I have a HUGE problem with that.

I underlined the important bit. The fact is, by the time a game is ready for an Open Beta, what the developers need is a stress test and more raw data. The example I have used before is Planetside. Sure, the developers, in house, could test a 32 person fight very easily... but could they actually test 600 people, 200 per each side, each with different connection speeds, each doing something different in the game? No. Could they get that sort of raw data with a closed beta? Probably. An open beta, however, will get a massive influx of players in.

What I've been over before though is that the perception of beta's has changed in the eyes of many gamers. Many users approach an open-beta as though the software was feature-complete, and do not take the time, or make an effort, to actually test the software existing software, instead focusing on the new hotness feature that's been tested to death. In the case of City of Heroes, massive bugs, such as the towers at the end of the Statesman's Task Force, and the Archvillains using Reichsman values instead of AV values, have slipped through because nobody in an Open Beta wanted to test the existing content.

The fact is, Open Beta's generally don't provide useful feedback from the playerbase. They do, however, provide useful data feedback to developers tracking the numbers as those numbers are created.

There is also the matter, and I believe this has been directly stated by the Paragon Studios staff, that players who actually participate in beta testing, meaning they file bug reports, go looking for issues, ask what to test, get involved with making documented reports on the forums... these are the players who accounts will be flagged for inclusion in future beta events.

Players who simply join open beta, log a bunch of time in the game playing, but don't actually make any kind of bug report or effort to communicate what they experienced, won't get noticed for inclusion in future beta events.
The squeakiest wheel gets the grease. And yes, I know that saying doesn't completely apply here, but I like to use a tired cliche at least once a day.

They spoof the address and try to fool you into using their fraudlent link, that points to a page that looks like an Aion account page so you'll log into it and give them your account info.

The printed link https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/plaync_login.pl is probably hyperlinked to something completely different.

    Demonstration:

    https: //secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/plaync_login.pl

If you don't pay attention to the actual page your browser is sent to, you're at risk. It's very sneaky.
That's absolutely right. I've gotten these emails in the past, and if you mouse over the link provided in the email, most browsers will show you the destination at the bottom of the window. In the emails I've gotten, the link actually goes to something like www.nc-softe.net(not a valid website, don't worry), or something similar that you might not catch at a casual glance.

I think the point is to pay attention to the repeated warnings that practically every MMO gives you. Real admins WON'T ever ask for your account info. They already have all of it in their database.

    So there's a US/EU divide, and in both areas, a red/blue divide.

The individual servers don't have their own separate economies.
Oh, DUH. I had absolutely no idea. It's not something that's really that obvious, aside from the frequency of purchases in the sale history of items. I guess I just assumed that the auctions were server-specific.

Simple. They are testing I17's In-Game E-Mail Attachment Feature. They need a 2nd server to make SURE that you can access your attachments across all servers.

They did the same thing when they were first testing the Consignment House, and again when first testing Character Transfers.
Yeah, that makes sense. I missed the part where you could mail items across servers, though. But it seems like that would throw off server economies, I would think.
  9. So... interesting stuff since the training room patch today. As soon as the login screen appears, it prompts you about Ultra Mode and asks if you want to use the new settings. Additionally, there are TWO training rooms on the server selection menu. I wonder what features they could be testing, or if they plan on significantly increasing the number of testers and/or starting open beta soon.

    I believe Diggis is correct.

Closed beta may, at the moment, not be open to people mentioned on the list there, but this thread has only ever been about clarification (a the risk of being redundant).
I remember a red post a while back that I17 is NOT GR. I've also heard it repeated many, many times on these boards over the past week, so I really don't know what you're trying to accomplish here. The reason that people seem to be ganging up on you is because you're being overly defensive. Just wait a while. You'll get the new shinies eventually.

Therefore, I'm grateful every time I'm able to continue to run new issues on the test server.

Btw, Coh still runs fine on my unsupported mac. So GMA950 Graphics users REJOICE!
Assuming this is true, you just cost yourself a spot in closed beta. Good job!

    Oops.

    "Alien"
I can't tell if you're trolling or not. I think it's pretty clear to anyone with half a brain cell that I17 is NOT GR. Hell, it's coming out three months before the expansion. Obviously the beta for GR is going to be an entirely different thing. A few months ago, I remember a dev(Babs or Castle, can't remember) explicitly stating that I17 isn't GR.

But yeah, I17 closed beta is here and you aren't in it. Boo hoo. Wait a while and open beta will come, or you might even get invited in a week or two. It shouldn't be too long.
  13. I could see this coming a month ago. I17 =/= GR. Stop thinking you have some sort of special priority on everything just because you meet certain criteria which were stated to SPECIFICALLY apply to Going Rogue.

"The prepurchase option for Going Rogue is available NOW! Get Dual Pistols Immediately upon prepurchase and Demon Summoning with the launch of Issue 17."

Copied and pasted from the launcher. Granted, it's just as likely that they'll patch it in later, since they may want to do focus testing on specific features before they bring a brand new, potentially complicated power set into the mix. Otherwise, most testers might be too busy making their hawt erpeez succubi toons to provide quality feedback on the other features and changes.

    BS/WP PvP

Hey everyone, I've noticed that there isn't exactly a plethora of information on BS/WP in PvP. I understand that Broadsword isn't the number one primary for this, but I built the character for concept reasons. I was just wondering if anyone had any input or guidance they could offer in regards to power picks, slotting and IO sets. Money isn't an object, although I would prefer to keep it to rare IO sets and purples, as the PvP recipes are selling for billions on Virtue at the moment.

By the way, I'm leaning strongly towards 1v1 arena duels, although zone PvP isn't out of the question. I'm just looking to have a little fun.
  16. All this whining. Everybody's got this "gimme more" mentality, when they've already got plenty of content to enjoy. Then you've got the others who proudly state that they don't even want a beta invite, with some even restating it, as if it fulfills some inherent desire to go against the grain and stand out.

Kinda makes me wish they didn't even announce closed beta, so it would be a surprise for most people when the issue hits open beta. Not to mention it would keep 90% of the game's population from periodically trying to log in as if they were magically granted access, as well as cluttering up the boards with useless garbage.

    TL;DR - Suck it up.

My favorite is Williams Square in Founders Falls, even after 5 years it still makes me catch my breath. I would love to hear the full track.

I want a COH Soundtrack SO BAD! I would pay money for that. C'mon, Devs, that's a microtransaction waiting to happen!

PS: I also want a full size wall poster.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Uhm... I think you can download the soundtracks for free, there's an FTP folder with all of them in it.

The trick is remembering where it is, which is where it all falls down for me, of course.

Hm... I don't recognize a lot of that music in the CoV folder... it would be SWEET to have them somewhere in the game, though.
