Castle, you are sneaky. Very sneaky. Had me thinking no Electric control for a very long time! Cool stuff!

Quote:Castle says he'll live with the def cap as it is, so he's going to be fine with people getting to it. The BotZ change just shows that they don't want to make it too easy. The change came from how much defense the set could give for little investment: it was out of whack compared to other sets. The other sets that give ranged defense have been around for longer, and they require more investment than BotZ did.I understood that the cap would not be changed again. That wasn't my worry. What I am worried about is more backdoor nerfs to defense for squishies. It really doesn't matter if you don't change the cap but lower the enhancement values of IOs that people use to achieve high levels of defense.
Given all that, I wouldn't worry about it so much. I've heard some people cite Kinetic Combat as a worry now, but it's not really comparable. It's confined to melee powers, requires four slots, and the enhancement from those four slots isn't all that great (it it's an actual power you'd want to use, and a Blaster not using their melee attacks would be gimping themselves). I would say it's balanced for what it does, and it's certainly not as good as BotZ was for Ranged and AOE. -
That works for me, too. Think I have all my Blasters at 30-35% to ranged or Smash/Lethal, and they are all set to being the equivalent of 3-4 heroes when they solo. I'll pop a purple when facing an EB or something like that, but it's not usually needed.
-
Sure, I'll try to remember to shout out when I'm on tonight. Hmmm, not sure who to bring on Tuesday. Probably should bring along Grey Pilgrim.
-
Quote:Heh, I once had a Controller try to tell my Tank that I wasn't controlling aggro well enough... he didn't seem to realize that he was getting pasted by all the AOEs targeted at me, as he liked to stand right by my Tanker. Glad you realized what was going on.Note to self: As squishy defender, do not follow tank into AOE Nemesis alpha strikes.
Gratz on the run. I think the one Sara Moore I was on took longer, though I was mean and had to take a break in the middle of it, so that's part of the reason, I'm sure. -
Hmmmm, but aren't the two separate and distinct things? Like the issue released around CoV?
I would love to see a staff set. I'm sure BAB and the other animators could come up with some cool stuff. Though I suppose I hope they don't go all Asian martial arts with it (hehe, or maybe they could offer different animation options). Quarterstaff moves would/could look quite powerful and cool, too. -
Quote:Staff set? Like bos or quarterstaves? They actually mentioned they wanted to do that?I bet we'll see Dark Control before Grav.
Oh, and because of the new sets the Staff set has moved up a few notches.
Castle is one sneaky bugger. He just posted that Electric Control was a long ways off in the Controller forums... like a month ago. Knew there were going to be other sets from War Witch's interviews, so it's fun to hear about those.
Figured incarnates would have to figure into the game somehow (just wish we wouldn't have to wait until I19 for it, unless I18 is coming out around GR). Doppelgangers sound cool, though I still hope they get a personal nemesis system going somehow. Lot of cool stuff thrown out there, just to keep us slavering. -
Quote:Okay, I am going to link you to that post, and you need to re-read it. Many people are misquoting it as you are, and I have to feel REALLY bad for Castle because of it. Here's the link.
While I can build a new one faster now, why would I want to? I don't want to be a doomcrier, but on the other thread I saw where castle insinuated he felt that squishies should have a defense cap considerably lower than it is now, whats next to be nerfed ? and just how much should be put in my way to get to good.
In that post, he states that it probably would have been a good idea to have AT-based defense caps. Back in Issue 5 or 7. We are now at Issue 17. So he is saying it would have been good to make that change YEARS ago. He then goes on to say that there was already a global defense nerf, and that is not going to be repeated. Meaning they will not be pushing down the def cap for Blasters or any other AT.
So no more doom-crying on that score. I personally think it would be a good idea to have AT based defense caps to help balance the game more, but you're lucky I'm not calling the shots there.Heck, I was expecting them to put those defense caps in place at some point, so I was surprised to see Castle post this. People should be happy about that, but they keep misreading the post! So stop it already!

I made it to SO levels with him and gave up. So low 20s. I knew things would get better with oil slick and all that, but the low damage of Defenders just drives me nuts. I do have a Sonic/Sonic Defender at level 44, so I know the "damage woes" don't really go away for me. I like the Sonic character well enough, but his low damage does tend to frustrate me when I play him- I don't even bother soloing with him (and I like to be able to team and solo with all of my characters).
I'm probably going to give up on Controllers and stick with Dominators after GR, too. I like my Earth/Storm Controller, but having to team from 1-32 on my Controllers just annoys me (slowly getting a Grav/Kin to that level). So that's why I'm wondering if Corruptors will be a solution for my Defender problem. Heh. -
Wow, an FF character with buff shields, will wonders never cease? I think we have to throw this former build in with MG's former Willpower build... under the category of utterly botched up.
-
Quote:I'm actually looking forward to that- BotZ prices were ridiculous (at least for the -kb recipes, the others weren't too bad). They're still going to be useful after this, but they'll at least be easier to get.If you can it'd probably be a good idea to sell any BotZ you may have quickly before the market totally crashes on them, if it hasn't already.
My Shield Tanker won't be quite so far over the def cap after this, but he'll still be over 45%. I have to adjust more on a couple of Blasters, but it's not a big deal. -
Well, let me explain my background a bit. When I tried TA/Archery on my Defender, I gave up at SO levels as he could not drop foes very fast, nor was I all that impressed with his debuffs at that point. I knew that the TA part of things would get better, but not the damage.
Hence my wondering about the setup for a Corrupter. I really would like an Archery/TA character, but Defenders just don't mesh with me well (I like Tanks, so I don't have to do uber damage... but I do want to do a decent amount of damage to solo with if needed). But perhaps Scourge does not make that much of a difference?
I could maybe try an Archery/Traps Corrupter (I have an Arch/Devices Blaster that I find fun), but I dunno. Yeah, I could try rolling both, but I like to avoid re-rolling if I can avoid it. I also have limited slot spaces on the servers I like to play on. -
Yes, I find that having Build-up recharge in 44 seconds is more than enough for me, especially with Fiery Embrace to throw in the mix. Kind of up to you if you want it up more.
I would agree with your assessment of Melt Armor as well. The debuff values aren't high, but it's an AOE and lasts for 40 seconds, which is nice. It's also okay with fewer slots, which you noticed. Fire Blast would be nice, but I didn't have the slots that it needs, either. Melt Armor looks quite spectacular, too. -
I do wish they had more resist bonuses out there as well. If nothing else, just to provide more options.
Interesting post from Castle on this. I'm rather surprised as well... I thought for sure some kind of AT-based def cap might be in the works, since defense was over the top. *sighs* Wish they would plan things out a little better: I actually think varying def caps based on the AT would be a good idea for the game and its balance.
If nothing else, this should make some of you feel better about changes in the works. The devs do not want another snafu like the GDN or Enhancement Diversification, that's for sure. Text of the post if you don't want the link.

Actually, you're right. I didn't know the system well enough at the time to argue that effectively, but it would definitely have been a better route to have followed.
That said, the GDN has already happened and isn't going to be repeated, so I live with the limitations imposed by that decision. -
Hmmmm, I would think there were less expensive ways to get 3% defense than a Gladiator recipe, EB. I'd have to look at your build to say, though. Probably not as dire as that, all the same.
I guess I am a little flabbergasted at how much people are taking this change to heart. Since IOs came out, they have only introduced more IOs, or buffed them. The only "nerfs" were for ones that were not working right anyway, like that Guassian's set, this BotZ thing, taunt sets not working right in auras, etc. The way people are talking, you would think nerfing these sets is par for the course... when it is extremely rare.
I know the two are technically different, but no one really complains when the addition of new sets or buffs requires respecing and rebuilding old builds... just the nerfs. Just a perspective issue, I know, but it might help those that are stinging about this more. -
Quote:It was much better than any other defense bonuses out there. For only two slots, you were getting more ranged defense than the Steadfast unique gets you, and you can slot multiples of those. Luck of the Gambler +Recharge is harder to do that with, given its cost, and lower availability of defense sets. It also seems that it's been around long enough, and they're okay with the amount of barriers there are to things like perma-hasten, etc. Whereas BotZ was just too much compared to other defense sets.I'm honestly surprised they didn't just make the set unique like they did with the Gaussian buildup piece.
Either way I only have 1 toon that uses this set and I can easily regain the ranged def by moving one piece. The AoE might take some work though.
At any rate the only reason I am annoyed was due to the small fortune the pieces cost. I didn't see the IOs being any more OP than many others out there that Castle has come out and said aren't changing.
I would agree that the set would have made a lot more sense as unique, but oh well.

Oh noes, Ham! That last set bonus stinks! The set has other things going for it. The proc is in line with other procs (better than some, since it's all energy), and the accuracy bonus somewhat makes up for the lower accuracy the set affords. We just need more sets to choose from, or to have the other two targeted AOEs revamped.
-
Could probably join in with my VEAT if you want to try it Saturday. If not, no worries.
-
Quote:To what? You can take the +recharge and +recovery from my cold, dead hands... As Minotaur said, they just need more targeted AOE sets: Posi is the only one with worthwhile bonuses, really. They noticed that with PbAOE recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if some got added in.Eh. Kinda saw this coming for a while.
Just wish they'd revamp Positron's Blast...
cozmic, Castle is on record as saying that it is far too easy to get a lot of defense from IO sets, but that he also knows he has to live with it (or something to that extent). I highly doubt there is going to be anything like a drastic change to IO sets. BotZ was just too good compared to other IO recipes, and it got slapped down.
Considering they made defense buffs easier to get a few issues back, and Castle was okay with that balance decision (or the devs were overall), I cannot see why they would possibly make any major changes. I think you're letting the doom cry too loudly in your heart.
I do hope you're not wishing for the days before ED, etc., though. Things were rather overpowered and silly back then...

Have to love these forums. You try to talk about the BotZ change logically, and people neg rep you. Tsk, tsk. (guessing this hapened on the big thread o'changes, not here). -
Yeah, it's cool, Penny. Be cool.
I would agree that they need to fix up the respec system... funny that Castle said he would pass that on, since I know that's been suggested plenty of times before. Guess you have to repeat yourself until you're heard?
Anyway, I'll have to fix up a couple of my builds because of this, but I'm not going to sweat it too much. Just part of the game. -
I would like to see an option to even move just a few slots around, rather than having to do a full respec. But there are balancing points for the devs... I know Posi is on record saying that our ability to even save 10 enhancements during a respec is "nice" thing... as in they would prefer not to allow even that, but it's something that is needed all the same.
Still, there is going to be some shakeup if it was seen as worthwhile to get multiple travel powers and slot them up with BotZ... the set is far too strong, given that. The devs have to balance that. Even more so if it is THAT earth-shattering for some people to have this taken away (though I have to doubt that it is that bad).
Pity on the unique thing if you're right, Voo. Should have just been implemented that way, I agree: I remember being surprised when they came in as strong as they were as well. -
I wouldn't worry that much about Burn. It'd be nice for AVs, I suppose, but you'll be fine on a team with what you have. If you want to solo AVs... not sure if you'd need it. Not sure what the DPS numbers are for it (and haven't really bothered looking into it, as I don't really enjoy the soloing AVs thing... EBs yes, since you run into them, but any Tanker can do that).
At any rate, I'd rather more defense on an all around build: it helps a lot soloing or tanking for a team.
Here's my Fire/Fire/Pyre build, though I went for a good amount of recharge. You could easily get more Smash/Lethal defense if you went for Kinetic Combats, but I didn't want that headache on this build: it's an alternative build for my Fire/Fire Tank. About 22% defense is plenty nice, from the experience I've had so far. Anyway, take from it what you want, and go for what you want on your build.

Question for the archers out there. I tried a TA/Archery Defender, and quit out... I just was too frustrated over the low damage. How does it compare for a Corrupter? It looks like the base damage is the same, but does Scourge, etc., make up for it? I would like to make a TA/Archery character work, so I'm hoping it will fly.
-
Heh.
Interesting about the rewards. I'm much more interested in merchandise like posters, t-shirts, or even game time cards, myself (though titles and costume codes are fun, too). Guess I shouldn't hold my breath for those since I was in the minority, there? -
I posted over there, but I'll do it again here. I would rather see the bonus have become unique, as in you could only slot one of these sets. I'm not sure if the tech was there for that (but I would think you could just make each part of the recipe unique), but it's an idea. I suppose someone could complain that they wanted more than one BotZ -KB, but that's pretty insane for how much they cost.
I wonder if there are other changes like this for I17? I know they're not going to mention any nerfs in a press release for a new issue, but I am curious about what other number tweaking they're going to be doing.
*added*
Vanum, Castle admitted that he just hasn't had time to look at this, and said it should have been done sooner. So he owned up to that. I would say he didn't even need to say that for such a minor change, but this makes the adjustment even more palatable, I would say. And another reason that I like our devs! -
Bah! I was in it for the rewards and got nothing! Nothing! See if I participate in another one!
Just kidding. Heh, I hope you have a good amount of data to work with now.
