  1. Recharge of a power doesn't start until it is done casting. So even with a ~1 sec rech on shriek it means you will be doing nothing for 1 sec while it recharges.

shriek>scream>shriek is a solid chain for traps/son where you throw in traps powers during the gap.

There is no reason to go /scorp app on a traps defender becasuse it is so easy to get your positional def up to 45%. That will give you a lot more protection and allow you to take out a lot more enemies than s/l/e def. Though to be honest the route you have taken is fine for a LOT of AV's.

Personally I'm a fan of /dark app. Even against a single target soul drain adds a lot of damage with high recharge. That said, I do like my spider bot on my fire/traps corr, but if you are picking an epic set specifically for the pet I'd go with soul for the fortunata mistress.

    Specifically on your first build:
6 slotting basilisk is pretty pointless. 4 of it and 2 others is better
6 slotting adjusted targetting in aim is pointless as well. Stop at 5
The run speed bonuses you have in a couple powers are not needed. You won't have any issue outpacing your FFG or epic pet as it is.
The procs you have in veng won't do anyting unless you use veng.
    acid mortar is not autohit.
6 pieces of doctored wounds is pretty useless as well.
    You have no kb protection

Ya I figured they would have introduced tiers of pvp IO's just like they did in pve. That way you'd more frequently earn some sort of trinket.

Such a system would allow them to do things like tripling the drop rate on your bounty target and tripling the drop rate while one side possess RV and it would actually result in a tangible difference. Cause right now the pve events that occur in pvp zones are beyond pointless from a pvp perspective.

That said, I don't think any reward system would help pull pve'ers into pvp anymore. Pre i13 where the two systems were essentially the same (just one was on speed and awesome) a solid reward system could have had the potential to get pve'ers away from static and mindless spawns. But the new ruleset is so divergent from pve that you really have to want to pvp in the first place to be willing to take on learning it. That greatly reduces the chance of pve to pvp conversions.

    -DM/Shield

*/Fire, while a lot better than before still trails way behind /shield in damage potential. The nice thing is that /fire can add that damage whether there is a group around or not. However, shield can ALWAYS add that kind of damage just by fighting, whereas /fire even under extreme recharge has a tiny uptime on FE.
  4. Mac is correct. If you had a method of leveraging old burn it did more damage and would often kill most of a spawn in conjunction with footstomp and fireball.

New burn is better if you lack tools to keep things in it.

Because less people had aoe immobs/kb/stuns compared to those that did, new burn is overall better for more people.

I know when I tried it during beta on my fire/ss/pyre I wasn't impressed with it because it was a noticeable drop in damage against large spawns. However, I imagine it would be a great benefit for toons like dm/fire that lack aoe damage and can now use it as often as they like.

Hence the fruitlessness, as with all those varied needs and requirements, it boils down to "mine gets more out of it!" "no mine!"

I can do without such discussions.

If you can do without such discussions then you shouldn't enter into one saying things like examining which AT's benefit more than others from IO's is fruitless.

That is demonstratively incorrect. Everyone benefits from IO's, not everyone benefits equally. If someone cares about IO'ing for performance they probably care about how well their choice will respond to the investment (time/inf/effort) they put in to it. If they don't care about IO's then they probably don't care about how much their toon benefits.

You not caring that blasters don't benefit as much from IO's as some other AT's does not equate to understanding IO's as being fruitless.

@Cbeet, mez resistance is ok to slot for. The only problem with it is that it doesn't actually do much given the investment (compared to rech or def). Part of the reason is because of how mez duration works and part of the reason is because it isn't as readily available as some other bonuses.

Blasters also hit 1446hp with just accolades, which can be seen a bonus are a negative depending. They are really easy to hit their hp cap with so not much effort needs to be put into the goal, but that also means that the difference between a baseline blaster and a capped one is very small compared to every other AT.

I'm not a game developer so I have no clue as to whether they know what they're doing. Their game is over six years old and showing promise.... they stilll have their jobs... they still get my $15 bucks a month... so to me it's safe to say they aren't ******* things up that bad. I'm certain you could do it better.... but not really.
I think it is safe to say that the success of this game has had nothing to do with their blunders in pvp. Feel free to counter though.

Their pvp follies have been a long standing joke in the MMO world and if this game were larger would have started to inch up the "NGE" list in terms of the amount of fail on the developers behalf.

    Quote:
You spoke of the goal of PvP and how there is only one... specifically kill count. While very true in the arena, one's kill count in a zone isn't rewarded or recorded. One's defeat in a zone isn't debt'ed or a significant loss in any way. Therefore you cannot say that is the goal of PvP as a whole. A high kill count is simply an objective of many PvPers. The 'highest kill count' can be a goal in PvP... but as I already mentioned... only applies to arena where a match win is dependant on it.
Well now then you didn't read what I said. I said kill count AND continually seeking victory by killing the weakest links are the only goals in the pvp of this game.

Those go hand in hand in the arena. In zone the latter takes precedence. In both cases you end up not cycling through all the targets and are very frequently bumping into the 5 min timer reset on rolling an IO.

Most definitely and I never suggested otherwise. Just stating what I heard from a lot of friends at the time. Personally I don't really care that much about costumes as long as I can more or less make what I set out to make. Which I generally can. At the same time I know the costume creator is this games best asset, so I understand those that want it to be continually and frequently improved upon.

Regarding the price to size aspect of GR I know personally I would have rather paid more and gotten more. I understand not everyone feels that way, but I do because we seem to more or less get a finite number of updates. Paying less and getting less is logical, but it doesn't seem to translate to an increase in frequency.

To clarify I look at the dance emote pack. I (and most others) want to give PS our money for updates and we look forward to the MT packs because they have features we can gobble up in addition to the normal updates. They only come a handful of times a year so when the dance pack largely sucked it isn't a matter of just not buying it because we now have to wait several months for the next booster to come out.

You get used to things being a certain way in the Pavlovian sense very quickly. MT packs satisfy x needs and major paid game updates satisfy x needs. When they don't the fact that it cost $2 less and $10+ less respectively, doesn't really matter to my satisfaction level. It matters to my valuation of the product, but at the end of the day I"m still left wanting (a lot) more and their being no way to get it from this product.

If GR eventually gets the things it was missing due to the cheaper cost that will be great. At such a time that will add great value to the package if/when they eventually show up.

From what I just read from Savage this isn't the case and was just a misinformed rumor. The IDF pieces seem to be like the other npc pieces in that they will 'eventually' make it into the creator.

Sometimes I'm torn with their information delivery techniques. I like hearing what they have planned, but they always seem to announce it too early because the actual execution is way way down the road.

I dare you to explain how ANY of the activities that go on in the pvp zones are pvp related.

    Shivs, Nukes, Hotspots, Turrets+Av's...

Those are ALL pve aspects tacked on to pvp because the developers have no clue how to design pvp.

Even if we pretend those zone activities are magically pvp based as opposed to pve based then you would STILL go after the weakest link in the ones that potentially involve some pvp interaction. For example you are going to attack the push over that is glowing as opposed to the glowing person surrounded by a bunch of team mates if you want to steal some shiv bits. Same goes for Missile code pieces.

PvP is by definition a competitive environment. Like any competition you find the weak point in your opposition and you take advantage of it. You aren't being a 'jerk' if your power forward is 6'6 going against a 5'9 defender. You capitalize on the opportunity until they are able to stop you.

You are a jerk if you keep tripping him when the ref isn't looking, just like if you tp people into geometry locks and stuff like that.

Not everyone gets to touch the ball...nor should they. Competition isn't for everyone though whether it be games, sports, work, or life. Some people are just better at not being good at anything.

The wedding and magic packs have the best selection of snazzy costume parts from my point of view with science coming in third. But the temp powers like Ninja Run or gender bending/height changing edit modes frost me more than the costume parts found there.

However I can't complain when an honest to God expansion like GR gets costumes. Just like CoV did way back when, you don't own it, you don't get access to them. And the Mac, Good Vs Evil, Collectors editions costumes were marketing perks for buying those editions, a carrot for newcomers. Since buying and applying those editions also granted another month of subscription it was a minor price to pay for those "unique" pieces for existing players.
In all fairness we got like eleventybillion costume bits with CoV (granted they were villain only for a while), while GR had an insignificant number in comparison.

I know a lot of people that were hoping for a closet update similar to CoV with GR and it unfortunately didn't happen. Boosters and existing options aside there are still a ton of things they could add to the costume creator without having to dip into the more obscure (and likely difficult to implement) areas that often get talked about.

It's certainly a theory you have. Minimal research would probably convince you otherwise, but only if you did it yourself. Sort of a horse to water kind of thing.

I'm not unhappy about the company tooting it's horn, if you actually read what I wrote I suggested how they could do it even BETTER once I was informed that they were only taking a snippet of the available timeframe since GR has launched. 12. There is only one pvp goal in this game and it is achieved through kill count.

It's not mean or being a jerk to score the highest kill count through the most efficient means available.

Then again, I'm not really a fan of everyone getting trophies at events just because they participated and maybe you are? And I certainly wouldn't be in favor of it happening at 14 and over tournaments, which is roughly the age of what is supposed to be the youngest people playing this game.

For Scrappers and Blasters, IOs are capable of doing much the same thing: making them more survivable and able to do more damage. Arguably more than they should have without support (or even at all), but it's too late to make def caps be different depending on the AT, if that's the way Castle still thinks about it.
It's only fruitless in the same way that it is fruitless to argue what kind of car to purchase with the intention of tuning it. Some cars are a lot more receptive to after market modifications because they are overbuilt in stock form and can handle serious upgrades without having to rework internals.

Which is to say, it's not fruitless at all if you care about IO'ing things.

Come on, guys. If you want PvP IOs, PvP!

I know the current PvP system ain't perfect, but someone's obviously doing it because there are PvP recipes on the market.
Except you don't actually earn many drops from pvp'ing in the most efficient manner. If your goal is to win (which is the ONLY goal in this pvp system and it is ONLY achievable through pc defeat) then you end up greatly reducing the number of IO drop opportunities because you are strictly stuck with it rolling once every 5 min.

If you cycle through targets so that everyone gets a chance to die then you increase the number of IO drop opportunities because the system only rolls against rep valid targets and the rep timer takes 5 min to reset after you kill target 1. Because the only pvp activity in this game is kill count the most efficient way to win is to attack the weakest link over and over again, but that guts your drops.

So sure, more people pvp'ing would of course increase supply, but that doesn't excuse the fact that the reward system is farked up and doesn't actually mesh with the pvp system.

Now if they had alternate pvp activities like capture the flag or king of the hill, or sieging (I guess base raids would fit this description if they were enabled) you might see target rotation happening more often at which point even with the low level of pvp currently happening more drops would occur.

    Why A Blaster?

Ya I chose to use shield as an example simply because it is so receptive to IO'ing and because so much of the conversation has focused on scrappers. While shield is a clear demonstration of the affect IO's can have it certainly isn't unique to that secondary among scrappers. With the addiiton of powers like shadow meld sets like fire, elec, and dark armor that typically have issues reaching high defense levels can now gain tremendous power through recharge. Recharge was always highly desirable for those secondaries due to the power of their heals and now they gain a huge advantage in survivability (if they so choose) without having to sacrifice any build parameters or refocus IO bonuses.

I could have just as easily picked something like dominators because when it comes to solo performance gained through IO's they stand head and shoulders above everyone else. Controllers are another example that tends to gain a lot more from them than blasters certainly (and most AT's for that matter).

IME the AT's that benefit most from IO's are ones that are very receptive to recharge (ie doms), the way IO's let you slot the equivalent of over 10 SO's into a single power (trollers), and the AT's that can easily reach high mitigation levels with minimal build sacrifice (scrappers, brutes). There are certainly specific combos within the other ATs that are also very receptive, but imo those 4 AT's seem to respond the best (across their entirety) when it comes to IO'ing.

They are clearly insulting, whereas a term like fanboy is only insulting if you feel it carries negative connotation.

Honestly if you don't think he threw the first stone then you are cherry picking facts and minimalizing things that were said to make your position seem stronger. That's just dumb.

It sounds a lot higher than it actually is. It's been a good 7 weeks since release. If we estimate subs at around 75K (could be higher, could be lower, irrelevant for now). That works out to be 10 toons per account over 49 days, or 0.2 characters logging in to GR per account each day. For a game founded on alts and given the short level range of GR that really isn't that high.

It's a marketing number, nothing more.

That said, i19 looks pretty solid.
  21. I understoond the OP pretty easily. He wants more free costume pieces and feels that custom weapons - similar to auras and coloring attacks - don't really fit that description. He acknowledged animated tails as well. Personally I'd say tails do fit the description of costume pieces, they just largely suck (imo).

I don't think he is necessarily wrong in his opinion and for the record he was attacked for his position LONG before he retaliated with the fanboy term. Granted the occasions where Lemur acts as anything other than a D-bag are pretty rare, so I guess the OP should have just know that and ignored it like everyone else piling on him has done...

FWIW I'd like to see more costume pieces (my definition is similar to the OP's of what that entails). It sounds like a surge of them will be coming eventually when they start transferring npc options to pc's. As usual though it is down the road and 'wait just a little longer for us to deliver'. Satisfactory when it shows up though, but irrelevant to what is being stated because what happens in a few months or longer has no bearing on what is available now.

tl;dr version, the best feature this game offers is the barbie closet and I'm in favor of them continuing to add to it frequently just like barbie does. IMO costume bits should be added monthly in a steady stream. One should never feel like they are running out of new shoes to try on.

I can't speak for everyone but my blasters have between 5% and 10.4% base def (one runs weave+cj+steadfast, the other has no weave).

For me to go with a single positional type of def (ie range) I have to dedicate a tremendous portion of my IO's to that goal. Few of the ranged boosting sets bring such valuable additions as global rech and damage procs.

If I focus on s/l def the task is much easier due to 2 epic armors offering 10.5 def (base). So that route gives me a bit more flexibly to pick up some sets that boost global rech and have damage procs.

Conversely, my bs/shield has 32% def w/ weave, cj, steadfast and slotting (as well as ~38% global rech from slotting them). As a result I need to focus much less with my set IO's on adding additional def. In this case I need 13% def from IO's to softcap compared to 35-40% for the positionally focused blaster. What that means is once I'm done upping my def I can focus on procs, recharge, and anything else I desire.

At the end of the day I can't add much in the way of +damage through IO's, but the affect of being able to increase global recharge and add procs with much more ease compared to the blaster(s) ends up pretty dramatically boosting damage. Probably far more than if you could get like +80-100% damage buff through IO's, but had to give up the +rech and procs.

Basically a softcapped blaster (through individual build) isn't nearly as survivable as a softcapped any other AT because they all have more powerful tools to begin with and we all understand the multiplicative nature of layering protection. So in actuality the survivability gap widens as opposed to narrows like is being suggested. While on the other hand the ability to pack gobs of +rech and procs compared to most blasters (assuming everyone is aiming for def first) does do a decent job of narrowing the damage gap between blasters and other AT's.

There is little doubt that blasters benefit a huge amount from IO's, but pretty much everyone else can benefit more. Whether the game scales well enough for the other AT's to flex their more powerful muscles is a different matter...It can and does, but not everyone takes advantage of it, or wants to.

  25. Every tanker is stuck taking their t1 attack. If you are solo'ing of fighting something that will survive more than a few seconds in a team most low to mid level tankers need to use their t1 to have a saturated attack chain.

Many of the t1 attacks end up being phased out of optimal attack chains in later levels, but that is unlikely the case anymore as the t2 that generally would be subbed in to place rarely has a better enough dpa to make up for the -res boosting all your attacks and procs.

The net gain isn't as good as it would be if they had tagged bruising to work on both the t1 and 2 attacks (but obviously non-stacking as it is now), but it is still a gain in most situations barring those where you kill the target before needing to cycle to a low damage attack.

The addition of gloom (plus apoc) and bruising now being added to damage focused tanks should result in them seeing a sizable increase in their dps and even medium time frame burst.
