NCsoft wasn't asking for too much money. They were just turning down all offers. Several people at companies who approached them have mentioned this. (Trion Worlds, among others)
It's over, the end. -
When CO started into it's beta I was excited. I liked what I played, and figured that like CoH, the game would improve and expand over time to be something really special. I bought a lifetime subscription for it.
And then it came out and was a mess at launch, and continued to be a mess. More content got added here and there, the Comic Series/Adventure Packs had some cool stuff once they got good at those(Resistance is legitimately a lot of fun I think). But the game remained buggy, every new patch broke as many things as it added, and the development team remained silent all the time.
With CoH shutting down I decided I should go try it out again. Like, REALLY try it out, see everything there is to experience in the game(without being a crazy completionist). I took three or four different playstyles of characters to roughly lv25, stuck with one to 35, and another all the way to 40 and played through some of the 'endgame' content. I've played the different holiday events, special things like the Nighthawk vehicle mission(I even bought a Hawkwing jet), and dug into the Nemesis content as deeply as the game will let me.
Every single aspect of Champions Online has been so close to good that it's just depressing. The game's not awful, it's very close to being something enjoyable, but it's just short of that. The game's a heartbreaker. Every idea they've had and designed content around is great, in concept, but the execution is always lacking. The worst of this is the vehicle 'system' set to release this Friday. Early on they were talking this up, that it'd be a whole alternate character progression and playstyle, have it's own extensive set of missions and be just as customizable as your characters.
Instead it's shipping with 2 different vehicle types that you can get 'variants' of, and the only customization for those is being able to slot in a few different gimmick weapons like tractor beams or railguns. And that 'extensive set of missions' is a whole single mission. Once again, they took a great opportunity to expand and improve the game and instead just wasted a bunch of development time on glorified "turn into X" device powers.
Champions Online is the abusive spouse I keep coming back to, thinking THIS time it'll be good, THIS time they'll treat me right, THIS time the game will feel right and make me happy. And then I just leave a few weeks later with a lighter wallet and feelings of regret.
It's got so much potential, but they're just squandering more and more of it as time goes on.
Gonna miss you a lot, CoH. -
I haven't been around ingame much the past while(which is a shame- I started playing regularly once they added Water Blast and then they shut the whole thing down on me) but there might be some people who remember me and want to stay in touch. So.
Characters people might remember me on are Kelp Plankton, Poison Eel, P-Tron, ShifTab aka Tabitha MKII, Optimystical, Deathgirl, and more recently Aquatique.

I'm pretty sure that within the past year or two, EA offered to buy Valve for $1 Billion. Valve laughed it off and said it wasn't even half of what their company was worth. Nobody's buying them.
-
Another Kansas City MO person here, I get out of classes around 2:30 on Friday so 3pm meetup thing is maybe cutting it close depending on where stuff happens(I'm not sure how long it will take me to get from KCAI to wherever). I can hopefully make it to wherever is solidly decided on though.

The biggest thing for me is the Enhancement system. I don't like gear in MMOs, it's one of the most horrible, boring things in the world to me. I want to play the game and not worry about numbers. Enhancements did that for me- I could toss some on, level up a few times, and just buy some more. Or slot them as they drop. I didn't have to weigh options of X stat in this hat VS Y stat in this helmet and one of them gives me Z ability but the other doesn't and, ugh. Boring and time consuming. I wanna punch dudes.
Plus, the other Supers MMOs out there don't even use a gear system that makes sense- it will never seem logical to me to have super-powered hero types finding some boots or goggles on a criminal and deciding to wear them. Enhancements got around this, and in a brilliant way, because you enhanced your powers themselves.
CoH, you are the only Supers MMO to make any ******* sense. I'll miss that the most. -
Been hangin' with the CORP people for a bit now, on and off, and they're a fun group. Though I've been struck with a case of The Shys and have a hard time working myself into any actual RP stuff. But it's been that way for me in CoH too for a while now, sooo oh well.
But if you're looking for a place where you can keep being a superhero after CoH is gone, and CO fits your gameplay preferences, CORP is good people. And the freeform system for building characters lets you do some crazy, interesting things.
(also I'm @kelpplankton over in CO too, if anyone who remembers me from CoH wants to shoot me a friend invite there) -
Posting this on behalf of the player of Sister Colette/Colette Valiant(depending on when you knew the character):
Quote:Hi.
Please forgive that a friend is posting this for me. Like so many of us,
I was caught unprepared and am now locked out.
While Im far from a psychologist or a priest, I know that this, the
perceived death of our community, comes as a dreadful trauma.
Thats not news to you, of course, those of you whove been crying
real tears. I do have the distance and understanding to know that
many of you will not have your grief taken seriously by your family or
friends. They wont understand why a person your age is weeping
like some spoiled kid just cause youre losing your favorite computer
game.
They dont understand that it has become a community, a place you
live in when you can, as real to you as the neighborhood you grew
up in. And like that first move as a child, youre crying because youre
being uprooted from that safe, familiar place. Worse, that place and
the people in it are being erased like chalk from a blackboard. They
do not, cannot understand. You must feel so alone.
Or perhaps youre one of the unlucky ones, housebound by illness or
disability, for whom this place has become your lifeline. In Paragon,
you can fly! Here you are beautiful and admired and in control of your
life. Here people can see you not in the crude, imperfect flesh, but for
who and what you really are, a luminous being alive with creativity
and compassion. But now that beautiful, right reality is being taken
from you, brutally, without remorse or apology.
You all need to take this seriously. This is a trauma. It is
psychologically as real and painful as a death in the family. I myself
lost a beloved pet this very week. I miss little Mocha very much, and
I will confess that, though I think myself tough and disciplined, theres
no doubt Im showing the symptoms and impairments of grieving.
Im not so presumptuous to suggest you good folks seek out
counselling, but I am asking you to take this seriously. Be gentle
with yourselves. Give yourself time to process. Monitor yourself, be
mindful and if, just as an example, you find yourself thinking suicidal
thoughts, absolutely take that seriously and call for help.
Understand that life does go on, that change is always with us, and
we must all learn to let go, eventually, of all things, even in the end...
ourselves. But until that moment, fully appreciate! Learn the lesson of
this death rehearsal, if you will, though its a painful one.
One of my favorite television shows ever gave me this little gem.
I wish tomorrow would never come. I wish the day after today... was
today. And the next day, and the next day too. I wish it was always
today. Then Id be able to be with you forever.
There is no such thing as forever. Everything ends sooner or later,
just as it should. Because now is just now, the only now, and thats
what makes it precious.
Perhaps it will set your mind at ease to know that City of Heroes will
most likely be purchased by some other company, hopefully one that
appreciates it. MMOs have died, yes. But CoH is, as we all know,
something special. This way NC-Soft can have their precious server
space for their new game, and we can be free of them. While its
sadly less probable our devs will be rehired, we might yet see new
content. Wouldnt it fit Jack Emmerts ego to regain his property and
have Statesman swoop in to save the day? A lot of people would
have a big ol serving of crow to eat then, wouldnt they?
A lot can happen in three months, so dont give up hope.
But either way, learn the hard lessons of this moment and remember
that nothing in life is permanent or guaranteed, and that too is as it
must be. Be aware that you are grieving, and treat yourself kindly.
Things will get better, in time.
I have presumed far too much speaking to you all like this, I know. Im
sure you will find the strength to overcome. For you are a hero deep
down inside, even if the time must come when the rest of us can no
longer see it.
Until we meet again,
Sister Colette Valiant

This is from Polaron, who can't post:
Quote:And this is from me:Man. Some of my favorite gaming memories have come from City of Heroes...Ending up on CuppaJo's team during a huge PvP With the Devs event. Calling in obnoxious songs to the CAPE to irritate my friends. Getting into a bidding war with everyone's favorite Paladin (and winning!) for the right to run the Baby New Year mission with Ghost Widow during a giant CAPE Holiday Party.
Subsequently asking Ghost Widow why Baby New Year looked like Danny DeVito in a toga, and getting the answer "The universe truly is mysterious" after a very long pause.
I've made so many true, actual friends through this game and I'm going to miss logging in whenever I have some free income. I was even thinking earlier today about a new character idea I had that I was going to make when I got my gaming computer up and running again.
Paragon Studios, you guys were AMAZING and City of Heroes easily had the best dev team and community of any MMO. I've played many, MANY MMOs since CoH got me hooked and I always ended up disappointed in the community and always ended up coming back to Paragon City.
Virtue, what can I say? As much as I disliked That Joke, it was still kind of mindblowing to have people I'd never met before run up and blame me for something or other. Or have people run up and just exclaim "Wait, you're actually REAL?!" Less than a week ago I was hanging out at Red Robin's house laughing about the ridiculous things our characters had done.
I don't want it to go away. You guys did great.
Polaron
When I preordered City of Heroes, I was excited. The idea of making my own superhero and running around, punching bad guys was all I needed at age 16. The amazing community I found on Virtue when I gave roleplaying a try on a whim was what kept me around through age 24, though I admittedly got a little on-and-off as time went on.
Seeing my own characters change and evolve as they met everyone else's, forging friendships both in and out of character, this game helped me get through some really rough patches in my life and kept me from feeling like I was alone. There was drama, not everything was great, but overall I wouldn't have traded my time here for anything.
There's too many amazing people and characters out there for me to name them all, and just naming one or two would be unfair to everyone else I've met- but you all know who you are. And you're all fantastic.
I'm just glad that, for a short amount of time, Kelp Plankton was able to at long last have actual water powers in this game. To see something as long-requested as that, my most wanted thing be added to the game? It brought me back. It made me want to be a part of everything again after being gone for a long while.
And now, sadly, that's been cut short. But it was good, being back again. Seeing people I knew, meeting new faces. Having fun in the game again, after so long.
It makes me sad to see it all go.
But hopefully I'll meet y'all in other games, other places. If anyone's moving over to Champions Online, look me up there. @KelpPlankton of course. The screenname I invented for City of Heroes, and one that will stick with me online for the rest of my life. Keep an eye out for me. I'll be around the net.
Thanks, Virtue, for making this game for me. Without you, it wouldn't have been half as fun as it was.
And, goodbye. -
I would totally be up for this. I've got an urban legend monstery type character guy who I've tried once or twice and lost interest in since I couldn't find a good group for him, and this could work out well for that.
@KelpPlankton in-game of course. -
I'm not sure where else to ask this, so I guess it goes here, but all of a sudden my characters have lost access to capes! The only kind that shows up is the High Collar ones. Single-shoulder capes, asymmetrical, overshoulder, etc etc etc all don't appear at all. Characters who had them before still have them, but they vanish when I go into the editor and the options aren't in any dropdown menu.
This is particularly troubling since I bought the "always have access to capes" thing in the store a while ago. Is this a known issue that I can fix myself or should I be contacting support? -
I've invited me. Hope you don't mind, I let myself in.

Quote:Almost every line in the movie was delivered in the same way as that scene in the commercial. The movie has a cheesy, self-aware tone to it that made me giggle internally at things. All these bad lines feel set up on purpose. So it's like 300, then, only worse? Well, at least that "What does it accelerate" commercial was hilariously bad, even if it didn't get to the "Dine in Hell" meme levels.
It's a really fun movie. A terrible movie, but a really, really fun one. And I'm going to maintain that stance. It's right up there alongside the VanDamme Street Fighter flick, same tone, same writing style, same sort of loose characterizations based on the originals, with the required nods to parts of the franchise. I'll probably rent it a few times to force people to watch it, just like I do for that. It's worth that much. I love movies like that.
Transformers would be a lot more fun if it were like this. Less "epic" and "serious", but I don't know why people want Transformers to be like that anyway. It... doesn't work terribly well when they ask me to take Starscream seriously. -
Quote:It's a fun movie, but if you try to take it seriously you'll ruin it for yourself. So it good or bad?
Gave it 3 out of 4 but made it sound like it sucks so now im confused
Really, it's a kid's flick aimed at moving toys. Much like the original cartoon. It's still very enjoyable, but keep that in mind.
I had a lot of fun spotting the throwaway characters and costumes that were made to be figures. Arctic Assault variants for everyone! -
Fun movie. Great kids flick. If someone had told me this was a live-action adaption of an unused pilot episode or something for a revival of the cartoon, I'd totally believe them.
It feels like a live-action saturday morning cartoon. And it doesn't take itself as seriously as Transformers does, which is one of the main flaws of TF.
There's a kung-fu grip mention, knowing ends up being half the battle, and all other sorts of goofy goodness.
Worth seeing. Not worth rushing to see, but worth seeing. Ignore the plot holes(there's a lot of silly ones), become 9 years old in your mind, and you'll love it.
(and on a side-note, I loved them turning a grey goo scenario into a controllable weapon. It's so... supervillain.) -
Revamped footstep soundeffects. Including new ones for surfaces that previously shared sounds! Garbage sounds different from dirt sounds different from grass! Every step makes a different sound instead of the same one!

Am I missing something, or is there no bonus power being added with this besides the "I can turn into a girl" ability?

Does this mean that we can actually have an alternative to the Updater to get the new patch ? I normally don't like Steam but I have to admit their Patching technology would be very helpful for COH
[/ QUOTE ]
Steam will not replace the City of Heroes Updater for "regular" City of Heroes customers.
The current build being delivered by Steam has to be patched to our current build on our Live servers.
[/ QUOTE ]
But can current players link their accounts to Steam without buying the game there as well?
If not, is this possibility being looked into at all? I love Steam, and having access to CoH through it would be perfect for me. -

Arc Name: A European Vacation: The Faceless Threat
Arc ID: 78549
Faction: Heroic
Creator Global/Forum Name: @KelpPlankton
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate. Was able to solo it on my Blaster.
Synopsis: You've won a free trip to Paris! But, as typically happens with Superhero vacations, something goes wrong, and you end up having to face off against enemies both old and new. Prove your innocence and stop a catastrophe! And then maybe you can get a vacation from your vacation.
Estimated Time to Play: Claims to be long, but is comprised of short maps. Takes 30-40 minutes with a small and efficient team, likely an hour and a half tops if you're big and uncoordinated.

Arc has been updated a little bit. Some dialogue altered to remove a few technical problems, and the Faceless Captains toned down slightly.
39 ratings so far, and it's at 5 stars, so I guess people are enjoying it. Please give it a shot! I loved making it. -

One comment, Bow Tie (Shoulders) for males and Huge already exists. If it's now available for Female characters, that would be a new addition.
And a question to go with it: My first thought on seeing these was that the jackets would be in Trench Coats, to lock out capes, but apparently, they're plain Jackets, AND there's the Wedding Veil. Is it possible for Female characters to have the Veil, Wedding jacket, AND a Cape?
[/ QUOTE ]
The veil locks out capes. However, you can have a cape or wings with the jacket... on females. But on males it locks out the back options again.
