Doesn't mean they can't be veterans of other games as well.

You have four 'true' categories of "healers":

    1) The Ignorants, aka "newbies"
[-]a) These are typically (but not always, some people can just be that oblivious, even after 50 months...particularly if they do nothing but solo or rarely play support, etc., "fish out of water" as it were) your pilgrims from games where a buff that gives you a 2.5% increase to physical resistance is huge as opposed to this game where 2.5% is what you get from an IO bonus and your regular powers are five to ten times that potent.
[-]b) They can also just be exactly as their category says: They just don't know any better.
[-]c) Usually, with a little bit of friendly, not overbearing education, you can fix their misconceptions/misguidance. If you can't, then you're looking at a Category 3 Healer. And do remember that what you view as being friendly might actually be passive-aggressive and actually ******-ish.
[-]d) Also applies to anyone that says "nice heals" past the early-mid teens (and not in a surreptitiously sarcastic manner). Generally, you reach a point where if healing was key to your survival, it means the commentary should follow the lines of "Who forgot to buff?" Of course, this is more aggressive and anti-wallflower so yeah.

    2) The Idealists, aka "damn RPers"
[-]a) "I can feel the pain of all those around me--thus I cannot bear to cause harm to others, only to alleviate their woes." Of course, this means that they're ignoring their Spines/DA Scrapper teammate impaling people with poisonous spears. It also turns a little creepy if you consider Pain Domination in the reverse...
[-]b) "Medic [x]" "Doctor [x]" "[x] Nurse" "Mother [x]" "[insert druidic name here]"

    3) The Indignants, aka "noobies"
[-]a) These are the ones people remember and belittle on the boards and in regular conversation. You can't reason with them 99% of the time. Everyone has their own experiences with these.

    4) The Wife™, aka "Mind if I join?"
[-]a) TVTropes provides some good reading on this.
[-]b) Do note that this category is gender-neutral. It simply refers to the [gender noun]friend/fiance/whatever that wants to specifically help their reciprocal relation. They're likely to be less attentive/knowledgeable of playing (falling into Category 1 territory) but have their own identifiable foibles. If they get into the game, they'll leave this category and probably figure out the deeper mechanics on their own. Otherwise, they're a lost cause (and their reciprocal relation will probably be less than amused by attempts to educate).
[-]c) Beware of word usage that commonly includes "hubby". Beware.

"Most"? I believe the word you're looking for here is "all". (And I won't go to the trouble of sneak attacking you with a wall of text espousing both the cynical/pessimistic view and the philosophical view. This time. )
  2. Just assume your gun uses "ammo" in a manner similar to Mass Effect (relevant portion is the second paragraph of that section). As for why it would affect your character's ability to punch? Maybe you use the same concept to "power" your other attacks from some central battery/source, who knows.

It's really not hard to come up with explanations. Granted, your post sounds more like a... "non-serious, inflammable topic seed".
  3. You would be best off with 7 Shields and maybe 1 Electric for maximum possible resistance with obscene defense from Grant Cover/Maneuvers abuse. With 7 GCs and 8 Maneuvers, I think you would be softcapped even against Blue Tower Recluse. +77.32% off my quick Mids' check, so yeah. Add another 1.5x enhancement and you're definitely softcapped. You could probably afford to have another Electric backup.

After that: Melt Armor. And lots of it.

It's already been pretty blatant that the loudest supporters have no inkling of how the game actually plays out beyond "Scrappers can solo AVs? They must be more powerful than everybody!" without considering "750 million influence and 2,800 posts dedicated to calculating optimal DPS chains and the development of 'Arcanatime'."
But it's easier to yell and scream in absolutes and ignore the other factors.

You know what, on second thought, I welcome IOs granting mez protection. On a Taunt set's 5th bonus. +0.5 magnitude for a possible total of +1.0 on every character without a natural source. And make it a PvP set.

    * "you are an idiot"

Hot damn, some good, anonymous arguments on both sides here!
  5. Get and slot Fault as soon as possible. It'll be all you need.

    Based on your Brute:
Cold or Thermal are the best options for ELA. Cold will be the better long-term option, Thermal will make the pre-SOs, pre-Energize, pre-Tough/Weave/IOs much less painful but will be weaker in the long run (but do note: "weaker" as in "a man with $950,000,000 is poorer than another with $1,000,000,000").

I would suggest Pain Domination, Kinetics, or Sonic Resonance as being runners-up that would be a little bit rougher. Sonic Resonance will sort of plateau early and not get much stronger after Sonic Dispersion and Disruption Field but it also won't become obsolete. Pain Domination will spike early but after said spike, until it gets its late-game goodies like World of Pain, Anguishing Cry, and Painbringer, it will be one of the weakest options. Kinetics is, well, Kinetics. You can't really badmouth it except that it can be rough on the user when played well. And if you ever broaden your team on some nights, your Dead Cat© Brand Member-Seeking Device™ will be able to swat a couple out of the air very easily, so it's not exactly crucial to have your own (unless you expect good performance--PuGging is always a crapshoot).

It's more-or-less a question of how much suffering you want to impart on your third. Cold is the absolute best for self-survival and end-game performance on your existing layout. Sonic Resonance will be rough on the Corr (Dis. Field and Son. Disp. together suck endurance like nothing else), as will Kin as I've already said. Pain will be more or less indifferent (must...resist...puns...).

And for the love of all that is holy: Get and slot Fault up right away, it's not just useful for you! If you learn to love and use Fault, ELA's shortcomings will make it easier on your supporting third and make the game overall much easier. It really is that good.

As for primary... Well, I'll suggest the obligatory Sonic Attack. -Res is always nice. However, Radiation Blast can be extremely enjoyable, particularly once you turn Neutrino Bolt into a proc cannon--Neutrino Bolt giving off five numbers (regular, scourge, Apocalypse, Shield Breaker, Lady Grey, and possibly -Res from Achilles' Heel) is immensely satisfying to see, even if it's not from you. It also can be satisfying in the "I always have something I can do...and I have endurance to do it with!"

    Any suggestion?
Your team is a little lacking in AoE. I might suggest the Stalker, if they're set on playing a Stalker, go Electric Melee or Spines (although I can't attest to the strengths of the second personally, so this is just an armchair estimation). If they're not totally set on Stalker... Another Corr or Electric/Shield Brute will also do quite nicely.

The reason I'm dubious on the Stalker is that after awhile, having a more ST-oriented set will likely make the Stalker feel less powerful and more like a third wheel, particularly when an ST-focused build like an SM/ELA Brute starts to come into its own. But hey, your mileage may vary.
  7. "Healer". And the most direct translation possible: Emp/Psy with the Medicine Pool. Nothing used but the direct heals and the Rezzes.

But even then, there is literally nothing in this game that is useless that isn't directly funded by the stupidity and/or ego of the player. It isn't EQ or FFxi. There are no low level Thieves here.

*With your newly-added conditions, I present to you Kinetics/AR. Once the nature of the cones and their animations start showing up, Kinetics will become far less enjoyable.

Okay. You're either trying way too hard to be a caricature or there literally is no hope with you.

But because I love feeding the cycle...
Let's define the reverse: What do you want out of a challenge? In specific terms, no platitudes.
  10. Sacrificing mobility for Mud Pots when you'd be much better off just using tire-driven snow color for your Ice Armor toggles is unlikely to be worth the effort.
Having played both ends of the spectrum and having both a Tank and Brute with every possible Stone Armor toggle (and soft-capped for both), I can tell you it isn't worth it to run the pre-Granite for the sake of spiting Granite.

And Mud Pots is not particularly good at aggro control. It's not the worst but it certainly isn't the best that you seem to believe it to be.
  11. If you're getting mezzed through a Break Free, your average melee is going to be mezzed as well. If you can't deal with the problem in the duration of a Break Free, you're fighting the wrong mobs, your team is built poorly, you're fighting non-solo content solo, or you're incompetent. And those options are not mutually exclusive.

The mobs are there to take advantage of your weaknesses and kill you. If you want to fight comm officers, just say so (oh wait, their gun can stun you, they're too tough and dangerous). If it's not mezzes, it'll be horrendous debuffs on you or buffs on themselves. And in fact, we have mobs that are mez-light and buff/debuff-heavy, they're called the Vanguard Sword and it seems a lot of people whine about them being too hard already.
  12. Recluse doesn't have Repel (in regards to the "STF" claims). He has KB of a fairly high magnitude but he does not actually have Repel. Additionally, because of the way KB is calculated, you're getting Purple Patch enhancing the magnitude of his KB. Effectively, unless you have KB resistance (which is what I think Dark and Fire should have at about 50%, at least on Tanks--the lack of protection is fine, it's their "thing"), he will throw you around. Case-in-point: If you run just Granite but not Rooted, the KB protection alone isn't enough to keep you covered and he will toss you around.

*In fact, I can only think of maybe one or two instances in the game where a mob actively uses Repel against you (non-AE, of course). Any other times are explosives or whatever and they're amusing to watch as they send people to the four winds.

A number of my compatriots that play Sonic Res. have taken to a habit of making their buffs obtrusive. Gone are the days of green number blindness when you can have green Disruption Field!
  14. Warmace or Battle Axe can do some frightening things and they are equipped with both good AoE and ST attack chains. And if your fiance can get you damage-capped regularly, Crowd Control or Pendulum will make you laugh at the puny Foot Stomp.
  15. If your team needs more than one Kinetics, the one you have isn't qualified to make your team "super".

That said, a team of 4 competent players is basically incapable of failing at anything but the most dense encounters (Patrons, LRSF Freedom Phalanx, etc.). I'd recommend having people figure out what exactly they want to play (melee, range, de/buff, whatever) and then build your core team around that. If you can build that "core" team, best if it is self-sufficient with just 3 people, you will never care what anyone adds to the team.

Or you know, the German "über" meaning something along the lines of "over" or "above" (which to be honest, makes the Internet usage still pretty faithful).
  17. Blaster: */MM is probably the strongest for soloing with survivability and damage. Primary is a wash for soloing or duoing (assuming you're not going to be doing +4/x8 maps), so just pick whatever you want the most pewpewpew from at the time.

Scrapper: "Not Fire"/Regen or "Not Fire"/WP. Those two secondaries I'd say have the best return for less investment (while also having great return with great investment). For the primary, if you really want to be unstoppable, either Katana or Broadsword and spam the hell out of Divine Avalanche/Parry.

Everything but this. For some silly reason, I always think MA/SR as the iconic Scrapper, probably because of the picture the book came with for the "default" Scrapper look and characters like Batman. Of course, that's assuming if Batman were constrained to this univers--who am I kidding? Batman is still Batman/Batman/Batarangs.

    1) Tanks, Controllers, Scrappers, Blasters, Corruptors, Brutes, VEATs (heh, I find it rather amusing that I don't actually have a single respectable Defender...I should work on that). No particular meaning to the order.

    2) None, really. My first 50 was an Ice/SS Tank (that took me...4 years to get, only about 200 hours of actual playtime though) but it was hardly my most played toon. It didn't really become my favorite either because immediately after that, I leveled up a Stone/Stone in about 1/4 the total play time. If I could label any hero my favorite, it would easily be that one because it represents "everything in excess". Villain-side...probably my Elec/Stone Brute because it takes the concept of the Stone/Stone...and turns it into a death machine that also has higher defense.

    3) Again, no particular way for me to pin it down. I like to make builds that have quirks. As in, my "no travel power" Stone/Stone with positive recharge, soft-capped defense, and insane run speed while in Granite, or my AR/EM Blaster with 168.4' range Full Auto and 641.3' range Teleport.
But, if I were to really try and narrow it down, the one I'm most proud of would be my Electric/Stone Brute. It has a lot of amusing slotting choices that make it significantly stronger than any other equivalent Brute out there and it has an exploding Teleport, which, of course, is impossible to not love.

*And if you're curious, 57 months as of yesterday. Although I would be at 62 or 63 if I hadn't taken a couple of months off to try other games.

    No, it won't.

In-game, it'll float around the global channels, poking its head in, asking "sup gaiz?" for a few weeks to a couple of months, then go to a predictable cycle like the accuracy nerfcalls. Occasionally, there will be a flare-up when you get people that are convinced they're right and "their friend" has had crap drops or some other silliness, kind of like the random people that are still 100% certain each server has its own market. These latter ones are usually reserved for "Legendary PuGs" so the effect should be localized (of course, this doesn't account for people that get confused by wrong information and ask about it, possibly sparking a debate).

On the forums? It'll probably follow a cycle like the accuracy nerfcalls (after this thread dies down), with a possible wildcard response coming from ignorant people who notice/wonder why their drop rates changed. After that, it just will be in danger of necroequinophiliacs and being used as a localized Internet meme. And in fact, it already is in use.
  21. Goodie. Another "[x] AT IS WORTHLESS TO TEAMS WITH SIDE-SWITCHING!" thread.

No. Brutes have a vested interest in having an instantaneous control of aggro, moreso than any Scrapper. I'd be rather displeased if say, my EM/EA suddenly had a useless Taunt.
  22. Depending on what the variable is affecting, then yes, it could do that. It could do anything. We don't know what the code does exactly, other than that the random variable effects a change in the drop rate, resulting in a reported negative effect.
  23. Granite is a special problem. What it actually does is swap your character's model out for an NPC, specifically, the Devouring Earth's (wait for it....come on....stay on target....here it comes....it's almost....ready................) Granite. Due to the mechanics involved in that, BAB can't just outright modify the power to be customizable, hence why there is an informal poll he made with a thread under A&P General, since the power would have to change fairly dramatically to get any sort of customization.
