Hey man, I kind of have an idea of how the business world works. People in the programming or art department are not going to give two damns about microtransactions. That's a marketing decision and comes from other marketing executives higher up on the food chain. This kind of scheming does (and obviously) go on.
  2. Ah, Nethergoat, my arch nemesis.

So you play an RPG, but you don't want to have to level up to level 35 to have to access Roman costume pieces? I think that's a far price to pay and a part of the natural leveling process. In fact, almost all RPG's out there require the player to jump through hoops for a special weapon or costume piece. Don't play an RPG if you don't want to grind, they're all mostly constructed around that concept.

Veteran rewards I have a gripe with as well. I think that is wrong. I'm of the belief that we all pay a flat monthly fee for this game and we should all be given the same things free of charge. Especially when there are seldom any new free costumes and there is a widening gap in quality between the super booster items and the boxed items. Yes, this stuff should be free for those two reasons alone. I would rather take the time to naturally level to make my Roman character, maybe put him in a leather looking costume until then, than to have to pay money just so I can make that character. That way, we could all be Romans if we want to and not just those with the cash to do so. Most costumes are unlocked with maybe an hour or two's investment in this game and you really want to pay money for something you can make a part of your game play instead? That's not very logical.

By the way, the true option would be to allow people to pay for items you would have to normally grind for. What you're actually describing is a mandatory opt in if you want said part that should be free. Look at it this way. Paragon studios created that costume part by paying an artist to create the part with the monthly fee that I already pay. In my mind that Super Booster is already paid for and therefore should be free because the artist created it on my dime already. I'm essentially paying $25 a month sometimes for that content upgrade that I was already promised from the get go. Sounds like a raw deal to me.

I couldn't agree more. At this point they're just ripping off players dumb enough to buy everything thrown at them. In my mind a booster pack should provide options and powers that go way beyond the bounds and needs of normal players. Costume change emotes: yes. Possible jetpack costume options: yes. Regular emotes, auras and regular not so special costume pieces: no. Those costume pieces and auras should be free for everyone. The microtransaction crap with this game is beginning to get out of hand.

I would rather that a player has to unlock a costume part, that way everyone that plays the game can access said parts.

I can't believe people have been shelling out money for these wastes of cash. The audacity that the developers have is astounding! Why are you all paying for these? Stop spending money on them and maybe they'll get the idea that these minor additions to the game should be free. I regret paying for the one super booster I bought (technology) and I've not bought one since (discounting the G.R. pack as I felt it was part of the expansion).

I'm happy I'm quitting this game for good this time around. The game has steadily been going down hill with crap like this going on and players just lapping it up.

Keep this in mind everyone: NC Soft just laid off a few employees, some that have been around for quite some time. They're now releasing sub par item packs or separating certain items and auras that I think were originally intended for release with G.R. such as the party pack. Half the emotes in that pack for instance were already demonstrated by N.P.C.'s in Praetoria, but I digress. If you ask me, I think they realize with DCU coming out that they're going to be in trouble and the policy's now "cash in while we can". The recent packs have been coming out very quickly one after another when before there would be spans of months between them. Pair that fact with the quality we've been given with the last few and I think I'm pretty on with my assessment.

I think this game has maybe two years tops left in it and by no means do I think that the servers are going to go dark relatively anytime soon, but so far we've seen a huge decline in quality and delays up to wazoo with promised content. Although Going Rogue sold decently, I don't think they made quite the turnaround as NC Soft has expected. Mark my words everyone, 2 years tops. My guess would be a year after the release of DCU if that game delivers the way I think it is going to.

Please don't give me, "Well, after large expansions people get laid off." Well, if the game delivered as they thought it would those people would still have jobs. The circumstances BaB left under are not a good sign whatever they may be.

Stop paying for these boosters. We pay enough as it is without ever having any major content upgrades. I know Blizzard is a huge company with huge resources, but regardless Paragon Studios should keep up. CoX is a relatively small game when compared to other MMO's. I know they give us free updates and content here and there, but what we have now only amounts to what CoX should have been from the beginning other than the bare bones MMO of what it was when it started. G.R. shows just that bare bones mentality. They should have included and had ready the end game content when G.R. went live, but they just didn't deliver like they always do.

I know I'm pissing off a lot of people here. Let me just say that the devs. do seem sincere in their efforts. In fact, I would wager that all these pathetic little microtransactions are the work of the marketing department or the higher ups at NC Soft, not the actual devs. that deal directly with us and the game itself. Still, the policy they've had of late makes me angry because they are counting on the gullibility of their player base.

Give us some cool new costumes devs. without having to pay for them. 3-5 with an expansion doesn't cut it for me. I was expecting way more with how huge G.R. was supposed to be. This was a huge let down in my book.
  5. Noble Savage, you're the art director and I realize you don't want to piss any players off, but you're right with your gut instinct. From an artistic and consistency point of view, you need to replace all the current old costume pieces (hair in particular) with at the very least new skins. The old pieces are really clashing with the new at this point and I'm find that I am no longer using the old pieces at all in almost every one of my characters because they look so bad.

Hair, helmets, half helmets, full helmets, full masks, medieval helmets, supernatural faces; these are all in dire need of an update. I'm sure that if all you're going to do is update the textures and make the pieces better you'll have very few complaints. People would have to be insane to leave this game over a graphical improvement and I doubt those that threaten over this would.

If you noticed, the posts are split nearly fifty-fifty on the matter. You're the art director, do what you think is right.
  6. You know, it just occurred to me too, to placate those who keep wanting more and more Martial Arts animations, you could always take directly from real martial arts.

I'd say give them two complete and most importantly, authentic, martial arts disciplines for each power and I doubt you'll ever be hounded about it again. I think what people are complaining about is that the Martial Arts set lacks any distinction as any real, existing martial art.

Seriously, just Youtube different disciplines and list the new animations under whatever style it is. In my opinion there are three commonly seen martial arts styles seen in movies:

    Kung Fu (flashy)
Taekwondo (kick based) The game Fatal Fury has a character named Kim Kaphwan who practices Taekwondo. I'd suggest you check out his moves for some ideas here.

    Goju-ryu (very basic and direct)

You may have never heard of Goju, but it is a Japanese form of martial arts that is the basis for the martial arts training of soldiers in America and the foundation of many new fighting systems in use today. When you see soldiers in movies attacking someone with "karate", it is usually some form of Goju. Goju is said to be one of the most practical forms of martial arts out there. It is not flashy like other martial arts because it is a form that is meant to do one thing only: injure somebody. I took this for a few years when I was a kid and I loved it. I've actually been thinking of going back to Goju if I have time.

Seriously, just take the animations directly from a source and work them into every power. Make sure Taekwondo has heavy kick based animations, Kung Fu has flashy attacks, and make Goju very straightforward and exacting. I'd suggest a rename of some powers and descriptions (make them generic and somewhat more ambiguous sounding) to allow for the new animations.

Again, make sure you use authentic moves this time around. The current animations are very generic and are not distinctive of any one style.
  7. A new Rest animation would be nice. I was thinking a panting, hands on knees, bent over like a marathon runner would do after a race. Make the breathing look labored. Youtube any runner and fast forward to after a race to get an idea. Make sure our characters are staring out into space as they are doing this. (Edit: Didn't even notice other people are in agreement here. I think this would be a welcome change to the kneeling down. If replaced the kneel animation would make for a great emote.)

I think the Dark series of attacks and defenses, specifically Dark Melee and Dark Blast. These are some of the oldest sets in City Of Heroes and are in serious need of an update. The tentacles for instance look like some of the oldest graphics in game.

For that matter, if I were in the animation department, I'd aim to update the oldest and choppiest looking power sets (both graphically and animation wise). User feedback is nice, but I'm sure you guys already have an idea of what exactly needs updating. A list would be (and I don't even play these A.T.'s, they're just the worst graphically in my opinion and need an update):

Universal one handed or stylized animations for all blast sets. These are some of the most robotic in the game. I agree with the user who suggested changes to Psychic Blast. Just make new arm animations or give the character a more aggressive look while performing moves. This would be one of the easiest to give new animations too.
    Dark Melee
    Dark Blast
Mercenaries (The entire set for Masterminds. Very poor character design here. Doubtful this will get done because it is a complicated set.)
Broad Sword, Mace, and Axe power sets (They need differentiation. Two handing axes and maces would be nice. I was surprised when I tried Axe out that it shared the same animations from two other power sets.)
    Katana
Assault Rifle (Possibly, but I don't know how you'd go about it. This set has some of the most lackluster animations out there.)

Finally, the thing I would want most would be a real comic book inspired change to Energy Blast. I'm talking Marvel's Havoc inspired plasma blasts that look like a single beam of energy, somewhat like what is out there for the Robots power set.

Energy Melee for that matter could use more of a "bleeding energy" effect in lieu of the "pom poms". Kind of like how Iron Fist had in the nineties. Looks somewhat like flames, but not. Think how sometimes Cable's eye glow is depicted as streaking energy instead of glowing, but for fists.
  8. Wow, thank you everyone! You guys are so nice. Defenders seem like the cool people here in the forums LOL. Well, I was thinking of respecifying out of Gale when I hit 24. I love it, but it seems like it would suck even slotted out going up against lieutenants on up. From what I can tell, it's a good low level solo power and that's about it.

As for 02 boost, I have 3 empty slots in it now. I want to take it just for teaming, but should it even be slotted?

As for what I decided skipping so far it would be Zap (I'm a defender, not a blaster), Gale, potentially O2 boost as I find it quite underwhelming even though I'm at level 10. I just see it not being that great. I don't know if I should take Thunderclap or Tesla Cage. I guess I can take both since I don't want Snow Storm?

I'm with Stormy Darkness on this one and I never cared much for -fly as my defender is a flier and he can just as well fly towards any bad guys and lock their keisters down. I don't think I'm going to be taking Snow Storm so I have some room to breathe as far as power choices go. Any thoughts on PPP's?
  9. Thanks for the feedback guys. I am definitely taking Tornado because it just seems so damned cool. Also, I was wondering how I should be slotting a defender. Obviously for the primary I should be slotting for whatever buff/debuff the power grants. For electric, I was thinking, where available, should I be slotting for -endurance?

Thanks again for all the help so far. Please excuse the newbie questions as this is my first defender ever. I typically play tanks and blasters.
  10. Hi guys! Just rolled a Storm/Elec defender and I was wondering what powers were skippable, other than Gale, as from what I read it seems I may have chosen a power set where there isn't much to skip. Pointers much appreciated. Thanks!
  11. Thanks so much Tux, that is so much better than the current build I have worked out. I might consider Ice Mastery in the end, but the one you made would be just as fine.'

    Thanks again!
  12. Well, in retrospect as to my build, I've seen worse on the forums, but I'm pretty much going for an A.O.E machine which is why I picked all the A.O.E./cone powers.

I wouldn't mind seeing what the build would look like with Empty Clips and Piercing Rounds taken out and the two fire melee powers added in.

I'm kinda set with taking Fire Mastery because I want to see what it's like to have Rise Of The Phoenix. I would be interested to see what Ice or Electric Mastery would look like though.

Mind giving me a Mids run down with a data chunk to load into my copy of Mids?

Thank you for the help by the way. The A.T.'s all play and slot so differently that it's hard to get a handle on a build unless I've played it for awhile, and frankly, I don't have as much time to invest in this game as I once had to figure out how to slot new power sets I haven't played before.

And please, please, please, go easy on the purples. I can manage to get about 1 to 1.5 billion together for a build, but any more than that is going to take way too much time to earn... Unless you feel like donating to a hero in need?

It is sad, but true. That comment can be applied to many facets of modern every day life; trading privacy and freedoms for convenience and protection, but that's a whole other animal to discuss.

If you read about the future of targeted demographic advertising, which many companies are already doing (you see it on youtube if you haven't deleted your history), you'll begin to realize that the future in ad revenue is hyper targeted advertising to the individual user. That means that game developers, websites, retailers and the like will be collecting as much information on an individual user, some personal and private, to improve their profit margins. Vivindi, by extension of Blizzard, is looking to cash in on selling user information such as habits, class playing preference, login frequency, users on friends list, etc., to demographic/advertising companies. Human beings are in a sad state of affairs when they've become absolutely nothing but a unit of monetary value, which we as C.O.H players already are to a degree.

I'm very happy about the dissent over the Real I.D. system, but I honestly think what's going to happen is that Blizzard will wait until Starcraft II and Cataclysm are released and then implement a modified form of Real I.D. In the end Vivindi wins.

You should all have no doubt that Vivindi and Real I.D. were already in talks about modifying the Real I.D. system on the first day of the press release. I also have no doubt that Vivindi and Real I.D. already created a back up plan well in advance in the event that they would be met with resistance from their player base. In one way or another, Real I.D. is coming to those willing to become nothing more than impressed surveyors, not knowing exactly what information is being gathered. Keep in mind the shady practices of Facebook that have been reported on. Lord knows what social networks like Facebook are doing with personal information that hasn't been reported or leaked to the press.

You don't go to that extent, make an announcement like that and then just go 'oh, all that money we spent and all those deals we made? We'll just scrap those.' Sure, it might happen sometimes, but it really has to be in the company's best interests to do so (BP, I'm looking at you).

They won't back off from this, like have others have already commented. Cryptic felt the backlash of the players over paid expansions, but I again would bet good money the sharks will be circling again to say 'well, now it's been a year and now you should pay for a paid expansion'.

    Watch this space, I say.

    S.
Oz, I am so on your side with this. I have family in the corporate world and believe me, from what I'm told with situations like this, it is only a temporary situation.

I don't think anyone realizes that there have been contracts signed already as a company would not make such an announcement without lining its ducks up in a row. Furthermore, Blizzard would not have pushed for implementing such a system if they felt that they could not profit from such a venture. Vivindi, Blizzard's parent corporation, is a huge mega-corporation and the Blizzard division is a large source of Vivindi's revenue. I'm with you 100% that users will see the implementation of Real I.D. in some shape or form not too far down the line.

There is money to be made with such a system and it is highly doubtful that such a large corporation like Blizzard would just shelve any and all proposed plans when at first they were of the attitude, "Do what we say or don't play." They've successfully managed to fool the player base that believes this is the end of Real I.D.
  15. Is anyone getting the feeling here that Blizzard is playing the role of pre-school teacher by essentially having users' real names displayed as a means to "play nice"? I'm frankly disgusted at the audacity of this move. I don't think Blizzard has taken into account that their player base varies in ages and that the younger, nonworking player base has the potential to do serious harm. I'm just thinking right now of some 4chan W.O.W. player posting a person's name up on /b for revenge.

Blizzard's asking for a P.R. nightmare with this. Also, what if you're a professional or you are pursuing a certain career where image is important? All it would take is for the user to post one thread and another person looking to hire/work with him to google his name and lo and behold the gamer's name pops up in the Blizzard forums.

ArcticFahx shares the same sentiment that I have:

With this change at WoW, I won't be using the forums there if I do get a full retail account. Not because I don't want to have my real life associated with gaming, or because I'm ashamed of it, but because gaming has a hugely negative stereotype and going into teaching, that stereotype can really screw me over.
At 26, City Of Heroes is the only game I've played in seven years, but I don't let anyone know I play it. Why? Much like ArcticFahx, I'm not ashamed of playing it, but I'm currently pursuing art and music and both fields are very image oriented. As he said, there is a negative stereotype with gaming unfortunately, and I for one cannot afford to have my image ruined considering the career path I'm pursuing. It's one thing to have the job then admit to playing after establishing oneself, it's a completely different animal if one's only on the path to establish oneself. It could make things all the more onerous in the gamer's pursuit for a professional career.
  16. Hey there, I'm new to using DP/Fire and I'm trying to make a build, but I know I'm gimping myself here. I'd like to try and keep the powers I have chosen, but as far as slotting's concerned, I'm pretty retarded. Need some help, and also, try to keep it within a 2 billion inf. build. If it goes over that amount please don't go over by too much.

I'm looking to go for A.O.E. damage, defense, and slows. I honestly am at a complete loss at how I should be proceeding to slot this guy. Again, please keep the attack powers I've chosen as that is the play style I prefer.

    Thanks!

  17. I've noticed that my build is slightly underpowered. If I'm going to invest in a second build then I figure I'd want it to be the best one I could possibly have.

So that being said, post your best ever DB/WP Mids Builds! Please supply a data chunk!
  18. Pine, that's a good build, thank you. I think I get the point of how to use him now. I think my initial build is going to be just that until I can afford all of those Touch Of Death enhancements in there which, phew, is gonna cost a pretty penny. I now see how Shadow Meld works and that there are only small gaps of time when it will be down. Thanks. And again, definitely going to use yours as my serious, *** kicking build and the other build just as the secondary/starter build.

Unfortunately, it takes awhile to get a feel for an archetype and then to slot it. I've never played a scrapper or stalker and have had no idea how to go about slotting it. Thanks again man!

I want you .gif by the way.

Edit: On second thought, yours might be cheaper.
  19. Thanks so much, Siolfir, for the input. I'm going to definitely shuffle the order of the powers around. My Stalker's at level 17 or so at the moment so I'm a while off from this build, but since it's only going to cost me around 200 million to make I figured what the hell, I can be obstinate about keeping the Presence Pool, L.O.L.

And Klaw, I do get your point and my second and more expensive build will be using Soul Mastery most likely in conjunction with the Fighting Pool minus Cobra Strike. Although I've been reading mixed things about Cobra Strike and have added a stun set into it as well as Crane kick to see if stun-locking an E.B. would be possible.

That being said, is the regeneration and the resistances and defense okay for now? Decent, could do better? I do not want to be completely gimping myself here.

Thanks again guys, I'm learning a lot here. The guides seem to be very outdated and don't seem to give much insight on what I should or shouldn't take. They more or less give an overview of the powers and tell you how you should slot it if you want to take it, no definitive take it: yes, or take it: no.

And Klaw, I'm saving making a Mastermind for Going Rogue :P !

P.S. Guys, this is going to sound horrible because of how useless I am on a team until 50, but I never really slot much or care for power choices until level 50. Then I just use my veteran respec. and spec. in my build... Don't kill me!
  20. Phuerton Skuerto, my first character ever; my baby. My defenses all around are equal, but the resistances are higher than what I've seen for smashing and lethal. This is optimized for recharge and for nova (I haven't seen anyone else's nova on here broaching 700, heh heh heh). Believe me, you'll be a recharging machine and you'll be able to pop-off nova more than a few times in a single mission. The knock-back is insane on him by the way, so be mindful other players. When I first completed my build, the next team I was on was in awe of how destructive he was. It was an explosion fest. Hope this helps.

  21. Oh really now? You know honestly I just wanted to see what it would be like to cause fear at will. I've seen the presence pool used only once a long time ago when an S.G. mate was using it on his scrapper. It looked really fun, so again, this build is just to tool around with it. If it's that big of a no-no, I'm taking you'd suggest Soul Mastery or the Fighting Pool?

On a side note, I swapped out Combat Jumping with Moment Of Glory at level 49. I figured why am I taking Combat Jumping for a measly addition of 1% to 2% extra defense and slight maneuverability? So I broke down and went for M.O.G.

So, any other suggestions? Is the regeneration and the defense alright at least or is there still much to be desired? And thanks Klaw!
  22. Admittedly, I have no idea what I'm doing with this guy. I need to know if this is a decent build as I so far have him 25% slotted into this build. Any changes or tweaks are much appreciated! By the way, if it's at the least an okay build for what it is, please say so. If it is really horrible then I'll change it. There are infamy issues too as this is my first villain ever, so I can't make an extremely costly build as of yet.

    Thanks again!

P.S. I know many of you are going to say that Mace Mastery is a no-no with Dual Blades. I do realize the animation swap is very slow, but part of the build is for fun. I will appreciate input on a second monster P.V.E. build. I guess all that I'm really asking is; is this in the least a viable build or am I really doing myself that much of a disservice playing this build?

  23. Firstly, I just want to know if this is at the very least a "decent" build. I only have one other villain that isn't even fully I.O.'ed so I'm not going to be able to make this guy a beast yet. My main concern is P.V.E. as I do not P.V.P. He is a M.A./Regen. Stalker.

I wanted to take the presence pool because I'm tired at the moment of making somewhat cookie cutter guys. It's always the same power pools for ultra survivability. I will be making an alternate build when I have the resources. That being said, I figured fear effects could be useful when I drop out of hide after my Assassin's Strike when soloing or on a small team. I know once an enemy's hit, that's it with fear, so on large teams it may not work so well. I really just wanted to try the powers out and incorporate them into a build.

I really want to know if I have the regeneration side of things right. And I know the resistances and defense is somewhat lacking, but again, I don't want to be having to slave away doing strike forces for merits so I can sell some recipes. I figured that this build is well under about 250 million which is great in my opinion. I've never played anything but an energy/energy blaster and a S.S./Invuln. tanker that were invincible; they were well over 4 billion each to slot, however, and I do not have the resources red side to do so.

Regeneration is a mystery to me. So any input on my build would be much appreciated. And no, I didn't take Revive and Moment Of Glory as they both seemed pretty useless to me. Also, if you can point me in the direction for an alternate build, please do so, regardless of cost for later on. I don't have much a clue as to what I'm doing with this guy. I just need to know if it's "okay for now".

    Thanks guys!

  24. Costume complaints aside, am I the only one that sees this set as a precursor to The Resistance style armor for player use? It seems Mr. Nakayama is performing an experiment here...
  25. In comic books, mutants are synonymous with Marvel and in particular, the X-Men. I'm sure that most of the player base here can agree with me on this issue. Although the new models for the mutant pack are nice, they are not what I would associate with what anyone at all was expecting.

I thought we would've at least gotten a short, smooth type fur a la Wolfsbane or Night Crawler. Also, new hand and feet types a la Night Crawler with his three fingers and two toes. I don't want fox heads or generic werewolves running around, reenacting the animal orgy scene from the Val Kilmer version of "The Island Of Dr. Moreau", but a slight bestial/weird look was what I thought we would be getting. There were so many established characters with unique looks (not necessarily mutants either) to have gotten inspiration from. A few would've been:

    Nightcrawler
    Apocalypse
    Mystique (movie version)
    Wolfsbane
    Marrow
Skin (large weird hands and jaw like his would've been cool)
    Beast
Husk (diamond skin and long, and I mean long, claws)
    The Swamp Thing
    The Toxic Crusader
    Mr. Sinister
    Sabertooth
Chamber (and other cool auras and character effects like psionic daggers or halos like Jean Grey or Psilocke. Single eye energy aura's that bleed energy like Cable's would've been fricking awesome!)
    Warlock (techno-organic alien version)

I just don't get how you could've possibly come up with the designs you did with all you had available to work from. You must've not read Marvel comics growing up, huh?

The costumes are cool, but they do not fit the mold for "Mutant Pack" at all.

P.S. The organic sword would've been way cooler as a mutated claw with blades where the animation/weapon would fit over/obscure the hand. I think you missed out on a great opportunity here to try something really different as far as costume and weapon design go.
