  1. 64 bit has more chance of there not being compatible drivers for peripherals though doesn't it? I've not used Vista before so I figure it'll be easier to work with the 32 version for now and worry about 64 bit down the road when I feel I might need the extra RAM.

it'd be good to hear how your setup performs so I can offload all the risk-taking in your direction.

    Cheers

I'm going with 32 bit Vista for the time being as that's all Dell offers on the model I went with. I'll more than likely upgrade to 64 bit in the future so that's why I went with the 4 Gbs of RAM.
  3. I went with this configuration in the end:

    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Quad-Core Processor Q9450 (2.66Ghz, 1333MHz FSB, 12MB cache)
    MONITOR 24in S2409W WIDESCREEN UK Black (1920 x 1080)
HARD DRIVE 1.2 TB (2x 640 GB) Serial ATA (7200 Rpm) Dual HDD Config Raid 0 Stripe
    MEMORY 4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [4x1024]
GRAPHICS CARD 1GB nVidia GeForce GTX 280 graphics card
OPTICAL DRIVE Blu-Ray RW Disc Drive (read/write CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Disc)
SOUND SOFTWARE SoundBlaster™ XFI™ Xtreme Gamer Card

I'm hopeful I'll soon be able to wander around the COV zones with better than the 10 - 20 fps I'm currently getting

    Oh, and happy birthday Kinenetical

I appreciate the offer but I think the worrier in me prefers the peace of mind of having a warranty and being able to phone my good friends in India if I run into trouble and need support. Thanks for the offer though

  6. Thanks, that's some more food for thought. Dell aren't hugely flexible with their graphics card options within each of their base model types so I'm going to have to work with what they offer. That said, the 280 looks mighty fine for my current/future needs from what I've read up on this evening.

Widows = game in easy mode after lvl 24
VEAT story arcs = load of tosh
VEAT costumes = fine, if you're into them.

I'm looking forward to trying a crab/bane once I get my widow to 50 so I can see how they play.

Edited for accuracy Widows before lvl 24, without a team, are pain and dev hate given form

I soloed to lvl 24, as I do with all my characters these days. In my opinion getting to lvl 24 was as easy or easier than any other character I've played.

  9. Cheers for the responses guys. I've got a HD video camera that I'd use more if I had a computer capable of editing its recordings so I think I may go with quad core for that. I've been having a think about upgrading Vista to 64 bit myself and I think I'll hold off on that until I've had the computer a while to see if I need the extra oomph that that'd bring.

The current model I'm looking at has a Dual SLI 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT card or a 1GB nVidia GeForce GTX 280 graphics card available for a little more moolah - which'd be better for my needs/less likely to mess me about for playing games? I'd hate to get a new computer and find after that I can't play COH/V without crashing
  10. I've decided it's time to retire my current laptop and am hoping to buy a new computer in the new year. I was wondering if more knowledgeable users than me could give me a few pointers regarding what I should be choosing when it comes to the various components.

I'll be going for a desktop this time and I'll be buying from Dell (I have a good history with them and I don't have the hardware skills to build a computer or know anyone who could build for me). I'll mostly be using the computer for COH/V but will also probably use it for other newly released games and also some HD video watching/editing (although possibly not too much of the editing).

The main queries I have are:
OS - Vista Home Premium or Ultimate or does it even matter? (Dell doesn't do 64 bit in the range I'm looking at so that's not an issue)
Processor - Dual Core or Quad Core or does it even matter?
Graphics Card - NVIDIA or ATI?
Ageia PhysX card - would it add much to my COH-playing enjoyment?

Any comments on the above would be greatly appreciated!
  11. I'm still having to /sync most play sessions, sometimes every mission and exit to zone during the play session. The /sync command is great (I would genuinely have quit the game by now if we didn't have it) but it would be nice to not need it.
  12. I'd go Fire/SS/Fire personally - that way you have perma rage boosted damage most of the time but also get the benefit of fiery embrace on fire blast and fireball from the ancillary pool.
  13. Just spotted this on the US forum and thought I'd share:

    [ QUOTE ]
Prestige Refunds: The programming team has set up a refund system for all base plots, rooms and items. As soon a player loads into a base, that base will automatically refund the Prestige difference. This is crucial: the base must be entered in order to trigger the Prestige refund. If your base is not loaded, then the refund will not happen until someone enters it.

When was the map sync bug at its worst? I know that certainly killed my will to log in.
  16. I've no idea how many doors I clicked but I gained a couple of levels on my mid-30's night widow in the process. I got 102 salvage pieces before I out-levelled Nerva and gave up on trick or treating (incidentally, I had collected 88 salvage pieces before I finally got the Buster badge). I only took part in a few invasions due to poor computer performance but enjoyed the ones I did do, especially on my SS/FA brute; I think he was the only one I got the boss badge on and I couldn't be bothered trying to get the pumpkin head costume part on any character.
  17. There's Moth cemetary in Dark Astoria and there's a cemetary in one of the villain zones too (Sharkshead?) so maybe it's "defeat x no. of bad guys within the cemetary perimeter and the zombies spawn"
  18. From the first chat log file in my COH folder, dating back to 2006 during an innocent visit to Atlas...

[Tell]Total Stranger: eo u want to hve sex with me
    [Tell]-->Total Stranger: shoo

And then 2 minutes later in local chat I see:
    [Local]Innocent Bystander: no
    [Local]Total Stranger: y
    [Local]Innocent Bystander: cause i dnt

I assume they were getting similar tells to me

    Hami raids

The first time with my troller who seemed to spend most of his time facedown as he was in the wrong place all the time would be rezzed then killed straight away

I remember that raid - I was on PA dropping duties above Hami and every time I looked down you were dead/dying at a new location

    Ghosts....

Solo yesterday I was able to trick or treat for an hour solid before getting my first spirit so their spawning appears to be quite streaky at times.
  21. Ah, so that's why I was getting drops of two insps - I was wondering about that.
  22. I had a fair few Spirits appearing but they were the rarest (thankfully as they're a pain).

    [ QUOTE ]
The spirit badge is very hard to get but so is the Ostentatious badge. Only for the die hard badgers those two. Perseverence is all you need.

    [/ QUOTE ]

What's the Ostentatious badge awarded for? I got it yesterday (never realised I was a die hard badger) but forgot to check what it was for.
