That arc sets ham sandwiches back a century. They've fought hard for their rights!

Quote:Unless we get the chance to buy more slots past 8 down the line, it had very much better not be. If that is the case, then when the 3rd one comes around hardly anyone will be able to submit arcs.Hm. what will be the restrictions on which arcs can be entered each year?
to be eligible for the 2010 Architect Awards, will an arc have to have a publication date after the entry deadline for the 2009 Awards? or will it be more open than that?
I'm thinking it might be like the Academy Awards. must be "released" during the covered "year". -
Justice wins at everything forever, you all should know that.
Grats, guys! -
I'd sing happy birthday, but knowing Kadmon it would be the song that ends the earth.

Quote:It can be argued that anything could theoretically be a good idea if implemented properly. However, I can't think of any way and you haven't provided any examples. So unless someone has a really good idea of how to use it, making it a consistent level range is just being nice to the player. And even if someone does have a really good idea of how to use it, then they should still think twice about it, since what seems like a good idea to them might not be a good idea in everyone else's mind.
I'm in full agreement that you shouldn't do something just because you can. But it's a tool we Architect writers have so why can't someone come up with a good way to use that tool in their story? I don't like the idea of limitations on our creativity.
Besides, nobody is limiting your creativity. You can still run out and make an arc that has level ranges going from 1-5 to 20-21 to 1-40. However, it doesn't mean that anyone will like it. -
The costume creator has tabi boots, yakuza tattoos, baggy pants, robes, those conical hats (can't think of the name). Give your guys some katanas and such and just call them Tsoo.

Heh, Return of the Revenge of the Son of Drakule Part 2: First Blood uses #7 as well, kind of. I guess that depends on how you define the term "adversary".

Quote:Yeah, grats to the nominees, don't get me wrong, but I was sad that there wasn't more fresh blood in the nominees. Was kind of hoping some more unknowns who don't really post on the forums but still have great missions would be highlighted.9 out of the 15 arcs were authored by regulars in this forum.
How's that for a statistic?
Grats to the nominees.

Global chat is doing some strange **** I've never seen before. The letters st are turning into 50 in some words, people's text is getting random quotes and having colons in front of the name instead of after, half of everyone's messages are getting lost. Seems like the server needs some emergency maintenance.
Update: Oh, and left clicking someone's global name crashes the client. -
Sure, there's that whole "halloween event" with "badges" and "temporary powers." But this is the MA forum! Wouldn't you rather be seeing all the horror-related arcs that people have made?
Well I do, at least. Let's see some zombies, mummies, vampires, anything involving something you'd see in a horror movie.
I'll get things started with mine. The Drakule series are comedy arcs based on vampire fiction, with a heaping portion of camp. They also contain archvillains/elite bosses so if you can't handle those solo, bring a friend or two along. The arc numbers are 51357, 84543, and 257242. Author is Laser Jesus (No @ symbol. Damn bug.)
Now let's see those arcs, people! I want to see some horror movie action! -
Give the boss some ridiculous secondary defense power, like extreme regen or willpower, and set him to run when he's down to one minion left. Make sure he's an AV as well. This will practically ensure that his minions will die before he does, and it'll make it rather difficult for even a full team to take him out, since willpower and regen AVs resist regen debuffs 100%. And this way, he'll be running at much higher health. Also, he'll have a revive power. I haven't tried this, but it might work: Have a glowy triggered to become clickable after the AV is killed. Obviously, set the AV to only boss needed to complete. Make the glowy essential for mission completion. Then go into test mode, use the dev tools to kill his minions until he starts running, and then once the AV is running, use the dev tools to kill him. See if he revives and then starts running again, and if he does, see if the mission ends when he gets to the door. If that does work, the villain will have two chances to get away.
This way, it will be like the classic villain move of sacrificing their minions to make a clean getaway. It'll still be a struggle, but the villain will cut his losses and high tail it. Of course, if the story involves the team eventually confronting and defeating the villain for real, you'd have to make another version of him that isn't so retardedly hard to kill for the later encounter. -
#257226, 'Tis Nobler in the Mind will be my submission, mainly because I haven't gotten much feedback on it outside of the people I play with who do AE stuff.
And yes, I submitted this arc to the Architect Awards contest. Honestly, it'd probably be easier to just count the people who didn't. :P -
I have no idea why I feel compelled to respond to you again, since you've pretty much moved on to ad hominem attacks, but I'll just give you a few quick responses.
Quote:Not at all. I'm going based on your words.Originally Posted by Bovine AvengerWould you care then to retract your ridiculous claim that I'm hung up on one thing?

Quote:If he's worshipped, here, now in this arc where we see the citizens of Paragon's reactions, then he's not bush league in Paragon City, is he?
Quote:I also have to question if you even understand what LOLBAT is. So there's no memes in the first few missions, are there? That's your argument now is it? So your contact for those isn't LOLBAT is he? Oh wait... he is. And the whole point of the characterisation, and his opponents struggles with him is about the fact that LOLBAT is a living meme himself. So if he's in the first missions, by his very nature, what does that show about your awareness of the first missions?
Quote:This is really, really quite simple. You like what you think the joke is, and you'll blindly defend that joke... but you don't seem to care in the slightest bit about who tells it, or when, or even if the joke punchline even fits the build up any more, as long as it's been told. Tom Bosley! That's the punchline to a joke as well. There's a joke within a joke there too, because the set up refers directly to what you are doing. But do you know where it comes from? Nope. I do though... ho ho ho, and now I'm demanding you laugh! Laugh at the funny joke, even if you don't know why! But life doesn't work like that, and people won't laugh just because they are told there's a joke there... they have to get it too. Tom Bosley!
Quote:Ok... so it's a pun, is it? Right. Now explain what the "Pot" part of the pun is.
Quote:And there's at least one vaguely witty homophone to the name too... Quote:(to Kroc from Batman... if with more research it's what I think it is, you're way off buddy)
Oh yes, a Crock Pot.
Quote:But considering your tone, I'm only going to extend the same courtesy to you that you extended to me... you don't have an idea in "hell" why it's Croc Pot. You just assumed it must have been funny, grabbed the first word and made the first leap you could to justify it being funny
You probably overthought it, considering you were thinking of looking for references outside of the U.S. and Canada for it and just didn't see the most obvious pun.
By the way, that's not me trying to make a personal attack against you.
And really, neither was my initial post. I disagreed with your analysis of the arc's direction of humor, and yes, I did defend it, because I had a different interpretation and since this IS a feedback thread, after all, I thought I should list my contradicting interpretation just in case someone is looking in here to see what other people thought of the arcs, and if they would enjoy them or not.
You have some valid points, about things like the description of "toasting" hamburgers being too ambiguous. And honestly, all I really was stating was "Humor is subjective, and you didn't find it funny. I did. Other people might find it funny too, and for more reasons than 'lol netspeak is funny'." -
Quote:You're incredibly hung up on the mission with Croc Pot in it. You realize that was one mission, right? Sure, you have to fight him in the last mission, which also uses his custom group, but the first and third mission don't involve cheezburgers or anything. Hell, they don't even involve memes. Scrabbler hates LOLBAT because he has horrible spelling.
But the Arc again? It's just I Kan Haz Cheezeburger. You know, the moment it's mentioned where he'll be going, and not because it's a witty reinterpretation, but because it's the laziest possible path to shoe horn in references to cheezeburgerz. There was nothing, in the entire world of Superman, Spiderman, Marvel, anything at all which could have been more creatively applied? And his opponent? Basically he's You Kan't Haz Cheeseburger. For health reasons yes, except he's actually a pot noodle himself. Um, ok? And the Burger Factory is also a restaurant and also the modelling agency that does their marketing too, depending on which NPC you find next.... It's wider world is horribly inconsistent even within it's own limited boundaries.
And where the hell do you keep getting this think about Croc Pot being a parody of pot noodles? Frankly, you pulled that out of thin air. He's called Croc Pot because one of Batman's villains is Killer Croc. His name is just a pun, nothing more.
Quote:And also, as you pointed out above but now contradict, the people who apparently worship him don't think that.
And really, if you have such a problem with the line about toasting their hamburgers, talk to Dr. Aeon about it. It's a good chance that's a typo or he forgot to write a word down or something. Personally, I thought it was pretty obvious that he was going for the visual image of them "clinking" their hamburgers together like champagne glasses.
And the plot of them mind controlling LOLBAT being incredibly vague and confusing? Also part of the joke. Again, they're completely terrible villains. At the end of Scrabbler's clue in the last mission, he realizes how terrible of an idea making everyone talk like LOLBAT is.
Honestly, I think you're too hung up on one character and a couple missteps in writing. You've missed the greater joke at play, especially if you think the entire joke is contained in the second mission. -
Spoilers, I guess?
I completely disagree with your interpretation of LOLBAT's humor, Bovine. You see, I found that arc pretty hilarious. Not because I read I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER and instantly began laughing uncontrollably. The humor to me came from the fact that LOLBAT is a terrible hero, his villains are all terrible with incredibly small and inane villainous plots. LOLBAT has legions of adoring fans despite the fact that all he ever really does is shout in netspeak about memes that have been long played out, and his villains all represent some sort of petty, small minded elitism that is trying to fight against the stupification that they believe he represents. And through all of these stupid plots to try to defeat a superhero that poses a threat to all of no one, you get roped in because their plots still endanger human lives, but are of absolutely no earth shattering consequence. Forcing a burger company to serve healthy food isn't going to do anything. But people have been kidnapped, so your character is forced to sigh and go save the day because LOLBAT's obviously worthless.
But humor's pretty subjective anyhow. If you didn't get that out of it, then that's pretty much it. I read PVP, so I've seen the author's LOLBAT comics, and the basic premise is what I described up there. I thought he did a pretty good job of making that shine through with the little things like the mission acceptance dialogue, the clues, and some of the NPC dialogue. For instance, when the fake Scrabbler complains about you taking him down so hard, and Croc Pot's henchman groaning because they have to fight an actual hero for once. LOLBAT is a terrible character. The author knows thatt, you know that, the side characters in the story know thatt, the only people that don't know are LOLBAT and his equally terrible villains. And I find that hilarious.
I gave it a 4. It made me laugh out loud multiple times, and that's all I can really ask from it's story. My issues with it's difficulty, however, have already been stated, and are ultimately what kept it from getting a 5 from me.
Quote:Being a fan of theirs for quite some time now, I think the main issue is that the written word is not their strength. So much of their humor comes from how they deliver their lines, and that is really damn hard to put in written form. Frankly, the difference in quality of their guest arcs and their videos is like night and day.Originally Posted by LazarusJust got this +rep comment: "Go to RoosterTeeth.com"
I didn't plan to before and I have even less intention to now. This smacks a bit of when people were trying to bump up their arc ratings by 5-starring your arc and then implying that you owe them one.
That's assuming that it was someone from that site who wrote that and not someone on the forum who didn't think that a post or PM would have served better. Of course if I really gave a damn I'd have googled the name already. -
I didn't see this mentioned, but earth assault for custom critters deals far more damage with the stone melee powers than the versions in stone melee. For example, at level 50 an archvillain's seismic smash will deal 1715.58 damage if the critter has stone melee, but it will deal 3113.75 damage if it has stone assault. The jump in damage is a different percentage for different critter ranks, with bosses gaining about a 50% increase in damage and archvillains gaining roughly an 80% increase in damage over stone melee. (Don't quote me on that, I'm not the best mathematician.) It looks like they somehow got the wrong damage scale.

Superstrength with rage and knockout blow is the easy way out, if your goal is to completely frustrate people.
If your goal is to make it a threat instead of a massacre, I would suggest against it. Unfortunately there's not a lot of to-hit buffs available to custom enemies that don't also have a rather large increase in damage. Targeting Drone is probably the biggest available one. You could also choose a damage set with high innate accuracy, such as weapon sets, archery especially. I'd suggest looking at high innate accuracy attacks and to-hit buffs instead of defense debuffs, since powersets that rely heavily on defense have resistances to them. A super reflexes character would practically ignore them.
EDIT: After messing around in AE for a while, I think the best option if you're not going for rage+KO blow insta-death, is to make a Katana/Devices AV, give it targeting drone, and caltrops and gun drone if you want (for the little bit of autohit damage and the gun drone's high innate accuracy) and have it spawn with custom enemies that have fortitude. Archery deals less damage than Katana, and I found that Archery/Devices tends to want to use taser and web grenade all the time. Katana has a 1.05x innate accuracy, and all of it's attacks except for divine avalanche have a 10% defense debuff. Going in with my SR scrapper, the only way I was able to get it so the AV wasn't hitting me half the time was by using elude and all of my toggles, and that was just with two fortitudes on the AV. -
Also, the addition in level is in addition to the "normal" level of the AV, in cases where an AV spawns at a specific level, like Tyrant never being below level 50. My level 48 tank and his team of level 47 sidekicks had to fight a level 52 Tyrant, even though the level was just set to +1. For comparison, the Marauder and Dominatrix we fought in the mission just prior spawned at level 50.
That was a really long and annoying fight. Even with a rad. -
Not to mention the strange implications of those messages appearing as thought bubbles over your character's head. Makes your character seem like a neurotic mess.
"Your mentor's getting too far away from you! What's wrong with you?" *character begins hitting himself in the head* "Stupid, stupid, STUPID!" -
That sucks. Hopefully he'll be comfortable until he goes. You have my condolences.

Quote:Carnies are nothing. Seriously. They have bosses that can pull some annoying tricks out of their sleeves. Everything else dies incredibly fast to lethal damage. Knives of Artemis aren't hard, just annoying with calrops spam. Malta are difficult, however, as they have something that will hit practically anyone's weakness.I'm a little leery of making assumptions of what the "average player" is capable of. Are the custom mobs in the arc harder than what you would encounter in game? I don't think so. I would find Arachnos, Longbow and the Circle of Thorns equivalent in difficulty to what I faced in the LOLBAT arc. I'd rate Malta, Carnies, Knives of Artemis as being much harder, especially at the +0/x3/Boss Enabled difficulty.
As for Captain Dynamic, I think he's equivalent in strength to an Arachnid Elite Boss, about the same regen rate and attack power. In other words, there's an in game, dev created creature on par with him that the devs expect the average player to face.
I also don't find build up / aim / fiery embrace as being so unbalancing that players can't overcome it. An Arachnos Tarantula Queen boss can debuff your defense down to nothing and have just as easy of a time hitting a defense based character as a custom critter with tohit buffs. And given that the attack is psy based, I'm fairly sure it's an auto hit against a SR character.
You're half wrong on one account and completely wrong on the other regarding Tarantula Queens. Psionic attacks are not auto hit. Mind Control and Illusion control powers don't have positional attack types, and that's it. Dominate, for instance, ignore's SR's defense, but it's not autohit in the slightest. Other psionic attacks still generally have a positional attack type. My SR is far, far better than an invulnerability tank at not dying from psionic damage because of this. Also, the Tarantula Queen only debuffs your defense down to nothing if you don't have a lot of defense debuff resistance, which SR does. SR scrappers can had radiation infection put on them by Positron and only have their defense go down by a slight amount.
However, that's still irrelevant. Tarantula Queens are still one boss in one group. Sure, you'll run in to things that will hit your weakness some times. When I fight malta I always go for the Gunslingers first because they have high accuracy. Same with rularuu eyeballs. However, the problem with custom critters is that practically every blast set has aim in it, every melee set has a build up equivalent, and they get them on hard. All four of the guest author missions have enemies that have build up or aim. Some of them have enemy groups that have one of their ranks completely filled with enemies with build up and aim. Hell, Quest for Magic has a boss with TWO Aims!
This is not good enemy design. This is strongly stacking the odds against one specific kind of protective power. Just because you don't think it's too much, it doesn't mean it's not. To have every lieutenant in a group have aim or build up is just brutal to characters who get by mostly on defense. Apparently your shield scrapper didn't have much of a problem, though I suspect that has more to do with shield charging most of the things to death than superior protective power. (Though, you also do have resistance to most types of damage, whereas an SR scrapper does not.)
