  1. To the OP:

It's a time sink, pure and simple. According to the traditional marketing theory of MMOs, a long, tedious grind keeps people subscribing longer.

That makes about as much sense as forcing people to watch 5000 hours of the Nosepicking Channel before they can subscribe to HBO. I'm not saying that there shouldn't be a Nosepicking Channel for those who enjoy such things, only that it's stupid to make it a prerequisite for the rest of us.

I am pretty sure it's not #1. I'm leaning towards #2, but #3 is not completely out of the question either.

Personally I've gotten probably 2-3 VR's, and a few rares. But like most people, it's been mostly uncommons.
    #1 does seem unlikely...and yet...

What if they've found what's broken with the system, but it would take too many programmer hours to correct, by whatever measure their management cares to define as, "too many?" Isn't it normal business practice these days to claim that the problem has been corrected, and hope that perception will make it so?

I'll expand on it a little bit.

Only the players that win Superbowls get Superbowl championship rings. In the NFL, only a small number of players even get a chance to play for one.

In order for that to be a truly accurate comparison to the state of things in CoH, the NFL would have to change things so every player in the league gets to play for one.
An interesting analogy. Let's look at it more carefully.

First, professional sports impose measures like team salary caps and preferred draft picks to keep play at least somewhat competitive among teams. You are arguing that, more or less, "If I can afford to hire the whole all-star team from last year, I should be able to." How far would this argument get you in any sports league worthy of the name? I'm willing to support a measure analogous to salary caps in CoH; are you?

Second, professional sports players get paid to play their game. If they are not good enough, then they get tossed out on their butts. In that environment, earning a serious award is a form of professional recognition comparable to difficult professional achievements in other fields. Whether or not that's the ideal setup, it is the way things work.

Here, WE pay to play the game as a form of entertainment on demand. That completely reverses the dynamic of expectations. For one thing, it makes the notion of "earning" anything in-game completely absurd, on par with "earning awards" by watching pay-per-view TV or buying cereal in bulk. Thus, talk about "earning" abilities for our characters is a complete non-starter.

As on-demand entertainment, the game should be fun for all subscribers at all times. A variety of activites in-game is good to support a variety of play styles, but if some aspect of the game generates a lot of interest, then it should be made available to the widest range of subscribers ASAP. Making people do un-fun things in-game to get to the good part defeats the purpose of on-demand entertainment, and drives away potential customers.

I warned that this would happen. No doubt as consensus chooses the clear "best" option for each slot, we'll be seeing a lot more of this behavior. Ain't raiding grand?
  5. How often do they proc in something like Tornado or Freezing Rain? What about Carrion Creepers?

When PA is about to run out, then Spooky is cast to continue the control if needed. If any foe try to run, they are the first ones to get stopped with Blind or Deceive. Invisibility protects me from most "adds." Liberal use of Deceive and the Rad debuffs keep me from being the focus of much damage, and I have a heal for when I do take damage. Combine the damage buff from AM with the Resistance Debuff from EF, and you get damage that is probably pretty equivalent to the Resistance debuff from Freezing Rain. The ToHit Debuff is virtually the same as an AoE control power.

It is simply learning to adjust to different tools available and understanding those tools. Ill/Storm is a lot of fun and very powerful. Storm adds a lot of nice tools. But Rad is very effective as well in a less chaotic way. . . the debuffs add a lot of protection and the buff to Recharge, Recovery and damage add a lot. And the self-heal and -Regen fill roles that Storm lacks.
LM, I never disparaged Illu/Rad as being useless. What I was trying to say is that Rad gives up some crowd control for enhanced damage-dealing.

Yes, there's a slow, and a huge hold that's up once a month, and some builds can make use of random PBAOE holds, but the toggles are more of an offensive tool than crowd control. They certainly don't stop MOBs from spreading out, often out of the area of effect. Teammates also usually take down the anchors first.

As with defense, reliable crowd control depends on a multilayered approach. Builds that skip a few layers of pure control for enhanced damage represent a tradeoff.

I would much prefer it if no encounter ever trivialized any build whatsoever, but that might not be a realistic design criterion. Hopefully there will be a realistic alternative to BAFs soon.
  7. Any suggestions?

My initial thought was to get Diamagnetic for the -regen, since my power sets don't offer that debuff, but apparently it's heavily resisted. The resistance debuff also looks rather microscopic, and the fire DoT is counter to character concept.

Is it worth bothering with the Interface slot at all on characters that don't have a full attack chain?
  8. LM, I feel your pain, up to a point, since a number of my favorite characters are performing at less than their usual excellence in the trials. No doubt it will take a while to optimize tactics and builds.

That said, I've always been a little perplexed by the reputation of Illus/Rad. How in the heck do you even manage "normal" content with such a limited amount of crowd control?

My main is Illus/Storm, and I find the extra knockdown/knockup/stun/slow absolutely essential. Rad toggles, while very useful, aren't much as crowd control goes; and an unreliable hold at melee range is just nuts on squishy! Lack of a self-heal really hurts Storm, but I'll take that hit for the indestructible pseudo-pets alone.

Well, I've never seen anyone say in the local channel, "I'm rejecting [player] for this TF because he/she/it lacks the right sets."

On the other hand, I DO see people rejected for a team and then made fun of in team chat because the person did not have sufficient set boni listed on the character profile. It happens pretty regularly, though not exactly often...yet.

As a defensive measure to prevent such rejection, I now make sure to play only characters that display impressive set bonus lists. Perhaps the elitist idiots mistake me for one of their own, and find it easier to share their true reasons for choosing teammates.

In any case, obviously skill is preferable to gear in most cases. But when PUGging, how can one determine player skill quickly, easily, and reliably? When assembling a team of unknowns for a race, doesn't it make a certain amount of sense to pick a Ferrari driver over someone on a moped?

From the perspective of efficiency, the elitists do have a point. It's the self-importance and derision that I find objectionable...and completely counter to the inclusive spirit of Superheroics.
  10. "Let them eat cake" was beautifully said too, if not actually by a certain Austrian.

What made this game special was that, with careful character design, the game mechanics flattened out differences between characters played by casual and obsessive players. For the most part, everyone could team together and all be useful. Whether the devs intended this outcome or not, many fans of the game have stayed with it precisely because it exemplified the inclusive atmosphere of the supers genre.

IOs were widely viewed as a marketing move to draw in players from the other MMOs who felt lost without a gear grind. I submit that introducing them was a mistake. A gear-centric "End Game" that further separates the haves and have-nots may not kill the game, but it will subvert what was special and unique about it.

A pity, if not exactly Doom. Good luck with the caste system that arises...

From what I've heard from RL friends and family who play CoH and other MMO's, many (if not most) other MMO's are WORSE. Some are MUCH worse. CoH has a much higher average player age and a higher percentage of women than most other games.
This! In my experience, there is a direct correlation between the grindiness of the "End Game" and the toxic competitiveness of the players in the game.

Mark my words, we'll be seeing a lot more of this type of behavior once the BARF goes on line.

Well, not by knee-breaking goons, no; but in a way we are.

Next time someone starts an Apex TF, why don't you try to get a character with an empty Alpha slot on the team?

This is a mechanical, enforced version of the stratification that concerns me. Emboldened by what could be perceived as a dev nod to elitism, how many players will try to set up a caste system in other content?

I play at odd times, and very often there's only one of [something interesting] starting, if that. Thus far, I do what I must to make my characters absolutely desirable on a team, but as the requirements become more onerous, I definitely will reconsider whether the game is worth that much trouble.

  13. One reason that people may feel compelled to obtain the most effective <whatever> may be that they know what happens to characters without it: Sometimes they aren't invited to teams, or even get booted off instead.

Yeah, I've heard the rah-rah before, "Well, *I* always invite whoever's around and even take special pity on the smelly losers." Thanks, the condescension feels so good. That's why these days if my character can't solo on x8 AND offer support to a team, then it's not worth my time to improve. Bye-bye fun concept builds!

From a practical game-design standpoint, I don't understand how the devs plan to develop new content with the competence spread of level-50 character builds increasing tremendously. Without going into specifics, we all know that even with SOs, some builds were hugely more effective than others. IOs exaggerated this difference between the most and least effective, and now Incarnate powers will do so again.

Will non-IOed, non-Incarnates be able to find a team at all soon? How many threads will there be to the effect that, "LOL, somebody actually expected to get an invite to the WTF, and he didn't even have a rare in his Justice slot?"

Then there's the question of what happens when somebody spends 9000 hours upgrading one character, and that power set then gets nerfed, or simply isn't needed for the Omega Task Force that all the cool kids are doing...

Most of the time, the damage classes are just there to mop up opponents already defeated by crowd control and debuffs.

Yes, I picked up Tornado mainly for AV-busting. In the old days, I used it for crowd control, but massive knockback is heavily frowned on these days, so I've migrated to a more AOE-friendly build. Heck, even I get annoyed when Tornado separates potential targets for Psychic Tornado, or carries them out of the Freezing Rain patch.

I can't spare any slots because most of this build is dedicated to maximizing global recharge. If my math is right, I should have perma-PA with the uncommon Spiritual Boost, and I'm not about to compromise this capability for a bit more damage. My controller is built for crowd control; if I want damage, I grab my blaster, corruptor, or crab.
  16. Well, to be precise, I can spare only one slot for damage on Tornado; the other slot has a +RCHG/+END duo.

Sure, if I had more slots, I'd put more damage on Tornado, and the Build Up proc on the PA. Unfortunately, the build is super tight. Only after the gift of free Fitness is Tornado even possible.
  17. My Illusion/Storm can spare only one slot on Tornado to improve damage. What is the best IO for that damage slot?

He already has the Achilles' Heel: Chance to Debuff in Freezing Rain, and I understand that this debuff does not stack with itself.

    So that leaves,

    Soulbound Allegiance: +Damage

    OR

Soulbound Allegiance: Chance for Build Up.

    Thoughts?
  18. Well, you didn't say what precise theme you're shooting for, but techno-magic works well with the Victorian Era, so how about this idea:

    Ophelia & Olivia Rookwood

If you're more in the mood for the Golden Age, then here's another suggestion:

    Shadow Call & Shadow Forge
  19. Without a doubt, for me this would be the immersion-breaking silliness of ambushes that can home in unerringly on my invisible characters from WAAAAAAAY across a crowded urban landscape.

This kind of foe behavior might make sense in some cases while transporting highly radioactive or magical items, or just standing around at the scene of an attention-gathering event, but in all other situations...you gotta be kidding me!
