Before you say anything, yes, I have seen this:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=273697
It does not work on a Mac because the settings do no contain language options. You can change the region between Europe and North America but not the language - it seems to be nailed to the system language. -
Hello,
can anyone tell me how I change the language settings on a Mac? When the game installed it automatically assumed German settings without asking me and I cannot find a way to change that.
I usually play on Union server and I really need to see the English descriptions of the powers and mission names. Firstly because I am used to it and secondly because I can't communicate with the community at all otherwise.
My best guess so far is the file
/Applications/City of Heroes.app/Contents/Resources/Preferences/user.reg
which seems to contain registry key which would be in the Windows registry if I was using windows. There is one key
"Installer Language"="1033"
in the [Software\\Cryptic\\COH] section, but I don't know what to set it to. -
There is a way to do that on a Mac as well:
Code:However the game loads without my usual settings (hope they aren't deleted, but I probably can restore them from the hourly backups my Mac creates if they are deleted) and when I log in I don't see the normal servers, particularly not Union, my server, but only a stronge number coded server.../Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cityofheroes.exe -project oh
EDIT: The server I see is not number coded but called "UNNAMED" and if I try to log in to it it says "Can't connect to DBServer" -
There is no server status for the European servers and there is no such button in (mac OS X) updater. Could anyone answer my question, please?
-
my "City of Heroes-Updater" is currently trying forsakenly to build up a connection. It's currently at attempt #8. So, since I didn't change anything and it worked fine until yesterday I wonder: Are there any servers offline? Especially the "European" servers?
-
First of all, the installer worked for a couple of times now. I managed to install the game completely, log in, set the screen resolution to 2560x1440 and the graphics slider to Ultra (hoping that it would realize that it must not use anti-aliasing at that resolution). And when I started the game again I had the same trouble as before. The updater would not connect but keep trying forever.
In my router I have set my iMac as "Exposed Host", meaning all ports that are not otherwise used are routed through to it. However that shouldn't change much, since some of the UDP ports (7077 - 7200) are already in use for the VoIP connection to my telephone provider. The game can have 7000 - 7076 however.
I managed to install the game under Windows 7 under boot camp at first. I avoid Windows 7 though since the most recent driver sets the monitor to 16bit color resolution mode when you say 32 bit vice versa. From screen shots I know that the graphics card actually computes 32 bit colors, it just doesn't display them. When you downgrade the display driver (the monitor itsself does not have a driver) the display driver crashes in intervals of around 10 seconds.
The installation under Windows worked fine at first, but when I started the game I had sever graphics issues. Which is strange since I have none with any other game installed, other than the restriction to 65k Colors of the builtin monitor. The login screen would flicker and twitch, the screen overlapping with old screens when you progress to the menu. I tried to reach the options somehow and select a native screen resolution for my monitor (2560x1440) but the image was so distorted that I didn't make it so far.
So I logged out to whether I could set a proper resolution before I actually start the game. That was when the Windows Updater would simply fail to start up as well. It would show up in process list but not appear on screen. In the netlog file stood billions of entries like "server disconnected an ongoing connection" or something like this. That was when I set my computer to "exposed host" mode in the router settings.
I've deleted the Windows Game and tryed to reinstall it, but the installer won't open anymore.
Your description above showed some effect - in the last few attempts the default news site didn't open in the Mac OS X updater and after I wiped the cache in Safari it did show it. However, it still doesn't log in anymore, and I remember it did not even show the web page on one of three attempts that did work.
I have contacted the support before I wrote here. The GM obviously failed to realize that I was using a Mac OS X and not Windows and gave a generic reply to check whether I have the European client, and not the US client installed. But the Updater IS the EU version, so that didn't help. I don't really expect the support to be able to help me.
Given the nature of the problem - and experiences with City of Heroes in the past - I must at least consider the possibility that there is some routing problem in my ISPs net and the transition to whatever net City of Heroes is hosted in and it just won't work...
I tryed loads of different games and none made any problem so far: Warhammer Online under both Windows and Mac OS X, Dragon Age: Origins (that's single player, but you gotta log in online to play) und Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 und Mac OS X. Also under Windows Lord of the Rings Online, Champions Online, Age of Conan... no problems whatsoever so far -
Well, I know the port s the game needs actually. And did all that before I posted... as is written in my post. However, I am so far now as to know that under Windows the client does install, so it isn't really a port problem. It must be something else.
What confuses me a little is that program call with the port passed. I can't start an .exe file directly in Mac OS X, because it wouldn't understand the system calls. Let alone DirectX calls. Something such as a path starting with C: doesn't exist on a Mac, the updater is located under:
/Applications/City of Heroes.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/coh/CohUpdater.EU.exe
Secondly does it use that port for both TCP and UDP in both directions then and none else?
However, any helpful ideas how to fix this would be welcome. Maybe the program must be run as root somehow? How would I enforce this? -
Hello, can anyone tell me why my client won't update? I dragged the City of Heroes program into my Applications folder, started it and all it does is showing
Verbindung wird hergestellt ... #100
(meaning "connecting")
It did not download a single byte of the actual game yet.
I did what I could to configure the route the required ports through, though I could only give the game UDP port 7000-7086. Beyond that the ports are for my phone (I got a connection over the Internet). The TCP ports were no problem.
I have no firewall or anything installed on my iMac. Still it just won't connect. :/ -
That depends... One question: Suppose you have a character "Killa" that appears in several, already published arcs of yours. Would that change the instances of "Killa" in the already published arcs?
-
Well thanks for the help. I completely missed that you can format text by right clicking into the fields.

I want the player character to summon the enemy boss in the last mission of the small arc. Is there a way to let a boss (or an Arch Villain in this case) appear after the player has interacted with an item? I could make an ambush but an ambush cannot contain a specific enemy, can it?
[/ QUOTE ]
First of all create both the glowie and the boss and fill in all the details. Now on the boss, at the top option (iirc) it has the option "this objective appears when . . ", simply open that dropdown box and select your glowieNow when the player clicks the glowie, your boss will spawn.
[/ QUOTE ]
Wouldn't that mean that only the mission text is upgraded after the item has been interacted with, but the boss is there before and might be fought against before you interact with the item? And... what would happen if things were completed in the wrong order..? -
Hi, I'm on my first attempts with Mission Architect and I got a few questions:
<ul type="square">[*]I want the player character to summon the enemy boss in the last mission of the small arc. Hello,
I am trying to play a warshade, but I do still have serious problems with the human form - which is the only actual true shape - the shape I created in my eyes. Novas and dwarves are anonymous, it might be nice to switch to them briefly, but it's not something I'd consider playing for extend periods of time.
Now, the impression I got so far is that the human shape has about the firepower of a defender (actually a little more raw firepower but no snipe so far and generally less range), the defense of a stalker (a little more hitpoints and a little less efficient defenses), hardly and support or crowd control at all - she can only heal herself and teleport allies for support and she can immobilize a single target for crowd control; that's it.
Still, I have more serious endurance problems than with any other character I had before. Despite having stamina now a fight against 3 even level minions leaches me dry. That's quite serious - even the best set in the world's useless if you don't have the endurance to trigger the powers.
I do have the nova shape and while I added two slots to the shape itsself the nova powers do not have any but the original one slot. The nova shape is slotted with two accuracy buff enhancement and one fly, the powers are all slotted with one accuracy enhancement. The same DOs as any other. And while the nova has far less slots than the human form it is superior to it in any situation, except fighting ghosts the undead slaying axe works against. And even that is not due to Warshade abilities, but because of the veteran reward power. The nova has - despite the lack of damage enhancements - far greater firepower, more area attacks, more range and it can fly. It has two knockbacks as the human shape has, but they reload faster. The range and the ability to fly more than make up for the weaker defenses, so, unless I am fighting ghosts ... what's there to make a human for worthwhile? Maybe the interesting powers come on higher level? Or is that you simply gotta wait for IO sets to at least get endurance problems sorted and then see how it goes?
PS: The current level is 21 -
Canceled due to lack of interest both here an in my SG.

Hello,
everyone interested in doing the Cavern of Transcendence Trial, please give a quick reply. It doesn't take too much time - from what I can see you're limited to 90 minutes anyway. Level range is 12 - 15, therefore any character from level 14 to 50 is welcome.
In game contacts are "Purplewind" for mails and "@Marksmaid" for tells.
Keep up hurting people for the good cause, heroes!
The mythic
Marksmaid
PS: Particularly welcome would be a character with both some kind of stealth and the ability to teleport other. Let me know if you can do this. -
he. First thing I would think of for a journalist is a mind controller. Especially if it's a popular one.
The best solo at is imho mastermind. Plus they're the least "super-" type on their own. Thus a thugs mastermind is always an option for something like that. -
He. Thanks for your advice. Based on this I won't change much though. Yes, I do agree that Tar Patch and Darkest Night and Fearsome Stare could need another enhancement. But they're still useful the way they are, especially considering the Recharge Reduction from Hasten and possible set boni. They'll get their slot in time.
I might take the defense slot from Shadow Fall away. But I do think it's actually not wasted on Shadow Fall. Effectively a level 35 add less than 1% to the defense, true. But we're talking about area defense for the whole group against everything here. Its not worth much alone but it adds to boni from other sources. And especially psionics boni are valuable.
But you're probably right in so far as it would be more practical to have a third to-hit debuff in Darkest Night to start with instead. 3.75% defense on everything is good, spending a slot for 0.8% more is a luxory I probably cannot effort.
On the long run I will of course replace all slots with sets. That it will be important how many slots you have in a power to get to the more rare set boni in the deepest pits of the set. I fare quite well with that on my blaster. Besides the fact that it just feels good having devestation and Sting of the Manticore full, most of Positrons Blast etc. etc. So - that's another reason for the two accuracy enhancements in all the attack powers - keeping the slots reserved(well, one could argue that in this setup I'd better use Endurance Reduction" to keep slots reserved, or slot 3 damage right away.)
-
hmm... I've tried to put everything into account everything you said. About the accuracy - the advantages in other fields were enormous if I'd use just one per attack power, but I really prefer to have some more reliability within my attacks, making the results of once actions a bit more predictable.
[ QUOTE ]
(either IO's, or better than even level SO's),
[/ QUOTE ]
How do you mean that? Level 35 IOs are better than even level SOs (... they're more expensive, but since they're better you may safely keep them until level 50, so it's gonna be cheaper on the long run. And you have one less aspect to worry about. With time and influence you may replace them with SIOs, but you're not under pressure regarding that.
As suggested I've taken the tactics stuff again out and hasten back in. The winner for the power that became available this way is dark blast. In fact I had already considered to replace gloom completely by dark blast, but as an offensive char it is reasonable to take all straightforward damage dealing powers of a given set.
As for the slots there is indeed a problem: There is a lot powers yet that need more. On level 36 and 37 I'll get six more slots I can use to give another damage to Blackstar, Dark Blast, Tenebrous Tentacles and Moonbeam. Twilight Grasp is gonna get a third heal. The last slot I will probably assign as a third recharge reduction to tar patch, though I am also considering a second defense in Shadow Fall or a second accuracy in Fearsome Stare.
The slot I am least sure of at the moment is the second accuracy in Moonbeam - as a snipe its accuracy is inheritly higher than that of other powers anyway... but if it wasn't it wasn't really a snipe anymore.
I've set acrobatics to level 35. Still enough to be available in Sirens Call and it wouldn't be available in Bloody Bay anyway. The extra slots in Super Jump I left out because now I have even more slot problems than in the last example.
The problem that remains is the missing endurance. I just don't know where I could take some from. I really need the recharge reductions in Night Fall and Tenebrous Tentactles, to balance out their recharge speed against Gloom and Dark Blast.
Oh, and thanks for your help and patience.

This build has some interesting ideas I hadn't thought of yet. But of course I cannot just use your build as though it was mine. I have never thought of using Hasten in this context - seems this build kind of depended on it, but that's one way to get the speed without billions of slots.
And I think I've found an a slight mistake you made (and I looked very, very hard to find one, got something to prove after all): I don't see any point in putting an endurance reduction into Fearsome Stare. Recharges every 24 with enhancements seconds and has an enurance cost of 8.53 without enhancement. You save about 2 endurance points every 24 seconds.
For comparison: Nightfall Recharges every 10 seconds and has an endurance cost of 13.1.
Here is what I've thought of in the meantime. Leaving Life Drain out, too and taking Fearsome Stare earlier, within the Bloody Bay range - up to level 25. On level 30 I took hurdle because I already had what I needed so far so I took a power that doesn't need extra slots to work.
Oh, about hasten: I don't know. In your build it is being displayed as available for 120 seconds and taking 230 seconds to reload. So it's available about half the time... not really something I'd wish to rely on...
I am a little concerned about the endurance balance of this build. With all the recharge reductions I better get sets that give serious endurance boni quickly. Super Jump has three slots mostly for a the Unbound Leap set - I am not sure wether it is enough but both Shadow Fall and Unbound Leap together could be enough to buy me some time in PvP. Then again it's the question if I wouldn't rather put it into combat jumping instead...
But the major question is: If you have four slots in a damage dealing power - are one accuracy and three damage really better than two of either?
PS: Now I got an idea: How about leaving Hurdle and Petrifying Gaze out and take Assault and Tactics instead? That would be even worse for my endurance balance but had definately have a noteable impact on my overall damage output. The fact that the final build will have two additional toggles doesn't make it better either. With the slots used as shown the tools says I had an endurance generation of 2.49 and a consumption of 1.24 with all nescesary toggles on on level 34.

Hello there,
after a lengthy discussion about corruptors I've decided to get my old corruptor from Zukunft to Union and sort her anew. The character hasn't been played for several months, so she doesn't have any invention stuff at all. Additional, due to infamy problems (she was an SG member character once) she has lots of empty slots and some outdated SOs. The build is old and it has some strange aspects to it, such as two additional slots in run...
All enhancements in the overview are SOs. The majority is green, one is grey and one just turned yellow.
Here is the character as she is at the moment: http://www.cohplanner.com/builds/7732
The order at which the slots where acquired is not the real one, but the order of the powers is more or less right. This character is already a result of a respec. The character is actually level 34, not 35 as the tool says.
The character is supposed to be - for a dark/dark corruptor - relatively self reliant and damage oriented in combat.
Following the discussion and my own experiences I tryed to begin a new draft. It does not have slots yet because I want to be sure about the powers before I start any wild assignments: http://www.cohplanner.com/load/7733
That the character uses leaping and not fly as a ranged combatant belongs to the character concept. Fly would just not fit, even though it might be some more efficient. Good about it is the easy access to acrobatics, which will probably help a lot. I don't know why I didn't use it in the original, I knew how helpful it can be then.
Describing the powers I chose is most easiest done with those I left out.
From dark blast:
<ul type="square">[*]Dark Blast - is a nice, quick damage dealing power, but other powers are simply more powerful. Typically the character will have a damage dealing power that deals more damage ready at any time. Especially know with all the Invention sets that give Recharge Reduction as set bonus.[*]Dark Pit - actually I like this power, too... a good way to not have to worry about all the minions anymore. But it'd need quite a few slots and is of limited use not working against bosses. So I'll have to try to get along without it for now.[*]Torrent - While a knockback is good to buy you some time, for casting a moonbeam for example, it's general function, crowd control should be covered by tar patch and tenebrous tentacles if used right. This will of course eleminate the possibility to get airbourne enemies down, too.
And from dark miasma:
<ul type="square">[*]Fearsome Stare - to be taken next level.[*]Black Hole - yet another power that could give you a breather I left out. Simply because this is supposed to be a build that makes the best of the damage dealing capabilities that are there. It's good to not have to think about one enemy for a time, but having them out of reach onceself is not so good. Of course this is a power that I am gonna miss, too. Dark Miasma has the problem that all its powers are good.[*]Dark Servant - Not accessible yet, overlaps with Ghost Widows Patron powers. (And as darrrrrk corruptor I just have to take Ghost Widow, though Scirocco is cool for magicians, too)
From fitness I left out hurdle - I thought I'd rather balance out my run speed than to amplify my jump capabilities even more. In PvP the opposite would probably more helpful, but the character gets some more convenient to handle this way.
From leaping I left out jump kick. It has some point to it, but I really prefer to powers from within the set since scourge wouldn't work on jump kick. And I am ranged anyway.
One major problem I have is that the character does not have much influence, so I will not be able to test the build but get the enhancements I need over the time. But it doesn't make much scence to remain on the current build and probably fill it with enhancements I might throw away later, so I will just have to make my decisions now and be patient with the results.
I would be glad for any advice regarding the powers to choose (the slots come later). -
Just wanted to let you guys know how great I find this wiki.
Spend more time toying with my own character page today than actually playing. If I overcome my inner swine now and actually design a storyline and pulling it through I could make perfect use of it. For now, toying with my character page is fun, too though.

It sure is gonna happen. Okies, see you, Skaa.
