SRSLY? That's a bold statement, David. I look forward to seeing this "awesome" you speak of.

Of course he isn't. He's not even hard as an elite boss goes, but he highlights in very specific terms what's possibly a new development direction, or perhaps even a new encounter theme for City of Heroes.

Out of curiosity, I took some, shall we say, very specifically optimized characters to fight him solo. These are characters that are slotted to the extreme end for teaming, including a sonic/sonic defender, an ice/ice blaster, and a dark/ss tank. In each case I was able to defeat Trapdoor with no temporary powers.

The difference between being able to fight him successfully and not being able to defeat him boiled down to two things: I was willing to think about how the encounter worked and was then willing to do what was necessary to beat him. It doesn't sound hard. The mission gives you all kinds of hints and clues as to what's needed, so it wasn't very hard to actually do, either.

The wonderful Apex Taskforce is another example of this new theme. In the second mission, players are given some broad visual clues as to what's needed to survive and then defeat the arch-villain at the end.

The reactions of players to those clues has ranged the gamut. Some people outright ignore them and are then frustrated that they can't win by the tired old rotes they're used to.

Some people misinterpret them dramatically. For example, I've seen more than one taskforce leader demand that players not fly during the encounter. Why? Because, 'it makes the death patches appear in the air where you can't see them to avoid them when they kill everything below them'.

AOE spheres be damned. Battle Maiden's death patches have become 'columns of death' that can reach from floor to ceiling.

Of course not only is misinformation spreading faster than a bootless truth, but the encounter is singling out those who lack an understanding of how certain parts of the game works.

Those who understand or are willing to learn about how the game works, however, and are also willing to take a look at the encounter as something that requires thought and action they may not be used to are quickly finding themselves with the 'Already Dead' badge and some other fun shinies.

"You are NOT gonna win this fight by standing still and clicking your power buttons over and over again. You're gonna THINK and you're gonna MOVE, or you're going to lose."

Good job, Devs. I appreciate the fun new content. And kudos to the players who get it!
    Moo,

    Can I "Like" your post?

'Cause I like it. Thanks for the vote of confidence and speaking out against people who want an "I Win" button. I wasn't too proud to ask for help against Trapdoor the...um...4th time I went up against him, and I got some new in-game friends in the bargain (much love, Lion Seed!).

Now granted I haven't tried him since the patch (which is still loading for me now), but I'm sure I could figure out a way to beat him eventually...and in my book "asking for help" is a definite "way to beat him".

It's nice when the bar gets raised...especially on stuff that's supposed to be our much desired "end game content".

Cowman - Um...I think it's "Strikes Again". I remember it starts with a VERY Irish Mike Axford. Haven't seen it in a while (and, let's face it, who has a VCR anymore?).

    Thanks, GL68!
    Welcome, Katt.

Oh, and did I mention my Green Hornet and Kato Captain Action figures?

Yeah, I may've forgotten about those...

My thoughts exactly, JP. My older stepdaughter mentioned liking it...but she and her sister also like movies such as "Twilight" and "Stomp The Yard". Imagine my surprise when I found "Stardust" not only "good" but "pretty freakin' good".

    It's a secret shame...
  7. Awe-sum. Did not know about this, so thank you guys for sharing. This is WONDERFUL free publicity, and speaks phenominally of our player base.

And people wonder why my wife and I have played for four years now...

Katt - I RESPECTFULLY disagree with your broad, sweeping comment.

And at the risk of starting something flamey, will end it simply by stating as someone who has one of the two GH serials on video, every episode of the 60's GH TV series recorded from an FX marathon nearly 10 years ago, a complete collection of the entire 1990's GH comics series from Now Comics (every series, every issue), I consider myself both with a modicum of sense AND in the know...AND *I* am looking forward to this movie.

I boycotted 'Catwoman' with Halle Berry. If I can do *that*, I can certainly boycott the 'Green Vomit'.

BRING BACK VAN WILLIAMS! TEAM HIM UP WITH JACKIE CHAN!

    'nuff said, True Believers!

    Excelsior!
Katt hon d'you know how OLD Van Williams is now?

Heck Jackie Chan is no spring chicken either (but he's certainly younger than Van).

I'd probably act a lot like Superman did to Superboy. I didn't mean it as a slight to Kal-El...just more of an observation. It's probably good he wasn't any more freaked out than he showed!

Another thing from what I understand there was copyright/legal issues preventing them bringing in Wonder Girl at the beginning of the story and she will be coming in later.

Thanks for both of those. Yeah I can see Speedy's return as "RA"...and frankly I just don't think it's fair that Superman gets Superboy, Batman gets Robin, but Wonder Woman..the third leg of "The Trinity" gets...the shaft?

Naw. Not fair. But it's nice to see WG will show up at SOME point.

    *EDIT*

Also, in retrospect, I'm not suprised the premier was so good. Greg Weisman, creator of Gargoyles and supervising producer for Spectacular Spider-Man, is one of the Co-Creators. The other is the guy who produced the "Under the Red Hood" animated movie.
I did not know about Weisman's efforts on YJ, but it speaks volumes about how it respected the source material while going in different directions. "Spectactular Spider-Man" was about the best representation of 30 years of Spider-Man stories I've ever seen, but I digress...

I really enjoyed the YJ premiere...and can't wait for the series to start in January. A couple of comments:

    1) It's my understanding Robin has already been identified as Dick Grayson. I liked the "laughing young daredevil" concept injected through his of-screen chuckles, even if they do sound a little Jokerish and creepy.

    2) Comic history has Wally and Dick as best friends. I certainly got that vibe from their interactions here. Nice job, production team.

    3) Had absolutely ZERO problem with Speedy throwing a hissy-fit early on and leaving. He was always the "black sheep" of the superhero set, and while he's redeemed himself on several occasions, the attitude problem certainly fits him. I just hope they bring him back from time to time (yes, I know Arrowette/Artimis is coming instead).

    4) "Why's Batman so...grumpy?" asked the wife.
"Batman's ALWAYS grumpy, honey. It's his thing," said I.
"But he's gonna be giving them missions. He acts like he HATES those kids."
"Told ya, honey. It's his THING."

    5) I don't really know "not-Garth" Aqualad or Miss Martian well enough to comment about them. Aqualad seems to be the "Green Lantern-energy-projector-but-with-water" guy, while Miss Martian, of course, will represent all da ladies in da house. Why couldn't they have just gone with Wonder Girl...either version (Donna or Cassie)?

    6) Introducing Cadmus as "chief big-bad" early on will give at least the first season some focus. Again, good job production team. Plus it was a (fairly natural) way of introducing Superboy. Yes, a little derivative of the "Secret Origins" intro for Justice League, but it still worked. Guardian, Dubblex and Cadmus were all fantastic touches and additions.

    7) Is it me or did Superman kinda act like a deadbeat dad when he was around Superboy? Just a thought, "Jason-from-Superman-Returns"!

    8) Finally, I have some loose theories that connect the the Batman, Superman, Justice League and Teen Titans together with "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths" and the Young Justice series. If you're interested, PM meh and I'll fling my geek all over you.

    9) Have I mentioned I'm looking forward to January?
  16. I offically refused to comment.

    1) I couldn't hear anything
    2) Wow...choppy much? Couldn't see anything distinctly enough to tell if I hated it or not.

At this point, I do not hate what I've seen and am still looking forward to the movie. Please note that I will advise of a change should one come to pass. Thank you for your consideration.
  17. "Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow?"

    R.I.P., Silver Age Superman.

    Megamind

Noone saw Megamind this weekend? Noone commented?

Hmm...I didn't think it was THAT bad! Kinda enjoyed it, actually. If "Soon I Will Be Invincible" had a sense of humor, it'd have been "Megamind".

    Anyone?
  19. Just starting to read this thread, but wanted to chime in.

I've been a superhero fan and comic book nerd for most of my 42 years. No other game I've played gives me the feeling of playing my old PNP superhero RPGs (one now an online game) with the Mego figures I used to collect in my youth. The very ones I used to change costumes, with, alter, redress, while posing them in the Wayne Foundation, Hall of Justice, or Batcave.

Both my wife and I play, she has two accounts to my one, and as soon as we feel $45.00 each month is a waste we'll stop. Hasn't happened yet. I've just introduced one of my older friends to the game for the first time about 4 weeks ago, and one of my other friends I used to work with just called to see if I'd be on today.

Looks like it's time to visit Paragon City. See you there...

  22. Have only seen the micro-eps so far, but I've been pleased overall...but remember I'm mostly a DC Universe guy, so YMMV.

And for the record, I think I'm the only one who's NOT bugged by Iron Man's voice.

  25. Okay, I saw this yesterday. Since I'm uniquely qualified to comment on this, I will.

    "Me no likey."

It's not the shape, per se, though I think it's a little goosenecked for my taste. No, it's too busy. Unneccesarily so. Someone upthread said they liked the oversized prop better than the one for the film...and I have to agree.

So no...don't like the power battery, but that's not going to keep me from seeing the movie.
