  1. I personally just cant believe that after all the time i've been gone, EA hasnt gotten any love, and if this is all the love it gets I might retire Lysarien permanently.

We need to have Brutes/Tanks without holds in PvP... The job of a Brute/Tank is not holding opponents, that's the job of Def/Cont/Corr/Doms... Brutes/Tanks have no business having holds from single hit attack powers.

/Agree. Melee is way too powerful. They keep whaling on me while i try to snipe, and i can't hit them through their defenses! Nerf melee!
  3. Castle, you do realize that even with those powers nerfed into oblivion (i'm talking Psi Shockwave dealing 10 base damage even) /psi will be horribly overpowered, right?
  4. That's what being a villain is all about. Using things that could be good, for evil. Not neccesarily using things that can only be evil for that purpose, but *choosing* to use things for evil.
  5. Rolling a Sonic/Psi and saying lol to PvE the second I12 hits.

And people didnt think Psi would be overpowered in PvE...
  6. Try Red Lizard. It gives you superspeeeed!

Standing a petite 5'4", The Magnificent Gila Girl is an awe inspiring sight--to those that can see her move! Faster than a speeding Komodo Dragon, as well as a Forumula 1 racer, the light blue skinned (and scaled!) diva-of-a-hero takes to the streets daily, policing both the thugs and fashion blunders. Her eyes, the same bright orange as her hair, seem to stare into the distance with a distinct confidence, while her smile shows a warm, caring soul. She is constantly in conflict with her own personal, literal beast, a creature residing in her mind, affecting her descisions, and sometimes her actions. WHile she has managed to control this evil inclination, she often will display certain "unnatural" qualities; absent mindedness and a tendency to show off are common occurances with her.

  8. May as well give ti a try.

It was on one of these occasions, where she "overdid it." In the middle of a dazzling display of acrobatics on the Atlas Statue, Gila lost her concentration, and fell to what could have been her death...then again, it probably would have meant a few minor bruises. It was only a hundred feet, after all. While falling, however, she noticed a group of Vazhilok zombies stumbling slowly toward the First national bank. A quick mid-air redirection put her body facing the potential bombers, and a sonic blast easily did the hooligans in...along with a couple of cars. However, the public cheered, and Gila could only blush, smile and wave, as the day was...saved?...yet again by the Fastest Lizard Alive.
  9. WOuld love to have a pic of Gila Girl sig link, there's several screens there. The Classic outfit is the one I envision her most in, and the one with the full-on screen xD

She's a Sonic/EM Blaster. Three words? Fastes Lizard Alive.

RP Level: Heavy RP SG Chat is always IC, we have a global for OOC chat.

Theme/Concept: Arachnos The Wraith Spiders are the elite Arachnos unit dedicated to serving and protecting Ghost Widow.

Activity: Very Active out of our 70 current characters on the roster, 50+ are different players, and around 25 are consistantly active. We usually see anywhere from 10-15 people on on weekends, while during the week we usually see 7 or 8.

We mostly play EST/EDT, but have several players in other timezones.

Requirements for Membership: None, so long as your character serves/wants to serve Arachnos and Ghost Widow We are a military-styled SG, and saluting/respecting officers and commanders is required. While some backtalk is fine (and at times, encouraged), too much may get your character in trouble, and possibly kicked from the VG. This is NOT, however, an OOC issue, and you will not be removed from the global, nor the site, nor anything. If one of your chars is kicked, you are still free to retconn the actions that caused the kick (or write them off however you want), or bring a different char into the SG. We *never* take IC concerns OOC.

It was heavily damaged in Nightfall, which added an ungodly amount of button-mashing trash builds

    [/ QUOTE ]

Amen. One reason i retired. AI ran a 5/3 split build, with an Axe war, Cripshot ranger (me) and E/mo Air flagger on split, and a pressure/mini-spike when together. You can't tell me that doesn't take skill.

Especially as a Ranger. You can't tell me interrupting doesnt take skill. Yea, a quick trigger finger helps, but memorizing opposing casters' patterns, watching two or three at once, and keeping track of what's distracted is *not* easy.

Nightfal did ruin much oft he PvP, though. EViL quitting didn't help much either. Pre-Nightfall, though, the top25-50 depending on season/balances was always competitive.

I DO have to agree that PvP templates wouldnt work in CoX, though. While you bring up a good point, Facepunch, from what i've seen/experienced in CoX, I don'tt hink it's viable. The game's a PvE one, with PvP tacked on. Doesn't seem balanced enough to warrant PvP templates. Balance should come first.

  13. [ QUOTE ]
kills/runes/insigs is 90% of any encounter, skill is all in the build make up

youve also aparently never competed at the top teir of GvG or HoH, its always a battle between 2 or 3 big guilds (like the speamen in the summer of 05, they dominated HoH for a few months), sure people sit around RA/AB all day but it isnt PvP, thats an exaggerated place to test builds

    [/ QUOTE ]

NOTE: this is Gila's brother, posting because she mentioned the GW comments to me.

I've competed in top level GvG since beta (E3 2004 specifically). Everythign you've said is wrong.

For starters, build makeup is only *half* the battle. The other half is team strategy, execution, timing, energy management, and playing tot he map. There are no exceptions tot his, not even gimmick builds like the tripsmites, Searing Flames's, and spike builds of olde. Hell, even IWAY took *some* skill.

Added tot hat is individual player skill. Ask a top level ranger if playing the class (barring thumpers) is easy. Ask a top level monk the same question. Same for any class. Skill>build makeup, barring exploits.

Secondly, HoH is not top-level pvP by any means. Top level is top25-50 depending on the season/balance changes.

Third, youre both wrong; the Faction system is IMO *better* than playingn the PvE game. Saved templates, balanced weapons, etc. Sure, way back before these changes, PvP chars were gimped, and pvEing was the onyl way to go, but not now.

Fourth, 2 or 3 big guilds? Try ~15 consistantly, not counting surprises (and by surprises i mean both gimmick guilds and baalnced/pressure guilds). War Machine, EViL (till fairly recently, at least), Te, (not sure who the current tops are; retired a few months ago; damn Anet never buffing my preorder weapon :cry, those are only the *consistant* winners. Guilds come and go. The top players PuG with each other often enough that top guilds seem to sprign forth out of nowhere, when they are inf act just older guilds revived/new guilds with the same players.

    get your facts straight.

~~Stealthrider, Apathy Inc. Ranger (retired June 2007)
  14. Why isn't "Defense is useless" up there? I see exactly no mention of the single worst imbalance out of all the ATs/Powersets. Honestly, there is no way anyone can honestly say that ToHit vs Defense is balanced. Especially with the ridiculous amount of ToHit buffs players get (not even mentioning the ones NPCs get), there is NO reason for "Fix Defense/ToHit" not to be the number one priority.

This imbalance makes /Energy Aura, /Super Reflexes, /Ninjutsu, Ice/ (to a lesser extent, what with the insane amount of utility Ice gets), and any set relying on Defense virtually useless in PvP. Buildup, Aim, Rage, Focussed Accuracy, Geas of the Kind Ones, all of these completely negate Defense sets, and for a set like /Energy Aura, that relies completely on it's Defense (another problem entirely), it is virtually the same as the player becoming an AV for 10 seconds or more. The only way these sets survive are through their Tier9s, which double-stacked Rage (easily achievable), Buildup+AIm, or Geas can easily get through.

    Fix Defense/ToHit first.

I wonder, though, why no info on the passive +resistance powers?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Perhaps this will answer your question.

    [ QUOTE ]
You'll notice I did not mention the two passives, Dampening Field and Energy Protection. Frankly, that's because theyre nigh useless. 12% slotted resistance to only four types of damage is not worth the power slots. Only reason to take these is for IO slotting.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    UPDATE:

Another, slightly cheaper build for the middle-class Max Defensers. Slightly less Psi defense, but a strogner Gloom and of course, cheaper.

NOTE: This build is proven to do just fine in Warburg and casual Arena PvP. Rv has too much Focus Accuracy, and Sirens=no overload (though tis viable). Warbrug is a nice balance.

  18. If PB boosted the -res in Sonic attacks, Sonic blasters would be able to stack -100% resistance easily. If that doesnt sound unbalanced, think of it this way: you *and* your team are doing double damage to that target for as long as the blaster can maintain their attack chain (and with SOnic's low end costs, thats a *very* long time.) It would mean that AV's resists could be shattered, as with the stacking power of Sonic/, it isnt hard to maintain a constant 30%+ res debuff *now*, let alone with double the debuff length.
  19. Welcome. This, my friends, is the one and only (so far, at elast) guide to playing probably the most underpowered Brute possible. It's almost suicide to play this combination, and I wouldn't have ti any other way. (Unless of course, they fixed Fire/ and /Energy...)

I will caution you, however, that if you consider thinking about trying a Fire/Energy Brute, be warned that unless you have the SMASHing experience, the Infamy, and the raw guts, you won't get far.

If you have all of the above, however, a Fire/Energy Brute can be the most fun of all the Brute sets. It's just a bit masochistic.

So, without further ado, here it is

    THE MASOCHIST'S FIRE/ENERGY BRUTE GUIDE!
    or
How I learned to stop worrying and love Defense

    First off,

    Why Fire Melee?

Why not? Fire has okay damage, a riddiculously fast recharging PBAoE, and a giant flaming sword of death. ...That's pretty much it. Paired with /Fire, it's damage is significantly better, though still not spectacular. Why then, would you take it over, say, SS? Aside from the great endurance efficiency of course.

For this playstyle, the big answer is Fire Sword Circle. It's small radius (10ft compared to Foot Stomp's 15) and high damage make ti an efficient killing tool...so long as the badguys stay close. Why does this help us? Well, with Energy Cloak, you'll be able to strike small groups, without risk of agroing others nearby. A Fire/EA Brute has no trouble in the infamous Rooms of Death for this reason.

Now that that's taken care of,

    Why Energy Aura?

    Good question. Moving on...

Seriously, though, Energy Aura is a very versatile set IO-wise, and is the only Defense option for a Brute secondary. That said, it also has far too many holes for many peoples likings, and it only truly shines later on in the game (where it consequently has the most holes...)

Let's look at what Energy Aura has to offer:

-Moderately high defenses to Smashing, Lethal, Fire, Cold damage
    -High defense to Energy
    -Extremely efficient Endurance management tools
-Possibly the strongest Tier9 in the game
-Possibly the strongest mez protection in the game

    Unfortunately, it also has

-No defense to Psi (or Toxic)
    -Mediocre defense to negative Energy
    -No self heal
    -No taunt aura/damage aura

You need to decide if the pros outweigh the cons. Personally I think they don't, but I went and made several /EAs anyway, including my Fire/EA, which has since become my Villain main and most fun character.

So, let's get into the actual guide. First i'll go over

    Fire Melee

    Scorch
Ah, Scorch. Craptastic attack, really. Recharge is meh, Damage is awful, animation takes forever. Still, it's a half-decent FUry building tool, and one I have to reccommend over Fire Sword, the other elvel 1 option.

Slotting: 1 Acc. Even masochists arent that desperate.

    Fire Sword

I hate this attack. Slow, okay damage, slow recharge. I took it, and loved it early on, but as I advanced in levels i found ti was far too slow to be useful as a Fury building tool, and did too little damage to fit into my chain.

If you do take it, slot it 1-2 Acc, 3 Damage, 1 rech if you can spare the slots (you probably can't). Otherwise, 1 acc, 3 damage, or just 1-2 acc if youre suicidal enough to use it to build Fury.

    Cremate

Mmmmmmmm, Cremate. You. Will. Take. This. Power. The first of your SMASHtastic attacks, Cremate is a staple of your attack chain, and it will never, ever leave your bar. Ever.

Slot 1-2 Acc, 3 Dam. 1 rech if you can spare it.

    Build Up

You'll want this hefty damage boost, but unfortunately, you may not be able to fit it in right away. (I had to wait till the 40s with my specific IO build, but that was post-respec). This will help your damage in ways you can only hope to comprehend.

Slot it 2-3 Recharge (2 level 50 Ios works fine, otherwise 3 SOs/IOs)

    Incinerate

It doesn't SMASH . Still, it's your second strongest attack, as it's DoT is somethign to eb afraid of. In pvP (if you PvP a Fire/EA, youre more masochistic than me, but go ahead) it's a monster, as no one ever expects the DoT, nor do they ever realize what hit them. Get it. Slot it. Love it. Buy it chocolates. Propose to it. Just don't divorce it.

Slot this 1-2 Acc, 3 dam (1 rech if you can spare.)

    Taunt

Get it if you want it. It'll help with your agro control, but I don't think you'll have the power choices left to pick it up.

Slot 1 Tant duration, if you PvP 2 Acc.

    Breath of Fire

Worst. Attack. Ever. If you take this, i will pay William Hung to follow you around, singing his rendition of "Uncle F*er" fromt he South Park movie. It's that bad. 3 secodn animation (that roots you), a pitiful two ticks of damage, and the Smallest Cone Ever. Don't take it.

    Slotting: No. Just no.

    Fire Sword Circle

You've sat through 26 painful levels to get this, enjoy it. It has a mediocre radius, but great damage and an almost insane recharge for a PBAoE. It's also fairly end-light, compared to ay, Foot Stomp. take it at 26.

Slot it 2 Acc, 3 Dam, 1 rech. You can spare the slots.

    Greater Fire Sword

It's a big sword. A very big sword. it hurts. This attack is your level 32 power, and you'll take it at level 32. It is the strongest attack you have, and it'll serve you well throughout the next 18 levels and beyond.

2 acc, 3 dam, 1 rech, and you can definitely spare the slots.

    Now, on to

    Energy Aura

    Kinetic Shield

Your first defense power, and you have to take it. It's a mere 2% Energy Defense, but nice S/L defense. Keep ti on at all times.

Slot it 3 Def, maybe 1 end redux.

    Power SHield

Your energy, eng energy, and elemental shield. Its great Energy defense, meh neg energy, and great fire/cold. You'll need ti, but not right away. Take it before 26, though. The teens is a good option.

    Entropy SHield

Your mez protection. Full coverage against everythign but Fear and Confuse. Yes, even TP Foe and Repel are nothign against you. Probably the best mez protection toggle available.

    1 End.

    Energy CLoak

You will take this power. This is why you made a Fire/EA. Its 6% (slotted)defense to all, and its stealth does not surpress. Love it. LOVE IT I SAY!

    3 Def, 1 end

    Energy Drain

Take this power at 28. This is your unlimited ENdurance pool. You'll drain a decent amount from your foes, and you'll get a huge amount back. With 3 end mods, one mob will take you to 3/4 from nothing, and two will put you at full (that'd happen with only 2 endmods)

Slot it 3 rech, 1-3 end mod (i always go 3)

    Conserve Power

Up 90sec, down a lot longer. Useful, but not required, this will make you think about why you ever had endurance problems, ever.

    3 rech.

    Overload

The Big Papi. The Ultimate. The Best Damn Tier9 Period. Overload will make you go "WOW" soon as you pop it the first time, and every time after that.

This guy will cap your defenses to all types (but Psi and Toxic), give you insane End recovery, and best of all, it'll add a huge boost to your max health, bringing you extraordinarily clsoe to the Brute health cap (seriously. With Accolades, youll be a mere 14% from the cap, which Ios can rectify easily.)

You will slot this 3rech/3 health, or 3 def/rech+3heal/rech IOs.

You'll notice I did not mention the two passives, Dampening Field and Energy Protection. Frankly, that's because theyre nigh useless. 12% slotted resistance to only four types of damage is not worth the power slots. Only reason to take these is for IO slotting.

    Pools

You'll want the Fighting pool for Weave, and for Tough to stick a Steadfast protection: Res/Def IO in. That IO is mandatory, so thankfully it isn't too expensive. Get one ASAP.

Boxing/Kick will fill out your Fury building chain nicely. I usually chain Scorch-Kick-Brawl for fast Fury, and repeat as neccesary. Then comes Cremate, Incinerate, Fire Sword Circle and GFS, and by that time, not much is standing, if anything.

Slot Boxing/Kick as a normal attack (or 1-2 Acc for a FUry uilder), slot Tough with just the Steadfast, and slot Weave 3 Def/1 end.

Hasten is useful, and if you can, i'd definitely suggest getting it (and slottign it for 3 Recharges)

Aid Self is riddiculously useful. You'll want it. I would suggest getting it sometme in the teens or early 20s, as later on there are too many great powers to pick.

Slot it 3 Heal, 2 Int, 1 Rech. Your defense will mean you dont need it too often, but when you do, you'll want it getting off, and healing a lot.

Combat Jumping will help your defense a bit, but is most useful for slotting a LoTG 7.5% Recharge IO if you can get one, or slotting a Stealth IO if you really dont want one in Sprint.

Leadership will also help your defense, but i'd recomend it only as a last resort.

Stamina and Health are both extremely sueful, and i reccomend getting them by 20.

The other pools arent all that useful to a Fire/EA, though Air Superiority is a great mitigator if you can fit it in.

Now I'll discuss the basic playstyles of the Fire/EA Brute. Be afraid.

    Tactic #1: Flash Fry

You'll be using this throughout your career, so listen up. This tactic involves stealthign up to the toughest of a group, and hitting him with your Fuiry chain, while the little guys wail on you. WHen your Fury is at a decent level, let em have it! Cremate, incinerate, and Fire Sword Circle will take out that boss and make his minions cake. Greater Fire Sword if you really want some overkill, or if that boss just won't die. Before finishing the minions, make sure to Energy Drain so youre fresh for the enxt fight.

Tactic #2: Hot Tomale For You

This is a ton of fun. Walk up to a minion on the outskirts of a group (far enough that he wont agro the rest), and build Fury on him. Next, run into the group and hit Fire Sword Circle, then Greater Fire Sword on the toughest baddy there. Wail on that guy, and when FSC is up again, everythign around you will be dead. And it will look awesome.

    Tactic#3: Somebody Order a Pie?

RUn into a huge group, pop Overload, hit FSC, and agro everythign you possibly can. Hit FSC every time its up till everythign around you is dead. Watch as the baddies' corpses make a pie formation around you. Make sure you take a mental screenshot of the firey goodness. (works best in a high-recharge build)

tactic #4: The Room of Un-Death

The best aprt about being a Fire/EA is soloing Invincible 8-man ROoms of Death. Yea, it's doable, and easy. With most mobs, you won't even need Overload, but it does make thigns go smoother. The tactic? RUn in, while the rest of your team stays back. Agro group 1, finish em off easily without agroign the enarby group 2. Rinse and repeat.

    And now,

    Some IO Build Suggestions

You have your Fire/EA. You have Infamy. You're ready to IO out. The question is...how?

    You have a few options:

    Option 1

Max out your Defenses. Cheap and easy, this is what I reccommend for those of us living the middle-class life in the City Of. You'll want a few Kinetic Combats in your attacks (4 slotted) for Smashing resists, and one or two Pounding SLugfest/Pulverizing FIsticuffs combos for Energy/neg defense (3 slotted each).

For your Defense toggles (all 4 of them) Youll want to use parts of different sets to maximize their benifit. I use 2 Kismets and two gift of the Ancients for the +Recovery bonus.

You'll want to take and 3 slot both Passives, preferably late in the game. SLot them with Impervium Armors (the most expensive part of the build), as well as slottign Tough the same way (4 slot it, you'll still want the Steadfast IO).

Fire Sword Circle doesnt matter. I was lucky enough to get Scirroco's Dervishes, but your mileage may vary.

Everything else slot as you normally would, thoguh you may want to take your Patron Immobilize to 4-slot Enfeebled Operation for the Lethal defense bonus.

    Option 2

Staminaless. Pretty much the same as above, though you'll be getting as much +recovery as possible, most likely Hasten, and Conserve Power is a must. With Energy Drain, the +recovery, Overload and Conserve Power, youll be fine without Stamina, though its probably best to respec to this later on in your Brute's life.

    Option 3

Max Recharge. Arguably the strongest PvE Brute (maybe even pvP) is an /EA with Overload up as often as possible. That Max health really is powerful.

This is also the msot expensive build I can think of, and will require hundreds of millions of Infamy. I plan on respeccing to this eventually, though, as it's worth the cost.

You'll want Red Fortunes in your defense toggles, and Crushing Impacts in your attacks. LoTGs wherever you can put them. Hasten is a must. The rest is pretty self explanitory, eg slot Decimation in your Patron ranged power. You want the most possible +recharge. Youre not sacrificng much to get it.

This build is probably the strongest possible for an /EA, maybe even for a Brute in general. I definitely reccomend working towards it as a final goal. You could take a Fire/EA into RV without worry with this build (and a Stealth IO in Sprint).

So, there you have it. As a final note i'l post my current build (though i'm not quite 50 yet. Any day now...heh)

And this is the build I plan on respeccing to (eventually -_-). its a Max Recharge build, that has Overload recharging in 296.2 seconds, with a downtime of 110 seconds. Not bad, I say.

  20. You dont want to use the Sonic cones for damage. Hell, two of them you generally don't want at all. SOnic is a single target set. Howl is meh, Shockwave is meh-er, Sirens Song isnt a damage skill, and already has more than enough range(so does Howl, for that matter). If you ever play a Sonic build and take Shockwave, i will personally come to your house and drop a barrel of fish on your head. If you take Shockwave *and* howl, I pity you.
  21. ...

You can't be serious. I just read this entire thread, and didnt see the single most obvious single/dual/small/large/whatever blade using character in comics.

    BLADE.
  22. For the record, add 125 to all of the titles in the last list in this thread to get their current numbers (as of I10 that is)
