We are, for the record, talking about a level 16 Elec/SR scrapper and a level 17 Elec/shield scrapper.

(For the record, this thread is made as a discussion thread about elec/sr vs. elec/shield)
Electric/SR *is* better at lower levels. It has higher base defense and it's utilities (quickness, passives) come relatively early.

AAO and Shield charge however is game changing. Once he has a few slots in SC your Electric/SR will be weeping. Your SR will be weeping even more once the shield character is soft capped, which essentially gives it everything your SR has but with the added benefit of the things in shields. At the high end, when both characters are soft capped and heavily IO'ed, there is nothing that a SR character can do that the shield character can't do better.

I love SR as a secondary, but it has become eclipsed by shield defense. I think the only non-RP reason now to make a SR instead of shield character is that some great primaries (claws, katana) can't be paired with shields.

The answer is dependent on how you have your DB/WP character spec'ed. If it's spec'ed primary as a single target destroyer using blinding feint and attack vitals (even though its a cone), then yes, it becomes very similar to your BS/Regen - a hardy, single target oriented scrapper with moderate AoE. If your DB/WP character has the Sweep combo in addition to Attack Vitals then it is far superior to the BS/Regen in AoE and would act a bit differently in group settings.
  3. Going to give the new PvP another look. Is there any hero AT that's good to play from a support standpoint. This is for zones, since I don't have the time committment to play arena.

I'm assuming that emps are still decent, but anything else? I have a mothballed FF/Sonic Defender and a disruption oriented Earth/TA Controller. But I have no idea as to what's being used these days. I can probably roll/PL something is short order if I don't have anything useful.

This thread however makes me wonder if anyone bothers with support at all. Maybe I should bring a blaster or a scrapper like everybody else.
  4. OWtS is a nice power but one that can be skipped due to the fact that skipping it doesn't gimp your build. Further, many shield builds are extremely tight for the most part.

When I mean good it can be either for team or solo.. Don't matter I just don't want one of those toons that is good for neither if you get what I mean.
DB/WP is a great combo. WP is a great end game secondary, and DB is extremely underrated, especially with a good amount of recharge.

I have the brute version of the combo, and even though she has mostly cheaper sets, she still does great in just about anything I put her up against.

This is very true, and thanks for the correction. I keep forgetting about combat level because largely the two stay in sync for most of my characters. If I level up in a mission, I'll usually go train right afterwards. There are a few times where combat level and security level are out of sync by more than 1 level (fast moving teams, TFs), but I find those occasions rare. In PL situations, this is, of course, more common.
  7. I've always wondered why the developers didn't expand on the use of security level a lot more. As currently implemented, security level (SL) is an absolute measurement of your character's power. As you level up, you get new powers, enhancement slots and more inspiration slots. A level 50 is much more powerful than a level 5, even if the level 50 exempts down.

However, I've always thought that this absolute definition squandered a good number of RP-ish story opportunities. Comics and similar are rife with stories of heroes who attempt missions which are over their heads, and of related stories of powerful heroes dispatched to rescue weaker ones when the threats they encountered exceeded the power they had. Further, in comics, absolute power levels doesn't always correlate with the experience they have in dealing with threats. Superman is way more powerful than Batman, but would anyone argue that sometimes Batman is a better choice at handling certain threats rather than Supes? Both would be level 50 in this game, but their actual power levels is way different.

I remember reading one of the very early CoH comics and seeing a hero flying into a hazard zone and watching another hero and his sidekick limp towards the gate (obviously after being defeated). I was expecting that kind of mission when I first started this game, and was somewhat disappointed when I found out they didn't exist. I expected missions to be more like this:

    Quote:
Field Factor, it's good that you're here. Lady Aurora and her sidekick, Cosmic Lad, entered Crey's Folly seven hours ago to recover a stolen weapons shipment. There has been no word from them for three hours. They have missed their communications check point. Emergency medical evac systems have failed to extract them. SKYOMNI has restricted this mission for heroes with level 35 security clearance and higher. Will you accept?
In the above scenario, your character would probably have level 35 security clearance based on past successes but may not have level 35 power levels. Maybe your actual power level is level 27 or 28, but because of player skill, a powerful build, good synergy between primary and secondary power sets, etc, you're able to take on missions way higher than your actual level. As you continue to take on higher security level missions, your character would be eligible for higher security levels, which would in turn open up harder missions.

Meanwhile, your actual power level would go up independently of security level. When your character would find missions too difficult to complete, you would take on missions at your native power level (or even lower) and bring up your actual power. In such a system, security level and power level would be independent and self balancing. Your security level may even get downgraded if you failed a string of missions in a row.

I realize that in the actual game, this doesn't work that way. Instead difficulty is set by level and adjusted by difficulty options. Further, the purple patch limits the range of possible missions by almost making it impossible to take on foes 6 or more levels ahead. Yeah, I know I'm 6 years too late on this subject. I'm just rueing the fact that there was a lost opportunity and that Security Levels in how they work could've been implemented a lot more elegantly, perhaps making things like difficult options less important.

That would be fine. Entries have a minimum of 3 costumes, but can be more. What the poster does with the influence after they win it is completely up to them.

My question is, can a more artistically inclined person be allowed to draw a costume?
While I would love to include drawings, I think that would render too much of an unfair advantage. So, yes the submissions are screencaps only.

And as ShadowWings already mentioned, I'm looking for a makeover not a duplicate of what they have in game. I'm well aware of the unique pieces, some of which are very nice. However, do the best you can with the tools at your disposal.
  11. I got a PM on rule #7, so I thought I should answer it here because I bungled writing it. I've revised it because I didn't write it carefully enough and it implied that I would only take 50 entries, which wasn't my intent. The revision is below:

    Quote:
    7. Contest starts as soon as you see this post. The deadline for participation in this contest ends either on March 4, 2010 or upon the receipt of the entry of the 50th participant. Each participant can have up to five entries, but only if they are entered before the entry of the 50th person. Entries received after 11:59 Pacific Time on March 4, 2010 or received after the 50th person has entered will not be considered. On March 5th, I will begin the judging phase and announce a winner by Wednesday, March 10th. I will then contact each winner and award prizes.
That means that contest is capped at 50 people total. But each person that enters could have 1 to 5 entries apiece.

Contest can end under 2 conditions:
    1. March 4, 2010 - contest ends even if less than 50 people
    2. 50th person enters the contest with at least 1 valid entry (3 costume screen shot)

Gender/origin changes are fine, but label the character so I can recognize it. A write up on the reason for the gender/origin change would be nice too, but not required.

Rule 4: You can have up to five entries, three costumes per entry.

    Good luck!
  13. The Virtue Server Costume Makeover Contest

    Introduction

With the Going Rogue expansion, many of the Praetorians are getting updated looks. While that's great, it leaves the Original Eight, the Freedom Phalanx, looking rather dated. I have never been crazy about the way some of them look. In particular, I've always hated how Sister Psyche has an ampule belt combined with the strappy top and somehow that's supposed to make her look like a mutant psychic. Manticore's outfit is also pretty bad in my opinion. None of them have great outfits and there is plenty of room for improvement.

I have tinkered around a little on my own in creating an updated look for the Freedom Phalanx, but thought that it would be neat to solicit the Virtue community, have some fun before Going Rogue and award some prizes at the same time.

Prizes (Updated 2/23/10)!!! 2.1B in total influence prizes.

    1st Place - 600 Million Influence
    2nd Place - 400 Million Influence
    3rd Place - 300 Million Influence
    4th Place - 200 Million Influence
    5th Place - 100 Million Influence
    6th Place - 100 Million Influence

50 Million for the best individual costume for each Freedom Phalanx member. Eight (8) individual prizes available.

Other prizes may be awarded at my whim or discretion.

    The Contest

The object of the contest is simple. Revise at least three of the current Freedom Phalanx costumes and post your new updated looks to this thread.

The current Freedom Phalanx members are Statesman, Sister Psyche, Positron, Back Alley Brawler, Manticore, Numina, Synapse and Citadel.

    Rules

    1. To be valid, a participating entry must be posted on this thread. I strongly advise you to post good looking screenshots with the best resolution your computer can muster. If you don't have a great computer, have a friend take a screenshot for you and post it on photo bucket or imageshack, so you can link it for your entry.

    2. Entries must include at least 3 members of the Phalanx which have been made over. Entries can include more than 3 members. Each of the costumes must show off the full body shot of the new look. A picture featuring a costume from the waist up or pictures that purposely obscure key parts of the costume may invalidate the entry. Entries *MUST* label each costume so I can tell which hero is being referenced.

    3. Pictures posted on this thread must be of a reasonable size. Please try not to post extreme wide angle pictures. As a guideline, try to keep entries smaller than the picture of the Freedom Phalanx I've included.

    4. Each participant can enter up to five times. Yes, it's possible to win the entire 850 million all by yourself. However, each entry must have at least three new costumes. Also, deliberate attempts to spam poor quality entries will automatcally disqualify you. Please make sure that each entry is a quality work!

    5. Costumes from the various booster packs, unlocked costume pieces and veteran rewards are allowed. However, please note that I think that some of the booster pack costume pieces only look good when combined with pieces from the same set and not when combined with the more generic pieces that come with the original costume creator. This isn't to say that you shouldn't use the booster pack pieces but I wanted to make sure you were aware of this bias and that entries that simply feature Statesman in the full magic booster costume pieces won't win.

    6. My SG mates from the Legion of Freedom and the Moirai are not eligible to participate. Sorry guys.

    8. Prizes will be awarded in influence only to Virtue server characters. If you want infamy, you'll need to get someone willing to exchange your winnings for infamy. I won't be facilitating any exchanges. If you want a character on another server to have the influence, it is your responsibility to arrange for a transfer or move.

    Judging

As the person who is putting up 100% of the prize money, the buck literally stops with me. I will be the final arbiter of who wins this contest.

However, I will heavily take into consideration forum reader feedback. Entries which solicit a lot of positive feedback *will* influence my final decision. So, if you have friends and colleagues, don't be shy with having them drop by this thread and cheer for your entry. It *will* help you.

Optionally, each participant is encouraged to add a small write up with each entry they submit explaining the concept behind their makeover. Such optional write ups will be viewed favorably!

    Good luck everyone!
  14. I wouldn't be opposed to this if it was an earnable accolade temp power like the field crafter portable invention with the same limitations.

Things do get better. Alot better.

One of the problems with blasters at the mid to high levels is the high amount of mez in the game. With an ice/ice, that's really not an issue since you can either mez opposition before hand or apply a very nice AoE slow/-rech via shiver. Delivery of damage isn't effective if you can't survive the alpha strike or the counter attack. Ice/Ice can neatly sidestep this issue.

Damage isn't an issue really since the blasts are so fast. I don't have frost breath, but ice storm is excellent as is blizzard. For damage output, I focus on single target blasts and melee blaps (ice sword, freezing touch) with ice storm and blizzard thrown in when they're available.

    *shrugs*

Then I'll give you one. Go do lowball bids on Heal/Rech recipes, craft them and then sell them. All of the heal/rech IOs are in demand. For the level 30 and under versions, bid on max level ones, but I've had 27-29s sell decently too.

I used to do this too, but I found that it wasn't a good use of my market slots. At best, a stack of 10 rare salvage may get you anywhere from 5 - 10M per market slot minus market fees. More likely, you'd get half that. You could sell 1 crafted IO and get far better returns.

    BS/Regen or /WP

    Stefanie,

I don't like either build. Some of the slotting is really off.

Parry in both builds for example need a lot more accuracy, it could also do with more recharge as well. And the slotting on Disembowel and Head Splitter are criminally bad. Those are your two heaviest hitting attacks and they're way under-enhanced in almost every regard.

I really dislike how you slotted the following powers:

WP: Mind Over Body, Fast Healing, Weave, Disembowel, Head Splitter, Parry, Focused Accuracy, and that you took the self-rez over SoW.

Regen: Fast Healing, Dull Pain, Instant Healing, that you took the self rez and over MoG. Also, Parry, Disembowel, Head Splitter.

You need to stop chasing set bonuses so much and focus on getting good enhancement values first.
  20. Fury Flechette

    Numina Bug Fixed

Is that just a fix pertaining to physical perfection or is there some other power that boosts recovery/regen that I'm not thinking of?

So whats ur opinion with Brutes and power choices early on from lvl 1?
    Easy (but strong) starter classes:

    Villains: Super Strength/Willpower Brute
    Heroes: Katana/Willpower Scrapper

Both are good with minimal investment (SOs only) and can be improved a lot with major investment. Try one of those and get a feel for the game first then play around with some of the other combinations.

This game encourages you to make alts, so don't be afraid to roll a bunch and play around. You'll find there are some combination that you'll enjoy better than others.
  22. Illusion, Plant or Mind with just about any secondary = very easy and strong soloing controller. Just remember at the early levels to slot your single target hold (blind, strangler, dominate) with damage and to take deceive/confuse/seeds when it becomes available.

Mako's are a shy short of max ED damage and Touch of Death has poor accuracy for 6 sets. Nonetheless, shortcomings from both sets can be made up by global set bonuses elsewhere. Getting +dmg and +acc isn't that hard. So even if they aren't super optimal in of themselves, they're the best pick for your secondary.

    Quote:
I do wish I could just put combat jumping there instead of Weave for the big drop in toggle cost, but then if I moved all 3 slots from CJ to SS (for the 3rd Zephyr) and to Evasion (for being able to 6-slot Red Fortune) then I'd still be short a bit. I like to shoot for 47.5 if I can get it, in case I get defense debuffed, I like to still float at 45% (factoring in my level 50 values for defense debuff resistance).
Getting to 47.5% is not worth that much IMO. SR has the best defense debuff protection among all secondaries, so even debuffed, you won't see your defense fall precipitously. SR usually worries more about streakbreaker enabled strings of criticals. Obviously, it's your character, but from a min/max perspective, better endurance usage and being able to move slots to make your character better > extra defense over the soft cap.
  24. Lewis,

You'd be far better off using Touch of Death and Mako's Bite in your attacks since you're 6 slotting your attacks anyway. They give 3.75 defense to melee and range respectively, while Kinetic Combats only give you 1.88% to melee (3.75% to smash/lethal which is typed defense, not positional).

Going that way will allow you to change your build fairly radically since you may not even need Weave. I actually wouldn't recommend taking Weave since it does nothing for you other than take endurance and you can soft cap without it. I'd dump it for combat jumping and slot up some Blessing of the Zephyr for some easy ranged and AoE defense. That will allow you to slot less Mako's Bite and Scirocco's respectively.

Additionally, I'd slot up health and stamina a lot more with all those freed slots.

    FF
  25. My list:

    * Vehicles
    * Destructible environments
    * Non-human body forms (think 4 legged beasts, Centaurs, etc.)
    * Craftable ammunition, magic artifacts, armor (temp powers that stack with character damage, defenses)
    * Changing city environment (e.g., original idea for CoH was to tie statues in the city to actual amount of influence your character had)
    * Account wide bank
    * Far better PvP (better mechanics, better balance, better RP justifcation, better rewards, less susceptible to griefing)
    * Better character customization
