Thats a great Idea. Maybe when an Arc is rated, there is a feedback option, which auto e-mails you. Or create a feedback tab in MA to let you see players feedback of your arcs.

If the enemy cant attack, then noone takes any damage. If you are wanting damage, you must be joking id you think a defender is a replacement for a blaster.

Then again I'm a bit spoiled. My wife runs a kat/SR scrapper, and I run a Sonic/MM blaster, so we debuff both def&res quite a bit more than a defender really ever contributes.

The team that usually rus with us:
    1:Kat/SR Scrap
    2:Sonic/MM Blaster
3:Ele/Dev Blaster, or a Stone/FF troller (this player switched between the two alot)
    4:Fire/Rad Troller
    5:EM/WP tanker

+3 others. We do everything from GM's to AV's w/o a problem. Its not my "prefurred" team, but its a great team.

I also don't understand why is it lately when the devs announce some new and interesting features - like new power sets or game content, they have to sour it by removing a game mechanic they admit to not really being a problem right off the bat! Posi states that the concern for bridging requests really wasn't as big as a problem as they thought! It was a misperception by the dev team! But hey, since our data-mining shows that requests for bridging isn't a problem like we "thought", then lets go ahead and change it quick now! Come on...the only reason why it doesn't show up in your data-mining is because you probably only looked at the last 4 to 6 months. Hello, that is how long AE has been out and there hasn't been a need for bridges - you already fixed that! LOL However you "over-corrected". If you really want us to use the non-AE game content again, maybe (and I cringe to suggest this) simply turn off auto-SKing in AEs or apply this new system only to AEs and people will eventually not abuse it (I mean enjoy it) so much. They will go back to the more "balanced" system that already exists! Now, you may reply with "well we don't want to see the spam of bridging again" ...well again, sounds like you "added" a new mechanic that is going to be awesome which is the email/broadcast filter. Based on actual game play (not short-term "extensive data-mining"), it's the broadcasting and emails that annoy people the most. If other players don't see how some other players choose to play the game, then obviously they can't complain about it. Hence, 1) add broadcast/email filters, 2) leave SKing alone or add your new way as an "option", 3) Fix AE so it doesn't auto SK and allow it to be the alternate mission creator it was intended to be.

Ultimately, the dev team really needs to consider how far it "over-corrects" a problem they recently created and not practically re-write the entire game in one issue. It was bad enough you couldn't adjust certain ATs for PvP, now you are taking that same philosophy to PvE. PLEASE seriously consider this new CoX 2.0 before you force it on us!
Oddly there have only been a very few people with problems with this new system of sking. Can you tell me what is great about not having the team all teamable? What about the current system of teaming is better than being able to play with absolutly anyone without playing mentor/SK tetris? What about doorsitting is fun for the general pop? At least with this new system, PLing will only happen "fast" if everyone contributes. At least with this new system i can play with my SG, with my current project character. What is so bad about more freedom to play for fun, at a cost of playing for powergaming?

I am a Min/Maxing Gamer. I am a rules lawyer. I am NOT a munchkin, and therefore I play the game for fun. Your fun might be to "beat" the game. Your fun might be to raise a ruckus. Your fun might be be to lower morale. Your fun evidently is not within the means of a game that the largest population plays togeather.

To quote many people before me "Lvl 50 is the goal, 1-49 is the journey. Enjoy the journey."

Nothing about this system affects the journey, except making it a bit longer by also making every party member matter (Instead of telling the sk that is at -5 to sitout).

Next point. PVP in this game has always been troublesome. BUT before Stalkers were the I WIN button. Now every AT has at least 1 semi-viable PVP build. I would count that as progress.

Last point. Just because you don't like the term, doesn't mean they don't datamine. If most people don't bridge, and bridging is a problem, then oddly enough taking it away affects total population-most people. If Bridging is a problem, and most people do bridge, then the game is fixed to be more in line with how it is supposed to be.

I have another "fix" for bridging. Its called do what every ther MMO does and don't allow people to party outside of a 5 level range. That would kill all parties in this game.

Another "fix" would be to set 30 min timers to every mish, so mishes arnt really farmable. That ruins the content players.

Another "fix" is to make it where party members dont get xp for the kills if they are further away from the mob being killed than 20 ft. That ruins the people that can solo in teams to speed things up (Scrappers, Stalkers, Brutes, MM's, Etc)

Or the "fix" i like best is to encourage everyone to play togeather by taking out the need for mentors.

The quotes tend to mean someones exact words, not nessessairly my own view. Even look at the title of the article about I16.... it is called something along the lines of "Doing the impossible" because our current dev staff see that they even are guilty of saying it was "impossible" and so are playing off their old beliefs.

Reading comprehension is a bit abysmal nation wide.

Even so the only "fix" I really want is travel powers. I want my "inertia" based toon with SS from lvl 1. If I wait till lvl 14 for it, I want to still keep it if exempd (Superman doesn't ever lose his speed just for hanging out with batman, he just tells batman to hop in the bat mobile).

Other than that, it would be convienant to keep self rez's. but thats just cause it helps teaming.

The Idea I had in mind as the "fix" was you get the powers, but none of the enhancments. So you "can" use them, but they are expensive, weak hitting, etc. Then you lose nothing thematically with your toon, while still staying fairly balanced for the level.

Or They could let everything through, so your lvl 50 exemp'd to 1 does damage as a lvl 1, but you feel "epic"

I feel that the Devs buffing the XP curve is a backdoor nancy ploy to avoid adding any new content? This is the same way when we had a bugged mission we could call it in and a GM would tell us if it is and release the mob...instead now we can auto-complete this mission? I feel like the Devs are trying to avoid doing stuff by padding?

I mean how much harder would it be to add another room inside Fort Darwin with another contact? or how much harder will it be to add a new contact that has two new arcs for levels 1-10 and add some for 11-20? Instead of making it faster to level out of 1-20 give us more ways to level in 1-20...and by more ways I don't mean AE! The Devs did the same thing with radio missions and paper missions, instead of adding new contacts they gave us generic missions.

I still feel that AE was the lame way to avoid adding new content and create new systems that pad the games faults.

I am not doomcasting, I am just making an observation.

I can make complete sense of the leveling curve buff in the 1-20 range and the SSK to mirror AE, the Devs are trying to correct a major F-Up...
    Short story long:

Just so you know, the program itself is built on something called the "Cryptic Engine." It is the core of how the game works. BUT as any programmer knows, just because your code is based on the backbone of someone else's doesn't nessessairly give the code compatability. Nor do they own your modifications nessessairly. CO and CoX are wtitten based off the same engine, but all the code added is unique to the company. And PNC bought the rights to all of the game, but cannot take the Cryptic name off, since they are also the owners of the CoX base engine.

It would take a massive rewrite of CoX to have all the functionality the CO has. At the same time Cryptic cannot legally use anything they made while specifically working on CoX, since that would bring up conflict of interest legal issues (you cannot work for a company and use your work for said company to make a competing product. Its fairly standard contract clause). So they have had to rewrite everything they liked about CoX for CO. This also means that if CoX is going to "steal" a feature of CO they must write it from scratch.

    Long Story Short:

CO and CoX cannot legally use eachothers code, but can use ideas. CoX cannot drop the Cryptic logo since it is still using the Cryptic Engine.

    Side Note:

Since the day that PNC bought CoX, they have been working on things said to be impossible by Cryptic. These same things are the things that Cryptic magically made possible with their new game. Its not all that bizzar it would take both companies about the same time to come out with "impossible" features. The AE arguement

I agree MA has changed the game. So has IO's. So had ED. So has GDN. So has the Market. So has the advent of CoV. So has Sking/Mentoring. So has ITF. So has just about every thing they have added since I1.

I remember ITF spam. It was worse than MA spam, since people used global chan's to spam ITF.

I Remember KTF spam. When every 10 mins you would have the same people spamming global chans for speed KTF's.

My view on MA is summed up by this post: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...1&postcount=15

Which is summarised by this quote:

If that's not how you have fun, leave AP and enjoy the fairly vast world of "Content." Either way, there is plenty of game for everyone you enjoy

Long Answer: 50/50. For everything that Sparky does well someone can counter with a reason why you don't need it. Long animation and heavy end cost make it annoying to cast in a fight and unless you're fighting one really tough opponent the little guy never focuses on one target to help you finish him/her.

Damage vs. Endurance question: Draining is all or nothing. If you're not getting enough from what the other attacks do, Sparky won't put you over the top there either. Slot for damage. Sparky is inherently accurate, so while leveling up 1 Acc, 3 Dmg, 1 End redux should be enough before IOs.

    IOs:
    Pro -
Soulbound Alliegence or Pet Recharge sets work well with it.
    Con -
You're better off with Zapp and Sting of the Manticore's bonuses.

    Defiance:
    Pro -
    Woo! +20.5 damage!
    Con -
Don't need that. You'll make up for it by not having to wait 3+ seconds to cast Sparky.

I like the little guy but often forget to cast it.

If you have a free power, it's worth it (my main is elec/nrg - I don't need a snipe blast anyway with Boost Range - so I took Sparky to watch my back while I blap).
I agree with almost everything here, except: IO's Efficacy Adaptor is another decent choice. Why? Because as you sap, Sparky will help keep ther enemies' end down, so you don't have to work so hard. But really i would say 2 damage, 1 acc, 1 end red, 1 end mod is optimal close to optimal.

    Time Bomb

Its a ghostable nuke. I loved it on my ele/dev.

Ok want to see a massive BOOM with a screen full of orange numbers?

Using any ghost like power, walk up, Drop Time bomb, count to about 6, drop a trip mine, and que your nuke. Anything less than EB's are chunky salsa.

The other option is: become your very own rolling nuke. Use TB on one spawn, use your T9 primary on the next, TB on the next, etc.

Also there just isnt anything quite as cool as dripping a time bomb on invasion weekends/october.

Reason I currently don't have it: Im a team player that is working on healing badge (cause my ele/dev toon is my main badger).

P.S. MA has made TM and TB less useful since everyone in it is generally more impatient, and doesnt want to give you time to setup awesome pyrotechnics. And no I'm not bashing MA, just giving one other reason my main build doesn't have TB. My alt build is a total solo build, so i got as many "nukes" as i can fit.

Well is what i read into it , so far.
That is correct. The only part that is sorta off is you can set the mish to spawn at +4, so the mobs are at +5 vs the sk's, and +4 vs everyone else. That being said, if you can solo +4 mishes spawned for extra people, without their help, you deserve to PL them that way. If you need their help, then its not really PLing them, its just running (or farming) hard mish's. If you are farming, and can kill at +4, then why have the extra people.... more rewards for you if you are alone.

PLing at +4 will become more of a "your my friend and I'll help you" over the current system of "LFM any, we want you to doorsit"

Can the new system be abused, YES. Can the new system be abused as quickly or easily as the old system, NO. They arn't removing PLing, farming, or any of that. They are minimising it, and its impact of the game. Its not as easy after I16, so it will happen less. Lazy people get PL'd. Active people dont PL (they play the game for content, farm, or whatever). This new system rewards active people for not PLing others, while giving nothing to lazy people in return. Lazy people will have to find a "new" way to be lazy.

My answer from the time I was 10 and till this day was to simply get up and walk out the door if I didnt do it (man do control freaks hate that) or if I did it to simply own up to it.

Now allthough I do belive that in this instance this fellow is definately overreacting. However there has been enough changes made recently that definately made me feel similar to the way he does, minus the frothing at the mouth part. In fact the last time I "walked out the door" I had no intention of coming back. However I had enough friends still playing that when they started telling me what was being done it made me curious enough to come back. Not to mention I was not really enjoying any of the other games I tried. Had CO been out at the time I felt that way odds are I would know nothing about I15 or I16 and I would not be making this post.

That being said I have allready pre ordered and bought the life time subscription for CO. I will be playing that game. As to if I will remain playing CoX well the ball is in their court and this is a single step in the right direction. CO will also have to do some good things to keep me. Competition is healthy and I look forward to what both have planned to keep their customers.

I also know one of those friends who is leaving the game after playing with it since release. If I am not mistaken he has never not paid for a month. Yet he is quitting the game. The reason is for something so simple. With his extensive play time he has done virtually all the content in the game. So when he wanted a new toon he simply used the AE to farm it up. He didnt really feel like grinidng through the terrible teens, hes done it, why do it again. He had two characters he leveled this way deleted. . . .

To me that was simply stupid on the developers part. Now he and his wife will be taking their business somewhere else, both accounts. Not because that was such a big deal I think more like it was the straw that broke the camels back. Fix the exploit, in this case the bridging, and move on. Deleting characters is very much a power trip thing to do and it is going to cost you customers. Why should someone who has done it all allready 20 or 30 times have to do it yet again. Maybe that should have been a vetran badge somewhere along the way. Give the vets the option to create a character that starts at either level 1 or level 20. Because after 36 or heck even after 24 months grinding through the levels 10 to 20 became something alot of us REALLY didnt want to do again.

I know with over 54 months I dont have any urge to grind up any new toons. I have a couple I pld to 15 or 20. Mainly for stamina or to be able to do a Cap SF which usually gets you close to 20 and is for me more fun than generic missions. Sometimes I ll make my own map and solo it at low levels with a mobs and mobs of skulls. For me thats about as exciting as the other missions. Not that they are bad missions or bad stories, some of them are very good. (Boccor springs to mind) It's just that I have done them so many times.

As for how education now works, it's a differant world than you grew up in, or maybe you just went to a bad school with mediocre teachers. But again, the students are bad for not turning in the culprit making all their lives worse. Which goes back to only the good gets punished when many are being bad. Good students wouldn't let the entire class take flack for the actions of an individual. Good also is based off action rather than grades. Anyone can suckup and get good grades.

As for your rant about leaving, coming back, paying for lifetime at CO and staying only if CoX is good enough... your not needed here. CO will fail (lifetime memberships to a pay per month game is usually the last straw a game will use to get an influx before they go broke).

And Ive gotten bored with CoX, but you didn't see me make a big deal about moving onto a new game, nor have I promoted any of those games. Some I genuinly have enjoyed. Most have been free, some have not. It serves no purpose other than to cause dissent. On a ship, you would be keelhauled for mutiny. I live my life by a code of conduct. Be as honest as I can be. Try to not infringe on others enjoyment. I am not telling you how to play this game, but we don't care about CO. Most of us are anti CO since they were the ones that for a while were ruining this game (Cryptic is the first dev team for CoX and are using the exact same engine with a little Fx mods for CO, and a minor ammount of changes). So the only reason I can see that someone would bring up the competition in a positive light, is to bring down moral here. That infringes upon our enjoyment of the time we spend here. SO either A) you are a spy from the competition trying to invoke mutiny, or B) you arn't happy here, and need to move on. No need to make it grandeouse and try pulling others with you. If the are unhappy, they too will move on. Either way, let us be happy, and take your misery, doom and gloom, elsewhere.

Id rather be a happy sheep over a miserable donkey. Sadly, I am to opinionated to really be a sheep, so instead Ill be a happy Lombax.

P.S. I hate the lvl 1-49 grind, and yet most of my characters are in that range because I rarely PL for more than a few level to get out of a painful range. like lvl 17-19, 29-32. Two of the worst spots in the game.

Some have pointed out their displeasure, but you are being over verbose in sayin SSK will be the downfall of mankind. Take your SnakeOil back to CO, and leave us shiney happy people alone.

As a side note, I work for a highschool, and oddly enough, the only time the good gets punished for the bad student's actions is when a large population is doing wrong. Generally the good are unaffected by changes that the bad students force.

The good players play both in and out of MA, TF, Radios, Content, in teams or solo for the fun of playing. Even Min/Maxers enjoy the game for the game. The bad, abuse the system, by finding the optimal way of "beating the system."

Bad players abused Cathedral of Pain. Bad Players abused Com Officers. Bad Players abused Wolves/demons/etc. Bad players abused Green Mito's. Bad players are also called Munchkins in the gaming community. If you cheat and can get away with it, its allowed. Bridging, even the auto bridging MA does, is an abuse that needs fixed. I abuse MA. Not alot, but from time to time I will play a "farm" and PL my wife, or she PL me. This system will not hurt, a single good player. The soloist will not notice any differance, and us perma-teamers will love how easy life becomes. OH-NOES we cant maximise our gains by being 5 below the leader anymore, and instead we can actually contribute.

Life here for all of us on CoX is looking great.
  14. I have always hated Mentor Tetris. I hate that to level on TF's (my fave way of getting to 30) i will have to run most of them twice over, but I am still happy about this announcement.

My wife loving her scrapper, and me wanting to play my MM means we can party in RWZ now, super.

But better than making MA IN Pocket D, why not make a new instanced map off of Pocket D that leads to a co-op MA dimension. That way all the broadcasts, locals, etc are on a map devoted to MA.

Or better yet, put MA computers and holodeck in the Paragon Dance Party (http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Bum) and link it to both sides. Then you use PD for all the events, RPing, etc... and PDP for co-op MA's.
  15. To avoid having to exemp/unexemp by quitting team rejoining, etc, just play a game of pass the star. Team leader sets the level of the team. You could even have a lvl 30 person set the mish for 8 people, and pass the star to a lvl 32, so everyone can just sweep through, if you really wanted.
  16. Speed Boost is why I won't play a Kin.

Assuming it lasts about 90 seconds (I personally think its less, and dont feel like looking it up) and it has a 1 second cast time, and a 1 second wait time, and people want ID for mez protection, which lasts about as long as SB, has same cast ime, and same recharge, and adding in 3 imps, your talking 10 beings taking about 2 seconds each, minimum of 20 seconds out of every 90 you are buffing just these two powers (even w/o ID its the same time, but half the end usage). I like to ply the game, I do not like playing DDR. Dont get me wrong, my blasters and scrappers love kins, but i played one for a while a deleted cause i was bored with perma buffing.
  17. For quite a while, I have told my SG when they ask what to make (disscounting redside):

"HEATs add quantums (at the time were actually a bit of a problem) so don't play a HEAT.

Defenders add nothing a troller or blaster cant add, and trollers and blasters do it better, so don't play a defender.

If you can kill fast enough, you don't need to mez the enemy, so troller is out. (tho I have corrected that to add in bubblers, kins, rad's and sonics from time to time)

If you kill fast enough, you dont need aggro management, so tanker is out.

Play a scrapper or blaster, and add to the teams DPS."

As a side note, the best team ive ever been on was a fire/kin; 4 /shield scrappers of which 1 was fire, 1 was dark, 2 were BS; and we had 3 blasters, 1 fire/fire, 1 ele/ele, 1 psy/mm. That was a fun team.

As for if you add redside as an option, 8 Masterminds. Specifically, i want 8 thugs and them all use gangwar. I'm not saying its the optimal party, but man, when your side outnumbers the enemy 10:1....
  18. I know... and its funny, i got -fame for the post. Notice the time travel part. Oh well, it balances the +fame i got from my AE foodfight thread.

I find it silly getting -fame here for giving at 100% truthful, even if misleading, just cause someone wanted to know the fastest way to 50.

BTW Cathedral is the fastest way, even though it is disabled.

Edit: looks like more people want to defame me for being "incorrect"

Get it right, I am correct and misleading. At least look it up before you are gonna give a reason.
  19. Fastest way to 50 is to get into a raid based SG/VG and talk them into doing the "Cathedral of Pain Trial." Deliver the goods, and keep clicking the end contact. There is a glitch (exploit if you will) that gives you mish complete xp, while not finishing the mish. You can just click your way to lvl 50. Only takes a few hours, and time travel, but if your over level 25, you can go to Ouroboros to travel in time.

The other cool thing is by doing "Cathedral of Pain Trial" you help your SG get some really nift base items (like debt protection, or +dmg).

You take a Smoke Break after each mish? Man I need to join your team, my teams always take 1 every 2 hours. They just arn't trying hard enough I guess.
  21. I love the math in the post.

That said, My wife primarly plays her lvl 50 Kat/SR scrapper. She solos invin mishs, or heroic 8 person mishes. She never rests, never takes a breather during a mish. She just pushes forward at non super speeded 58 mi/hr (she slotted quickness, swift, and sprint for speed so she doesnt suffer suppression). Its like watching a blender. She doesn't use elude because the crash slows her down. Before Sets her def was at about +35% and face planted a bit too often. With each 5% she lasts quite a bit longer. At +40% she still died, even with insp, at +45% she doesnt die unless she is soloing an AV.

Also soft cap is important bacuse of def cascade. The higher your def, the more you can lose before always getting hit. For her SR toon, this is somewhat important.

    Dual Pistols

Something I just read made me think.... Dual Blades were made so that they are distinctly different than Kat or Broad Sword, but making combo buff/debuffs. What about making DP a DDR set like DB, where each power is slightly underwhelming on its own, but in the proper order, makes some cool stuff happen.

Something like "Snap Shot" (or shoot from the hip, or quick draw, some thing like that)-> "Double shot" (some sort of shot from both guns) -> Empty the clips (or lead rain, or some sort of massive dot attack) -> debuffs the enemy's def and drains some end (cause trying to dodge all that is tireing).

Or you could have something like "Aimed shot" (either a short distance snipe, or a bit of a long animation with massive damage) -> "Double Click" (A power that copies your last attack base stats, modified by the enhancements on DC, with a bit more end cost) -> "Driving Attack" (an ST attack that is like empty the clips but w/o bullets going everywhere) -> Resistance debuff since the idea is you are piling on all your hits to a very localized area, making a weakspot.

Heck it would be cool as hell to have a Double click sort of power, or a Toggle that causes you to counterattack if you are not in the middle of an animation, for a small bit of end (like a repel toggle).

I doubt DP will have stuff quite that cool, but still looking forward to getting another blaster.

Okay, then sitting at a table isn't role-playing either.
Until you actually dress-up in a costume and "pretend" that you are your character and actually do physical combat with things then you aren't role-playing?

I can't say that I've run or worked at a gaming store, but I can say that I played in pen-and-paper RPGs for about 20 years or so before I started playing CoH. I free-lance wrote for a RPG gaming company for around 3 years.
Making your own call on what role-playing is just that.

There are different levels of role-playing.
You definitely aren't roll playing in a MMORPG as there are no dice to roll.

I have never bothered with all the OOC garbage in CoX because when you talk about mechanics and such, you are obviously OOC. THere are too many times in CoX that you can't chat in character fast enough to get your ideas across to your party in a timely fashion. That is simply how it is.
However, when you have time to stand around outside of a mission waiting on people or you are standing around in the Pocket D trying to RP that is role-playing as far as I'm concerned.

Nitpick how you would like. That is up to you.

I'm not a mini-maxer in CoX. I build my characters based on character conception as much as possible; I don't use Hero Planner or any character building guides. That isn't to say that I don't utilize Raptor packs or the like to get around with a magic character if they are available.

As for the mechanics of the game not being RP friendly, sure they aren't. But neither are +2 Swords in D&D. As soon as you say +2 the RP is out the window according to your definition. And on the D&D note, as soon as the DM talks about situations they are occ or are you saying as taking on a narrator point of view that they are still role-playing?
But you don't have to address mechanics while you are role-playing. The hows and whys of what or how your character is doing something is up to you to decide in CoX. If you don't want to decide that you are casting spells or built some tech gear then you are the one that isn't role-playing. Players that take time to do so are.

Each part of the role-playing process is just that.
Even you agree that character conception is part of that process. In fact, it is fundamental in role-playing. With out having a character conception, there is no character to role-play.

Is character conception sometimes used as an excuse for character's powers? Sure. Isn't that the point?

Once that foundation is in place, then you can build more on the role-playing to your own tastes and to the level that others will interact with you as-they-say "ic".

If you don't want to have a RP experience in an MMORPG that is your choice.

There are those of us that do RP on various levels in CoX - regardless of your opinion or not.
Oddly enough I did not bring up sitting at a computer. I brought up the In game referances to mechanics that don't exist in the world of the game. Read some comics (especially the CoH ones). They never ask "anyone got a wakie" or "can i get a rez here." That is not in the setting. You break character each and every time to deal with things on the Meta Game level. Breaking charcter constantly is not Role Playing. And I agree that as soon as you say "+2 sword" you are in the meta realm... and guess what, back when D&D was made, during game you wouldn't call it a +2 sword untill after game. During game you would call it "A masterfull sword, of a quality supirior to your own" or "Although this sword was made well, it's quality is lacking in comparison to this other sword." Its the newer generations that are all about Rolling the dice that are turing Role Playing into Roll playing. I am not saying either playstyle is wrong, but dont call a duck a sheep. A Duck is a duck, a sheep is a sheep. And as I pointed out, even if you are IC all the time, the world around you is not. Everytime you hand out a wakie to someone, use AOL speak, say BRB phone, you are breaking character. Every time someone asks for a wakie while passed out, does your character marvel at how they are talking while passed out? Generally OOC discussions are also away from table. When a member steps away from the table, groups halt, or come up with some IC reason their character doesnt know whats going on (Ive kno wn characters to spend alot of time in the woods using a nearby tree, while everyone else deals with a random encounter. Twice he has brough back the encounter back to us).

Everyone steps out for a break pausing game, so they can talk OOC without ruining the atmosphere in a good Role playing group. But in the world of MMOG's the OOC is a persistant world affect that all characters deal with all the time. your IC roleplay gets interupted with a booming voice of global channel saying "ITF LF DPS, PST <Person X>"

Even if your character ignores all that, it still is there distracing the players from the IC interactions. Usually when RL calls bad enough, the gaming group pauses, and calls it a day/night, BSing for a bit, and moves on. Oddly enough it usually takes about a recap+30 mins for things to get going next time there is a game.

Oh and if you want experiance with gameing, okay, 20 years of RP experiance between D&D 1.0, AD&D, D&D3.0/3.5, D&D4ed, RIFTS, Beyond the supernatural, Robotech, Nightbane, Heroes Unlimited, Quags (both serious runs and funny runs), Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, D100 Middle Earth RPG, BESM, Abeo, Traveler, Mega Traveler, Marvel Superheroes % system, Icon Star trek, d6 star wars, d20 star wars, Mutants and masterminds, Paranoia, Old WoD Whitewolf (Tabletop and LARP), New WoD Whitewolf, to name a few. This is not mentioning CCG's, MMOG's, Strategy war games, Strategy tabletop games. Plus Ive helped write 3 independant systems. I kinda grew up in gaming stores, have listened to peoples stories, went to conventions, really am a gaming nerd. Good thing my wife is into the same things, heck we met on a MUD (much closer to RPG than MMO's have).

I like playing both Role and Roll, but I never delude myself into thinking I am Role playing when im Roll playing, or just sitting around with a character sheet BSing for a few hours. Oh and yes that is an option, which is loosely playing mechanics, but really just socialising with friends. That is also not Role playing, nor Roll playing... thats just BSing.

Oh and if i quit gaming, you can have my collection of books. Its only 5 bookcases worth (Palladium and GURPS are massive collections, followed closely by OWoD).

I've seen role-playing in CoX and not just in the Pocket D on Virtue, and not just by the few players that I normal play with. I PuG a lot and many times spontaneous RP breaks out about one thing or another.

I'm not saying that everyone is strictly "in character" the entire time. I'm saying that role-playing does go on. In fact, as soon as you write a bio that is a back-story, you are role-playing and there are plenty of characters with back-story bios.
This attitude of "when you make a back story you are role playing" is the exact attatude that is destroying alot of table top groups. (And yes I can say that having 3 years of managing a old fashioned gaming store with books, dice, games, etc). We started making a distinction between Role Playing and Roll Playing. Role playing is where the characters stay IC, and actually work on building a minds eye reproduction of the events. Roll playing is where you make a throw away backstory explaining why you are the way you are, so that you can explain off min/maxing or munchkining, and spend all your time in combat proving how godly your build is. People that step out of character, or use game terms when interacting with the world/NPC's pull people further out of the IC Minds eye event, and more into the OOC mechanics, thus ruining the experiance for people who truly IC.

I am not saying people in MMO's don't attempt to RP, but between the nessessairy jargon it takes to play, all of the OOC people, global channels, etc, you cant say its a Role Playing experiance. Otherwise i find it magical that every hero and villian knows the approx difficulty of each enemy they face, the name of each entity they meet, even on missions where you are discovering something supposedly for the first time. I also find it amazing that close to a hundred trinkits can be carried, as well as 15 or so recipes for making "stuff," as well as generic "enhancements" that somehow alter powers no matter what fuels them (somehow someone that pulls energy directly from a demon lord can enhance with the same set of pieces of equipment that a cyborg uses, or a mutant). On top of that everyone walks around with tangible idea that for a limited time can fix problems, like health or endurance, or heck you can use an tangible idea while passed out to wake yourself back up (Its like pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps). The elements that define the MMO are the elements that take you out of RPing. So yes on a very small and limited basis you can RP, but the more you play, the more you start Rolling, over Roleing.

Quick question, how many times has a strict Role Playing character done ITF, or KTF, or Sister Psy TF, or... or... or.... I can list hundreds of things that in the life of said character, they have broken their own IC timeline (Even Age of Apoclypse was a single break in timelines. I guess in comics the closest youll find is the Bishop/Cable/Strife coexisting different simultanious futures). I mean this isn't Star Trek online.

When making a backstory in a game like this, you are generally setting a theme for the character, which is different than actually Role Playing. Though with all the meta knowledge, I guess you could be Role Playing as "City of Deadpools"

Ok so I'll admit, you are right, we all have a blanket assumption about Roleplaying in Paragon city, we all interact on the MetaGaming level that Deadpool exists on. I see and understand, It just took me a while to see it, lets everyone add "Meta Gaming" and "Meta Knowlege" to all our "RP" toons so that they can be IC and still interact with an OOC world.
  25. Okay, so for all you software experts (I am really good with hardware, but not really up to date with software) and although this is off topic, reading your posts have made me think of my rig, so here it goes:

I am currently running a 64 bit Vista machine, running AMD dual core 3.0Ghz (so about 6Ghz total), 8 gigs of memory, with a 8200 Hybrid SLI Mobo, a GT9800 (I checked and the model im using supports Hybrid tech), between the Mobo and 9800, i run 3 screens (i don't feel like using the VGA port on the Mobo, or else i could run 4).

The issue I am having is with the NVIDIA drivers.... 64 bit vista evidently wont download and/or install the hybrid drivers, so i cant set the screens to turn on or off based on whats going on, using less power. As a side affect, when I am running CoX on high settings (or any graphics intensive game) I get a Sli line where there are two slightly differant refresh rates. (By SLi line i mean all 3 screen are being read as 1, and the mobo and 9800 work together the way multiple sli cards linked run, so the 8200 processes the top 1/3 of the screen, and the 9800 the bottom 2/3). On lower settings its fine, and if I turn off the Mobo graphics drivers, the 9800 runs beautifully.

So what I am looking for is eaither the Vista hybrid 64bit app, or to find out if Win7 has 64bit setup and has the app on it.

Other than that, is there a way, without buying a splitter, to have multiple screens being read as 1, IE Coh reads the desktop's resolution, and i can't stretch the windowed mode through all three screens (at some point the client doesnt like being pulled ant further), and I am wanting to make some multi monitor screen shots.

Thanks for any help you might have.
