The real problem why EU populations are low?

    Threads like this.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    It's really not.

I highly doubt someone who isn't interested in the game is going to go looking on its forums and that someone who is interested in it will base whether or not they'll play it on what people post.

Heck, a lot of people trying it out won't even know that there IS a forum.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree with this. The reason I got into the game was because I read a favourable 4 page review in a gaming magazine and it ticked all the boxes at the time. I didnt look at the forums before signing up. Heck i played for 5 months before i even signed up for them.

These threads are, in my humble opinion, not going to be turning away the number of potential players that you believe.

I believe that the game suffers from being relatively unknown. I know plenty of "gamers" who've barely heard of the old girl. One can imagine that alot of potential players who then hear about the game are then turned away either by the game's age (whether it looks dated or not) or its niche concept - superheroes (no matter how encompassing the game actually is).

All in my opinion of course.
  2. I've said it before and i'll say it again, one of the great things about this game is that you can create nearly any type of character as a hero/villain. Want a evil Viking sucked in from the past to wreak havoc? Done. Want a super intelligent robot created by scientific genius? Easy. Mutant with super powers, hard bloke with a gun, victim of a scientific experiment? Check, check, check.

What I'm saying is, want your BS/Shield scrapper to be a fantasy hero, you can. But a quick change of a costume (or a quick reroll if you prefer) and suddenly its a completely different character/style of character.

This game caters for all in that respect, fantasy, sci-fi, Sin city style characters etc etc. Pretty much the only real limitation, thanks to weapon customisation, is down to your own imagination; what backstory can you com up with to justify your powersets/costumes.

anyone else still remember the old enemy defeat poses all layed out like starfish then they added the NPC ragdoll effects.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hehe, yeah. I remember showing my mate the game not long after I started playing. He said something on the lines of, "It looks good, but it would be awesome if there was some ragdoll." I was like, "Yeah it would be cool but it will never happen." Boy did I feel a fool...

so allow me to defend my self from the pedants!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Get a dictionary and look up what 'pedant' means.

    [ QUOTE ]
By "spandex" powers I meant the types of powers that would be suitable for the stereotypical spandex-clad superhero that the average bloke on the street would think of.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes, actually, the two people you are calling 'pedants' had decided that that was what you meant.

What we are actually confused about is that you claim these non-weapon powers are uunder-represented. I fail entirely to see how they are, particularly after the proliferation that has gone on so far.

'Weapon' sets are also pretty much restricted to melee ATs, which are not exactly the majority.

If you can think of some powersets which don't exist which fit into a non-weapon form and could actually be viably implemented, then please suggest them, but I can't help but thinking that you're actually totally kidding yourself here.

Now, regarding pedantry... this is pedantry: [ QUOTE ]
Bishop, Gambit and Forge being the ones that spring to mind

    [/ QUOTE ]

And Wolverine. Claws is generally classified as a weapon set in CoX, Wolverine is a Claw/Regen/Invulnerability Scrapper.

Just to be I15 relevent, I predict further power proliferation in I15 which will make your weapon-bias statement even less true.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Wow, what a response.

You seem to have gotten me mixed up with someone else. I wasn't arguing for the presence of a weapon-bias, that was AstroBear i believe. I was using very broad divisions to illustrate that every type of hero and their associated powersets were well represented in the game. I have not called for further powersets to be added (i did suggest powersets that are absent as mere examples of the fact that further weapon sets could justifiably be added).

I'm also not sure that the tone of your post was called for. It came across as rather aggressive, I hope this wasn't intended

tl;dr version: whilst i did use the sweeping generalisation of "spandex" powersets (which i admit is a category that exists solely in my head) i never claimed these sets were "uunder-represented" (sic).

    *nods*

This is what I was asking. I'm just wondering what powers the person you were referring to was referring to.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I would also like to know....

    [/ QUOTE ]

Whilst I am not the one quoted, I think it was me who used the phrase originally (i think), so allow me to defend my self from the pedants!

By "spandex" powers I meant the types of powers that would be suitable for the stereotypical spandex-clad superhero that the average bloke on the street would think of. It was of course a massively sweeping generalisation and there are plenty of exceptions that I am well aware of. I was just trying to illustrate a divide between the types of heroes one sees in this game. It was merely a device to illustrate a point rather than a cast iron category of powers.

NB. I made no reference to Golden, Silver, or any other colour of Age of comics. I did however make reference to X-Men, and it probably is fair to say, based on the nature of the X-Men that weapons are in the minority (Bishop, Gambit and Forge being the ones that spring to mind).

Anyway, I have derailed this thread enough. Back to speculation and thoughts on I15.

For myself, I am interested to see that they are trying to get 3 issues out in around 5 months. Ambitious perhaps. But, at the moment, I am not actually playing CoH (WoW has actually managed to make a class that appeals to me (new enhancement shamans not DeathKnights for those interested)) and I think it would take something special to pull me back as things stand. I had played the game for around 3 years by the time i moved pretty much permanently to WoW and it seems to be due to a feeling of having seen everything in game already. Now I'm aware that new arcs and powersets are being added in i13, and i probably will have a quick glance at them but it just feels much of the same.

Maybe the MA will draw my attention for longer. Beyond that there would have to be something special to pull me back properly (although I'n still subbed so it doesnt really matter in terms of revenue for NCsoft )

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they shouldn't put in more non-weapon melee powersets, but too criticise a game for having too many choices (sets you are not in any way obligated to take) is a bit weird.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Too many of one sector - not enough of a more relevant sector - That's my complaint

    [/ QUOTE ]

I understand that. And whilst i feel for you that there aren't enough powersets that appeal to you, to complain that there are too many other powerses that appeal to other ppl is unfair on those that play them!
  7. [ QUOTE ]
    ...and another thing!

Other than Thor I don't recall too many "Mace" superheroes and I can't think of any mainstream battle axe wielding superheroes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This would be a valid point if we were only allowed to recreate existing comic book heroes. Just because there aren't many weapon based heroes within the literature doesn't make those players who have character ideas that involve those powersets any less valid. I, for one, have Mace, BS and Axe toons but still haven't thought of an interesting character idea for an Martial Arts scrapper despite the number of them in the literature.

    [ QUOTE ]
I do understand what you are saying but I feel there are "spandex" (and therefore more superheor relevant) powers missing when pretty much all the weapon based ones I can think of are covered.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I want nunchucks, staves (its good enough for gambit), spears, brass knuckles etc etc. There are plenty of melee weapon sets that could still be added.

Plenty of non-weapon sets too, don't get me wrong!

But this game's universe does welcome magic based characters. Whilst their traditional home is WoW type games they still fit in here.

To b honest, that's what's nice about the character creation here, if you can justify it in your bio, it's legitimate!
  8. [ QUOTE ]

So would you say having the option of being able to dress your elf in spandex but you didn't have would enhance the immersive S&S nature of a game like WoW?
    have have to

    [/ QUOTE ]

Frankly that's a stupid analogy. WoW exists in a world where only sword an sorcery exists. Spandex wouldn't and couldn't exist there. The CoH universe is far more varied and allows for a much more varied type of hero. There is space for the Rambo character, the Jean Grey-like toon and Merlin to all co-exist in the same team. This is purely a city of Heroes after all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they shouldn't put in more non-weapon melee powersets, but too criticise a game for having too many choices (sets you are not in any way obligated to take) is a bit weird. That said, i'd play a street fighting set for sure!

And no, I don't think my comment can be used to legitmise an Accountancy powerset. Whilst weapons can be used to fight crime, a in depth knowledge of UK accounting systems will only get you as far as investigating fraud. Trust me, I'm an Accountant. ;-)
  9. Exactly.

Now, my own personal opinion is that i would like a few more spandex hero type superpowers. But that's because I was brought up on a diet of X-Men and when I started playing the game I pretty much equated heroes to that type of character. But I'm well aware that there are plenty of players that want more natural based powersets (dual pistols anyone?). You cant please everyone all of the time, and there are always going to be powersets that people want added whether they be weapon based, magic based, or more "traditional" superpowers.

Oh, by mixing "normal" powersets with powersets that may be more at home in X-Men or whatever, you can easily create a character that will be at home in that context whilst still wielding a weapon (for example).
  10. just because there are that many powersets does not mean that 35% of all heroes actually use those sets.

The point being, if you don't want to play a weapon based (non "super" if you will) hero, you don't have to. The choice is there for you to make. It's nice for a game to give you such options.

    AR/Rad

I am inspired to make an AR/rad myself now.

I really want an archery/radiation corruptor for the delights of a fast recharging, scourging rain of arrows onto a patch of debuffed enemies, but the similar nuke-light of full auto should work just as well, despite the longer rooting.

But this should be a fun combo, and i see much synergy as long as you are careful about the knockbacks.
  12. already took life drain, thought a self heal might be a necessity with a secondary without any heals. Plus, i tend to generate a lot of agro!
  13. Cheers for the advice. I think I'll skip it, its seems to be far too situational to be worthwhile, and the the debuff does not seem to last long enough to justify losing all endurance (and therefore toggles) for.

    Thanks again
  14. Synapse.

I want his chick magnet red and blue tux!
  15. Whilst I'm inclined to agree with you, since with his experience revitalising the comics seems most likely, I hope that it isnt the case. In my mind, they are unlikely to make any money off such a venture. The comics would not have the market penetration with comic circles to encourage new players to the game, and if the sold the comics (an idea I find unlikely based on the prior free distribution) they would only be bought by current avid players, probably in quantities insufficient to justify his salary.

I hope that he is, instead, involved with adding to the game in some way. Character development for CoX2 mayhaps??
  16. As if it weren't lucky enough that some of you received character sketches from David Nakayama at Omega Sektor MiniCon, you can claim to have your character drawn by a genuine CoH concept artist.

That's right, David has been hired by NCNC as a concept artist, taking their total up to 3 (up from 0 a couple of years ago). David is a big hire, having previously drawn comics for Marvel as well as doing some of the City Of Heroes comics.

Source - Massively but revealed at HeroCon (sorry if this was posted elsewhere, did have a quick gander).

This leaves me thinking, what are they building up to?

I wasn't aware that farming was questionable content. I suspect that things to report will be more along the line of racial, sexist and morally questionable.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Agreed, I think reporting a farm as inapropiate content is more likely to get the reporter suspended.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If done persistently. But yes, don't like an arc cos it's blatantly designed for farming? Thumbs down is as far as you can go I imagine, and then, you're just as likely to have someone who values that mission as an arc thumbs up it. Joys of democracy.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Don't like an arc that is for farming don't do it then.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But the thumbs up/down ratings are a display of opinion. If a player (and I am not suggesting that these are my views) hates farming, they are certainly entitled to rate a player-created arc designed for farming down. As I hinted above, farmers that will undoubtedly find worth in such missions can then rate against this.

My actual opinion on this: I wouldn't rate down a farming "arc" even if it is not my thing, I wouldn't play it. I will be rating down arcs that fail in some way, most likely poor writing.

  19. Muahahaha, my Westin Phipps tribute arc shall soon become reality!...or virtual reality at least.

mmm hostile hossies, so many ideas there.
  20. To make it even worse, all the merits have gone to the Americans.
  21. I just want Rain of Arrows with a chance to Scourge! Is that so wrong?
