Optional Objectives

Do any optional objectives have any actual game affect? I can't tell but it seems like not, yet it seems odd to even list them as objectives if they don't do anything.

It mostly has to do with the letters "R" and "P" in "MMORPG". Also, you earn extra XP, Inf and drops while working towards most sub-objectives.

As to the first sentence. How did I know that odds were high that the very first reply would be a snarky one?

As to the second sentence, I've not seen any evidence of this. How can you tell?

Well, when the extra objective is a glowie, and you click it, you get a message telling you that you earned some Influence, and possibly an Inspiration. When the objective is to kill some dudes... You killed some dudes that you wouldn't have otherwise, and they give XP, Inf, and drops.

EDIT: Also, there was no snark in my reply. On some of my characters, I will choose to do or skip the extra objectives based solely on what the character would do, just like I click the response in conversation windows that my character would give. RP takes more forms than just standing under Atlas/in the D chatting.

Some of them do change future events within that mission. I remember a few cases in Praetoria:
1) There is a mission to disarm explosives with an optional objective to disarm 30 additional ones int he same mission. Skipping the main target until all the optional ones are done will prevent a timer from counting down that you have to run out of the mission before it ends.
2) There is a tough Elite Boss fight in one of the moral choice missions. You have the option of calling off PPD reinforcements to make the fight more difficult. Not completing that optional objective gives you 3 PPD lieutenant allies for the final fight.

There are probably other examples.
