  1. Some of us who have Alienware computers, in my case an Aurora, are at the mercy currently of the Dell people for video drivers. I have CrossfireX and the video has been good in-game with most of the ultra settings turned on. Water is a problem.

But for upgrading the only ATI/AMD drivers that work with my dual ATI Radeon HD 5670s is 10.7. I have been pushing for Dell to look into it. Any other drivers crash and Blue Screen the computer.
  2. I can exit my game with no trouble now and the Alienware lights are correct and go back to where they should be on exit. And the game doesn't freeze on exit either.

BUT, my 3D sound is gone. I play on a 7.1 system and for some reason my 3D sound line in options says "N/A". It was working pretty good since issue 19 though with the release of Going Rogue it was messed up.

So now I am back to playing with no rear speakers. I have checked all my settings. No 3D sound now in City Of Heroes.

Anyways thanks for fixing the exit freeze. I hope I can get my sound back too eventually.
  3. CruJones. Right click on your COH Icon. Pick Properties at the bottom of the list.

Then pick the tab "Compatibility". You should be able to take it from there.
  4. I am on Win7 and I went into the compatibility section with the startup icon.

Windows XP (Service Pack 3) was check and run as administrator was not...weird.

So I unchecked WXP(SP3) and checked run as adminstrator.

Low and behod, I clicked on the icon and a patch downloaded and applied. I can get in now.

    Weird...C'est La Vie.
  5. You can add me onto this list. I click on any server...get the message...and that is it.

I did a windows update last night and downloaded 11 files. Has anyone else did a Windows Update in the last 24 hours?
  6. Both or you are correct it seems. When I turn the world detail up to 200% that sort of graphic change stops.

The only trouble is I get lag. Though I am runnning on a crossfirex dual platform, my i7 is only 2.67 ghz quad core, eight cpu. My pc is new as of the end of August and it is set-up for overclocking which I have never done and do not want to chance at this time. I understand reading that I can go to 3.2 ghz fairly safely.

I have as of yet to update my ATI drivers and the Dell system ATI drivers are as of May this past year 2010, so that also hinders some of the graphics I am sure. I am not really sure how to go about it for my Alienware system believe it or not. I tried undating a week after I received the pc and I blue screened with the ati.diag command and had to recover. Win7 restore works! I am still sort of in shock.

But as I said, playing with the world detail does fix the problem.

Thank you very much for your replies.
  7. I have noticed the graphics in Going Rogue being not as good as COH/COV. That is little anomalies or tears in the graphics with changing buildings popping in and out, and trees and other scenery doing the same.

    See this video here: http://www.xfire.com/video/3a8a4e/

I also get a very annoying flashing that occurs every so often and it seems as if the shadows are on the blink.

I am on dual ATI Radeon HD 5670 crossfirex enabled cards w/i7 quad core intel. I have tried changing various settings turning say FSAA off and Occlusion on and off and nothing seems to stop it from doing what it does in the video.

It could just be that Going Rogue is not quite ready and still in the development stage for ATI cards.

Any help or input is appreciated.

    Thank you.
  8. Well this is a simple question with a simple answer...the game is darn good!!

I am going on six years coming up soon and have been through a few rough times. I played six months on a relatives account to level 25 when it was released then bought my own account.

City Of Heroes is the first MMO game to win the E3 best mulitplayer online game. The 2nd MMO recently to win is Star Wars The Old Republic which is due for release in 2011. That is a good background.

The engine is different, the play is diffferent. I have played a few MMOs and I still believe this to be the best 'teaming' experience in any game I play.

When you like something and it treats you right, though there have been a few problems for me throughout my COH time, you stick with it right?

You can log in for maybe a few mintues and do one solo mission if you want that is not fairly too involved. OR you can go headlong into a task force, strike force or team if you have the time. In World Of Warcraft some of the quests can be involved and take you much longer than you thought, not to mention the lengths of the dungeons and flying time. In COH there is no hurrying.

And the world is becoming bigger. With the release of Going Rogue it is a start. My push is for an expansion every 2 to 3 years. COV was 2 years if I remember right.

Your characters are always there, and there is the costume creator which is still one of the best engines of that type to play around with online.

Due to some recent trouble I have had with other PlayNC soft games I will probably not subscribe this summer of 2011. It will be my first time. I have even taken alot of time off with WOW.

And most importantly, the people are nice. I do not think I have ever heard an 'F' word mentioned in any area broadcast channel or in any teaming I have ever done! I am serious.
As a matter of fact I do not think I have heard any serious slang usage at all in all the time I have played!

The community is probably the best I have been involved with. So my hats off to ya if you love the game as much as me. :-D

Has anyone else noticed the graphics getting better or is it just me?

I wish we could get a dev to comment on this, since it's now happening to at least a dozen board-goers, so probably 50-100 players who don't come and post about it and the forum guys are still stumped.

I'm on XP with an ATI card too btw, but the standard XP Blue theme.
With me it started with the release Going Rogue. After Going Rogue was installed it started to lock up on me.

I am on Win7, 64-bit, the gamers adopted software, and a brand new Alienware computer, well as of the end of August. Dual Videos - ATI. And yes I do have the Alienware effects on. I have tried it with the Alienware effects both on and off and it still locks up.

I would say it is a 64-Bit issue but it seems some people with XP have the same lock-up so that is out.

It would be nice if a solution was found. In my Q&A book I label this a "serious" problem but with the game playable. When the software does not work correctly to me that is serious.
  10. I am still having the same issue as well. I had the game one time about two weeks ago exit normally and for the life of me I wish I knew what happened.

Just to repost, I click 'exit now', the screen freezes, I go into start task manager hitting 'ctrl, alt, and delete' and the city of heroes crash box is up along with the task manager. I then click 'exi't on the crash box to close the game.

Just as a note...nice job on getting the water working better. I am on medium quality and have no character graphic shadow around my toon in the water now. Us ATI people have been having a rough time since the release of Going Rogue and this improvement is a big plus.

My video is (2) Radeon HD 5670 GPU enabled (Ultra Settings). and I have noticed the lack of dotted lines which I am extremely happy about.

The only major video problem I still have is things popping up when moving. In other words, building changing slight shape, popping up, trees suddenly appearing. This is on 100% distance. I have played with the occlusion and the FSAA (which works good now for me, ATI) and nothing seems to fix it. I understand that Physx technology is still strongly supported by the game and I think for ATI cards the problem lies there.

The game still needs some tweaking for us ATI/AMD video card people. The building reflections are screwy

One other note, the game needs better sword play animations. Laters.
  11. Also just to add the Creative Console Launcher is still in its beta from the Creative people.

For those of you familiar with the X-Fi cound cards and their software, the Creative Console Launcher had 3 modes in which you could switch to. Entertainment, Audo Creation (which gave you tons of tweak buttons), and gaming mode.

On my XP system I used to keep in gaming mode all the time and switch to entertainment for music, movies, and what-not.

Now with my Win7 64 bit X-Fi card I just get the Entertainment mode in the Creative Console Launcher and that is all. I would guess that is what Alchemy is suppose to replace. Alchemy actually to me seems to do nothing.

Lets hope this gets fixed. COH was one of my favorites for its sound.

I was caught between computers thinking I just had to upgrade my sound. It is ok though because I am used to X-Fi over what my new pc has, 7.1 Realtek on-board sound. I would have eventually upgraded anyway.

I get a sort of 3d sound when I run COH in Windows XP service pack 3 or 2, but it is not the sound I am used to out of my other card directionally. It is more of a headphone 3d sound.

And with doing this two things happen. I am on an Alienware computer and the game supports AlienFx, that is the colors change on the keyboard, mouse, and computer when you are a hero (white), praetorian, (light blue), and villian (red). The colors do not change and freeze randomly while in XP service pack 3 or 2. AND my game always crashes when I go to exit, which I see has happened to others as I have read above.

It needs a real fix and a message that pops up for us when it does get fixed.

Its ironic just how many hard-core gamers have adopted Win 7 64-bit as their gaming OS and how many games currently do not run on it correctly the way they should.
  12. I have recently bought a new computer and all of the slots are PCIE. On my older computer I had PCI slots, not PCIE and I used to get the 3d Sound - Enabled..

I installed a PCIE x1 X-Fi Extreme Audio Sound card and I do not get the 3d sound in City Of Heroes. On my old computer with the Xtreme game X-fi card I would get the 3d sound, this new one, which is supposed to be better with "PCIE" it does not work. Why?

Under the options menu for graphics and audio the 3d Sound is greyed and says "N/A". I have checked and double checked everything I am supposed to. I also ran the verify files button on the COH launcher. It just will not run.

    Any help is appreciated.

    I am on a Win 7 64 bit system.
The card is Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Audio "PCIE" card.
    Speakers - Creative 8 speakers, 7.1 sound.
  13. I am on a new Alienware pc and I wanted to thank you guys for the Alien FX effects. The Praetorian color changes my compute tot he aqua, the hero color (white) changes my pc, and the red, which is my default. Pretty neat. :-D
  14. My download speed is currently...sec...125 kb/s. Yeah it is up from the 74.4 kb/s it was an hour a go.

Dude, my time says 6:28.03, When it started patching the file it is still patching, Sound.pigg, my download time was 167453:28.03. It was like that for about an hour. :-O I finally has the time and number moving again. *bleep* knows how long it will stay that way.

    I am on cable btw.

  16. This is alittle confusing because when the limit is reached on each server you end up say in Atlas Park 2, Atlas Park 3. The most I have seen on "Freedom" is Atlas Park 25 and I have been with the game since its launch.

...Depending on where you installed it of course.
Sorry to post again twice in a row.

    What does this command do?

Is it like the Guild Wars command where you can just download everything at one time?
  18. You think you have problems. When it gets to fixing my sound.pigg file it takes about 3 hours. Then the rest of the download that I have been doing now for 2 1/2 hours. I don't think I will be playing tonight...lol!

This is terrible for me because I "have" been having sound trouble in my other games. So is it my pc or the game. :-O

Currently I am at 27.7 kb/s which is better than it has been is was 0/kb while doing the sound.pigg file.

I started at 217 kb/s, it went up to 330 kb/s then dropped off to 0 with the sound.pigg file. Maybe by tomorrow night I may have a game. Lord knows what working order it will be in.

    It is 34.5 kb/s now.

On Steam I am used to 1.2 "mb"/s. This is horrible.

It seems to freeze, the time and the kb/s when doing the sound.pigg file.

    I am SOL I guess. :-(

Maybe that is why they released it early. Download trouble.
  19. BillZ, with your initial settings, can you tell me why you have the character detail set to 200%?

And also why you have the CCC verical sync to 'always on' and the in-game vertical sync 'disabled'. I would think it would be the other way around.

Pertaining to my issue with the shaders and the newer settings and my lack of shadows.

When I change my shader setting from 'stencil' to 'shadowmaps' with the next slider on the 'lowest setting' the game is unplayable/lags horribly and everything has a moving shadow attached to it.

What I didn't mention is that my shader quality setting locks on 'high'. Is that supposed to happen with the shadowmaps setting?

If I can get that unlocked and am able to put it on 'low' (with world bumpmaps) which was my initial setting with the older graphics settings, that may be my solution to having no shadows. I am guessing it would give me less of them which should not lag me up.

I have notice playing around with 'low' (with world bumpmaps) and the 'high' setting under shader quality there is quite a difference in game. For instance the signs in the deteriorating arena area where you level up are not lite up in the 'high' mode but are lite up in the 'low' (with world bumpmaps) setting. There is also a big difference in the archnos base maps.

Anyway my main question with this is does the shader quality setting lock on 'high' when the slider is moved to 'shadowmaps' or is it my drivers?

And really.. that's it. I was able to turn some Ultra mode item on with my old X800XT in my workstation, but performance took a dirt nap. There's a lot of threads floating around discussing what cards can handle what, and I'll try to consolidate some of that info in the new post.
With my Visiontek ATI Radeon x1550 (PCI) (not PCIE) as I said above the shaders are the only thing that is trouble. When I had shadows enabled with the old graphic engine, I would get the shadows, but occassionally I would get spikes along the shadow edges. (Something I found associated with green, as in green grass). Now with this new engine, the default is the stencil, and shadowmap mode, low setting, is unplayable, laggy, as if FSAA was all the way up. (I leave FSAA off btw). The current drivers for the older x1xxx series at the ATI/AMD site is the 10.2 legacy drivers FYI. Reading these posts it seems as if everyone else has the 10.4. I do not know if that would make a difference but it might.

The graphics are nice and sharp with limited dotted edge lines but the downside with no object shadowing, well it looks sort of dingy and as if it going to rain at times.

I can put the water and reflection up a notch for the ultra taking little lag that is noticeable.

About the object shadows I am not really sure anything can be done without changing the engine. I believe some of us may be SOL.
  21. These settings will have to be updated since the release of issue 17.

Card: Visiontek ATI Radeon x1550 PCI Card (Note: PCI) Drivers Latest as of this date: 10.2 legacy, OS: XP, 3.2 ghz, supports 3.0 shaders.

The problems for me with the new graphics in issue 17 is of course the shaders.

With the new shader settings defaulting to shadow stencil for me I have lost all shading in the game.

I am referring to the daytime and nightime lighting where the shadows of the trees, building, etc move across the ground as the sun and moon set and rise. Object shading.

I have tried changing the new settings to shadow maps and the lowest setting allowed and the lag is so bad it is unplayable. It enables that type of shading and more but runs poorly on my system. Unplayable.

One thing in that setting there is more shading that I notice now. For instance, the tram car rails now show as moving shadows on the ground and the substation towers also show shadows on the ground.

But I can only use the shadow stencil.

With this in mind I of course do not like the newer graphic engine changes for that very reason of losing my object shading. Unless it can be adjusted somehow.

It is a shame we can not go back to the older graphics set-up if we wanted.
  22. Wouldn't it be easier just to say, "From Agent G go right outside through the double doors then go right and go into the Archnos base, look for a bright red tunnel". This is a hard way because of the guns and level of the Archnos but I would think it would be the fastest way.

Also the quest should mention the word 'tunnels'. That would give the player a better idea on what to look for.

    Poor wording for a mission.
