we'll start with this.

Welcome to the forum. You have posted one of the oft repeated suggestions, "Give us a full respec."

    First, NO.
    Second, a tip on searching.
    1. Click on "Search" up at the top of the forum.
    2. On the left, under "Forum(s) to search," select "Suggestions and ideas."
    3. On the right, Keyword Search Terms. This is probably where your problem was if you did search. Try the following, exactly as typed:

    +respec -"re: "

This will search for anything with the string "Respec" in the title, including Full Respec, I don't get any respect, and Respec Trial. .The -re: portion of it removes replies, so you'll see the root of every thread that comes up, letting you see just how many threads there are on this.

Why a full respec is not a good idea for COH.

So, you've played your Apathy/Dual Wet Noodle Tank to 50 and decided you don't like him. You've come to the forums and said "Why not let me completely respec the character!"

Well, people consider a "full respec" to be different things. I'm going to cover a complete and total character respec. If some of them don't apply, well, this comes up enough for this to be a copy and paste reply.

There are four things that define your character:
    1. Archetype
    2. Origin
    3. Primary powerset
    4. Secondary powerset

When people talk about a full respec, they're either talking about the powersets or the whole enchilada.

A Respec is short for respecification - altering what your character can do. This can be through reordering the levels you took powers, reassigning slots, and/or changing power pools. You'll note that none of this touches on changing the four listed items. The reason being that if any of those change, it's not the same character. A respec is not recreation or reimagining. It's tweaking your character a bit.

Now, let's go through some of these "full respecs."

    Primary/Secondary

You're sure to hear this repeated a good bit - Just because you've played one set, doesn't mean you know how to play them all.

For instance, my namesake tank is a Fire/Superstrength tank. I know how he plays. The most similar powerset to him at the time of writing is Dark Armor. It's resistance based, it has no knockback protection, it has a damage aura, a self heal that does damage - it even has a self rez as its tier9.

They don't play anything alike. (I can say this, because I also have a version that's DA/SS.) Fire has no Psi protection. It has no stealth. Burn has a far different effect than Oppressive Gloom, and nothing similar to Cloak of Fear. It calls for a thoroughly different style of play. With Fire, I can leave my toggles on and go to town. With Dark Armor, I have to be selective, or the times I have to herd stragglers (for instance) won't work exceptionally well. Dark Armor also does not have anything like Consume to help out with Endurance - that's in Dark Melee.

With "similar" sets being that different - try Fire vs Stone. Or Invulnerability. You now have a set at or near 50 (when most people seem to mention wanting this - "I have a 50 that...") that you don't know how to slot effectively (which means you'll be doing *at least* one more respec) and don't know how to play effectively.

That's just changing *one* side of the equation. Now add in, say, going from Stone Melee to Dark Melee. Different effects, with *very* different affects on your survivability. And you won't know how to slot that, either, or how well they synergize.

Similarly, a Stormie plays vastly differently from an Empath, or a Dark, or a Rad. Earth Control is nothing like Illusion. Combo-chasing with Dual Blades won't help you with Martial Arts.

How do I know that this ends up being a mess?

Beta testing. The devs have, on rare occasion, bumped up characters to specific levels. The most notable was when Recluse's Victory came out for testing. Everyone was made level 40 - and it was a *mess.* Sure, people made copies of their own characters, and those worked out. Then there were those (many, many of those) who said "Hey, I've never had a X/Y before, I'll make one of those!"

Like I said, it was a mess. You could very easily tell who had done that versus making copies of characters they knew.

Now, yes, over time you'll learn your powerset - but in the meantime, you're not going to be very effective, or very happy.

    Archetype

Now, given what I just said about powersets, imagine a *whole different AT.* Your tank is now an Empath? Really? You know how to survive as a Blaster because you played a Scrapper? And don't even get me started on epics.

If *sets* are that different, Archetype is that times ten.

    Impact on enhancements

IOs are a big part of the game right now. Think about IO'ing out your character. You get your KB protection, sets and the like, potentially spending millions (or more) on finishing up these sets, or working on merits or whatnot.

Now, you change your primary - again, we'll take a tank - from a resistance based one to a defense based one.

Guess what is now useless to you. You *may* have a power to stick that resist set in, somewhere, but now you're defense based - and those resist sets dont' work for you any more. That Knockback set isn't taken any more. It's even worse when you say you want to switch AT - what is a Blaster going to do with a resist set? What is a Scrapper going to do with Sting of the Manticore or Malaise's Illusions?

This isn't even touching on the fact that *you could only retain ten enhancements.* That's 1 2/3 six-slotted powers.

And you'd have nobody to blame for all that lost time and INF but yourself...

    Origin

Origin holds a strange place in this list. I'm just going to touch on it briefly.

Origin used to matter *vastly,* back in pre-beta. It determined how many powers you could learn and how skilled you could get with them. The system was scrapped, and for a long time it was mostly an RP item, as well as determining which enhancements you could use.

It now has *some* impact in the game with some temp powers - the "helper" power you get at level 1 (throwing knives, taser, mutagen, etc.) as well as some of the vet powers. The main impact, though, would be if you'd equipped with DOs or SOs, with the lost INF. That said, you would be able to get some of it back. Origin's probably the least of the problems with a full respec. Though some would, of course, complain that they no longer get a damage bonus or what have you - and who knows what the devs may do with this in the future.

    Gameplay

There are also two other things to consider.

    1. The game is designed around alts.

Seriously. If this were Guild Wars, for instance, with severely limited slots, I could see wanting to do a complete respec. But by default, you can make over 100 characters before feeling a pinch - and can purchase up to 24 additional slots per server, if you so choose. Don't like one set, make some others and try them out.

    2. It's just not that hard to level.

Seriously... it's not. With half debt inside missions, patrol XP, double XP weekends, XP smoothing, XP adjustments (typically up,) debt reduction everywhere... it just *isnt'* hard to level. And levelling "honestly" means you're learning your powersets, how they work with each other and others and hopefully how to use them best - which will only make you a stronger player.

In closing, let me just say "No. Roll an alt."

  8. Badges "for the sake of badges," no.

Badges that work accolade-style so the SG has something to work toward, yes.
  9. Memphis_Bill

    Maintenance.

    [ QUOTE ]

Thats why I put forward an alternative suggestion rather than complain. Do you think staggering extra maintanances could work?

    [/ QUOTE ]

It depends on the reason (and mechanics) for the maintenance. Patch? I'd rather have all the servers be the same. If it's something that isn't affecting play directly (say, hardware replacement/update,) where everything will be running the same version anyway but the required time to do whatever will be long, staggering is fine.
  10. Depends on what you consider "use," I suppose.

I actually do use it with some regularity - when I need more length and permanence than a tell. And I see it in supergroups as well - where the members may not *be* emailing it back and forth, but the leaders will send an email with things like the SG's website, rules, any prerequisites (IE, specialized builds) and the like, or if they have to kick someone for inactivity or whatnot. That, to me, is fairly common.
  11. Memphis_Bill

    Ingame e-mail

... so why can't they email you out of game? I can't think of a time I've wanted someone outside the game emailing me inside it.

Honestly, the biggest reason against this that I can see is that it'd bypass all the spam efforts the devs have put in already. No reason to make it easier for the G-based RMTers... or any/every other company that gets ahold of the list.

A filter based on keywords could be wiggled around by spaces inside the words, splitting them, or as they've been doing, by mispelling.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not if that filter is Bayesian. A Bayesian filter looks at words, words in proximity to other words, words in relation to other words, etc. It looks at the "language" of spam, not just the individual letters that compose it, and it uses that "language", the composition of advertisements designed to catch the eye and convince the reader to buy, to catch and remove the spam. It's highly effective when it's properly implemented, generally at or above 99% effectiveness, and with false positive counts below 1%.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    That sounds rather clever.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The question is, do we want to pay the cost (processing wise, not to mention trying to fit that into the email system) of that while simultaneously doing all an MMO does?

I'm still more in favor of clientside filters in a situation like this.

Common topic : Email changes in response to RMT Spam

There are quite a few ideas floated typically for dealing with RMT spam. Trial account limitations were one thing tried by the devs, and worked reasonably well until lately (early 2009.) This is a common topic in the suggestion forum.

Since it is, a tip on searching.
    1. Click on "Search" up at the top of the forum.
    2. On the left, under "Forum(s) to search," select "Suggestions and ideas."
    3. On the right, Keyword Search Terms. This is probably where your problem was if you did search. Try the following, exactly as typed:

    +mail -"re: "

This will search for anything with "mail" in the title. Why not "email?" Because not everybody spells it the same. Some will call it email, others "e-mail" or "e mail," and still others may just call it the "mail system" or "Filters on Mail." This gives you a better chance of catching all of those. The -re: portion of it removes replies, so you'll see the root of every thread that comes up, letting you see just how many threads there are on this. (The last helps for other subjects, as well.)

    4. Click the "In subject and body" radio button. Normally I say just in the subject, but this comes up in a few different ways, so for this search - both.

    5. Leave Username Search blank.

    6. Date range, Newer Than, change the 1 to a 3, and the time to Months.

    7. Result format doesn't matter. Click on "Submit."

What do we see with this result? There are 34 returned threads as I type this (3/23/09.) My first page? Here's part of it.

Give me an option to block emails, Im sick of spam
    Change email to mail system
    We need another ignore list
    Lock out e-mail until 15
Be able to disable or restrict e-mail
Maybe the worst idea ever, or maybe not.
    Tired of RMT Emails?
    Shared storage slots
    Email link not turning red
    In-game E-mail spamming

Going to just one month would have cut it down to just 13 results, in this case. Three months, though, is a decent search range. You can see already the reason for putting in "Mail" instead of "Email." And those without it in the title have it in the body somewhere.

    Personal Opinion

I am, as always, strongly in favor of client-side filtering. Something like:
    Accept email from:
    o Friends
    o Global Friends
    0 Supergroup
    o Teammates
    0 Coalition
    0 Any

with "Any," honestly, being the default - I use the system and help people I run across in PVP zones, for instance.

Why not keyword filtering (blacklisting?) Well, say I'm spamming from a (as far as I know) made up site called infspammer .com. I can tell you right now, just from *regular* email experience, that the second you block the entire name, it's going to get changed. www. infspammer. com is not the same. Block infspammer? 1nfspammer. i n f s pa a m m e r. in fs pa mm er. 1nfsp@mmer. 1nfsp@/|/| /|/|er. And if you finally manage to blow all that time and money setting up and testing the blocks for all the permutations of that - I spend five bucks and get buymyinf.com, and you get to start all over again. A blacklist is just more work for less gain. After all, years after the huge push from overseas, I still get the occasional creative spelling of "viagra" showing up in my own (whitelisted) junk mail filter.

That said, I'm also strongly leaning towards totally disabling email on trial accounts by this point. Yes, it's another trial limitation... but the RMTers are getting around it by PL'ing up characters already. As much as I *dislike* the idea, I can't help but think that it'd be needed at this point.

Count me among the minority who hates I14 and the MA and have cancelled 2 subs over it. I'm sure you'll have no trouble replacing my 2 accounts, but it's clear the devs didn't put enough (any?) thought into how this would affect player populations in the zones.

If your goal was to turn all the zones into the equivalent of the Abandoned Sewer Network after nerfing the Kraken Trial: congratulations! The MA has been a huge success!

If your goal was to turn every zone into a "PL meh!" zone: congratulations! The MA has been a huge success!

All you've done is succeed in creating an "all-farm all the time" game in every zone. Again, if this was your goal, you succeeded beyond your wildest dreams!

But in the meantime, I'll take my entertainment dollars elsewhere. I14 is a waste of my money.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Really?

Funny how my experience doesn't match that at all.

Let me guess. You played on Freedom and can't see past Broadcast.
  15. I *think* "Baseball gear" (at least as far as regular player, not catcher gear) can be gotten somewhat in game right now, but additional patterns wouldn't hurt. Or just giving it a dedicated "costume set."

*looks* Eh, ok, it could be better than this, definitely. ("Louisville Slaughter," one of my brutes.)
  16. Something similar to this?

Worked at a place that used them for VPN. You had a PIN, combined it with the number on the ID, which changed every minute. Great, until they got locked out.

Personally, I'd see it as being too expensive and too much hassle. Especially when they *inevitably* get lost or broken - and the person realizes they have to pay another $50 or whatever for one. (Yes, they tend to have high replacement fees.)
  17. [ QUOTE ]
Why not just use the word Deity instead? It works just the same and isn't censored.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It may *mean* the same thing, but no, it doesn't have the same effect. It's more clinical, and - odd as this may sound - the way the word "Deity" and "God" come off the tongue, the rhythm breaks certain flows and the overall effect.

    Go back to, oh, Ghostbusters.

    "Are you a god?"
"Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say yes!"

"Deity" is far more cumbersome, and doesn't have the same effect. Now, if we were talking about a lecture about mythologies, there's less worry *about* effect - again, it's clinical.

There's a weight behind the world god, even when not used in the judeo-christian sense. And, just like shades of color, or volume and tone of instrument in music, they are chosen for specific purposes.

For instance, if I'm writing a Banished Pantheon arc, I could have Dr. Sands, an NPC, expounding over the deities that make up the pantheon, of which little is known save for archaic writings before the post-Rikti War era. Now, he could say the "gods" of the Pantheon, but there, it's certainly interchangeable. It's being delivered in a tone and with about as much weight as the reading of a telephone book.

Now you have the shaman preparing a trap in which you'll be sacrificed - as he sees you, he yells that "You shall die so my god shall live!" "Deity" just doesn't work there. In a strict sense, yes, they *mean* the same thing, but the emotional weight is missing with "Deity." You've taken the string section out of the orchestra by telling me I can't use "god" in that case. Yes, woodwinds or horns can play the same notes, but they don't give the same effect.

If "blasphemy" (as someone said earlier) is a worry, then block the accepted 'names' - and make sure to include those of other religions, as well. But a three letter word describing a religious or mythological concept (or being/s depending on your belief) - that should, IMHO, be allowed.
  18. Honestly, I think that'd get *really* irritating after a while. The combat auras we have now are very small, localized items. Others like that would be useful, sure.

But having rocks suddenly start crumbling off of you, your body bursting into flame, etc. on-off-on-off several times a mission... gah.

Not being able to use the word "god" in reference to these limits our ability to write stories that tie into the CoH storyline.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Too bad?

You do not have the right to offend those who believe that using the word in this situation is blasphemy any more that you have the right to yell "fire" in a crowded theater.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If I'm talking about Zeus, and mention that he's a god of the Greek pantheon, the same god known as Jupiter to the Romans, descended through various twists and turns from a weather god in the Slavic or Russian steppes, the same phenomena that have inspired the creation of other gods in other mythologies...

Have I just blasphemed *anything* four times? No. I have used a reference to a mythological construct known as a deity or a god. (Look, I said it again.) What if I talk about El? Guess what. I've just used a very old name of *one* of the gods that over the millenia has been combined into the Judeo-Christian deity. Have I blasphemed anything? Yet I can't write that in game. I can't mention that, in *game canon,* the BP are trying to wake a god that's sleeping under Moth Cemetery.

God is a label. God is a "rank," of sorts. Capitalized, it's showing nothing more in the last two uses than that it's the beginning of a sentence. Censoring it is silly and, yes, restrictive in a game that features multiple gods (look, I said it again!) - including an attempt to bind a god (again!,) wake a sleeping god (oooh!) and devour a god or three (get the stones!) It's as silly as censoring the word "Body." "If he's dead, find the [censored] bag they put him in." "We ran across the suspect's library. He's written quite a [censored] of work." "The letter was a mess. The greeting was fine, but the [censored] was a mass of paranoid delusional rantings." Think that might be restrictive?

Why should those who believe that using that three letter word is "blasphemy" in any context (as none of the examples, even though they're perfectly legitimate, take anything "in vain") have so much say in this non-religious, international context?

Calash's examples, given that's who you were showing as replying to, as well as quoting, were roughly as blasphemous, insulting or offensive as the word "Cheese."

    Name: Hunting the Hunters
    Arc ID: 16531
    Length: Medium
    Missions: 2
    Genre: Horror - Vampire
    Morality: Villainous

Description: Young vampires have been going missing from Bardovia and no one knows what their fate might be. You have been asked to investigate these disappearances and get to the bottom of who is hunting the undead.

I created this mission for my Villain Group on Freedom. We're a role playing SG with a dark fantasy / horror theme. This first story arc introduces a custom enemy group known as The Slayers, who are the focus of the second story arc I did. I used the Luddites as the introductory antagonists in the story, which unfortunately sets the mission level between 8 and 20. You really have to read the clues and pay attention to the details of the objects and NPCs you're interacting with to get the full story of what's going on in the first story arc.

I'd really like to combine Part 1 and Part 2 into one big story arc with 5 missions but the file size is too big. I'm also worried it might make it too long and people might loose interest.

I'm all about the story, so I'm really eager to see what people think. Please let me know.

The "8-20" actually got me to wander in to try this, specifically with one of my warshades who's just 21.

Stuff to track down to fix (AKA Ye Olde Typo List: )

Intro - typo - due to report, not due too.
First mission intro: Definitely, not definately.
Second mission intro: Staging, not stagging.
Second mission return (success) dialog: emissary

You mention you wrote this for an RP group. You may want to mention that inside the description as well, given some of the dialog. Are you supposed to be RPing as another vampire? I'm assuming the answer is yes, given the clue when you find Ludwig in the first mission.

Return to Contact dialog... first mission... is somewhat... overdone... on the ellipses...

Second mission intro: The wording at the last is a bit awkward. I'd change it from:

"Remember: the luddites have already attacked you once for aiding us and this is a chance to (etc) to something like:

Remember, the Luddites will not hesitate to attack you. Aiding us will not only increase our good will towards you, but give you a chance to punish them for their transgressions." (Alternately, punish their audacity or a similar phrase.) It was odd enough that it stood out, at least for me.

None of that is a major issue to playability, and a 21 Warshade didn't feel over (or under)powered. It felt solid, but too short, and that's the biggest disappointment I ran across. I'd see about figuring out what you can do to combine the two. Do the bosses (such as the liaison from the last mission) all share similar powers and looks? If so, use just one copy and rename them - this will save on the file size.

    My arc:
    Tsoo Faced
    #1120
    Very long - Heroic
    5 missions
Synopsis: The Tsoo begin an uncharacteristic rash of break ins across the city. They're obviously looking for something. What it is may come as a surprise - even to them.
