Here's hoping you feel better.
I don't know you...I mean I have seen your name here and there on the forums but I tend not to remember people as a habit. Your post is quite hypocritical; which I am sure you knew and basically stated. Not sure what gives you the "right" to tell people to shut up. The constant spewing of negativity is going both ways in case you failed to notice.
Me?? I personally cannot stand all the Anti-NCSoft BS that is being spread. I get it you don't like NCSoft... They "murdered" your community..they destroyed your "home." To that I say GET OVER IT. See there I can be just as douchey about your (not meaning you specifically.. but like you said ..they should know who they are) constant whining and tantrum fits over a business decision that NO ONE knows the full details about which is common place among big business decisions. I am tired of the self absorbed ungrateful attitude displayed on the forums like people are owed ANYTHING from NCSOft... they owe you NOTHING. You are not some victim...but damn if you can't play the role. It is a game people. If your "community" is so spectacular and all that jazz...then it should very well be able to maintain itself...heck even flourish under a new Plan Z.
You wanna know what your community looks like right now?
Spoiled brats who are gonna get back at Mom & Dad for taking away your toy. Vindictive..unorganized..childish...wannabe thugs.
I was ALL for the SaveCoH movement when it started - and here's why. It wasn't about getting even..it was about saving the game. It wasn't about doing immoral/illegal activities..it was about uniting as one voice. It wasn't about a smear campaign..it was about heroes standing tall, united, and honorably defending what they believed in.
Even when a hero is defeated...that doesn't mean they become a villain...it means they pick themselves up...dust off their clothes and get ready to fight again...like a hero...not some two bit thugs. THAT is what has been lost from the CoH movement and THAT is why I "left" it... I am a hero and I refuse to act like some ****** nozzle because things didn't go my way. I cannot in good conscience stand by with smear campaigns, nasty emails/letters being sent to NCSoft, emulators...because to me that is not what a hero does...their morality doesn't waiver when the fight gets rough..if anything their resound gets stronger..their convictions strengthen.
Instead of wasting your energy on NCSoft; who honestly could give a rat's a$$ what the SaveCoH movement is doing... take that energy and focus into something you believe in; like Plan Z. You are wasting time and energy on these minuscule smear tactics when you could be going 100% towards achieving something which is more admirable and reflects better on the community. The recent attitude change of SaveCoH seems like a waste and counter productive to saving anything; but I will be damned if it isn't destroying your image among some players.
(YES I replied to EK in this post, but when i say YOU... I am speaking in general terms of YOU not EK... You being those people who are doing the things I pointed out).
Quote:Seriously, you don't like it. That's been made clear. Big ******* deal.
Get over it. Some people will proceed with some things that you may not like. Yippedee friggin' doo. Get over them. Get over yourself. And stop going on and on, in every frigging post here about it. Your opinion about me, my wants, my willingness to play an emulated game of a game that has been shut down, of Tony, of Mercedes Lackey, of Titan Networks, of anyone else and anything to do with this stuff is of entirely zero consequence. Go ahead and state it once if you really want to... but, please... then be done (it's been stated hundreds of times already...blah blah blah).
Seriously. The same people keep on dragging down every single discussion into an argument, repeating the same exact opinions. You don't like it.
You want to stop it? Go ahead. Give that a try. Stop TALKING about it. No one really cares whether you approve or don't approve other than yourself.
Yeah, I know... I have no place to tell anyone to stop talking. I don't give a ****. I'm saying it. I'm generally a nice friggin' guy around here, but I'm saying it... many of you are being perpetually annoying by constantly telling everyone else how much you dislike what other people are doing.
Seriously, boo-friggin-hoo.
Make a citizen's arrest if you think it is illegal, lol.
Write a friggin' book about how lowly or laughable you think anything anyone else is doing and put it on the market and see how many people buy it and have a nice day... but, please, stop friggin' coming into every single thread where people mention their own interests involved in getting NCSoft to talk or getting an emulator up and running or trying to get NCSoft to sell or starting their own game... You (and there are way more than just one of you. If you know who you are... shame on you... if you don't know who you are... THINK!) go and do what you like and follow your own paths, but your constant spewing of negativity over what other people wish for and/or are acting upon is, quite honestly, pathetic (which is sad for you, truly) and annoying (which is sad for me).
Yep, hypocrisy... "So, you can do what you want to, but I can't do what I want to..." Which is... spout negativity about what other people are doing, over and over and over and on and on and on.
Get the **** over it. Focus on your own friggin' life and stop making yourself a clown by filling the final months of these forums with your own amazing (sarcastic... it's far from amazing) online personalities that mock, berate and dismiss every notion that hopeful, happy CoHers that intend to co0ntinue their CoHing in some form beyond when NCSoft closes their servers down.
True value of this reply? Likely zero... but maybe it'll make me feel better. -
Reminds me of the scene from HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL
http://youtu.be/1GYBMDYWJzE -
Meh - Still not enough to get me to play DCUO. That was always my wish here - base love and/or personal lairs. About 3-4 years ago I decided to do my own base for just my toons. Sadly about 3 months ago I decided to redo my base and deleted everything...it still sits unfinished LOL! I always got too busy designing/editing other people's bases to finish my own.
-
And if he is trying to get CoH players there that is bad how? Other players are actively recruiting on these forums for various games - do you go there and tell them the same thing? Seeing as how we were told by a redname that we could now discuss other games; yes even other GASP NCSoft games; your attempt at policing is laughable.
His advice is a lot more logical and mature than most people's. I sometimes wish NCSoft had actually done something BAD to the players like a 30 day sunset; then maybe the one's going all Anti-NCSoft wouldn't seem like children throwing a tantrum half the time.
RE: Halloween event. I actually prefer the "old school" Halloween stuff compared to the new Halloween event/mission that was introduced. I think maybe I would have liked it more had I not had to be exemplared to 29. I remember my first year ToTing...trying to get as many of the costumes as I could. I didn't do nearly as much ToTing last year because I was focusing on getting all the badges for it on a few toons
-
I actually meant to hit REPLY and not QUOTE my bad.
My questions still stand thoughEven if NCSoft could not WIN a legal battle...just how much of a battle does Titan really think they can fight in the courts? Financially? And would it even be worth the risk if such a battle means the destruction of Plan Z?
I mean this is NCSoft we are talking about...you know the ones people like to vilify on these boards since 8/31/2012. NCSoft being the heartless/ruthless/evil corporation that it is...would decimate Plan Z's future if it came to a legal battle over emulation. One would think that Titan should COMPLETELY disassociate itself with those doing emulation work...and by that I mean not turn a blind eye. I would hope that Titan would do whatever it took to safely secure the "community" and not take unnecessary risks that could truly decimate what is left of the "community." NCSoft has ignored Titan for the most part, and I would think it would be interesting to see what happens when the hot headed nature of the current movement...pisses them off; especially considering I am quite positive they read the forums here and there and are aware of each "project."
Just my 2ยข.
-
The question is not if NCSoft would win, but rather how much of a legal battle could Titan afford? I am willing to bet NCSoft has 1. More lawyers and 2. More funds available for legal fees than Titan could ever imagine.
Is the RISK of a lawsuit enough deterrent for Titan to abandon ALL affiliation with emulation if it means the future of Plan Z?? Too bad these boards will be gone in a few weeks; because I think that would be one helluva "I told you so."
Quote:The enforceability of clickwrap agreements is not at issue. Contracts cannot override Copyright law under any circumstances whatsoever in the US. The precedent in question would not be applicable to a copyright case in the US, as Korean law is different than US law and does not have jurisdiction over my authorship rights within the US.
Let me put it this way. US Copyright law forbids me from transferring my copyright rights through an EULA even if I want it to. I'm not even allowed to voluntarily do so. The law was designed to make it impossible for me to do this, even if I have a gun to my head, because the law concluded many authors in the past had that figurative gun to their heads by virtue of their extremely untenable negotiating position.
In other words, the law doesn't just say NCSoft can't take my rights this way, it says the stronger thing that I can't even given them away this away even if I want to, and the law doesn't recognize any such attempt by me to do so. I can only transfer rights through the method proscribed by Copyright law, and no contract (except for the work-for-hire exception noted in the law) can alter that requirement under federal law.
Also, the article itself suggests that Korean law has similar protections afforded to creators:
(emphasis mine)
I'm not as knowledgeable about Korean law, so I cannot confirm those, but I mention them specifically to suggest that the earlier passage mentioned ("...A recent judgment by the Seoul District Court...") in context appears to refer to the question of the tangibility of game constructs, and not the intellectual property related to them. -
Oh I am not doing an emulator LOL! I am morally against them as they are nothing but stealing. Professionally I could not be involved with one if I even wanted to - I am a Federal employee, and well I value my job way more than a game.
The emulator is the main reason I no longer participate in anything Titan related. NO Titan is not endorsing an emulator, but a few key people at Titan are knowingly working on it. I refuse to be associated with such a thing or any group that takes part in it.
Quote:What made COX a good game is also the Devs listened to ideas from the players, even ones they probably thought was off-the wall or impossible at the time. WIth that mindset running a game, that takes out the big factor of what made COX good. Now, it's "If you are not part of the SaveCOH" and agree with everything I say, you are a troll." Or Unicorn as some circles call it now. Too closed minded for that type of person or people to run a game that is nearly as good as COX.
Plus I find it not wise to talk about illegal activities on the company's forum that a person is planning on stealing from. That is like sitting on a porch of a person's home and talking about how you are going to steal their tv because they are not using it. Now if an illegal emulator or what ever they call it now do pop up, NCSoft have a good starting point of their investigation if they do not outright find it anyways and have the information of possible participants and when they get caught many now cant even say "I didnt know it was illegal" when they have the postings about how it was planned out and where these plans are located. So it makes it's easy to prove the intent. To steal. -
Oh yeah I forgot if you are not totally up the SaveCoH backside then you are a troll. Speaking of illegal - how's that emulator coming along?
-
And I think NCSoft was quite gracious in giving a 90 day sunset. Most MMOs get 30-60 days. The only thing I think NCSoft was churlish in doing was the way they handled the Paragon staff.
-
That article made me laugh. Sure SOME of what it said is actually true, but some of it is also pure hearsay.
This whole Anti-NCSoft thing is kinda silly to me. I doubt NCSoft truly cares what a few thousand people think...when GW2 has already sold over 2 million units as of mid September. Articles like these discredit the author more than the subject in my opinion. Felt like I was reading a National Enquirer Gaming article. -
Your story very much reminds me of my own
Glad to see you had a great 6 years playing!
And I too traversed Grendel's Gulch with hover on more than one occasion.. What?? IT WAS SCARY!!!!! -
You assume VERY wrong. Not only did I sign the petition but I CONSTANTLY tweeted about it every day. I was very much for SAVECOH until approx a week ago when it became clear that no amount of letters or tweets were going to Save CoH. NCSoft made their decision and instead of continuing in an effort that will be fruitless I stopped.
Heck I even got a few co-workers to sign it who have never played CoH.
These boards irk me when people assume so much about people they have no idea about
I have no problem with NCSoft as they were the ones who allowed me to play CoH for 7+ years. I was not delusional and knew CoH would close eventually.
From my standpoint the population was noticeably declining within the past 2 years - many of my global friends went on to other games and these were people who had played 5-6 years.
You and I both can think of ways for CoH to make money, but then again we also do not head a billion+ corporation and know everything that went into the decision...so yeah it's easy for us to say NCSoft was wrong.
Quote:I'll assume you also didn't sign the petition to save the game, but I think the vast majority of the people that signed that petition will steer people clear of NCSoft. If you fall in the tiny minority be happy for yourself, your an individual.
I meant to say even 100,000 signatures (if we had got 80,000 more) wouldn't change anyone's mind.
I'm pretty sure CoH had more players than Everquest and a lot of MMO's. So there is no magic minimum number of players that CoH had too few players to keep the game going.
I do think MMO's eventually die, but CoH didn't look like a game dying. The population seems to be steady at what it has been for the last two years or so. New content has been coming out faster than ever. For a dying game you'd expect new content to be coming out slower than ever.
CoH hit a critical mass and was big enough to support itself for the immediate future. It would've been my hope that if CoH died it was CoH2 that killed it.
North America also has a very viable market for a game like CoH, no marketing has coincided with the releases of blockbuster Super Hero movies.
But with no real option for Super Hero MMO, the population has no substitute-like place to go. Most people do not consider Champions Online or DCUniverse to be rough equivalents to CoH. And because of genre we aren't just going to go to WoW and be happy there.
Project X was not CoH's fault, unless project X is CoH2. (Rumors are to the contrary)
If the problem really was excessive staff, you'd expect a dying game would substantially cut staff and reassess the viability after reductions in staff.
Either way, personally I see lots of things that could've been done to allow NCSoft to make money on CoH, that were not done. CoH though groundbreaking in so many ways didn't get the same treatment that Everquest received. And to the average gamer, there was no way to see how or why CoH isn't as viable now as it was two years ago. -
Generally when I quote someone it is more so they know I am speaking to them personally or replying to something they said in general. I have been a Top Posting person since I started posting on forums back in 1995/1996 and I can honestly say this is the first time anyone has every said anything negative regarding it
Quote:Putting the quote below the reply is like putting effect before cause (assuming the posting language is naturally read top to bottom). And the more the reply relies on the context given it by the quote the more illogical it appears. Of course, if the reply doesn't heavily rely on context then quoting may have been unnecessary in the first place. -
Another thread got me thinking this... where are the devs who left CoH BEFORE the announcement?
BABs?
Castle?
Geko
Pohsyb
JLove (Who truly is sexy)
Statesman - I know he is currently CEO of Cryptic.
Etc etc
Anyone know where the most recent Devs have moved on to since 8/31 if they have found new jobs? -
We will never truly know how much profit or revenue CoH had, but we do know that it was not enough for NCSoft to continue to support CoH. The best guess is that CoH had approx 50-60k current subscribers, and that number was slowly decreasing. Compare that to when CoH had 140k+ subscribers and it amazes me that CoH stayed as long as it did (Granted I am happy it stayed 8 years, just surprised).
CoH was not some cash cow bringing in millions upon millions...it was treading water. Part of the problem; again people don't like to hear this, is that the Freedom model was too lenient on Premium members...it gave them too much. Once someone reached tier 8/9 there was very little reason to continue to pay a monthly sub; especially if incarnate content was not something they were interested in. Incarnate content is the ONLY reason I stayed subbed as long as I did. I had grown bored with most of the game and when they finally introduced an end game it reignited my interest in CoH to a whole new degree.
I personally did not think CoH would shut down when it did, BUT I knew it's days were numbered. I expected CoH to close down in either late 2013 or early 2014; which should have given Project X time to see fruition. But I look at it a lot differently than most people on these forums; it was a great 8+ years and now that is over. I Doubt I will move on to anything else; haven't found anything that remotely interests me. So while I think CoH was unique and special...that is all I think was unique and special. CoH was my first MMO and it will always carry a place in my heart, but it's time to let it go and that's what I am doing...it was a great game which I will miss playing.
I will add that I think Paragon had one of; if not the best, development and CS team out there. When the announcement came I felt bad for them; working so long and hard on a product to simply be told "get out." NCSoft could have handled THAT part of the closing in a MUCH better fashion imo.

Or it is me saying my comments here are like they are in real life: blunt and realistic. I deal with murderers and rapists all day long - sugar coating things isn't the best way to deal with them
Sugar coating is for children - adults need to learn to communicate in a realistic and no BS manner
One of my biggest pet peeves are people who can't say what they think for fear of hurting people's feelings...little white lies are the playground of spin doctors...not realists
And now you made me think of this guy:
And I don't like it when people Bottom Post, but I'm not going to compare their action to farting...because I recognize that people do things that make them comfortable and what they are used to doing and since it doesn't affect me...I just leave it be. To be honest I have never cared whether people Bottom or Top post and would never try to tell people the way they post is against some supposed rule. If I want to "attack" someone I sure as hell am not going to be a netiquette freak and look for something like that, grammar, punctuation, etc....
Quote:I'm not saying the other forums haven't done the good stuff. That doesn't make them not a hostile place overall. The good doesn't automatically nullify the bad. I just know I see a LOT more venom and hate toward other posters on other forums than here.
Learn to read. I said it's not the posting style. It's the overall attitude your response to a complaint about it demonstrates.
Which is, honestly, just a spin-doctor way of saying "rude". -
-
I actually looked on the interwebs about this LOL! I have been posting in forums for about 16 years now and have always done what is called "Top Posting" where your post is on top of the quote. There is no ONE way that is considered acceptable online is what I have discovered. Some people prefer Top Posting (me) while others prefer Bottom Posting (Tyger) BUT there is nothing saying either is considered universally correct; nor is either way considered universally offensive.
Here is one of the "reasons" Top posting is more common now than it was say when Usenet etc were the main "forums":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_posting
Quote:So while some may think it's rude; others do not...but I am pretty sure most people consider farting at a tea party rude. I was bored at work and looked for the netiquette surrounding this and basically found that it is about personal preference. Netiquette regarding forums is the usual; don't spam, don't swear, read the forum FAQ etc: http://forum-services-review.toptenr...ette-tips.htmlTop-posting is a natural consequence of the behavior of the "reply" function in many current e-mail readers, such as Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, and others. By default, these programs insert into the reply message a copy of the original message (without headers and often without any extra indentation or quotation markers), and position the editing cursor above it. Moreover, a bug present on most flavours of Microsoft Outlook caused the quotation markers to be lost when replying in plain text to a message that was originally sent in HTML/RTF. For these and possibly other reasons, many users seem to accept top-posting as the "standard" reply style.
So I will continue to Top Post until 11/30 because that is how I have done it for 16 years now and it is my preference. If that bothers anyone SO much that they choose to ignore my posts, ignore me, etc... uhmm that's their issue not mine
-
Just got an email from Extra Life:
Overall $1,930,000 was raised this year for Children's Miracle Network hospitals which is well above the 1.2 million raised in 2011
The City of Heroes team raised $8,618.00.
Gaming with my friend who was playing for his local CMN hospital was a great way for us to end our time playing CoH together. -
My observation of the forums from 2005 through 2011 is what kept me from posting.... It doesn't bother me if people are "rude" to me on a forum, but to say that new posters are always met with open arms here is a flat out lie...I have seen "noobs" torn to shreds for asking so-called "dumb" questions...not just here, but on every MMO forum I have participated in.
Again...nothing special about the CoH community - it's just another MMO community with decent and not so decent posters and everything in between.
Quote:You could have something there. I've always tried to be courteous and respectful on these forums, and other posters have been overwhelmingly courteous and respectful to me in return. Honestly, I can't remember anyone being outright rude to me, even when I was a newbie with dumb questions. I guess these forums are like anything else, what you get out of them is equal to (or at least strongly influenced by) what you put into them. -
No clue what that is referencing. I am not going to link to the thread though. It was in the pvp section and it was nudes posted of a MALE player. They were then spread all over this forum as well as another CoH forum ridiculing him etc.
-
If my bottom quoting bothers you that much...LOL
I have ALWAYS bottom quoted - it's not something against you or anyone it is simply how I reply on forums. Comparing it to a real life disgusting habit is uhmm weird. If my reply format bothers you as much as someone farting... LOL
I'll say it again: CoH forums are not unique or special...kinda like the CoH community. You thinking they are does not make them so. I have read stories on other forums how X game has helped autistic children cope with their autism, how games have helped people come out of a deep depression, how couples have met/married/had kids, etc etc... These are not unique to CoH. At the core of most MMOs is a supportive player base and to think it is only a CoH thing is nothing short of conceited.
If you consider my posting style to be rude and use that as justification to act rudely that is your choice. I consider my posts to be realistic and blunt. If you want to be rude go ahead it won't affect my opinion of you or this community...that opinion has been the same for quite some time. I didn't play this game because of it's community...I played it because I liked the game. I don't let other people's rudeness/politeness dictate my experience.
Quote:Cutting a profitable project when you're keeping failing projects alive is a smart business decision? Remind me never to invest in any companies you may start.
This isn't a new perception of mine since the announcement that the game was closing. It's one I've held since day 1. Odd how I'm the one not being objective because my opinions don't line up with yours. My own experience aside, I've heard similar complaints of hostile communities from those games. Few to none regarding this community with the possible exception of those who come here spouting severe negativity and aren't welcomed with open arms. But that happens in any gaming community.
Stop it. You're not being "unique" or "cute" or "clever". Just obnoxious. It breaks the flow of the conversation. This is like when someone complains about you farting at a tea party just responding "I always fart at social events". It's a small thing, but it's basic netiquette. Your dismissive indifference only shows a complete lack of respect that tells me I'm wasting my time trying to be reasonable with you. It might also be an example of an attitude that would explain why you might be treated less warmly than most people here. You act rude, expect to be treated rudely in return. -
Uhh no I won't be telling people to avoid NCSoft. MMOs close it is the nature of the beast. CoH had 8+ years which is a good run.
There were not 100,000 signatures to Save CoH - try... 21,088 as of today - NOT an impressive amount imo for such a "healthy" game.
CoH would have been more viable had Project X never happened. As it stands it was barely profitable due to the excessive staff.
My confidence in MMOs has not been eroded in the slightest. MMOs require players...they require profit that meets the demands of the publisher. If they can't do that then they will be closed. NCSoft gave a 90 day sunset which is more than a lot of MMOs that have closed can say.
Quote:One thing I will say is that the PR hit NCSoft has taken goes far beyond just the people that signed the petition or were playing the game at notice.
Many people will not actively go and get friends to sign petitions to save a video game, especially with such a small likelihood that 100,000 signatures would change NCSoft's position.
However, the number of gamers that know that NCSoft killed a viable game; especially in the strange illogical and non-transparency way that CoH has been killed, has left a stain on the entire gaming community.
All MMO's have been hurt because it slightly has eroded confidence in future IP might be sold to a company like NCSoft and they might close the game down without any significant forewarning.
NCSoft in particular has singled itself out as a company with a reputation among gamers that does not stand behind its titles. Especially a title that seemed like it was self sustaining and healthy like CoH.
There will always be doubts about any MMO that NCSoft puts out. And the CoH player base will be vocal in reminding future players to avoid NCSoft products.
I WILL HELP FUTURE GAMERS PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM NCSOFT PRODUCTS. -
Obviously the profit was not reasonable for NCSoft; which is their business decision
CoH was not bringing in what NC wanted and they shut it down - that does not make them evil it makes it a business decision - a smart one imo.
I did not find those communities any more vile than this community; maybe that's because I looked at it objectively and not with rose colored sunglasses on as a CoH fan. Then again when someone/something is dying we tend to only remember the good things and tend to make it seem like it/they were more special than they truly were.
I always quote bottom....
Quote:What do you base this off of?
I didn't say anything about "since Freedom"... So, where are my numbers off?
For a f2p game that has income from other micro-transactions, it's not bad at all. Subscriber games hang on with significantly less than 50k subscribers. The fact is the game was still pulling a reasonable profit... That alone is a success.
Then your bias is showing. Most of those communities can be downright vile. Not Blizzard forums vile, but still pretty bad.
By the way, beginner forum etiquette 101: Quote top, reply bottom if not splicing within the quote. -
Pretty sure everyone agrees WoW is not your typical MMO in any manner; both in the sheer number of subs and in their culture. So comparing CoH to WoW forums is a bit ridiculous to say the least. My game forum experience is from EQII, CO, DCUO, SWTOR, GWII etc....
Those forums are basically just like these - some unicorns, some helpful people, and everything in between.
And before you try to paint CoH forums as pleasant...remember the forums encompass ALL sections. Ever been to our pvp forums? There was one thread where someone posted nude pics of a player and people berated that player left and right - you are right such a pleasant communityEVERY community has it's unicorns...CoH is no different.
Quote:I'll assume, then, that you were never a part of the Aion or WoW forums. You think people get away with stuff here? Go take a look at the sh*t Aion players post. There's an entire thread dedicated to making fun of Brazilians and it's not a joke thread either. Hell, try asking for anything on the WoW forums and getting something other than "l2p nub".
