Well, I'm gonna be the snarky one...
Oh, so today it's blasters that have the problem again?
Are you sure it isn't the tanks day (cause Brutes to it better)? Or Scrappers (cause brutes do it better)? Or Brutes (cause tanks or scrappers do it better)? Or Defenders (cause Corrs do it better)? Or Khelds (because everyone does it better)?
Oh, it is Blasters day? Yeah. They suck. Must be lame being about being able to softcap and push the highest pure DPS in the game..
OK. snark aside..
The problem is that the game is still, in some fictional alternate universe, based around SOs.. But a notable percentage of the games population don't rely on just SOs. And as long as comparisons are made between SOed alts, and IOed/Incarnated alts, you're going to have folks that feel seriously deficient, regardless of what alt you are playing.
And I don't know what the solution is to try and bridge that gap. I think upping the baseline performance may be part of the solution, but I think that should be done with extreme caution... -
While it seems I normally agree with ya, PrincessD, in this case, I just don't see it, and have to agree with Hope. Damage tends to come in spikes, and having an excellent burst of survivability is a phenomenal tool. People chase the Archmage/Demonic accolades for a reason. That burst of survivability is even better if it's crashless.
That said, on Hybrid as a whole, I think it's very much on par with the other Incarnate slots. I think the reason it may seem underwhelming is that it's our sixth one available. I mean, a well IOed incarnate only has so many holes to plug. If the incarnate abilities keep getting stronger, that's a huge problem if they are allowed to be used in regular lvl 50 content (well, maybe that genie may well already be out of the bottle, but ramping up in power isn't really a good thing regardless). If they don't get stronger, well, how much better than running on +4/x8 at breakneck full speed can you really get?
I think that if Hybrid came earlier, and say, Destiny came 6th, then we'd have folks complaining about Destiny being underwhelming. At least that's my take on the value of Hybrid.
So, given that...
Yeah, I can afford, as things now stand, to not obsess over getting Hybrid. I don't enjoy the iTrials overmuch, and when I do, I don't want to run one over and over. So I'll just do DA stuff, and the other 1/2 dozen iTrials and get the other 5 slots on my scads of incarnates and not worry about Hybrid until there are 2 or 3 other trials (or a solo path, even) that give Advanced Psychic Incarnate XP. So, Hybrid, isn't worth it to me because it doesn't fill a need that wasn't filled elsewhere, and is forcing me through a bottleneck I don't want (and don't need) to navigate. It *is* worthwhile, equally so to the others, but since I can't choose to get it earlier on some alts, and since it's the most limited path, and will always be last in sequence obtained among the slots we now have, I'm more than willing to just shelve it for now,and concentrate on getting the other 5 slots filled on a bunch of my other 50s that aren't all fully incarnated.
Obviously, if you're more hardcore a completionist than I, or are less alty than I, or if you enjoy the iTrials more than I, your mileage will vary a great deal, and that's OK.. To each their own... -
Indeed, awesome breakdown Sonic..
However...
Sorta surprised that for Beam you didn't mention the -res, too. It comes late on a def, true, but in a high recharge build (which is what ya get for most Emps) you could probably perma stack, or at least close to perma -40% res on a target, when needed.. -40% res isn't anything to sneeze at when added to all the other goodies. It's technically a cone, too, but in my experience, a second target getting hit isn't to be relied upon. -
A Storm/Fire can avoid having to take Gale. Sadly, a Fire/Storm can't. The corr prolly still wins out but I really dislike gale, so I felt it worth mentioning.
-
As to the first sentence. How did I know that odds were high that the very first reply would be a snarky one?
As to the second sentence, I've not seen any evidence of this. How can you tell? -
Do any optional objectives have any actual game affect? I can't tell but it seems like not, yet it seems odd to even list them as objectives if they don't do anything.
-
If you move the temp power to a new tray that will prolly also make the temp tray disappear. Haven't tested that theory, but I will when I get home.
-
What I'm frustrated about, with regard to this trial, is mostly the lack of options. When the iTrials first came out, the impression that was given was that over time we'd have an ever expanding pool of ways to advance through 'Incarnateness', for lack of a better work. And, while it was slow, it gradually did expand, and eventually we even saw a decent, if slow, solo/small team path.
All of that progression was a positive in my opinion. Now, suddenly, we take 5 steps back. There is only one option to progress again. There aren't even 2 or 3 iTrials to choose from, and certainly not even solo path. I see why they did it, they are hoping to force the players into trying they latest, but I don't think it's a good decision. They were finally to a point where you had some variety of options...
I wanted to check the Magisterium out, and see it to it's conclusion, but with the oods being high I'll end up in a farn, and the railroaded feeling I'm getting, I think I'll just give it a pass for now.. I've got plenty of 50s that still need all their t4s, and plenty of alts still on the path to 50 that I won't get bored if I wait till there are more options. -
Quote:So we go from Excalibur being a little knife on Ms. Liberty's belt to something almost taller than the wielder. Do not want Titan Weapon Excalibur.
I was thinking the same thing. That's funny. Or maybe sad.
That being said....
I'd go out of my way for a Broadsword Excalibur, but have no interest in a TW version. I'm happy for those that do, but it is not for me. -
I have Atomic Blast on my Rad/Rad. Grated, I rarely use it while solo, but teaming, it can really shift a bad situation to a win fairly dramatically.
Yes, all my toggles drop, but so to do most of the enemies. If there are still enemies about I eat a small blue or two, and just retoggle RI. After the -recovery portion goes away, I can worry about the rest of my toggle.
That said, it's very situational. I could easily lose it and not be too disappointed. So, if you wanted to swap AB for EM Pulse, that could work for some people and builds. If you don't that works, too. I'd say on that it's more a matter of what set bonuses you get out of it and just preference. -
Quote:Methinks you may be on to something here....I have doubts whoever designed it is a City of Heroes player. It looks more in line with trinity based MMOs where crowd control isn't supposed to matter. I fully expect that if I surf over to ***pedia I'll find some shadow priest or warlock spell that has a chance to charm a target for 2 seconds, and the *** community thinks it's balanced.
See also: Non-damage Interface procs.
That said, yes. Add my voice to the others. On a defender, almost totally worthless. Certainly not worth the pick. If you must take it, the ContConf proc is a must to make it even mildly effective. Very mildly. Other tricks can be added as others have said, like the Cog Interface, to make WoC better, but not enough better to be worth using the interface slot that way, etc. I've not tried it on a troller, but for a defender, I'd vote against it unless concept demanded it for some reason. -
Really, this sums it all up nicely, as far as I'm concerned, too. I might only add Sonic and maybe FF. As a solo defender, mez protection is very nice, and only Sonic, FF, and Traps provide much.
Quote:As far as Primaries, there are plenty to choose from that will work for a solo player:
Dark Miasma
Kinetics (a little squishier in the early levels)
Radiation Emission
Storm Summoning
Time Manipulation
Traps
Trick Arrow (also a little squishier, avoid bosses for awhile)
For secondaries:
Archery (with the hard-hitting Blazing Arrow at 10, and then Rain of Arrows at 32)
Dual Pistols (for survivability with the Toxic rounds)
Fire Blast (make sure to pick a tougher primary with this, Fire doesn't offer much to help you survive)
Ice Blast
Psychic Blast (no really, it's always been pretty good on Defenders)
Sonic Attacks (hurray -Resistance!) -
Quote:I get what you are saying. It seems you don't. You want to be able to get Aid Self, without having to take Aid Other or Stimulant. You don't mind taking boxing, so it's no big deal to you, and as much as you champion 'choice' you don't mean choice in the broad sense, you mean in the very specific sense as it applies to you. If you wan the option, it should be available. The game should be changed (ie the Medicine pool) because of choice, but you don't care about the hover blaster's choice not to have a useless melee power. No one said anything about any other powers except Medicine. I'm saying you shouldn't be forced to play a support role or a dps role if you don't want to, just like people play petless MMs. People should do what they want, if you don't like it just don't group with them.
No, boxing is never a wasted power. You can always use boxing and kick soloing or teaming to fill a chain or leveling or whatever, you can't always use stim and heal other if you solo if at all. In any case changing fighting would only affect very minor of people. Because even if you open up tough as a first pick, you still need another power to take weave, which most people will also take when they're commited to the fightan pool. I don't know where this "nerf fighting" came from, I'm pretty sure I never said anything about changing fighting.
No the idea is to make heal self opened up from the get go. So you have 3 powers to choose from instead of 2, and choose what ever you want the best. What you're saying in your example is changing the entire mechanics of the game which is a complete different issue, you might as well have suggested letting there be friendly fire on AOEs.
I'm starting to get a bit amazed that you really don't seem able to grasp that it's only about a preference. And only about yours. Well, you're entitled to have that preference. And to ask for the game to be changed to suit your preference. And people are equally entitled to disagree and ask that you not get your request.
It's really that simple, and trying to dress it up any other way isn't going to work.
You want the game to change just to suit you. I get that.
I would rather the game stay as is, just to suit me, or to change to suit me better, but I'd settle with stay the same. (all of this just specifically regarding the medicine pool, I don't want the game as a whole to stay the same globally forever, that would be stagnation)
There is nothing wrong with either of us wanting these things. But it's not about choice, and it's not about freedom. It's about personal preference. I think I can say it no clearer than that. -
Directly, no. It is an exemplum. A sort of anecdote with a point. The point being, that nothing is truly free. Better to argue of the cost if worth it, than to argue that there is no cost. But yes, it's conceptually related, but not critical to my specific game related statements.
Quote:Not really. Soloers gain basically nothing from aid other or stim. It doesn't make it more rounded at all. Unless you mean more rounded as it gimp your build slightly so you're not so powerful.
Quote:Well when you chose a buff/debuff AT you sort knew what you would be in for, playing support. The point here is that aid other/stim forces people to get support skills even for non support ATs or people who dont want to play support.
Quote:Which makes less sense to lock it behind 2 bad borderline useless soloing skills. If this game was designed to be solo friendly. Which is why I brought up changing stim to a mez or whatever, so it won't be 99% useless soloing, merely 95%.
As a side note, if your builds, especially the leveling up build, as opposed to the finished build, of some of your scrappers are a bit too fragile for your tastes, perhaps you can post a sample of what you have got to the Workshop, and I'm sure the people there would be more than happy to help you find ways to up your survivability. Very likely, without using the Medicine pool at all, thus avoiding your main complaint about having to take powers you don't want and solving your underlying problem without the need to modify the games existing structure. Make sure to let them know if you are looking for a leveling build, as opposed to a finished build. Or, both, if you like. -
Quote:I mentioned boxing in one of my posts, I see it exactly the same as the medicine pool, locking a power you would want for reason A behind a power you would only really want for reason B.
Just as stim/aid other adds nothing to a build looking for survivability, boxing adds nothing to a build looking for survivability (And doesn't even get on the bar on any of my toons, I actually use aid other/stim occasionally).
Totally agree with the Princess yet again. The argument for medicine getting the change the OP advocates (because you shouldn't be forced into getting a power that you don't want and don't need in order to get one you do want) applies just as well to Fighting as it does for Medicine. I'd even say it applies better for Fighting than for Medicine. -

Quote:You're welcome.Well I did create a new toon on Freedom last night. Needless to say I was very busy until about 3am. LOTS of teams forming, it was great.
I didn't realize I could have 12 toons per server. I think I'll keep the toons on Union for the weekend, and build new ones on Freedom for during the week.
Thanks again for the info
Yes, Freedom and Virtue will have the most traffic if that's the biggest priority, but most all of the non European servers have good traffic to about 10 PM US Pacific time, from what Ive seen. That said, after the big 2, different servers have different baselines as far as player base. Justice, Champions, and Triumph seem to be on the busier end, from what I've seen, without having the things that bug some people about Freedom and Virtue.
But, yes, you get boatloads of slots if you're a VIP, and can make alts on every server, so check out several and go with the ones with the community and activity level and cycle that work best for you.
Also if you end up with a fav alt on a serer that isn't you fav, and don't want to relevel, VIPs also get a free server transfer (or maybe more than one, I can't recall) every month. So you can always move one later. -
Basic answers for leveling.
Yes, I'd slot your toggles for some end reduction. For sure. Gasping for breath between every fight isn't fun. It's even less fun to have a long fight and be out of blue bar before the fight is over.
There are 2 different basic leveling up strategies to consider.
The first is SOs most of the way, while adding in a few choices IOs that you know you'll probably want in your final build anyhow.
The Steadfast Protection Res/Def only goes up to lvl 30, but most every build will include it anyhow. Adding that in as soon as you hit 27 is a no-brainer if you can.
Numina's +Regen/+Recovery should go into Health at lvl 27 or as soon as you can, too, as it works the same regardless of the level you slot in. So the lvl 30 version (the lowest available) isn't any better or worse than the lvl 50 version. Slot whatever ya can get. Right now any from lvl 30-38 would be helpful to you.
Same with Miracle: +Recovery, except it's range of availability is 20-40. Those both help with your blue bar, and the Numina's helps with Health, too. Some folks also add in a Kismet: +Acc. I don't feel that ones as big a deal, but if you are missing much, it can help.
Luck of the Gambler: +Recharges also can be of value, but, depending on your focus, you may want to wait. They are available form lvl 25-50, and though the bonus to recharge is always the same regardless of level (+7.5%) they also provide a boost to Def. The higher level ones give more of a +Def bonus than the lower. Something to keep in mind. About lvl 35 you can slot generic IOs to repalce the SOs. I prefer starting at lvl 37 slotting in lvl 40 Generic IOs, but lvl 35 IOs at 32 and above isn't bad, either. Then at 47-50 implement your final build. If you use some IOs in your final build that cap at 40, for example, you can, with no worry, start adding those in at lvl 37.
A little more complex, potentially more expensive (but still cheapish), and more effective, is to use less SOs and generic IOs in favour of what's called frankenslotting. This involves picking and choosing cheap, multi-function set IOs and mixing and matching tehm with little regard to the sets.
To illustrate the concept. A schedule A (the most common type, like Damage and Acc) SO at even level (blue in your enhancement screen) gives a 33% bonus. At best it will give a +38% bonus if it's 3 levels above your level (green). A lvl 35 generic IO will give a 36% bonus, and a lvl 40 about a 39% bonus. So, in a power you could slot 1 Acc and 1 Damage and get at max a bit under +40% to both. A lvl 30 melee set IO that gives a bonus to Acc and Damage gives +21.5% to both. So, if you took one of these from one set,a nd one from another, and slotted both, you'd have an effective +43.5% to both Acc and Damage, and you can do this at lvl 27. The triple effect set IOs are better still. Taking advantage of this effect is the premise behind frankenslotting.
If you want more details, I'll try to help, as I am sure, will others.
If you're willing to spend some time in the auction house, you can gain a significant amount for performance with frankenslotting. If you'd rather not invest a lot of time in the auction house along the way to 50 on something that's sorta temporary, just use SOs and IOs and sprinkle in choice IOs and you'll still be better off than with SOs alone.
Oh! And, welcome back! -

Quote:(1,2,5-7) Chasing set bonuses is fine, but only if you also get decent use out of your powers. Slotted the way you have them, you won't, so you'll have bad powers and nice set bonuses. Not necessarily a great recipe for a good result.(1,2,5-7) Chasing set bonuses to get desired HP/DEF/RECH
(3) I will also have Ageless Radial Destiny...so AM had less priority for recharge, but the damage boost is dually noted...and I will consider reworking to accomodate for that.
(4) It's that bad? With all the recovery I have I would have thought to be ok, but I will reconsider the slotting.
(8)EM Pulse is not a full crash? How hard is it? I typically avoid crashing T9's all together, I don't have a use for a crash, but...if it leaves enough to still function...
This toon is planned for incarnate trials and end game content, I never exemp much if any at all, and even then it's usually on my badger toon to chase badges(which is not this toon)...so I opted to go for the boosted DEF from Scorpion Shield in the Mace Mastery pool. For sheer survivability do you think that I would be better off taking Primal Mastery?
(3) As long as it's up all the time, and you get max end mod out of it, you'll be fine.
(4) It's horrible. You don't have close to enough to debuff and hold cloud at the same time. Thus, I'd skip it. But there are other options if you want to keep it, but as it is, this won't work well.
(8) Nope, not a full crash. 15 seconds of basically no recovery, but if you blue bar is nearly fullt o start and you don't have otehr end issues, you might not even notice. If you are huffing to start with, though, it will not be fun.
Lastly, as I said in my previous post, I think Power Mastery is a much better choice for a Rad/Rad, but only if you get survivabilty elsewhere. For me, I went RI for that survivability. And Force of Nature for the tricky spots (and Eye of the Magus, too). But with RI done well, and the self heal, smart inspiration use is often enough for most situations.
Also, note for added survivability, Lingering Radiation, has a massive -recharge, and a good duration. So if there isn't a pressing need to target it for the -regen on a AV or whatnot, throwing it around to suppress incoming attacks is a good idea. And Enervating Field is not jsut a -30 Res, it's also a -25% damage, too. -
I love my Rad/Rad. I think it can be every bit as fun as a Dark, but I am really skeptical if it'll happen with the build you have posted.
There is a LOT I would do differently.
I'd drop choking cloud. I would only keep it if you also have EM Pulse, which you don't. If you can add EM Pulse, in then maybe.
Mutation is over slotted.
AM may be underslotted. Especially if you want to solo much. As Psy said, it's not just more end,and more recharge, that extra damage is very noticeable.
I'd want more accuracy in Lingering Rad. You really don't want it to miss vs an AV/GM and you don't have a ton of +Acc or +Tohit. Guess you could always use Aim first, but I like to get all the attacks that I can that dish damage out during my +50% dam bonus.
Again, echoing Psy, Achilles' Heel is better in Neutrino. Chance to proc every sec instead of every 10.
However, Neutrino is kinda paltry on the damage so I doubt I'd slot it for max damage. Slot for Acc and Recharge, and then make it a proc cannon.
Also, even if you don't make Neutrino a Proc cannon, I'd still move the Def ATE somewhere else. I'd say Cosmic Burst. Since the Def ATE proc (like all ATE procs) is a PPM type, and not a percentage, you have no gain in slotting it in a superfast power like Neutrino.
I'd lose Fallout if you solo much, or are aiming mostly on the iTrials. It is, in my experience, very rarely able to be used. Of course, if you don't exempt much, you maybe should lose Mutation for the same reason.
A lot of things are underslotted for end reduction. If you run full out as is, you'll be sucking wind fast. Of course, if you took Power Mastery in place of Mace, you could add in Conserve, which would really help ya lot, especially in a longish AV/GM fight.
And the biggest biggie.... RI. Needs -tohit debuff. I'd cap the tohit debuff values if possible. I'd not worry about -def at all, as your attacks can provide enough extra if RIs base level -def isn't enough. But really, even at it's base it should be plenty. My .02 dollars worth, I'd slot it with an Enzyme or 2. I paid billions for Enzymes to use in my RI, but now they cost 10 million-ish, I think. That way you can boost -tohit and +def at the same time, and get nice end reduction values. I do like the chance for damage and chance for damage and chance for assorted debuff procs in here, however.
If you make RI a better survival tool, you'll not need Scorpion Shield. Then, you can go Power Mastery, and it'll be a much sounder choice. Everything about Power Mastery works for a rad/rad. PBU, FoN, Temp Invul, Conserve Power (which I mentioned above [and previous posters also mentioned]) all do good things.
Hope some of that helps ya. -
Quote:Nopers, it's pretty much a totally new TF, same basic plotline though.
Very cool. Thanks for the sneak preview. Is the old version in Ouro now, like Posi was? I hope so?
Or I can just wait 24-28 hours and check myself. Or, if the Beta is still available, look now, but as I recall the Beta tends to come down right before a new roll out. I admit, I haven't checked, though. -
Quote:It's weird, I sorta agree, and sorta disagree. At low levels (not so much true with tanks) it feels like it needs one. At higher levels, it really doesn't feel like it needs one, but the same is true of it's t9. It's quite handy when ya get it, but by lvl 40, and certainly 50, SRs t9 is pretty worthless (except maybe on the iTrials).I always forget that tanks have higher base numbers when I start talking about low level survivability. So yeah Aid Self would be good for them.
I think SR needs a heal regardless though, debuff resistance isn't really enough to push it ahead of Energy now imho.
So, if SR could use any sorta of change, I'd say make the t9 Dull Pain/Regen Boost/Healy sorta thing. No crasah maybe, or minimal one, and fastish recharge. It could also mirror Shield, and be a Resistance boost, too and that would be equally viable and useful.
But, this option still wouldn't put the healish power in the range of those that need it most. I don't think Id want to trade any of the t1-8s for a heal, though, however.
Some power sets just have rough patches they need to get through before they shine. I mean, how many trollers sets have to slog along till they get their pets. Quite a few it seems. I'm quite OK with SR being a late bloomer. I also tend to enjoy the variety of having not all power sets have to have a heal. Different paths to survivability. Regen uses lots of heal and healish clicks and works. WP, has none, and is widely regarded as a great set. So too, Shield. No heal, but quite enjoyed, and quite a strong set. SR is ridiculous at higher levels, shrugging off scads of enemies even those armed with massive debuffs that would kill most every other set. SRs only real Achilles' heel is massive +tohit or +acc enemies. And really, every set should have an Achilles heel. Sure, SR gets later to the party than some sets, but so what. I don't have any problem with sets progressing at different paces to some degree. It is my usual experience that the late bloomers are very much worth the wait.
Edit: To add an addendum.... Even if SR desperately needed a self heal, and even if everyone agred this was the case, I'd say just change SR, don't change the medicine pool as a means of fixing SR. That said, I always love discussing SR, but won't do so here further, as that's more properly a whole new thread.
Second Edit: Forgot to address your second line. I think SR is already ahead of Energy. And yes, while the higher DDR is part of the reason, the biggie is positional, rather than typed defenses. No real psy or toxic hole is a big advantage, especially as psi enemies are quite prevalent. But, I certainly don't think SR is ahead by much. Just a tiny margin. Again, though, as I respectfully disagree, my position is, too, just an opinion. Both sets are a total blast, though. Through and through fun.. -
Quote:Yes, I loved those quite a bit, and the feel ws great. Nice change of pace and definitely something I'd like to see more of.What IS my preference?
Well, for recently-added examples, we have Laura Lockhart & Graham Easton. (I'm assuming villainside's 2 additional arcs are similar... haven't had a villain level through that range since they came out.) both are notable heroic tales that manage to happen within the city without overwhelming the city. I'd love to see more of that, but as my first post implied, if the devs don't make more of that, though, that's fine. If they just patch some of AE's shortcomings, I can make my own experiences there. -
Quote:I wish you'd stop making assertions as if you have some sort of infallible ultimate knowledge about things.
Either give examples, make it clear you are speculating, or just dont't bother posting.
Seconded. If you are going to refute something with that degree of confidence, you need to share your thought process/logic, or cite references. Otherwise, it's a worthless bit of contrariness.
