    Power Combos!!!

Just a fun idea I had when posting in another thread. I know it's been suggested before (I remember reading it once but it had to be pretty long ago).

Anyway, with the advent of new content with bosses that have 'signature attacks', so this is a 'kinda signature attack' by means of combining two of your powers together. And just like when bosses like Odysseus uses his Fist of Vulcan attack, your signature attack too has Red Letters that pop up over your head when used.

    -Specifics-

Content Unlock: I suppose, just like the cape and auras, there be a contact and a set of missions that unlocks this option at around lvl 32 (the level you gain access to your primary tier 9 power). I think this should be reliant on your origin, so Mutant/Magic would have a certain arc, Natural/Tech could have another, Magic/Natural, Science/Tech, Science/Mutant and so on. So you'd have 2 branching options. Why? For more content!
note: I think the option of 2 combination powers (so you could run both arcs to unlock or just run 1 twice) rather than just 1 wouldn't too over-the-top. But I could imagine the red-letter spam might get grating so perhaps the option to block other's and perhaps your own too.

Customization: First of all, some UI that lets you access this option would be needed but overall, it'd be pretty simple. You choose a 'Dominant' main power and a 'Recessive' additive power. You would use the animation from the dominant power while the effect of both dominant and recessive would simply be added, their custom colored FX and all. Lastly, the naming. You have a spot to type out either the name of the signature attack (Acid Monsoon!) or some words describing what you're doing (~Draws in Souls~) which would pop up over your head when you activate it. You could change the words whenever but to change the combo would require a respec.

Balance: Well, this probably isn't. But besides that, this gives you the option of activating 2 powers in the time of 1 animation. That said, it's not a free shot to tack on Total Focus to Brawl for a 1sec animation. Oh no...
-The activation time would be 'overlapped' in that, it'd be like if both powers activated together. In simpler terms, the resulting combination would take the longest activation of the two even if the dominant animation is shorter (you'll just be 'paused' while it's finishing). There'd also be a short 'pause' at the beginning while the words pop up. This is for balance concerns...
-Endurance would take the enhanced endurance of the more costly power of the two while discarding the cheaper. So, you *do* get off cheaper but not scott free.
-Recharge...To use the combination, both powers in the combo must be recharged before activating the combo button. Just to clarify, you can still use either power separately, so no loosing options. Once the combo button is used, it causes both powers to be used simultaneously.
-Clicks only. For balance purposes, this is combining the activation of clicks, not toggles, passives, toggles/passives, toggles/clicks, etc.

    -Examples Combos-

-Force Field: Deflection Field + Insulation Shield = Absolute Defense! (Your buffer can use this combo to buff faster and cheaper!)
-Assault Rifle: Slug + Sniper Rifle = Steady Shot
(You don't have a heavy hitting tier 3, but you can combine your highest damaging regular shot with the snipe for a 'non-interrupt' shot...but it'll take a while to go off)
-Ice Melee/Fire Armor: Ice Slick + Burn = Hot Ice

There's some other interesting combos that are more for convenience rather than power/efficiency that I can think of, like combining regular ammo with piercing shot so you always get the -res debuff, but interested to see what combos others can think of that'd break this system.

Overall, I find, for support characters, this would help them speed up the process to get more done faster. For crowd control, you could combine AoE and ST control to kill 2 birds with one stone (faster control = less getting hit). For damage dealers, this gives players that choose lots of attacks (I certainly do that on many of mine) vs fewer + recharge bonuses more bang for their buck. For the conceptualists, doing outliers like combining controls/debuffs with attacks or those that pick up concept pools could fill out out their look somewhat.

another note: It'd be cool if the dominant power's animation played normally for the character while you've got the option for a 'phantom you' to animate the other at the same time.
  2. Quicksand: I slow them fools so bad, I send them running *away*

Fire Breath: Just on one character, though. Make a Dragon, give him Fire Breath, unlock Mako patron and his breath really can kill

    Blazing Bolt: HEAT BEAM GO!!

Assassin's Shock: Chidori!! (no, I don't have any Sasuke-homage characters but I still like saying it when I use it)

Gale (+Aim): The alpha is MINE

I have more, but they're kind of combos of two or more powers rather than a single power...but they combine for a kinda bigger power.

Kinda makes me wish there was a Power combo system that let you combine two powers to execute them together. Oh, and an option to 'name' the combo which would pop up in Red Letters above your head. Man, that sounds interesting

That's not really the problem. I have a Fire brute who only uses the sword powers. Technically, there *is no* redraw. Once you click the power, the animation begins while, at the same time, the weapon appears in the hand. If you decided to pick the same sword/color, you won't even tell it's ever put away/redrawn.

What *is* the problem with making the weapon part of the animation is...you'd need to make separate animations for *every* weapon. There wouldn't be any 'Ice Slash's animation but with a mace', you'd have to choose from the predetermined options which may only be 2 different weapons with light/dark options.

So, not only would they have to take whatever weapon animations and redo them to incorporate *an* elemental weapon, but also for every weapon option they'd have to make *another* animation *AND* a light/dark/colorable animation to go with them.

I am not a terribly experienced Stalker player, but I suspect that AS accounts for the overwhelming majority of threat a stalker generates.
    Not likely.

Assassin's Strike is listed as not to notify mobs nor does it have any threat modifying attributes like other pool powers. Furthermore, Demoralize is a temp power granted to the target which is used by the caster (the victim of AS) and affects friends. No threat is generated toward the Stalker when demoralize is activated. I can attest to this as I have AS foes with some of their backs turned. I have kills foes with it and sometimes none of the others notice. I have hit a target with AS, caused some of the foes to shiver in fear but still not take notice of me.

The threat generated by AS is most likely attributed to the amount of damage it deals (if it's overkill or not) vs the instant it takes effect. I.e. it generates much more threat when a successful Assassination occurs than, say, a regular Charged Brawl, Soaring Dragon or any other non-crit/non-taunting ST attacks because AS will do x times more damage than those in that instance. So if AS did 2.5x the amount of dmg as Soaring Dragon, AS would still generate way more threat than even 3 Soaring Dragons because threat decays between each of those attacks.

Yeah, maybe you need to just use an inherent power to light your oil slick then.

What about self destruct? That does fire damage too. Try that. Go. Go do that now...

    Well just to recap:

-After Enhancement Diversification, players complained about not feeling 'Super'.

-Devs give us IOs and Incarnate stuff. Now you're super.

-And here we are, asking for harder content, not through challenge, but through *taking away* the power we work hard to obtain via resisting us through means of the purple patch.

I think the point beyond that is asking for a higher level cap and undoing ED.

And yet what's being requested makes little sense.

You gain the alpha slots to become powerful. You become powerful by minimilizing the foes either through sheer damage or sheer mitigation. Asking to make the regular game *harder* will simply make us *weaker* by comparison. What is being requested isn't presenting us with more powerful foes to vanquish, it's just giving us the same stupid predictable AI that underminds your power by means of the purple patch.

Now I can get behind foes that have unbelievable power that you need to use tactics to win, but just asking for foes that have more HP, higher damage, resist my debuffs/controls and slice through a portion of my defense...that's just dumb...>_>

Here's an idea: How about the ability to turn off all +lvl buffs from alpha slots? You can keep the actual buff/powers but the enemies will show as normal level.
  9. OP,
You unlock that fire DoT interface slot yet?

As for IOs, the game is not supposed to be balanced around IOs, and a chance for energy damage is not a reliable way of lighting it. Or to but it antoher way, they should disallwo Ninja Runa nd people who don't want travel powers can slot Gift of the Ancients Run Speed IOs.
Honestly, I don't care one way or the other. But the OP basically said 'Do what I say or I'm quitting!"

I don't care what you're asking for, but being a whiny git will certainly get me to play devil's advocate.
  11. If it's popular, then that means oil slick has a large likelyhood of being lit.

But, IINM, you can slot and unslot your incarnate slots. Put on your damage proc when you're not able to rely on others to light it, and slot something else when your excuse is actually the case.

Thank you, have a nice day!
  12. iTrials, what is that? Incarnate trials?

Why not slot your interface with the fire damage ability? Then any damage power can do fire damage.

Villain Morality - Highlighting what I'd change in yellow.

    The Dagger of Caernoz
    Alignment Mission

You've come across a box containing an old dagger with fiery sigils lining the blade. Inside the box is a note addressed to a hero named Desdemona.

'Your actions have convinced us that you truly wish to seal away Lord Caernoz rather than bind him to your will. We now send you the true dagger, not the replica you believe will seal him away. Only with this can you hold power over that infernal being. We believe you will use this power for the good of all. Know that you are trusted amongst us. - The Sightless Court'

Recently, Desdemona has been causing problems amongst the elite of the Rogue Isles as she tracks down some 'nameless being'. You remember hearing that she was last seen heading off to a Circle of Thorns temple to perform some ritual or another.

Now you know what she has planned, and it seems she's woefully unprepared. What better time to pay her back for all the trouble that turn-coat has been causing than when she's about to get her rear kicked royally? On the other hand, you're the one with the dagger, not her. She'd likely pay a pretty penny to get her hands on this at the moment she needs it the most.

"You remember hearing" would work equally as well (IMO) without assuming I what I remember to "It has been rumored"

As far as the final paragraph...

If that is indeed what she has planned, she could be woefully unprepared. There may not be a better time to pay her back for all the trouble that turn-coat has been causing than when she's about to get her rear kicked royally.

Simply stating facts or making suggestions is fine... stating what I remember or what I know... really isn't. That's my 2 cents.
Honestly, the difference in impact is so minimal and trivial, why bother?

As for the last sentence, why is it infringing to say 'Now you know'?

Seriously, you've got a note in your hands right there *telling* you what she's doing. It *is* stating a fact that 'You now know' because it's written.

I have no issue with the rumored part. Stating how one might remember by offering options like 'rumors' or 'sources/contacts' probably offers a better feel to the narrative but this is merely exchanging 3-4 words. Not really anything to write home about.

I'm personally mostly interested in convenience. The other day I finished my tenth Hero Tip in Founders' Falls. I now needed to kill stuff to get a Morality mission, so my instinct was to tune into the Scanner. Only because this was a level 41 character, I couldn't. I had to trapse all the way to the station to get to Talos Island to get to the Ferry to get to Peregrine Island, because the game wouldn't let me get level 40+ missions in Founders' Falls. Even though I had just come out of a level 41 mission in Founders' Falls.

I understand why this is, or think I do - each zone has its own Scanner/Paper contact with a different set of missions - but if Tips work from anywhere, I see no reason why Papers and Scanners shouldn't.
Because paper/scanner missions work to add to the detective/broker bar in that area. If you can just do scanners in Atlas, where does the credit go for doing those missions when Atlas doesn't even have a police band contact?

Or if you're in Talos but only lvl 10, the credit goes to Detective Basins/Cricket(sp?) even though you shouldn't be getting their safeguards until lvl 20+?

As for convenience, why didn't you just use an oro portal? Besides that, you can defeat *any* enemy and have a tip drop. They don't need to be worth xp and you just need to be over lvl 20.

    Badges from the mayhem missions?

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the option to pick up radio or paper missions from any zone your level or under but there'd probably need to be an auto-exemp feature so that you can still actually play the lower safeguard/mayhems. At least then, you wouldn't feel 'rushed' to get those done or 'forced' to put a hold on your contacts so you don't out level the missions.

I'd say pretty much every villain I level needs to cut off xp some time in the 20-35 range so they can pick up the mayhems or choose the right contacts they want from the brokers.
  17. Wow, now you're just being a total *** >_>

"This is going to be the toughest decision you've made all night."

But rewrote it on "Final" as:
"This could be the toughest challenge you faced all night."

The first would come off to me (a player) as a definite and you know what's challenging to me. The second, I feel is more like an outside source is trying to understand me and doesn't assume what's challenging to me.

    Wordplay can be huge.

    PEACE! (and happy gaming...)
This is the general gist of how I wrote the extras in my (only) AE arc. In the arc, you're suppose to be working with a mercenary group of animal-hybrid members and basically they're sending you on a hunt to take down a mark. Generally, they accept only hybrids too so you're expected to track like an animal would (scent, hearing, etc) but then there's also extra text like 'but with some digging, there's also some files of an ex-member tracking the same mark yadda yadda yadda' (I haven't actually looked at the arc in over a year so it's probably broken by now >_>). I guess it's not really the same but I tried to keep how a character gets the trail ambiguous.

"Venture gave many arcs 4- and 5-star ratings," is similar to things like, "We have old cars that are battery- and steam-powered." Or, "The orbital laser cannon has both high- and low-power settings."
Lol, I'm pretty sure I *understood* what she meant. Context clues, ya know?

Besides that, if you actually look carefully at her post, the suspended hyphen was left hanging. It was "4- and 5- starred" rather than "4- and 5-starred" which was what I was jokingly commenting about.

Those aren't good enough reasons for your character to do what they're going to do?
Well sure, but then you start running into the problem of 'dry writing'. If we were reporting this as an unbiased source of information like a news publication or for simply referential purposes, stating just the facts and nothing more, is perfectly good.

But this is creative writing. You're telling more than events, you're captivating the reader. Not saying the in-game stuff all does this or that you need to dictate what the reader is feeling all the time to ever emote, but something needs to be said to make one care about what you're reading.

  21. For once, I hoped you'd start a thread with a linear paragraph >_>
  22. Uh, Sam, first person narrative really can't be used since the point of view of this mode can and does change, i.e. the one narrating can switch from the character (in the example, your character looking into Feymouth's case) or the example (in the example, maybe Feymouth making a statement on the news). When first person is used, the text is usually colored differently (indicating its a letter or what is being heard over a news report) but should not be relied upon simply because it'd be confusing.

Second person narrative is more concise in that, it will always refer to 'whomever it concerns'. There's a reason this mode is used for things like role-playing, self-help and how-tos.

    Tray Management

I think I have the weirdest set-up of anyone. Since I set it up so my movement is controlled by the Numpad (blame my first MMO as a kid, FFXI. Seriously, what the hell, FFXI!? No customizable controls? ****** *******....) so turn left is Num4, right is Num6, forward is Num8, etc. Strafe is the arrow keys (used by the thumb), jump is Num0, down flight is Num5...

My other hand is my powers hand. I either use the mouse to click powers manually or use 1-0 with this hand. However, it awkward to use something like Alt/Ctrl+8 so anything between 6-0 on tray 2 and 3 are mapped to other keys.

On tray 3, powers 7-0 are mapped to NumLock, Num/, Num* and Num-. Tilde is power 1 in this tray and 2-6 are Ctrl+1-5.

On tray 2, powers 6-9 are mapped to Alt+ the above with power 0 being mapped to Num+. So Alt+1-5 are the first 5 slots.

Which powers go where is variable by character. But any self-click used the most often always goes into Num+ (usually mez protection clicks or click heals), Ninja Run/Beast Run always goes in Num-, toggles go in 8,9 and 0, and any other clicks go wherever I enjoy placing them for that character ^_^

It usually gives me around *counts on fingers* around 30 easy access key press combinations if I ever have that many powers I just need access to (which is never, so far).

I always hear how much trouble people have playing stalkers and getting AS off, but it's like child's play in most any situation with my ability to move and click powers using separate hands.
