  1. Zwill, I'll always remember the time you sat down to chat with a group of us late into the evening at the last Player Summit. It gave me a new appreciation for your position. Wherever you land your feet, they will be lucky to have you.

    Peace

I did not realize you guys had put up such a nicely consolidated site... LOVE IT .... bookmarked.

In talking to one of my "non-gamer" friends, she made this comment, "Of all the MMO's I looked into a little while ago, CoH was the one I most seriously considered picking up." I'm kinda sad she didn't, but maybe if it can be saved...

Her 3 year old daughter is completely enamored with The Hulk.
"What do you wanna be for Halloween, Missy?"
    "The Hulk!!"
    "Do you mean She-Hulk?"
    "NO! THE Hulk"

How fun would it be for Mom (& Auntie) to play superheros with her daughter?
As I've said before, though my expectations are not high, I'm holding onto a sliver of hope.

  6. Hrmmm.... okay... this may be a bit terse, or blunt, or naive, but this is what I put together...

    Dear NCSoft Executives,

This letter is in response to your decision to shut down Paragon Studios, and "sunset" the City of Heroes game.

I am not going to regale you with my personal stories of friendships made, or how great the CoH community is.
Nor am I going to impress you with how many years I've maintained a steady subscription, or how many hours I've spent in the game.
Neither am I going to point out all the many groundbreaking mechanics and features that City of Heroes has introduced, and that many MMOs have since attempted to copy in one way or another.

Frankly, I don't think you give a rat's tail about any of that.

What I will tell you is that your actions in this case have reinforced a very negative perception of your company amongst many in the western gaming communities.

This is, of course, not the first game that you have shuttered over the years...
But it is the first one that, according to most reports, was "in the black". It is also the first one that was cut off mid-development without any forewarning.
These actions may have been made from a business standpoint, but they are shortsighted from a customer standpoint. They are not actions that engender trust in your product stability.

You have, as the old saying goes, "cut off your nose to spite your face".

I have no doubt that you are unconcerned about your nose, as new noses are fairly easy to come by. But customer's memories are not as short as you may think. For many, that "new nose" will just be a painful reminder of the one that was lost, and they will wonder how long it will take before you tire of the new, cut it off, and replace it yet again.

To be gracious, why not give or sell the "old nose" to someone who will appreciate and care for it? You lose nothing, but will gain respect and loyalty. In a time of global economic upheaval, loyal customers will be your strength.

Please find a way to allow the continuation of City of Heroes.
You would lose nothing for it.
    You would gain much.

    Thank you for your consideration,
Honestly, I'm in the camp of low expectations.
Doesn't mean I can't hold onto a sliver of hope... just keeping expectations real.

    Anecdote:

Once upon a time, Hubby and I got into some argument over something that I can't even remember now...
He was stomping around, thumping chairs, slamming doors...
I walked into the kitchen, rummaged through the cupboards and found the largest glass jar I had (one of those gallon pickle jars)...
I took the jar into the front room where we'd pulled up our carpet (in preparation for new flooring), and gleefully smashed it onto the concrete subfloor.
    It was quite satisfying.
"See!" I cried triumphantly, "I can make big noises too!"

Then I had to clean up.

  9. I've been on almost every night.

I have a goal to get my other two mains some shiny IO builds.

So, I'm mostly playing the market or trying to stock up on AE tix, but I'm also up for anything that earns Reward Merits.

  10. Awsome!

I was thinking about that the other day, but didn't really know how to approach it.
I mean, obviously I wasn't going to run into her at Red Robin.

    .
  11. The only thing I see is that they keep saying their focus is on mobile games.
Which is why I understand the many questions regarding changing NC, because they do not have any mobile games.
HOWEVER, the answers to those questions seem to indicate that they do not intend to try and change NC except in terms of f2p....
Least, that's what I garnered, corporate speak is a bit of a foreign language to me.

I also agree with Briggs. They do not understand the importance of advertising over here.
I understand trimming advertising budgets, or getting creative with advertising, but you can't just cut it out completely and expect your products to sell.
    .
  12. Excellent advice overall.

Don't feed the Mogwai (after midnight), or splash water on them.

    .
  13. Take a look at Arcanna's explanation of licensing here
It might be the case that NCSoft may own the characters and images, but we still have some usage rights to them as well.

btw, I was very impressed with your article, to the point that I did something I hate doing... I "signed up" so that I could recommend it.

I'll get to work on an update to the utility.
It also applies to apostrophes. My global has an apostrophe, as do a few of my characters. But since I have an apostrophe in my global, I cannot save any of my toons.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for the update.

    Thanks for putting this together.

There's nothing wrong with being outgoing, Impish. Makes life interesting. Plus, you probably seriously made that guy's day. Of course, since he was a gamer geek, you very well may get a tell online saying Hi! Hope he sends it to Rangle's global; that would be fun.
/em waits for a thread to pop up from some guy about the weird girl who mistakenly gave him her global, not her phone number.
See, now THIS ^^ is what I was thinkin'... lol

Jack, those lyrics are quite clever... glad I could provide some inspiration.

On a related note! Link for your friend. The folks from the show Face Off were there with a steampunk creation > http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotc...ayce-bird.html
Oh, I doubt it was them... unless they are really familiar with the Vegas suburbs, we were pretty far from the strip. I'm pretty sure they were locals. Thanks for the link.

And TT, I have struck up random conversations with folks before, but here's the thing... I was sitting there with my girlfriends who are not gamers in the least bit. They're not prudes by any means, but it was "our time" together, if that makes any sense.

The scary thought to me is, the steampunk costuming community is rather tight. I've been to a couple of their events, and counted maybe 50 actual costumers (maybe even less). I just can't help but wondering if I'm gonna spot them at one of those events in the future.

  19. You see, I was sitting in Red Robin with my girlfriends and their children on our weekly lunch outing when three guys waltzed in and took the table just to the side of us.

I paid no mind, chatting with the girls, playing with the babies, and coaxing the 3 year old that calls me "Auntie" to eat her mac and cheese. I paid no mind, that is until a few key words jumped into my ears. Here's the partial conversation from my perspective:

"Did you hear about the accident in the news? about the ambulance that hit someone in an intersection?"
"Wow, some people just don't pay attention. How did they miss the sirens?"
    ".... best game ever..."
"... technically ambulances aren't legally supposed to run red lights, same as fire trucks. It's a 'courtesy' that drivers are encouraged to allow them the leeway"
"... just give it to the fans..."
"That's not what everyone is taught in driver's ed..."
"Missy, take a bite of your mac..."
    "It's hot!"
    "Is the li'l man hungry?"
"He ate already, but I'll give him some more..."
"... being in the industry ..."
"He finally tried some avocado and I think he was surprised by the texture, but then demanded more"
"Oh yeah, Missy loved avocado... still does"
    "... Felicia Day... 'nuff said..."

    (OMG my ears were burnin')

    "I like avocado!"
"Do you like mac & cheese too?... take a bite!"
"Yes, you need to eat if you want to stay bigger than your brother"
"I have a feeling he's gonna outweigh her in a month!"
    *snickers all around*
"... met some people... steampunk costumes... didn't realize.. a group here in town"

(ACK! must find a way to talk to these guys!!)

I sat there with my girlfriends, looking oh so white bread suburban housewife in my jeans and light blue and white striped tee shirt: cooing at the babies, coaxing the three year old to eat, and furiously trying to think of a way to communicate to the guys at the next table.

Obviously I couldn't just up and say "Oh hai, sorry for evesdropping, but I'm a gamer here in town, and I have a friend who is a costumer that specializes in steampunk and renaissance. Maybe we know some folks in common. Oh, and I assume you've heard the news about CoH? There are some petitions going around, it'd be great if you would toss your voice in by signing them."

No, no that would be waaaaay too awkward, right?

So instead, I whipped out my small notepad that I keep for such situations, and quickly scribbled down this brilliant message:
    Vegas CoH Players
    Impish Kat (forums)
    @Bo'Tanika
    and
    @Rangle M. Down

    Then I waited.

I watched surreptitiously as they received their bill. Two of them got up and wandered in the direction of the bathrooms, one headed out to the lobby. I kept glancing at the restroom hallway, and soon saw the reflection of one of the guys in the pictures hanging on the walls.

Quickly, I got up and went in the direction of the bathrooms... As I approached the man, a largish man in a tropical themed black button down shirt (not overdone, it was nice), with nice... ermm.. pale hair... I smiled brightly. Those of you who have seen my smile, you know what I mean... brightly, with a little glint... my "oh hai" smile. He smiled back, but ducked quickly to pass by. I grabbed his arm (dear lordy... that just sounds terrible, but that's what I did) to stop him mid stride, and handed him my little slip of paper.
"Oh, thank you!" he said in a rather surprised voice. And I kept going, glancing over my shoulder to see him reading it.

It didn't really hit me until later, when my dear hubby teased me about hitting on random gamer geeks, that he might have expected something else on that paper...

Oh dear... I am sorry dude, it wasn't my phone number.

Agree with others... do a little googling on "tenants rights" for your city/state.
Most laws state that tenants are supposed to be given 30 days written notice.
Make sure you check into the specifics of tenant's rights in case of the sale of a property. Even most sale documents have a 30 day window built into the wording to accommodate these kind of instances.

Best of luck, hope to see you before the lights go out in Paragon.
