  3. That aside, it seems that there's a bias in Praetoria. Thiery and Psimon are prominent male Psychics, as well as a number of others. 'Mother' does seem to have a bias, especially if you look at First Ward.

Been running that arc recently with my 'native' Praetorians, and have seen quite a few male Awakened, and I think I can say with some authority that there are male psychics in addition to the Syndicate that exist that just don't fit within "Mother's" scope of usefulness, for whatever reason. (though some have been given here).

  5. So does that mean that Lord Recluse and Ghost Widow (or Red Widow, depending, but GW seems more appropriate due to her popularity) will be completely removed from the history of the game entirely, including any ret-conning of badges and story involving them?

Just curious. I'm not bitter or anything... >.>

And, really, if it's a legal problem, I'd appreciate being told it's a legal problem. I might not like it, but I'd not like it less than what's happening now. For all their super-dickery, I still prefer what Ubi did in saying they weren't releasing the Prince of Persia DLC for "business reasons" over pretending to not know what players are talking about.
As for our characters being part of the EULA, I get that, but this could have been a rider in the contract way back when the game was first conceptualised. For all I know, all the Dev's 'personal' characters may be included in that clause. Way back, the thought may not have occured to them that this could cause problems down the line. They made a LOT of assumptions like that back in the day about a lot of things in-game, I don't see why that wouldn't apply in this case as well.

As for not disclosing anything about it, Paragon has a bad habit of keeping things 'too close to their chest' even when it's good stuff, much less a sticky legal thing. The funny thing is, as far as I know, they're not acting like they don't know what we're talking about... they just aren't saying anything at all.

Again, I have no clue if there's legal reasons, I'm just trying to wrap my head around why they'd do such a pancake move, and if it were just a 'petty revenge' thing, I would think someone in a position of authority would call shenanigans before it got to the point that they're ret-conning badges.

Unless everyone over there really hates Jack that much, and if that's the case, he may deserve such a snubbing. However, I still feel the loss of those two badges isn't fair to the players.
  7. Reading over on the comic hero/culture forums about the Superman case, that got me thinking.

What if they have to remove Statesman and Sister Psyche, and things associated with them, from the game for legal reasons they can't explain, making this seem like a petty change?

Hear me out. If they are required to put up in the comics/promotional material that these two characters were created by Jack Emmert, he may still have some legal control over them, causing difficulty when it comes to keeping them in-game or making changes to the characters. For all we know they may be contractually obligated to pay him when their image is used in game, and they want to close that door. (As for 'promotional material' that may not be included in the clause, making that safe to still use, for example)

Now I'm not saying this is true. I have no idea. I'm just tossing that out there as a possibility. It's really bothered me that these moves seem very out of character for our Dev team, with little to no response from them regarding, or even defending, these moves.

Remember, Positron isn't the lead Dev anymore, it's War Witch, and I really feel if this was just a petty move on Matt's behalf, she'd would probably have had something to say about it, yet these 'broad stroke' changes dealing with these characters are being made as quietly as possible, with little fuss or defense on their behalf.

Again, just tossing that out there. I have no clue what the actual situation is, so I could just as well be spitting in the wind. (Still don't like the badge changes though)
  8. Really?

    Really?!

That's just sad. They need to fix it so we can have both. I have to say I'll be really, really disappointed if this goes live.

I'm sure there are lots of characters (and players) those badges mean something to. I remember someone mentioning they were looking forward to the Statesman helmet from the recent loyalty program, because they tied their character into Statesman's lore, and wanted to honor him. I forget who it was, but I bet they'd be upset to hear this.

I daresay those badges mean even more now that they are dead. (even if you can get them via Oroborous- Those of us who were around for the whole thing... Yeah this can't be allowed to stick.) I really hope they fix this.

They're cardboard cutouts more than anything.
Like I said, the Talons came from Praetorian Earth chasing Diabolique, they may not be tied to Primal Earth's Furies in any way. Possibly so, but I really don't think so. Though I consider it odd they aren't addressed at all in this storyline, seeing as how last we heard, they're staying in Kings Row...

In any event, the Talons are creations of Praetoria's Furies who went insane after Cole broke the balance of power in the world. The Talons are insane as well, driven by rage. They're supposed to be two dimensional like that. Intellegent beings having their rage amplified until it becomes an unthinking frenzy that the Talons then direct.

I'm willing to bet if there's any more to be said about the Talons on Primal Earth (though it seems in the storyline we drive them off) I'm really hoping Primal's Furies get brought into the picture. As growing incarnates, I'm sure they're as interested in us as we them anyway.

As you complete the itrials, Prometheus tells you more. I found out about that a week or so back about that myself. Spent about a half-hour poking him for different reactions. Might be worth running the trials at least once to get more info.

Apparently I need to do the TPN forward on my 'main' namesake, as that's what he keeps going on about with him. Don't remember if I've done it with him or not, but probably not since he's where I want him to be 'incarnate' wise so far.

On the subject if Loyalists vs. Resistance - it's a mistake to be cynical about it. The story in Praetoria is intentionally vague, written so a to be subject to different interpretations by different people. I generally don't like open-ended stories, but here's it's not the story that's open-ended: That's pretty much firmly concluded. What's open-ended is the morality of it. We're given choices, we're given context, we opt which way to go. Even the Crusaders can be argued to be doing what's best for the people, even if they're really big ******** about it.

Not everyone will agree with everyone else's interpretation. Obviously. But just because you disagree with another person's interpretation of morality doesn't make that other person wrong for holding his belief. At the end of the day, that's exactly what it is - a belief.
I agree that some folks seem to be getting caught up on that. At the end of the day, it's about characters and stories, folks.

I'd really like to see them continue to build on content for Praetorians until they can reach 50+ incarnate without changing alignment. I have at LEAST four (representing each of the 'alignments' in Praetoria) eagerly waiting in the wings for the Night Ward. Each has their reasons for staying Praetorian, two of which are the Praetorian counterparts to to Primal characters, making it somewhat pointless to 'cross over' and the other two because they're that steadfast in their goals. I'd like to see Praetorians as the 'ultimate' crossover characters that (like Rogues and Vigilantes) can go between each and make their own choices, because they exist outside the roles Primal earth enforces.

Though, I'd like to see more content be made for Vigilante and Rogue content too... so I may be biased.

That, or the Furies are sending their servants through interdimensional portals (and through time) in order to act against the Well and its multi-dimensional interests.

Possibly the Furies have access to one of the other 13 methods of time travel that have not yet been revealed?

(Which raises the question- where is the Furies' base of operations? Are they acting out of an Ouroboros-like pocket dimension?)
That's actually where my 'suspension of disbelief' has lain when it comes to seeing the Talons in Cimerora. Yes, they're seperate, but potentially the same (presuming the implied 'The Well' is the same for ALL humans- and has been supported so far) and go where the root of 'sin' exists (that being Mot and his influence, in this case). I just wanted to see if I was the only one who thought about that possibility.

As an aside, if 'The Well' covers all of humanity, does this also have anything to do with the Rikti? Based on everything we've seen, they may have broken away from the concept of a 'Well' alltogether, and because of such, bested Battallion.

Not sure what that says about humanity as a whole :-/

Anyway, based on everything I've read about them maybe the Furies don't intervene because they are curious, and the fate of Praetorian and Primal Earth are so intertwined at this point.

    That's my personal theory anyway.

Keep in mind the creatures in DA are NOT from Primal Earth's Furies. Primal's Furies probably have no clue they're here. Nor would they probably be listened to if they tried to communicate with them.

The Talons are a result of Praetorian's Furies being driven insane by Emperor Cole's choices and actions. Nobody knows where the Praetorian Furies are, or if they're even alive anymore.

And the Talons, like someone else pointed out, don't care about the morality of those they punish, only that it's percieved that they have commited 'sins' whether it's to someone else, or or even just something they personally regret. Following Diabolique into a place as miserable as Dark Astoria... well, you can see where it all starts going downhill from there.

Edit, which keeps me scratching my head about how they got into Primal Earth's past...

  17. What would I like to see?

For those who remember the not-too-far-in-the-past Justice League animated series, You may or may not remember that after two seasons they changed formats to Justice League Unlimited. While Justice League focused on the 'core' group, the JLU focused on individuals or groups coming together to solve whatever case was up. Mix and match, get to know the whole DC universe and it's miriad characters. I liked both styles, but there's a key here that really hit a chord with me.

I want us, the players, to have the chance to become the "Unlimited" to the Freedom Phalanx. Make us the newest members alongside Penny. Give us the opportunity to take the signature characters as mentors like villains can in Arachnos. Give us story arcs that make us care about each of them and why they believe the way they do, to earn their trust so they may teach us their secrets (like the villain patrons do). Come up with story arcs both hero and villain side to expand upon that relationship/understanding of lore that makes us give a pancake about any of them and why they're in 'our' (the player's) world.

The trick here is to do it without putting words directly in our character's mouths, but by drawing us lines that give us understanding (whether we agree or not) into the heroes passion and/or reasoning for doing what they do in a way that anyone can respect (again, whether we agree or not). Not as easy as villains, but just as possible.

Many have made a lot of 'broad brush' strokes for the various hero's motivations/faults during the SSA, but what else do we have to base on them? Don't tell me comics and novels (though I've read them all myself). Most players, especially new ones, won't get it, and don't know there's story outside of this game.

I see a lot of empathy for the villain Patrons in a lot of these replys (which is funny, since apparently nobody likes to play villain side) compared to the disdain we have for the signature heroes. This, in my opinion, is one of the main reasons for this. We never get to see their story, or ambitions, played out in a way we can get 'in-game'.

I have characters that would be honored to join the Phalanx and finally get to understand the 'premiere' heroes of Paragon. Don't you? Let's join Penny in getting to know the Phalanx and be a part of the team! (disclaimer: This, like the villain patrons, would presume this would be pre-incarnate content.)

That's what I really would like to see.
  18. A lot of great answers in this thread. I've asked myself these kinds of questions myself, and I think it really depends on how something is portrayed, and what it can do.

My 'main' villain is Science. He is a Robot/Dark/Elec MasterMind. Like Doctor Doom, he weilds technology, science, and magic like tools. I chose Science because no other one origin would be able to encompass what he's about. He started out just a natural (but ambitious) man with a high intelect (possibly mutant levels of intellect) who can design fantastic Robots to do his bidding (Tech- human minions are too unpredictable) and weild the forces of eldrich electricity and dark magics (magic... obviously). Not to mention he can fly, teleport, has strong leadership skills, and miraculous molecular stability rearangement devices (healing)! Only through Science could he be able to do all these things. Experimentation, education, and practiced mastery of all the tools at his disposal.

Now, for a robot not to be tech based, I would have to say it would have to lay in the concepts behind it:

The first and most simple question. Is it sentient? That opens the door right there for it to be almost anything. A simple robot is only able to do what it's programmed to do, like any good computer. A well programmed robot can emulate human behaviour and emotions, and may appear intellegent, but ultimately someone else is responsible for it's development. Now a true A.I. blurs those lines, or can erase them entirely, but then you start getting into the context of a soul and other things that can make it more than the sum of its parts. Like someone mentioned, Transformers could be Natural origin for that reason.

Is what makes it truly sentient be some strange power source? Take Tin Mage for example. He is decidedly a robot but is powered by arcane energies, making him Magic. What about 'Cosmic Energy' (al-la the Fantastic Four). That would defintely be Science!

Does it have strange components? Is it's brain and nervous system some new bio-mesch developed to mimic human capacities for senses, emotions, etc? What if it's a Psychic Mutant's brain in a robot body. The body is tech, but it's powers are obviously Mutant... where does that sit on the scale?

How does it work? Take Warlock of the X-titles for example. He's a part of a species of Cybernetic 'techno-organic' viruses that take over living hosts. Is that Natural (techno-organic virus) Cybernetic (being that techno parasite that takes over hosts) or Science (just because both can be applied)? Warlock is also considered a Mutant because unlike any other member of his species, he has compassion, which is why he's part of the X-titles.

For me, I have some characters that are obviously "X" but more often than not, I have to give it a lot of thought. It seems you are too. I hope all our feedback helps!
  19. Funny thing is, I usually do. I have quite a few that I discovered I still have from the last transfer off my old comptuer from about a year ago (that doesn't save the loss of my current projects unfortunately). In fact, most of my personal files (not programs, but pictures, music, etc) are on a remote drive, more because I'm lazy and never really 'moved in' to the new computer. I just keep a link to my remote drive on the desktop and use that like most people use their personal folder.

Unfortunately, City of * doesn't allow for a change in where I store my AE files at, and when I got that bug, my computer crashed hard, so I couldn't get to them.

Anyway, I was only working ahead on 3 of the new arcs in the series, and only one complete; the other two had only framework and a little setup, but mostly bare bones work, so it could have been a lot worse. Just going to be a setback is all, and wanted to keep folks who are interested informed.

That was the first MA arc I created. Nobody seemed to get it at the time

(just lost quite a few MA arcs I was working on due to computer problems, but due to its age, I might still have that one sitting around somewhere... hmmm)

I really loved those old comic ads. I'm glad someone else remembers them!

At one point I even thought about finding out what permissions I would need to compile them all and make a coffee table book out of them, but with at least three companies involved (two that are competitors at that) I figured I wouldn't have near the resources to make that happen. (But if someone else reads this and actually wants to go through the effort, I'd buy it- hint-hint)

Plus if I did it I'd want to add, as a bonus epilogue to the book, the issue of Marvel Super Hero Team-Up that had Galactus team up with Aunt May. Now WHO remembers that one?!
  21. Hey all. I made an announcement early last month that I would be starting a series of re-writes in the MA, based on the old unconnected core story arcs that gave so much information into the history of this world we live in (when we log into City of, that is )

I want to say first of all, that I really appreciate the support of the few folks that ran my "001-Bonefire: FREEDOM Style" arc gave me, and that at the beginning of this month I had planned to introduce "002(A)-The Clockwork Captive" with Carla Brunelli as the next installment. Unfortunately, I had finished it, but before I published it my computer got sick (a virus).

I just got my computer from the shop this afternoon, unfortunately, the nature of the virus called for a full factory re-install, and that arc (and the following "002(B)-The Mind of a King" that I'd already started on) were lost. For that, I apologize. You couldn't begin to get how heartsick that realization was to me when I found out.

I WILL re-write them, but that means that my FREEDOM Style arcs are going to take another month to produce, but I promise that I will re-write them and by next month you'll learn what it means for a community to stick together and help a hero get to the bottom of a poor man's distress!

    Watch for it!

Again, thanks to those few that supported the first one. I will get the next one out as soon as I can get it re-written (even if it's before the end of the month- I'll do what I can in my spare time to get this one and the next one out by the end of the month if I can help it)!!!

    Lyc~

It's unfortunate that it's only us old geeks or geeks into older 'history' of the genre knew who John Carter was. That's my theory anyway. As much as bean counters are afraid of 'new franchises', viewers are afraid of trying the same due to ticket costs. While it's not new, I doubt most of today's movie-going audience knew who John Carter was.

Even I admit, at this point he was like a niche within a niche. It's was like how Scott Pilgrim was expected to be much more lucrative than it was. The thing is, you had to know who he was to 'get' what they were selling. Frankly if I didn't have a kid who was a fan of the series, and a frame of reference from my old console days, I'm not sure I would have bothered either.

The 'bennie and the slap' (bonus points if you get the reference) thing with 'geek' culture is that it's always evolving. I'd both LOVE and DREAD an Elric/Stormbringer movie nowadays. It would sell for the 'emo' culture Elric himself thrives upon that a lot of 'kids' (and I use that term as an 'old fart' loosely) and the FX with the CGI nowadways would be utterly amazing and could live up to the expectations I have for it... but with Hollywood exec's at the head with no understanding of the culture they're trying to appeal to... The story could turn into utter rubbish with complete ease.

Or become a comedy like Dark Shadows
  23. I'm betting Batallion isn't going to be magical. Just sayin',

And I think it's to late to change, mostly because of the writers. Writer A comes in, depowers him, and then Writer B comes in and wants to show off this awesome scene of Superman lifting a mountain, and editors just think "Fans will like that image, let's do it!" without thinking fans would likely still be impressed with Superman lifting half the titanic (thinking Superman Returns here, for all it's faults, I still loved it's visuals )
I think they handled Superman's power levels really well in the Justice League/JL Unlimited cartoon series. He had all the earmarks of what made him Superman, but he could be knocked unconsious, and even though it took a lot to do, he could be hurt.

I don't think it's too late to change them, moreso because they don't have to, just how their power is percieved and/or utilized that could make the difference. That, however, requires smarter writing. Say one issue he lifts up a mountain, the next will start off with him hovering in the upper atmosphere soaking up the suns rays with a narrative of him explaining how that took a lot out of him and he needed time to 'recharge'. This isn't the first time he's had to do that, just make it more visible. Casually slip in the occasional 'need to recharge' here or there until it's understood that he's powerful, but even he has limits even though you may never see them in the stories themselves

Of course, I could see one story arc where he does get 'overworked' to the point he starts losing his powers, but that would have to be tread lightly and used rarely (if just the once).

As for Wonder Woman, I think part of the problem is they're trying to explain Themyscira too hard if I'm understanding correctly. It's the 'mythical' Greek island where wonder woman comes from, filled with Amazons. We know this. There's no need to get into their day to day habits, how Wonder Woman was born, or do they have any children, and if so, what do they do with the boys? The old TV show ignored all that, and we liked it just fine.

The fact she comes from this island is rooted enough in the lore that like the Animated stuff they've come out with in the past few years (including stuff from JL/JLU) we got to know a few of her friends/family, what they were like, and we really don't need to know much more. The mystery of it makes it more magical and alluring, if you ask me.

Sometimes less is more, and for Diana's backstory, I think that holds true. Heck, I think that holds true for a LOT of golden-age characters, and a couple silver-age ones (read the original story behind the Fantastic Four some time).
