I've not checked out the program, but you can start CoH directly, if you pass cityofheroes.exe the arguments -project coh

Quote:Because it's only been about 36 hours since this all went down? And if the Titan Network is seen putting out such info, it could destroy any chance of NCSoft being willing to listen to them (would you listen to people that are actively trying to sabotage your property?). What they're trying certainly isn't unprecedented. Hell, if a random person making ROMs for Samsung phones can set up a meeting with their top executives and convince them to support CyanogenMod, then anything must be possibleWhy is this not being publicised and open how-to's now? As much of it should be out on the internet as possible so nothing can be lost
Quote:The map stuff doesn't address my point that missions are not stored either - short of getting the actual stuff from ncsoft the best way would be to get a demo files section on paragonwiki or something for each mission and make sure that every mission has at least 2 different demo files from different people, or something like that -
Mishii has an... intriguing relationship with Paragon. I got chewed out by a GM one particularly time... now that was funny

My first character was a Villain as well... specifically, a Ninja Blade / Regeneration Stalker. It had crappy ST damage, no AoE damage, crap for survivability, and horrible end issues. I've been meaning to redo the build since Stalkers have been completely overhauled. The combination should be fairly good now (not the best, but certainly good enough to be enjoyable), but I'd never really gotten around to it. I've done several Mids builds... and I was actually starting to slowly amass the inf and A-merits necessary to IO out my characters (I had finally broken a billion on one character not too long ago! My Peacebringer I did even make two months ago, though, has made over half a billion inf while doing a fair amount of IOing already). A shame, really.
It's not EXACTLY the first costume, there's been a few minor tweaks. But it's pretty damn close to the original. Probably my biggest mistake was not realizing you could put multiple of the same type of enhancements in a power! Fortunately, I was still quite low level at the time (not even to twenty!). Also, my first travel power was Teleport (and I still love it, even if it could use some loving...). -

Quote:The main issue was NCSoft going into the red last quarter. $6 million in the red put them into panic mode, which means cuts had to be made. Unfortunately, CoH was what got cut, being pretty much the smallest of the games. The ultimate point here is that NCS obviously knew COH had no eastern market, so that's just not a fair excuse to me. Why fund Freedom if your fallback for it not meeting your expectations is "Well it had no Eastern market."
No **** it had no Eastern market. It wasn't even sold in the East. -
They did an asian launch called "City of Hero". It was an utter failure. That was a LONG time ago... I think before NCSoft even bought the game&devs.
-
Quote:To their credit, they did save CoH from Cryptic slowly bleeding it to death, and put a large amount of money into it (which allowed the dev team to expand many times over). CoH would have been gone many years ago if it wasn't for them purchasing the game.Instead, they did jack and squat. They sat there with their thumb up their *** even when given free shout outs by Big Bang Theory.
Not that I'm happy in the slightest about what just happened. -
The problem wasn't Freedom being a failure. That's about all we actually know (Freedom certainly increased the life of the game).
The problem was most likely NCSoft needed to cut something due to Aion underperforming, and GW2 costing a crapton of money to market... and they were running a deficit of $6 million, so they needed to cut something. Unfortunately, CoH, being their smallest thing, simply made the most sense. -
Quote:Actually, it's not TSW causing the bluescreens (in fact, it never did crash the short time I played it), nor did it force me to update the drivers, just recommended... although apparently it used 35GB of disk space!Did you try the 304.79 drivers? I've had pretty good success with those. (This is another problem with TSW. It should not be this hard to get working.)
At this point, I'm mostly hoping that the old 259 (or something) drivers I had been on don't cause the crashes! At least if they work, I can go from there... -
Quote:I've not tried TOR, but these are long. Very long. And not really much is said, and as Brillig points out, you remain silent the whole time... so it's not really a conversation, but just being talked at.If it's anything like SW:TOR's cut scenes, I didn't mind those so much.
Also, I upgraded my graphics drivers since TSW was complaining... aaaaannnndddd now I'm getting irregular blue screens.Tried with two different 30x drivers, so probably gonna have to roll back and hope they go away.

Just tried TSW... I felt like I was watching a movie! Long *** cut scene, followed by long *** cut scene, followed me by running slowly to a waypoint, then another waypoint, to be rewarded with another cutscene! I prefer when I can largely dive right into the gameplay... especially for an MMO.
I might give it another try in my remaining 3 days, but it seems they're not big on brevity. -

Quote:There's probably been more redname posts in the last 24 hours than... most any other day. Okay, half of them are part of a fight between Tunnel Rat and Black Pebble in bAss Ackward's big red name reveal thread (as Fire Man)Okay I'd still like confirmation from a RED NAME if any are left plus here's another question...
The other half, well, they're a bit too sad to get into.
Quote:COH is done but NC soft has numerous other games .... is everything done or can we look at moving to Guilde Wars? Aion? etc
Just how deep is the cutting going or should we all just start looking for another company to deal with as well? -
It was apparently something the Devs were planning on turning into an EAT... but then the dev(s) responsible for it left the game, and I think no one remaining knew exactly what the full plan/story was.

I'm trying it out (well, in at least another hour when the slow-*** download finally finishes). I have the strong suspicious, that the points raised by Grim and Sam will leave me rather uninterested in it.
I remember back when I played Guild Wars (1) when it first came out... one thing I quickly realized I hated was how everyone that was the same class as me looked the same. Sure, sure, I could dye a few things... but that was it! City of Heroes' costume creator got so much right. I'd say APB's is superior in many ways (although a much more narrow focus) in a technical sense, but PWE did the classic MMO thing of locking 99% of the customization options behind unlocks (it's probably why I still play it some).
I would like to find a new game that's enjoyable as CoH was... but I don't have high hopes. -

Quote:And if I'm not mistaken, that player was me!Grrrrrrrr ...
THERE IS ABSOUTELY ZERO EVIDENCE CONFIRMING THAT WHOLE "5 YEARS LICENSE" THING. THAT WAS ALL SPECULATION MADE BY A PLAYER WHICH HAS BEEN TAKEN AS FACT. THERE ARE OTHER, MORE LIKELY REASONS FOR THIS.(At least I brought up the whole 'IIRC, the engine is actually licensed from cryptic' thing, which then was said in another thread by the player I was responding to as the license had expired, and it went from there
)
Right now, there's absolutely no evidence to support any theory. Hell, for all we know, a rogue government agency forced NCSoft to kill CoH, or they'd murder the debs!
I think we should all hold off on the chants for 'BOYCOTT!!!!'... at the very least until the various contingency plans have been given a chance. If everything falls through, then sure, go wild screaming boycott. But, until then, hold off.
Edit: 'player' not 'power'! -
NCSoft did. Exactly why, we don't know (was it to try to make up on their books for the $6 million in losses they had last quarter? Because they couldn't renew their license with PWE for the engine? Because Positron made a joke that some big-wig in Korea found highly offensive? We can only guess).
But, NCSoft's other MMOs are much larger (apparently, the drop in income from Aion is greater than the total income from CoH). The player base might be fiercely loyal, but many of us weren't interested in NCSoft's other games anyways (oh yay, generic grindfest in a forest!).
I'm pretty sure NCSoft sacrificed CoH merely to improve their bottom line temporarily, until they can report how many truck-fulls of money GW2 has made them. -
Quote:Yup, Valve purchasing CoH would gain it a massive amount of publicity. It likely wouldn't go through immediately, though... so they might do some work behind the scenes with the codebase before putting it back out there. I'd imagine they'd replace the Paragon Store with their own microtransaction system (since the Paragon Store is actually operated by a third party as it is). They'd probably also add hats. Lots of hats.Maybe, maybe not. Fact is, they're hurting for money, and bad. CoH might compete with their other superhero MMO oh wait they don't have one. And yes, it's a desperate move, but Valve has the financial clout to buy it, and the exposure to make it successful enough to make the money back.
Never know what'll happen. It's certainly a huge long shot... but it doesn't hurt to try multiple different things (and Valve buying CoH is infinitely better than any other publisher I can think of!).
Edit: And I'd rank this as being about a billion times more likely to cause something to happen than a petition convincing NCSoft to un-can CoH. But it takes little effort, and it doesn't hurt, so might as well give it a shot. -
