I'm not a huge fan of the red side content but I'll definately be rolling a brute with an eye on blue side when GR comes out. I've had hero character concepts before that'd work great with the brute mechanics.
-
Bad idea, etc.
That said, if they ever did do this, I'd want is accessible at any time. Thay way, once I hit lvl 43 or so, I could say "screw it" and pay my $10 to be level 50 -
AR/Dev, I go -1/x3 with Bosses. I could probably up the difficulty or add another notch to team size but my current settings allow me to pretty casually mow through missions.
-
Above and beyond "Psycho who falls in love with CoH characters" and "Creepy dude RPing a chick", there's also the third possibility:
"You mean you DO love me too?Wow, that's great... we should meet. But, I'm so poor
Maybe you can send me $200 for a plane ticket so we can meet in person?

Quote:I'd actually go with the analogy that it's more like a computer. Some people just buy a computer out of a box and get to playing on it. Some people buy most of a computer and then spend time adding to it to help boost its performance. Some people spend a lot of time and money trying to keep their computer on the cutting edge and squeeze every bit of performance possible out of it. Some people are happy upgrading by just buying more memory or maybe a new graphics card; others worry about the motherboard or overclocking the processor, etc.If we had to run with this analogy, playing this game would be like driving a scrap car along the interstates and occasionally running across a shop that does work for free, upgrading this or that on your car as you go along. The goal of such an adventure would be pretty much to just cruise the highways, wind in your hair and that's that, with upgrading the actual car only something that happens as part of the road trip.
If this WERE like building a car, I'd probably have left long ago. When building a car, you're basically spending a lot of time doing work, paying money and probably chasing a deadline if you do it professionally, but you don't actually get to DRIVE it until you're done. Well, you could, but it's not really quite the same.
But all these people are actually using their computers in the meantime. The guy who wants the best possible system still puts his components in and fires up his games and plays them until he starts drooling over the next wave of upgrades.
And, just like with IOs, you have some people who can't imagine why anyone would degrade themselves by buying a system at Best Buy or from Dell instead of handpicking the best pieces and assembling it their kitchen table because then the computer is so much better and so much cheaper. And you have people who say "Look, I just want something that'll play the games I want to play, has a warranty in case it stops playing them and requires the least amount of tinkering on my part before I get to the 'fun' stuff."
I guess I'm a pretty middle of the road guy since I'm playing on an old Dell with new memory, graphics card and power supply I replaced and since I advocate for Common IOs but don't spend a lot of time/money trying to noodle out all the best set-frankenslotting techniques. -
Just to pipe up with my "Me too!" but an issue of the City Scoop over the summer highlighted patriotic characters and had a gallery of their screen shots. A whole lot of red, white & blue and stars & bars in there.
Blanket prohibitions on the usual "patriotic" theme would be like prohibiting all black "Darky McDarkster the Dark/Dark/Dark Defender" costumes -
Quote:Exactly. Once you're talking lvl 30 IOs, it doesn't really matter how long they take to fill -- once they're filled you need never upgrade them if you don't want to.I'f you're "standing around trying to buy" anything, you're doing it wrong. Take two minutes and think about what you're going to want tomorrow or next week, and put some bids in before you go play the game, go to work, go to bed, whatever. Odds are most of your bids will fill in the interim.
I don't approach using IOs as something where I need to fill every slot with an IO at 25 or even 30. Once I can use SOs, I fill my slots with them and then start placing lowball bids in WW or crafting the IOs I happen to get the bits for as random drops. Every now and then just scroll down my receipe list, see what's white and decide if it's something I can use. My Controller is now level 32 and is about half IO's now and half SOs. When I bought SOs at level 27, it cost me a million influence. Upgrading my SOs at 32 to level 35 SOs cost me about 800k (even with the much higher cost of SOs at that levels). Out of curiousity, I averaged the slots I had IOs in and estimated a 600,000 inf savings on not having to refill those slots. By the time I hit lvl 40 SOs, almost all of my slots should be filled and it'll cost me almost nothing.
The thing is, placing those bids in WW costs me nothing aside from a little inf tied up and if you're dropping millions in SOs, having 15,000 tied up in salvage bids shouldn't be an issue. Using the drops I get is practically free (minus the lab fees). But I never spend a lot of time on it or spend "hours" trying to build a straight IO build. Heck, I don't spend hours on sets, although I'm sure some people do. -
Already mentioned but my immediate thought was that I doubt Reichsman is soloable, especially with his mini-legion of Doom. I'd think you'd run out of gun charges before you ground him down and then that'd be that. Maybe he wouldn't ever kill you but you'd both stare at one another for a long, long time.
If he can be soloed, I wouldn't want to watch it. Sounds pretty dull -
Ok, here's my Mids so people can start telling me in earnest how gimp I am... heh
Ok, I kid. I will say that I'm a casual player so I picked powers pretty much as they sounded nifty and stayed within my Natural character concept. Set bonuses are kind of the same -- I'd get one or two as drops and decide to try to expand upon them. I have about 95mil influence on this character so I won't be purpling her out any time soon (that and I'm still lvl 47 anyway). It's sounding more and more like I'll respec out of Combat Jumping unless there's a good argument for keeping it there and I'm not in love with Ignite either so I might drop that for something else. Aside from that, I'm actually pretty happy with my character and just trying to take her up a level rather than straight out min/maxing her. Oh, and finally, the power levels are approximate based on how they're arranged in my enhancement screen. I might be off a level or two especially when I flipped back and forth between pool/archetype powers.
Without further ado...

I've never really played with Mids -- is there an easy way to export character data to Mids or do I need to enter everything in manually? I can see where it'd be useful to post my current build but damned if I know when Slug went from being 4 slotted to being six slotted
And, of course, thanks for the help so far. Learning a bit. -
My AR/Dev is up to level 47 now and trying to up my defense a little. I have Cloaking Device four slotted with an IO Defense, IO EndRx, LotG Defense and LotG+7.5. At 47, on something of a lark, I decided to pick up Combat Jumping. It only has one IO Defense in it at the moment but I'm not sure how useful it is.
Is CJ worth it as a "defensive" power? There's a thread in the Player Help section about slotting it and most people seemed to say it's not worth it except as a set mule. Is my best bet for Defense solely to build up IO set bonuses? I have plenty enough respecs from Vet rewards, etc that I can drop out of CJ if it's worthless but thought I'd get some opinions.
Just to round out the information, my major set bonuses are 5/6ths of a Sting of the Manticore, 5/6ths of a Positron's Blast and a full set of Gaussians. That's about it. I do have Body Armor from the Munitions pool but that's resistance, not defense if I remember correctly. Due to character concept, I'm avoiding Hover. -
What it does is establish a baseline of power you know you aren't going to dip beneath. You can enhance further at your leisure without concern that your enhancements are going to go yellow/red. I have characters in the 47-50 range who will make a lvl 50 DMG IO when I have the stuff in my pocket but I don't have to worry about still having some 35's filling slots.
-
I don't think people really wonder why someone wouldn't want to spend billions purpling out their slots. It's the people who won't even use Common IOs over SOs which cause the head-scratchers. Judging from this thread, folks all have their own justification for it and that's cool but purples don't factor heavily into most people's builds, period.

I can tell you how I solo:
I run at (-1/x3) for mob level/team size. I used to have bosses deactivated but have since allowed them into my missions -- they're not as scary as they used to be now that I'm comfortable with my character and have some defense.
Go near mass of minions (not too close), toss out a handful of caltrops between you and them (careful not to aggro) and plant a trip mine. With the defiance bonus from the mine, unload Full Auto and Flamethrower. That eliminated most or all of the minions and left the Lt's wounded to be picked off. As they rush you, they get bogged on the 'trops and any who make it over get blown up by the mine. Rinse and repeat.
Bosses I usually open with a snipe alpha strike just to get a dent into them before using the Full Auto/Flamethrower routine.
Edit: Nemesis is a nice change of pace for this since their snipers see through the Cloaking Device and prevent you from setting up the caltrops/mine. Always an adventure with them -

I didn't do anything close to getting 50 on people. I suppose Rose got closer but she started at 44 and ended at 47. I don't know how much that counts.
But now she can do Lady Gray's. Earth for Humans!
More interestingly, I got Pachamama from 24 to 30 so I'm in striking distance of 32 and her pet. Someday I might actually be able to solo things beyond "Stone Cages. Gale. Gale. Gale. Stone Cages. Gale. Gale. Gale..." -
Quote:Again, this is all up to personal preference but I went last night at lvl 26 and put in the following bids:I find trying to craft a common IO with common salvage that for some reason is going for 50K on the market as annoying so I avoid it like the plague.
8x lvl 30 Damage IO @ 1,000
8x Iron @ 500
8x Masterwork Weapon @ 1,000
I wasn't entirely optimistic because Masterworks were going for 25,000 (I think the weekend helped drive prices up) but by the end of the night when I was level 30, I had purchased everything for 20k. Throw in the creation costs and I still saved about 75% versus buying eight lvl 30 SOs and these will never go red on me.
I had actually slotted up all new SOs at 27 because I knew I wanted to play all evening and try to hit 30+. A full array of SOs at that level cost me right around a million influence. Saving 75% of that can mean a lot for a character who isn't being fed influence from an alt, etc. And, again, you don't have to spend another 1.3 at lvl 35 and 1.75 million at level 40, etc.
I don't personally care how other people enhance themselves but some people who think it's too much of a hassle/expense might find they can save a lot of time and influence by taking the plunge to at least common IOs. -
Huh... probably just a coincidence but I locked up tonight trying to enter Steel Canyon from the Midnighter's Club. Had to quit out from the task manager and restart the game to get back in.
-
Picked up a few levels on my AR/Dev blaster, getting her from 44 to 47. Not really DXP related but I got into a group taking out Lusca as well so that was fun. Did a couple task forces including an ITF which we actually failed. We started with only seven people, highest level was 46 (me at the time) and lost a person before hitting Rommy. We just didn't have it in us to whittle Rommy down and, after a couple wipes, we called it. Oh well, I was mainly in it for the experience anyway.
Took my Earth/Storm controller from 26 to 30. Was hoping to make 32 and get my pet but that didn't happen. Still, there seems to be a sharp curve in the mid-late twenties where I was feeling more and more capable as a charater. Definately something of a late bloomer but at least the next two levels don't feel so unbearable before I can actually start putting out a little DPS beyond Gale.
Took a Peacebringer up to level 10 with a quick sewer run. Not especially feeling the love for the PB but I'll try it again a little later. -
People are going about this all wrong. It's not that you need to give your offers to a wider audience, but to a more exclusive one.
Next time you want to give away free art, keep it at just sending me a private message. -
This game is so easy that, short of someone actively harming the team (perhaps by causing wipes via training mobs), I can't imagine getting worked up over a gimped build. I've seen enough people with standard builds still slack their way through a team that I'd worry more about whether they're at least trying to contribute.
It might be worth asking them privately about their build because maybe they're a casual player who never thought a particular power sounded sexy enough to try. But to kick them? Nah. -
Quote:I don't see these two things being mutually exclusiveYou know, I thought CR was high with the whole Duck/Boot thing on the Fenian arts you did... But now I'm seeing a Bunny (or maybe a chipmunk?) in that pic with either wings or a cape flowing behind it...
Great work so far, Wassy! -
I was running a Manticore last night and three people in my team were talking about how their SOs were all going red as they leveled up during the taskforce. I thought about mentioning IOs but then figured the people probably weren't stupid and they knew about IOs, they just had their own reasons for not yet converting. So, anyway, that's three other people who use SOs.
Although... was this a free resub weekend? Maybe one of them came from an era before IOs. Still, I doubt all three were ignorant of them.
