Quote:We'll see. While that's commendable of you, the people who frequent this forum are more likely to have posted in TheMarket something along the lines of "Oops, I just bid 10 mil each on a stack of 10 Alc Gold." followed by some laughing at their expense, and everyone being over it 10 minutes later.
The people who are going to feel the loss the most probably don't come here, if they even post on the forums at all.
There's also the possibility that someone did it deliberately: Alc Golds have been spiking really high lately, and someone with scads of cash may have decided to pay the high price without checking to see if the low price was available, because they feel that their time is more valuable than a few (million) Inf.
There's also the possibility of it just being a random "gift". I know several people who will just randomly add a bunch of extra zeroes to an item, in the hopes that a lowbie or new player wins the lottery and catches that sale.
Ultimately, I doubt anyone will claim it. Enjoy your windfall, and don't feel bad about it. -
I have a Super Strength/Willpower Brute slotted out below with generic I/Os. I have been trying to run solo and just farm casually. I want to gather Inf like everyone else. The problem is that I die. Constantly. Radio missions. Tip missions. AE. I only have things set at +0/x3 and I die silly numbers of times in missions.
My Katana/Fire Scrapper is only in SOs and has an easier time than this. What did I miss? You're going to tell me it is user error and it probably is but I am frustrated after spending all the time to gather and craft (which I HATE) the I/Os and then fall flat in combat.

How do I open the character stat console with defense, resists et cetera displayed?
I saw this window on a couple tube videos and I have heard about it here on the forums but I don't know how to open it. I am real curious what my characters stats look like. Is it part of the regular game or an add-on? -
[Not a contest. There will be no 'winner'. It may be that there is no resolution to this. Greedy trolls please don't even read past this point.]
No where else to ask.
I logged in a character that I had not played in about 10 days. I checked the market because I was notified of sales.
I sold X amount of Alchemical Gold.
I received X amount of Inf for it.
I feel this sale was a mistake on the buyers part. It just isn't worth what I got, and if there is a creditable reply I am willing to return the proceeds.
If you messed up in the Market reply here. -
Your scenario is true. There are a couple howevers that also apply to it.
One, the design of the market interface hides that window of opportunity you describe between 20k-80k. A fully transparent market, like the one we (should) have by law in real life, would not hide that information. Everyone should be able to easily see and capitalize on opportunities. In this game we can't simply due to the interface. Hide is too strong a term I suppose. Obscure maybe is better?
Two, the fact that we have a game and not a life in Paragon City leads to strange behavior. People don't pay attention to things. They may have an hour or less and they go out and punch bad guys rather than min/max the market. This just makes point One larger. It gives greater opportunity to people that do take the time to pay attention. Is it appropriate the larger population pay for their choice In A Game? Sure, to a point, I think many people would agree to pay for convenience. Are they paying enough right now? Opinions differ. Are they paying too much right now? Opinions differ.
Three, do we really have the critical mass in population for real market self correction methods to work in a timely manner? In your example how many people in CoH are availible to jump on that 60k price disparity? There is a lag. How long does the lag go on? How many people are paying too much on how many items because there are not enough people looking to fill the holes? I think we skirt a real economy because our size also contributes to the inequalities that pop up. Again number Two inflates this. Market forces are slow to move because there are too few people available or willing to put them to action. (Say it twice and maybe they will understand the badly worded idea??)
I would rather that the market players have fewer opportunities for profit and those opportunities are smaller margins **IF** that gives the larger population more opportunities to quickly and cheaply get 'stuff' that allows them to enhance their enjoyment of the the larger game. Lets really stress that last part. Enhance their enjoyment. It is a game. We are all here to have fun. Unfun things should be kept to a minimum. Fun things should be maximized where possible. That outcome is desirable and is the opening lecture in Game Design 101.
So I do not agree with people that yell, "Cheater!" or exploiter or whatever. I do think that the Market is so important to the larger game that it's design should support that larger game with ease of use rather than slow things down. Right now it is my opinion that it slows things down for too many of us.
I also know it will not get any real changes soon. If ever. -
I only kind of do. I have junk piled up that I don't have the energy to deal with. I want to go out punch bad guys and take their stuff but I don't want to fiddle with it to turn it into something useful. I am also way too frugal to be that picky and get away with it. I don't want someone else making millions on my laziness so I end up hoarding.
Many months ago I was poor. Several months ago I probably wasn't as poor as I thought. After looking around at my googolplex of alts this last month (last week actually) and taking stock of my processions I have stopped saying I am poor but I all my 'wealth' is tied up. I am not liquid.
All that is a result of my inaction but I have played other MMOs and didn't have this problem. I would run to Ironforge (in That-Other-Game) and spend an hour 'marketing' and then wonder where the time went. In my first online game the markets where not merged and there were 20(?) towns. I had fun in that environment. The CoH market just seems to stop the whole show for me.
I am trying to find that happy medium where I can get things done with all my 'stuff' and go out to stomp bad guys. Mostly lately I hit a roadblock trying to get crafting done, start another project and find yet another roadblock. Patience is a virtue but Gaming Time is precious, I am only willing to be so virtuous and no more. I may throw up my hands and go punch bad guys or I may just log for the night. It is about 50/50 right now.
Quote:a lot of people do not fully understand the implications of the lowest listing price always selling first.
I bow to your wisdom. -
Quote:Don't call people stupid because they don't like playing a mini-game inside the larger game. I don't like the market. I don't like the rules. I HATE the limitations surrounding the market that make it difficult to get done what I want to get done and move one. The limiting of storage for recipes. The limiting storage for everything may be healthy for the economy but it it a barrier I have to fight to participate in an activity I don't really like.[EDIT]
To avoid this post being completely nonconstructive: You can get all eight Exploration Badges in any of the main zones for an accolade that gives 5 reward merits per zone. Also,

[/EDIT]
I'm sorry that you're incapable of the basics of financial self-defense in this game.
But if you're going to blame me because you're stupid, shallow and greedy: I reject your reality and substitute my own.
Yes. You're greedy. You want the good stuff. You see other kids selling each other the good stuff. You want the other kids to sell you the good stuff AND YOU WANT TO PAY LESS.
You've built some sort of dream world where evil people like me set the prices. I actually HAD a couple of Luck of the Gamblers at level 35 about a month ago- I do my tips, I get my reward merits- and I looked at the going rate, 150 million, and said "I think I can list for 155 million and get more than 150 million." You want to know what happened? My amazing mind control powers worked? NO. I pulled em, relisted at 141 million and they sold at 150 million in ONE DAY. Cost of lesson: 15 million inf in fees.
Now I have one more data point than you do. I declare victory and leave.
People that don't want to play the game your way are not necessarily stupid. You are not usually so rude as to say they are. I have read many of you posts and I find you knowledgeable if a bit dismissive of people that "just don't get it" but usually not directly insulting. -
So Alchemical Silver is an item where the speculation of marketeers doesn't evenly spread out the supply over time or flatten out volatile price swings. It is an item where actual shortages can be introduced and immediate profits made. Interesting.
-
I see you didn't pick up on what puzzled me. I don't (didn't) see any other item with half that many bids.
Fourteen thousand bids.
Why should Alchemical Silver far outstrip other common salvage in demand? I understand that high demand will make high price. I understand that certain demographics have resources at certain levels and comfort zones for spending those resources. What I don't have a faint clue about is why so many bids on that item are placed. It appears to be an outlier to me because of that fact. What would cause this? -
Alchemical Silver.
There are 14,456 bids.
There are 521 for sale.
Last 5 (all 2010-11-24):
300,000
300,000
1,500,000
1,011,111
250,000
How should we read this? -
Quote:This.I'd add another category, or expand on #2. That is the people who don't understand the difference in price between Kinetic combat and Smashing Haymaker, or between Obliteration and Multistrike does not equate to a similar difference in performance. People with money pay huge amounts for a small gain. Too many people start to move from SOs to IOs and think they need the best, not realizing what an enormous difference getting the low-end sets will make.
I have NO CLUE which sets to look for or why they may be good for one character but not so good for another. I think a lot of you take your knowledge of the game for granted.
Literally I don't know those names and I don't know what they would slot in. I know the mechanics but not specifics. I may be a step up from a lot of more casual players too. (well maybe... it's possible.. shut up!!)
Anyway, without that knowledge it is hard to make wise decisions when selling. All a lot of us have to go by is the last 5 list. -
Good in theory but for the part that your number of bids and sales are very limited (16) and without knowledge, which you admit is hard earned, that bid may stay there for weeks. The space it takes up is a valuable resource. At least BIDs cost no money up front and you can cancel. I returned to the game last spring and started out all excited about the new (to me) market and lost my shirt SELLing because current prices for what I had was at an all time high or something. My salvage and stuff never did sell and I lost what was to me at the time a lot on the listing charge. I loathe the "last 5 list".
Edit: That was a reply to Adeon Hawkwood of course. And also your remark about other games is right too. I might be playing Eve if I liked playing the market. I don't.
Edit 2: I have one character that has IOs. Two sets. She is 26 in Praetoria. I have two level 50s. SOs across the board... I lied, I have three 50s now but all SOs. -
It is very nice of you to do this give away. I doubt there is another game with a community as charitable as this one. (None for me thanks)
--
I don't know why I think this is a good place for my musings but...
Is there another game where the Market causes such angst? (Wrong word, someone else supply a better one)
I have played many MMOs. It has been a while since I was logged on to another one but I don't remember sitting in front of the PC and feeling kind of lost on what to do. Is it just me? Is it the 14,873 different recipes? or the 326,854 pieces of salvage? Is it the 421 IO sets?
Is it the fact that I don't know which of all that is what I need/want? Is it the fact that the secret nature of the sales obscure the values and trends that are more apparent in open, non-secretive markets in other games?
I like the fact that the core elements of CoH are designed differently than other MMOs. I wish they hadn't broken new ground on the market design though. It is the only part of this game I hate and it is much too important to ignore. I do ignore it though, until I am drowning in things to sell and wanting to buy and still I know every transaction I make is a bad deal for me and feeding somebody that is a market analyst in real life. The fact people come to this forum and talk about the sheep isn't real helpful either. (very few I know) -
Too much work for the devs. It will never happen. They aren't sitting at their desks playing WoW all day you know. These are real jobs and they are overloaded as it is.

Best. Community. Anywhere.
I was kind of bummed when this happened. I don't do much marketing and I was excited that I found something that would for me, sell for serious cash.
BBQ_Pork above, and others have in acts of kindness made up for my loss many times over. It's hard to be sad at this point.
Arigato. Merci. Danke. Gracias. Thank you all. -
I sent a 20million inf recipe (first thing like that I have ever had) to @ instead of @. I actually had an account all and somehow got mixed up. It is late and I am dumb even when awake.
Is there any way that I can find out if the account is even active? I suspect I have lost the item. I sent a message but have little hope.
I hate using email as storage and transfer. -
Definitely not a guide.
Belongs in the hie thee section. -
Not a guide..?
Belongs in the Brute section..? -
The Haves rarely meet the Have-nots and in my experience they find it difficult to relate when they do.
