back from long hiatus, need some SR help.
Just hit 35 on my katana/SR scrapper. Currently have all lvl 35 SO's, toggles slotted with 3x defense, passives slotted with 1x defense. With combat jumping, I'm at about 30% melee/ranged defense. I've seen people say they have like 50% defense from SR, and I'm wondering how? obviously i'm lower level but where is that extra coming from? The passives don't seem to benefit when slotted, so that can't be it. Slotting more than 3 in a power hits DR, so that can't it.
Also, i'm running out of endurance practically every fight with just the two toggles and CJ running. My character rapes, he just is exhausted after each pull or two which shouldn't be happening. Difficulty is on +1/x3. |
If you left before issue 8, you wouldn't know about Invention Origin enhancements.
They come in 2 varieties. The common, generic ones that act like an SO that never expires, and Set Enhancements.
The latter is how people are reaching 50%+ on SR scrappers.
The way Set Enhancements work is you have a set of enhancements that share a name, such as Mako's Bite, or Obliteration. When you slot more than one of the same set in a power you get bonuses to your stats. Many enhancement sets offer defense set bonuses for slotting a certain number of them (usually 5 or 6 for positional defense).
Many players slot full builds of Set Enhancements and their characters become MUCH more powerful than using SOs. They can even become more powerful than pre-ED Perma Elude SR scrappers (perma Elude is no longer possible).
Here's some reading for you to get you up to speed on what you missed: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Inventions_System
Also, slot your passives. Slotting your passives increases your defense debuff resistance. SR can reach 95% resistance to defense debuffs, which means an attack that would debuff your defense by 7.5% will only lower your defense by 0.35%. SR gets its debuff resistance by slotting the passives. And they DO benefit from slotting.
I recommend taking the Fighting pool. Tough will give you some very useful Smashing/Lethal damage resistance (the two most common types of damage in the game) and it will give you a place to slot a certain Invention Origin enhancement that increases your defense to everything by 3%. Weave will give you another source of defense, meaning you won't have to slot as many Set Enhancements to reach the soft-cap.
Soft-Cap: The point at which adding more of something gives no more benefit. In this case we're talking about the soft-cap for defense. The defense soft-cap is 45%. Once you hit 45% to melee, ranged, and AoE, adding more defense will not benefit you. This is because most enemies in the game have a base 50% chance to hit you, and the game will not allow that chance to drop below 5% (they will ALWAYS have a 5% chance to hit you, even if your defense is 200%), so once you hit 45% you have reduced their chance to hit you as low as it will ever go.
There are enhancements and set bonuses that will increase your endurance recovery as well. So you should be able to solve your end consumption problem with a little bit of effort.
Generally speaking, for SR you want to focus on getting your defense to 45% to all positions first, and then you want to focus on max HP and regeneration after that. You also may want to add more recharge after you fix your end consumption problems as well.
I won't go into all the ways to do that right now, since it sounds like all this is brand new to you. I'm just giving you a heads up on what you missed.
Once you've got a little more understanding of how the Invention System works, I'll be happy to help you with your build. I'm on pretty sporadically throughout the day and do most of my posting from work, so I may not be able to get to it right away, but I promise I'll get around to helping you once you're ready to dive into it.
Here: http://www.cohtitan.com/
On that page, to the right side, you will see something that says "Download Mids' Hero Designer". That program is an invaluable resource when it comes to planning out your build. It compiles all the Invention Origin enhancements with their set bonuses, and shows you how it affects your character. It makes planning out a respec MUCH easier than writing it down on paper.
Welcome back to the game, a LOT has changed since you've been gone. Most of it for the better.

I forgot to add: Fitness is inherent now at level 2. You get all 4 powers when you train to level 2. But, in order to avoid doubling up on Stamina, legacy builds remain unchanged until you respec the character.
So, when you respec your character next, you will be able to choose 3 extra powers that were foremerly being taken up by the Fitness pool. (assuming you took it)

wow thanks for that reply. Yeah, I left right when the IO's came out. I knew of them, but I didn't really know anything about them. It seems like the set IO's aren't really worth pursuing until late game, but the generics are so we don't have to replace every 5 levels (unless I'm wrong). I could use some help with a leveling build. Nothing fancy, but just things like: should I put 3 or 4 slots in a toggle? Should I slot an end reduction in them? I guess just a cookie cutter build for SR at least. For katana, I saw someone say "once you get x amount of defense, drop divine avalanche" I forgot the number, but you probably know it. Also, since I got 3 free abilities from dropping fitness I took gambler's cut, cause I like the animation and it's nice to use on someone with a sliver of health to not waste endurance on. Do people still skip this? If they do, am I wasting slots slotting it?
I'll dl that mids designer, maybe it'll answer some questions I have
lvl 50 Ice/Ice Blaster
Basic answers for leveling.
Yes, I'd slot your toggles for some end reduction. For sure. Gasping for breath between every fight isn't fun. It's even less fun to have a long fight and be out of blue bar before the fight is over.
There are 2 different basic leveling up strategies to consider.
The first is SOs most of the way, while adding in a few choices IOs that you know you'll probably want in your final build anyhow.
The Steadfast Protection Res/Def only goes up to lvl 30, but most every build will include it anyhow. Adding that in as soon as you hit 27 is a no-brainer if you can.
Numina's +Regen/+Recovery should go into Health at lvl 27 or as soon as you can, too, as it works the same regardless of the level you slot in. So the lvl 30 version (the lowest available) isn't any better or worse than the lvl 50 version. Slot whatever ya can get. Right now any from lvl 30-38 would be helpful to you.
Same with Miracle: +Recovery, except it's range of availability is 20-40. Those both help with your blue bar, and the Numina's helps with Health, too. Some folks also add in a Kismet: +Acc. I don't feel that ones as big a deal, but if you are missing much, it can help.
Luck of the Gambler: +Recharges also can be of value, but, depending on your focus, you may want to wait. They are available form lvl 25-50, and though the bonus to recharge is always the same regardless of level (+7.5%) they also provide a boost to Def. The higher level ones give more of a +Def bonus than the lower. Something to keep in mind. About lvl 35 you can slot generic IOs to repalce the SOs. I prefer starting at lvl 37 slotting in lvl 40 Generic IOs, but lvl 35 IOs at 32 and above isn't bad, either. Then at 47-50 implement your final build. If you use some IOs in your final build that cap at 40, for example, you can, with no worry, start adding those in at lvl 37.
A little more complex, potentially more expensive (but still cheapish), and more effective, is to use less SOs and generic IOs in favour of what's called frankenslotting. This involves picking and choosing cheap, multi-function set IOs and mixing and matching tehm with little regard to the sets.
To illustrate the concept. A schedule A (the most common type, like Damage and Acc) SO at even level (blue in your enhancement screen) gives a 33% bonus. At best it will give a +38% bonus if it's 3 levels above your level (green). A lvl 35 generic IO will give a 36% bonus, and a lvl 40 about a 39% bonus. So, in a power you could slot 1 Acc and 1 Damage and get at max a bit under +40% to both. A lvl 30 melee set IO that gives a bonus to Acc and Damage gives +21.5% to both. So, if you took one of these from one set,a nd one from another, and slotted both, you'd have an effective +43.5% to both Acc and Damage, and you can do this at lvl 27. The triple effect set IOs are better still. Taking advantage of this effect is the premise behind frankenslotting.
If you want more details, I'll try to help, as I am sure, will others.
If you're willing to spend some time in the auction house, you can gain a significant amount for performance with frankenslotting. If you'd rather not invest a lot of time in the auction house along the way to 50 on something that's sorta temporary, just use SOs and IOs and sprinkle in choice IOs and you'll still be better off than with SOs alone.
Oh! And, welcome back!
Gambler's Cut is actually what most of the Katana players with high end builds use, and skip Sting of the Wasp. At high levels of recharge it's incredibly quick animation lets it fit perfectly in between your big hitters.
A high end Katana attack chain would be: Gambler's Cut - Soaring Dragon - Gambler's Cut - Golden Dragonfly - Repeat
Building Scrappers has changed quite a bit since you left. The attack chain above would require quite a bit of global recharge bonuses. (acquired through IOs)
I start slotting sets when I'm 3 levels below the max level of the set (if that max is under 50). Certain things, like Numina's Convalescence +Regeneration/+Recovery and Miracle +Recovery should be slotted at the earliest level you can afford them.
By the way, things are INSANELY expensive now compared to when you left. A single IO recipe can go for 100,000,000 influence now for some of the pricier ones.

Below is the Claws/SR build I've been messing around with, it may give you some ideas. Note as you level, it's a good idea to slot the passives with at least the equivalent (def bonus) of 2 Def IOs -- this will max out your resistance to Def Debuffs (95% resistance). One of the few things SR has going for it above other sets.

I'll dl that mids designer, maybe it'll answer some questions I have |
I'll keep it as cheap as possible, as I'm sure you don't have piles of cash on hand to build it with. It will be in Mids' format, so when I post it you can load it directly into the program and view what I did yourself.
Just looking at the build should answer most of your questions, but if you have any others I'll be happy to answer them as best I can.
I was going to do it last night but I got busy and didn't have time. I'll try to get to it sometime this afternoon.

This isn't soft capped, but close to it at 35. Gives you 42%def to melee and range damage. You could swap out one of the attacks for divine avalanche.

Forevermore's builds are pretty solid.
The second one is a high-end Incarnate soft-capped build. Unless you plan on running a lot of Incarnate content when you get to 50, the levels of defense in it will not be necessary. It will also be VERY expensive.
Sorry I didn't get around to posting one for you, real life intruded again.
