Oh, and as for their level, it is increasing over time. The first one is 10-20, the second one is 20-30, and the new one is 30-40. If you're higher than the maximum, you are exemped down to it for the duration.
    Appreciate the on point response.

Last question - can I pick up these missions from some nice central locale like FOrt Trident by chance?

Last comment (yeah right) - Is it me or is information on these things a little scattered and scarce? It just seems like some of these basic things would be clearly listed with its "news entry" or with its "paragon market" entry.
  2. I can't believe you have/take the time to recap this. Thanks.

Was going to suggest you incorporate "coffee talk" or whatever show moniker they are pushing (via facebook anyway) into your subject going forward - as I didn't recognize that this post (as a first time viewer) was about the ustream event today.

So this was my question, and i was crushed, confused and refueled.

I'll save this for another thread - but man this quick hand of doom answer actually left me with far more questions and concerns. ("Tried" it on NPC's? Um... it's in full force on a variety of NPC's as we speak!)

    Anyway, not done pursuing.

I'm not opposed, I didn't even use the word "argue". I think it's just kind of a creative writing 101 thing coupled with my personal moving experience that created a reaction in me to your response.

This aside I think I did a decent job offering some reasons as to why things are the way they are (space, not what a bio is intended for, significant percentage not using bio's) and then went on to provide some ideas for how a writer can express themselves beyond the 1024 words (independant website, social media page, request a new paid CoH feature, etc).

    Longer Bios

Kind of a horrible rebuttal. I never learned how much junk I had until I moved into a house without a basement. Trimmed the fat, punted the excess baggage and now I'm lean and mean baby, lean and mean.

Creatively movie trailers are short by design. Functionally Youtube's 10 minute max serves an important space saving purpose. I think these are decent analogies and probably both factors in the bio limitations.

As my comment started - I am sure if they look at the data they'd see that only 1% of the characters created in game have a bio at all - heck they might even consider shortening the max length at that point.

I think the bio was intended for a tight and polished teaser - a "bio" if you will. So maybe a new feature is really what should be under discussion here. Like a bit of dedicated server space on CoH per account (VIP?) that can be used for something like a facebook profile for your hero. Wait - facebook has character limits too. Well you get the drift.

Thinking further, If I really had a story I needed to tell (or keep to myself?) that bad, I would take the iniative and put up a webpage as someone else mentioned. Sites are affordable and accesible now-a-days so that shouldn't be an issue. It just takes a little... effort. I did this back in the day when I was promoting my AE Story Arcs.
  6. Exactly how big of a party do you think the accounting department at NCSoft throws when they see us excited about a non-combat pet and a hat?

Do you think they insitute a Casual Thursday for that week - or do they actually take a long lunch at Applebee's?

(now if it was a blunderbuss...)

    Longer Bios

Character length minimums didn't stop Twitter!

But in all seriousness it’s always sobering to be reminded just how small a percentage of heroes running around the game are actually participants in the forums.

I say this because I can't recall the last time I clicked on a hero in game that had a bio at all. An extreme rarity in-game that makes an interesting active post in-forum. Alas…

I of course am all for Bio’s in general - but find – as some others have mentioned - that forcing myself to write something into the confines at hand typically improves the poignancy of what I want to say. I approach the bio as a movie trailer or teaser.

It may be worth pointing out that (I believe) all of the NPC's great and small in-game are held to the same restraints - and I don't recall myself feeling uninformed - and I get pretty click happy when it comes to COH content.

As a disclaimer it takes a “gripping” costume for me to want to click on someone’s bio – and that’s perhaps even more of a rarity in this beholders eye than the existence of a bio. However having said that I still find that even on the rare occasion when I do consider a costume well done enough to click for bio - its still almost always empty. Hmmmm…

It would however be cool if NCSOFT used 1024 characters (plus images) to better describe items for sale in the market.
  8. Piling on...

#1) Is there any benefit to running these if you could care less about merits (of any sort)? Good XP/Drops? New characters to see? New rooms? I mean are these being designed at a House of Horrors level as far as look and feel... or is it "nothing new to see here" and better to just skip 'em if you're not into the alignment thing?

#2) I'm gathering you can solo or duo these now, but I'm getting mixed responses in-game as to what level you need to be to run these. Anyone?

    Thanks.

    Marketing

Well it has been a year - but I visited the "other" hero games market just to fill some downtime I had - and had a flood of observations.

First off - I've seen a bunch of threads here discussing the future, both near and far, of the Paragon Market - and I believe all things would be quickly revealed if you made a visit over there... both in what the future may hold as well as what might be available next week. There is most definitely some eyes on this thing. Uncanny.

Secondly I have another post here where I mentioned "concept" was a very important part of CoH to me - and my feeling/play-style unsurprisingly had some people taken back a bit. So I was rather shocked to see that in the other market - listed with each power - was an actual section dedicated to and labeled "Concepts" which listed ideas for character concepts that the said power may fit with... no math or strategy mind you... just pure creative. Wow.

Lastly, I couldn't believe that one of the older offerings in their market was "turn into a vampire/werewolf" - not the CoH transformation/ToT costume power mind you - and actual transformation in both looks and powers. Beyond this it also stated more powers are made available on the transformation side as you level. The power is said to be permanent and the toggle is temporary (moon goes away, sun comes up, etc). It included things like flock of bats flight and of course... NATURAL CLAWS. Anyway is it me, or is this a brilliant concept as a whole - on how to bring the reality of cursed (blessed?) lycan/vamps into a gaming world.

I have definitely strayed to them long ago (hey it was free) to see what all the hub-bub was about - and although I was able to flesh out a few more concepts than I currently can in CoH... in the end the graphics started to really annoy me and the play just felt slightly off or cheesy... so I remain a loyal lifer here. Plus I have too much cash tied up in CoH now and most of the cool things I saw over there require cash.

But I think if anyone wants to see just how robust the Paragon Market could become (or what is in the immediate pipeline) a peek over there is probably your best Crystal Ball.

(Tornado Flight!? Aw man why did I have to see that.......)
  11. OP hopefully shows this wasn’t a “complaint” - or an acknowledgement of solution – just reaching out to see if I was alone in a feeling.

I have also noticed a great deal of strides on the games part over the years to put more and more options and customization in the hands of the player’s – so I don’t think anything being discussed is out of line.

Completely understood and I believe you are wholly in the majority, hence my wondering if I were alone. Alas my enjoyment and gaming vibe is passionately rooted in these “foreign” things. To be honest I was surprised to see others poke their heads out to say they are of the same school. To give you more insight into my play-style I’d say I am in game 20% of the time and in Costume Creator 80%. Another factoid that puts me even deeper in the minority I know.

    Bingo!

Although I purposely wanted to keep things vague and general I know that can sometimes create more confusion than open discussion - so I should probably narrow down a bit.

I realize now I shouldn’t have used the word “natural” since I wasn’t speaking about an origin or even a race (human)… In fact I often create alien characters (think good ‘ol fashion blood and flesh retro aliens) and take the natural origin since they are perfectly natural on their planet. So what I more specifically meant was non-godlike powers.

Furthermore I do think the melee sets are dialed in pretty good as far as secondary/primary balance, options and being “theme-able” friendly. So the areas where I find myself wanting something else would definitely, as many of you identified, be with the Controllers, Some of the Master Mind sets without a “matching themed” secondary, and to a lesser extant blasters where having god-like powers in both primary and secondary doesn't make sense for the idea. And then of course the villain side AT’s that are in line with these.

Honestly if I were forced to start coming up with solutions I would probably first offer things I’ve done with the tools available to pacify my situation to help give an idea of what I’m after. I very often don’t tray the secondary power at all and then will take powerpool fighting, fitness (in the old days), leadership and even medicine and actually slot and use these as my secondary. This actually works fine for me except the nagging feeling of knowing a secondary opportunity was wasted.

As far as what’s currently available – again I think Willpower really closed a lot of gaps and enabled a lot of concepts to flourish. I also think Ninja Run (another game changer for me) is brilliant and corrected the issue of providing a worthwhile travel power that is non-godlike to fit a bevy of hero profiles. And don’t get me wrong I also think Devices, Traps and Trick Shot do fill this need I am speaking of perfectly and probably exist for this void I feel. It’s just that I find myself having to take them constantly. So I naturally (in a non-godlike way) wondered if there could be one or two more tossed in the mix at some point – and if they could even perhaps be more of a common or broader power than say a tech bow and arrow - and therefore fit a wider range of character concepts.

So where does that leave me (us?) – I dunno, I just wanted to explain my “feeling” a bit more, see if anyone empathized and maybe get some ideas brewing.

As far as my personal sandbox – I REALLY didn’t want to turn it into this because each one of these can be dissected a million times over and probably deserves a separate post. But here are a few things that have danced about in my noggin on occasion that sort of show the hole I find myself trying to fill every other alt or so. Maybe a scaled down secondary pistol set (pistol so much broader of a prop than the bow). A set that somehow highlights super-intelligence. A vastly scaled down street justice or beefed up fighting pool set (I can’t imagine the massive amount of concepts this would polish up – and I actually know of even a few blasters who would pounce). A Dagger/Knife secondary. A Tycoon power set that modifies INFL and Enhancements earned. Actually I’ve often desired a Primary that better syncs up with Storm Summoning (as much as Fire matches Thermal, etc).
  12. Ya know I do appreciate the "take this power and pretend its this power" advice... it's just I've done all of that seven ways to sundown - for many years - and for many toons - coupled with the fact I see more literal options being introduced in other areas all the time - so it fuels my desires and hopes even more. I think my problem is I have been turning a blind eye and walking the fine line of plausible make-believe for a long time when it comes to having things make sense in my mind. Just wondered if others secretly dream of getting a little more love in the "more grounded secondary" department.

More of an issue is that damn trick arrow secondary always just staring me in the face like "You know I'm the only thing that makes sense - even though you're boy never even went to summer camp". I mean it doesn't get more natural than that... but a bow and arrow is a pretty specific and rare and exotic weapon in the world of comics. I can think of a half dozen items that are far more commonplace in the genre that would be a far more universal fit for themes and concepts - so I think it's existence is what makes the absence of other choices more glaring to me.

And keep in mind I am not talking about batman only concepts - I often find myself running into ideas where I don't want/need the hero to be uber on both sides (primary and secondary) and that's when things get hairy. Obviously you go to traps and bow instantly but as my OP states - it's getting a little old for me now-a-days.

For example I have several concepts where I've tried a hero that controls weather - or an ex-circus performer with a great mass hypnosis power - or an apprentice of illusion character... the secondary choices never truly feel just right or are just way off.

I used to run into this a great deal with my tankers scrappers - but Willpower was a game-changer for me in that regard. That was a good day, and the minimal fx made it even juicier. Maybe I am always hoping for that sensation when it comes to the defenders and controllers and such. I always dream that there is some neutral universal general secondary like WP that the DEVS will come up with to calm these waters.

Anyway - I know this is a very personal point of view - but still good to know others have felt at least a bit of a pang when confronted with this specific speed bump during the character creation process.

Never even considered this - I might have to drift into this territory (new for me). Kind of sad in a way because I do selfishly feel like what I am talking about is a void that could be corrected a bit... but GREAT call none-the-less... could really help me keep my sanity over this issue.

Much more enjoyable than the 'get outta the mish QUICK' mindset that us Vets are trapped in.

It's funny - but all of my 7+ year tendencies and habbits went out the window the first time I walked into the House of Horrors trial. I had been eagerly getting a meticulously event themed duo up to level 15 (thank you DFB, damn you broken leveling pact) so my girl could join me for her once a year run and we could partake in the trial. Let me tell you I was like a little kid in a candy store - I relaxed, took my time, looked at every detail, read every word of text and just crawled through this thing. The other 2 people in our party probably hated us but I was upfront - "I've been looking forward to this moment and we're gonna take it all in nice and slow."

It was super refreshing and a really enjoyable approach. In fact something like this that could be solo'd or run (er... walked) with a duo would be just about perfect for my play-style.

Anyway, hoping to use the same approach with the new VIP story arcs and get the same experience out of them.

    p.s.

BRAVO DEVS on HoH - truly incredible on every level. (LOVED how the secret boss mission played out - totally something I would design in AE)
  14. While the grinding thought of power leveling is a foreign concept to me and farming seems so contrastingly uncreative and droll compared to how I enjoy the game... I have to admit that when I hit those spans where it just seems like getting to the next level is taking an eternity, and driving me away from the game, its very refreshing to have a way to close the gap when you hit a plateau... and to get a little bit more instant gratification for time spent vs xp gained.

It's really caused me to pull the triggers on far more alt concepts knowing I can see them realized on a timeline that fits my playing schedule.

    So I'm torn.

    p.s.

  15. I cannot meaningfully explain the amount of times I have set out to create a character concept and been left with either devices/traps or the wildly popular trick-shot (ahem) as the only possibly (barely) plausible secondary options.

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this creative roadblock multiple times? You create a character and you simply don't want/need the secondary to be some fantastical cosmic esoteric energy set... but you are sooo tired of traps/devices... and the thought of your concept standing there holding a bow and arrow makes zero sense.

I'm not saying I have a balanced solution - but I swear I would take a grossly underpowered simple pistol set or something just to keep things on theme... especially since as it stands now if one of my concepts is strong enough I simply don't tray the off-point secondary powers anyway.

I suppose I am alone in the feeling?
  16. Nice to see you used a form of the word "spook" in your post title - but I can't use it in a Super Group name (but I can in a character name).

Ease up on the uber filters - or at least make them consistent.

  18. Randomly stumbled across a little sumpin sumpin in the costume creator early in the wee hours... woopsy...

  19. I'm sure there was a ninja somewhere in time and space that wore fur and wielded a massive battle axe at some point as well, but despite these counter points, I think I'm gonna stick pretty tight with my general theory on the "how dare you omit barbarian katanas" issue.

For game purposes the iconic archetype of the superhero barbarian is pretty well defined. Double blind test 100 randoms on the top 10 items associated with a "barbarian" and I'm betting samurai swords and claws will rank pretty low. I would even artistically question a stereotypical barbarian making the fluid martial movements associated with some of the more elegantly animated powersets being cited, but then again I'm pretty picky when it comes to toons look and feel. At some point you just have to draw a few genre defining lines in the sand or you're going to have more problems then its worth, like diluting sets to the point of being less thematic than they already are or wasting precious resources to force out something just to fill an empty costume category.

Disturbingly there is already evidence of dev tossing something in with a set just to fill a perceived void (the "beastly rage" aura comes to mind - yikes) but i'd personally much rather the team burn those hours on getting something that is unarguably without question on topic perfectly dialed in - or filling unambiguously obvious holes (like wizard hats and robes).

I think we're spoiled by how rich and robust the creator is and sometimes expect cross pollination of everything all the time just because - but i embrace the idea of having to define a theme within a given set of guidelines and concepts from a project management aspect alone. I'm confident that's at least a rough snapshot of the process. However make no mistake, there are other aspects to the process, and choices, that continue to dumbfound me beyond all belief.

Hey woah woah woah easy big shooter.

Claws don't need nuthin' more till it FINALLY gets the coveted "no claws" option - au naturel.

  22. The "red/locked" gunslinger item in the costume generator is definitely a bug, as the flagging system is working correctly for other items that actually exist/are available that I have yet to purchase.

As far as wishlist for this set goes - remember there is also an issue with the current cowboy hats and hair. You only get one choice of hair if you go with the hat. Would be nice if they opened this up just a bit, for instance a cowboy hat with long hair (not pony tail) would be a welcomed addition for a bevvy of character concepts far beyond old west.

Wouldn't mind a cigar/cigarette thats a little more realistic in its look/feel and placement within the mouth. Also perhaps a "spit" emote.

Fwiw those screen shots of the "slavers" just looks like the current police options to me.

    p.s.

I wanted to add that those fringed gloves gave me a vision of a full blown hollywood gene autry type cowboy. That had slipped my mind I'm such a spaghetti western freak. If not...

do I lose my dozens of alts i have on each server? - if so how does it choose which ones I keep?

do i lose previously unlocked costume pieces/content?

do i lose currently built and running architect missions I've created?

    do I get natural claws?

    Claws Clause

The bare bones basis for this taunts and teases me regularly... just emote "roar"

I often growl along with it in angst... more so now that there is a natural animal bestial set that can only be paired with the gaudy steel claws from beta.

I remember when I used to cry for pistols and everyone would pile on and say "never gonna happen"... I hope natural claws turn out the same way for me.

Until then I'll just keep my extremely long fingernails crossed.
