Ya... giant monsters can be serious attention hogs.
And the piece is not ment to be about the monster or the heroes but their strugle with it... and the snakes... and the blue... -
Ya, for this one, I was going for the 'God doggie" approach to the head pat. And as for GW's expression, I honestly couldn't think of one that fit her. She has always struck me as being distant (being a ghost assassin and all) and not all together "here" in the here and now. Though, there will be a bit more dimension and what not added to both of their faces... I save that for colors. But the way I see tings is GW just doesn't come off right if she's showing any real expression of emotion... and such didn't seem to fit the duo too well. She seemed like the gall who would absently reward her pet while she plotted and hatched her next scheme which was far to removed from most to understand or fathom for they have not seen the depths of death that she has and treaded... blablabla. I might be wrong though...

Hrm, ya, now that the shoulder thing is pointed out, i can definitly see that! Damn! I'll get on fixing that. Thanks for the input on that one!

Ya, I still don't have a freakin' title for this one *sigh* but I'm sure one will come before it's over.
It's another chapter from that demon Shiver's life and his Angel. This time, they were to be in combat with a giant monster of some verity. This cute lil' guy was eventually selected as the monster for them to fight. When putting it all together, though, I hit a lot of problems. Eventually, I managed to get these pencils whipped out for it.
Soon to come, snakes, transformations, mist, the color blue, and December. Stay tuned! -
Here I have some work for an up coming painting I have started to call Carnivores, depicting Countess Ivy with her patron... um.. hanging out or something.
It took me a good bit of thinking and as well as some time to get up the nerve to try this piece since one of Gills best pieces IMO was his Countess Ivy piece... I feel like I have some serious stiff competition on this piece to make sure it just doesn't fall over dead in comparisons to what has come before. I only hope I manage to pull this one off.
This is the initial pose that was decided on for the piece (which is good as it was my favorite) and ere is the slightly washed out pencils for the piece. There's a lot I got wrong in them and began seeing after the scan, so many corrections to come. -
Seriously, I'm really not a zombie! I didn't die and this is not my flesh hungry corpse typing this out. I'm very much alive, I swear! Just to prove it, I have several updates, one of which is for this piece, Battle Angel: Color 01.05somenumber623Ihavenoidea
There was actually a lot more work that went into getting this far then is evident, but the 22+ hrs wasted on a bad direction and figuring out how to do what I have in my mind digitally isn't really represented well. I'd have to say, it is a lot different from regular painting.
Brandon, for your question, for this piece, I'm using Painter IX and an intous 1 wacom tablet... not much else
And Shia, yup, it's almost all ccg. There is a little bit I did cheat on and that's the texture for the initial background. That is actually a scan from part of an old painting that I will never finish. I'm really digging digital painting, but I find it very difficult t get some of the randomness of traditional paint... something I rely strongly on, especially for backgrounds. For my old oils, I would usually end up throwing turpentine at the canvas and let it do interesting things to the paint to help determine what was going on back there... I needed that for this piece as well. Now, since I felt that not only would throwing turpentine at my screen not have much of an effect on the digital painting, but might wreck havoc on the monitor, I needed to find another way of injecting a touch of unpredictable randomness into things..,. and so... scan!
Um, ya.
Babble over. -
Man, that has to be trippy to run into familiar fictional characters from your old gaming days, I can only imagine. And damn you people with your name dropping! The best I can say about my old gaming group is one of them is a lawyer now... that's... um... something
But, as usual, great work there Doug! I, again, really do dig the background, especially that statue rising up along side of the building... great work!
As for the background / figure problems... I really think it's simply the fact that no red appears anywhere in the background. Next time, maybe make sure you duplicate the main overriding colors of the character somewhere in the background. That will keep the colors from feeling as localized and trick the eye into accepting the figure and the background a lot easier.
Still, fantastic work... though seeing a man more realistically wear a mask like that does make me wonder who well he can aim that bow -
Great work on Plas so far... and you managed to put her in a position where her top pattern in conjunction with her top buckles wouldn't drive you to homicide! Good choice!
Critique wise, while great so far, I'd say your shorting her a touch in her assets. When we pull our legs up to us like she did with the leg closest to the viewer, the heal comes very close to lining up with out back-side (depending how large ones back size is). As it is now, it looks like she has a butt much like my own, skin and bone and not much else. Don't cheat the poor woman and push that butt out a touch and you'll be golden!
Still, great stuff, man! -
Damn... that is a damned good render of Juggs... it kinda freaks me out O_o! I guess that's good, you should be freaked out by some nutter that big. When he's given such a realistic coat of paint, he comes off... as freaky scary! Niiiiiice!

damn, love the perspective on this! I can't wait to see this one done!

*wanders through the thread a bit wide eyed.*
Wow, you people, uh, you people really do go on, doncha?
*desperately tries to shove some posts aside to clear a little bit of room for the latest but modest Battle-Angel update* -
good stuff man! They shoud be quite pleased to recive that *narrows his eyes* or at least that should
-
*claps* very very suppa nice! The corrections you made were spot on and, beyond that, I love what you did with the ax... all those lill' hearts will make that such a pleasant ax to have ones skull split by, ahhhhhhhhh.
Excelent work! -
damned amusing idea there, son... damned amusing
-
Didn't get to see the old one (and was kinda wondering what some people were talking about for manny a post
) but GREAT job here! I imgine it probablky really did fall on it's face without that tilt to the cityscape. Everything looks better when tilted!
Either way, suppa good stufs! -
wow, it came out quite nice! I love the heavy shading you gave to the forground figures to really give them some dimension, good job on that. I also love the subtle texturing you did on the robots left (our right) arm.
I gotta ask too, is the background a screenshot? If so, great job blending it in with your style. If not, wow, suppa great painting job! -
Wow, looking good so far! I love what you have for Life & Death so far. I can tel them guns would have given you some issues, but, all in all, it looks to be shapping up to one nice piece.
One thing that might be bothering you about the hair (which i really like) is possibly that he should have a bit more head maybe? Or just more of them teigs and what not. -
Yay, this is gonna be one of your best... at least it looks that way. But then again, you were probably born to draw this character XD
And, um, ya what Alex said. As for that right hand, that's gonna be tricky. I can see that by her pose, the fingers on that hand would be angled and pointing towards the ax head. However, that also goes completely counter to defining the shape and perspective of the ax handle.
Maybe try spreading the fingers out more (hold a pole in that position and take a look at what your fingers on your right hand are doing. The index will probably be spread furthest away from the others, open the most, each finger gets a bit closer together with a better grip on the handle until the pinky which should be wrapped around it in a way that helps the perspective of the ax handle. If any of that makes any sense... eh, just go hold something.
It's still looking great so far. -
Very very cute, yup. Love the idea too... and Db looks nice and rambuctious, like she just a touch ticked... in a DB kinda way! Good stuff.
-
Hey, looking pretty good so far! And, ya, what Radey said as well.
One other thing you might wanna look at (I don't know if it's too late to change now or not) is the ear placement.
On Ol' Gill, the ear is way too far forwards. It's actually sitting where, if he had sideburns, said sideburn would be. The ear starts right behind the jawbone. Check it out on your own face. So, move that ear a bit back and your be good.
I would say the same for Lush, but possibly not. The sternocleidomastoid muscle (that muscle that attaches to the color bone and goes up to the side of the head making that nice inverted triangle on the neck that everyone is so fond of drawing) connects to the skull right behind the jaw and it a strait pointer to the ear (where it ends, the ear begins). On lush, the sternocleidomastoid muscle ends just behind her ear, so you could probably stand to either bring it forwards or knock the ear back.
Heh, I guess I'm on ears today... still great work and I love the good solid shading it has so far. -
*kicks Starchasm in the head*
Hey, I is all man! I might have a few feminine qualities, and I might be a pretty artist, but at least I'm not a large phobic sweaty g@y guy trapped in a girls body... like someone I know
And, Sayterra, come on, ya promised to keep or plans a secret! After all, she still might have those bolt cutters *looks around nervously*
Seriously, ya, it's definitely not a watercolor. It's a lot closer to my oils... though I think the color might be getting a touch out there... gonna have to pull that back before it's through. It's still got a lot of changes to go through, soon that black outline will not be present. I have to work on the reflected and reflected color on the angel as well as light color, the background is just in it's first stages of development... much more to go there... -
Okay, it's been a while since I tossed a Battle-Angel update up, and I reckon I've done enough to warrant another update. So here's where I'm at currently. It's slowly getting there...

At long last, Heaven and Hell is complete and approved. I would say more, but word type things just ain't working for me tonight. There was stuff, stuff happened, and, eh, I'll post a fallow-up that will say things of more interest or relevance then this bit of babble.
Suffice to say, I believe I am quite pleased with how it came out in the end... and finally no buckling! yes!
Heaven and Hell
I do hope the angel enjoys it
