Quote:If I ever go a week without screwing something up on the forum post for the featured items, I'm gonna request a raise. In other news, are those images in the first post not loading for anyone else?
(The work fine on the announcement page, just not on the discussion page.)
Luckily for management, that'll probably never happen.
There was an errant quotation mark in the middle of the links, breakz0ring them. All good now!

Hey y'all!
Today, I went to Infinity to run an arc that will definitely resonate with artists and historians alike! "Crime is Art and Art is Crime" (Arc #517859 by @TwoFlower) is an arc that starts as a simple task of stopping a Carnie art exhibit given us by an overly-affectionate police officer, but if you thought it was that simple! well, you've probably not been running many AE missions! With a story that eventually takes us back to the roots of the United States, this is an arc that clearly has a lot of effort put into it! Multiple custom NPC groups, excellent descriptions, and great map choices, this isn't a mission you'll be wanting to miss!
Thank you to all the good people of Infinity who came out to join in! I'm truly sorry I wasn't able to take all of you, but hopefully you'll run this arc on your own and experience it!
From Left to Right: OBLI VION, Miss May I, Woden, spider villain, Aualahkhe, Dot.Matrix and Ma' Tank!
Thank you very much, and until next time!

Grandville
The image of Captain Mako on the screen turned and waved happily at Barracuda.
"Hello there, have you been enjoying the show? So many people have been, it's like an epidemic!" The Television said in Mako's voice. "It's been such a wonderful week, everyone tuning in, watching Television like they should, and your good friend Captain Mako has been helping me; the footage he's given me to work with is bar none! Please thank him for me when you see him next."
Barracuda growled and hissed as she pushed a member of the Freakshow out of the way, she got up real close to the screen.
"End this now or I'm pulling your plug. Capisco?" She looked over the gathered and then back to the screen.
"Why would I end this? It's gotten me some of the most loyal watchers I've ever had! Afraid this whole thing will 'Jump the Shark'? Ooh, please tell me you saw that footage with Mako and the skier." The Television hummed deep in its diodes, Barracuda smiling.
"Actually yes, but I'm willing to make a deal with you. I'll talk to Mako, he'll do this once a year for you, put on a great show, all carnage and blood. You know his sorta thing. But only if you stop this rainbow and gumdrop lie you have about him and sharks. Think of it, you get this, all this attention, every year instead of this big flash in the pan sweeps attempt."
The image of Captain Mako on the screen paused in thought.
"But my current viewership, if they found out I lied to them, they might abandon me, how can I keep them affixed to the screen if they don't have Shark Frenzy to look forward to when they get home from their jobs?"
Barracuda shrugged. "Well, folks have been going to the movies lately with that Double Feature of Time Gladiator and Casino Heist, I'm sure turnabout is fair play if you take some of those viewers back." She chuckled. "Do something unexpected, but it's not my problem now. I expect folks to be scared of sharks by the end of the day. I'll send word to Lord Recluse that what has been affecting Mako is over, and you can try and figure out the risk versus the reward of your viewership that's afflicted with a love of rainbow, bubblegum animals."
The image of Captain Mako stopped and smiled wide. "I have just the idea... You know, you aren't so bad, miss. I might have to put you in the movies one of these days."
Sharkhead Isle
Captain Mako swam ashore in the morning, stretching as he beached himself. He felt the air hit his lungs as his gills contracted down. Once he started seeing the news reports about how scientists were wrong and that sharks really WERE dangerous nightmare beasts made of rage, fury, and hunger, he knew the whole thing would be over with.
He had spoken to Barracuda and Lord Recluse, learning the full seriousness of his attacks. While his pride was damaged, his standing in Arachnos was not. Although he may have been fought off by the Heroes of Paragon City and the Villains of the Rogue Isles in his myriad attacks, his drive and continued hunger kept his image pure. If one general of Arachnos could do that much damage after the fact, imagine what all of Recluse's army could do.
He looked at the soldiers who stood at rigid attention, letting him pass as he entered his domicile. Had it only been a matter of days since this had started? Since he was referred to as the 'bunny of the ocean'? He looked around the room, all evidence of his fury having been cleaned for him, the communication center replaced.
He shook his head, this whole ordeal started with these pathetic rituals and habits of his, of Gideon Ray. He wasn't that man anymore and had no desire to be. He looked at the faded photograph of the man and the woman, in the still of the morning he spoke.
"My name is Captain Mako, and I killed your son Gideon. I grew inside of him and like every ship I have ever sailed; I forced my way into control. He is the first vessel I laid claim to and I am not sorry for it. I took his name as my own, I own every molecule of him and I'm not giving him back. But his little habits, I kept them too. Nothing but trouble, they are. So you know what, I'm gonna leave them in the ocean like so much debris." With that he picked up the photo and put it in a drawer, locking it.
"Good riddance."
He looked at the screen, chuckling at the newscasters reported on his many attacks, the injuries across the Isles and Paragon. Disturbing images flashed and excited him. He walked to the cooler and grabbed a machete, grabbing himself a hunk of cow, the vision before him making him hungry.
He ate his meal and grabbed the remote, to end this ordeal. The last time he would indulge the actions of the herd. The habits of Gideon Ray would end. There is only Mako, and he didn't need such unnecessary things clogging up his day.
"Well, that's the end of the morning news on WSPDR, in light of recent events we have changed out our morning rotation from Jibberjowls to a new cartoon sweeping the nation due to its popularity in the theatres. Stay tuned for Magical Dream Unicorns!"
Mako groaned as the pastel images, so similar to the ones that offended him over the past week, filled the screen with giggling horses.
"Gee Lucky Charm, do you think the dragons in the next valley REALLY want to come to the dance party?" Mako blinked.
Thirty minutes later, he stood before the screen as the credits rolled.
"Well," Captain Mako thought, "One habit wouldn't hurt."

Cap Au Diable
Mako skimmed the oceans along the beach. He had become withdrawn, the hunt not as appealing to him anymore. A public appearance became something to be seen like a rare bird in the sky, something to gaze upon in wonder and happiness. The fear of his prey had been taken from him, with this Shark Frenzy rooting itself in the minds of the denizens of the Rogue Isles and Paragon City.
The man who was once Gideon Ray swam far and wide, attacking ships, sticking to the shadows, anything to be seen as a threat. He had re-doubled his efforts once more to cause havoc and destruction, to show the primal bloodlust that had earned him his place in the highest of Echelons of Arachnos.
Every night, his actions of destruction and vile harm were replaced with cutesy clips from websites, even a viral image of him attacking a DJ with a speaker entitled Captain Mako drops the bass! was circulating the internet. Shark based cartoons, documentaries, songs, all with that same bubblegum and rainbow image glued right on top of it, and he had been tacked on as the poster boy for all this nonsense.
He looked over at the beach, an entire brigade of Luddites marching, preaching their propaganda against the evils of technology. Mako grinned; they wouldnt have anything other than the most basic defenses, knives and clubs. It would be a massacre. He felt his heart pump, the adrenaline rush of a real drag out fight, exploding from the water towards them.
They screamed in panic.
Mako laughed and then stopped short. These people were still afraid of him; he could taste it on the air. He ran, claws flexed and ready to strike. He saw them scatter, and went after one of the slower members, grabbing him and laughing.
You there, you fear me? I thought everyone LIKED sharks, thought us to be bouncing little bunnies on a sea of marshmallows. He leans in close, snapping his jaws inches from the terrified mans neck.
What are you talking about, youre a SHARK! Why wouldnt we fear, we know your reputation, weve seen the aftermaths of your attacks. Youre a bloodthirsty killer!
The man quivered and felt the sand hit his feet, being let down. His legs weakened from the experience gave way under him, and he fell on his rump.
Mako loomed over him.
You remind the others of that.
3 Hours Later
I just told you everything I know! said the Luddite to Barracuda, shaken from his experiences with Mako and now his protégé.
Let me get this straight, he attacked you, you RAN in fear, he caught you and released you. She scoffed; this couldnt possibly be the best lead she had at solving what was causing this Shark Frenzy. The man nodded; explaining the whole sequence of events once more. She dropped him and shook her head.
Am I free to go? I swear Ill do anything you want. Ill stop protesting the PTS, stop fighting you Arachnos and those Destined Ones. Anything you want! Heck Id even watch television if you told me to, and trust me when I say that there is nothing good among about that, we swear theres a demon behind that screen, whispering lies.
Barracuda blinked and dropped the man. Yes, go. She said quietly as she looked out over the ocean. She grinned and watched the choppiness of the waves, looking to the Luddite. Ill give you a 2 minute head start for your assistance. He went pale and turned, running along the beach, until his lungs breathed acid from the strain. He just had to jump past what little tide pool and he would be home free.
His last thoughts were that he never expected to feel hands grabbing him from the water.
Barracuda laughed as the Coralax claimed another victim. Now she had all the pieces in place. It all made sense now, but it would take her some time to collect her thoughts and approach the source of all this.
Grandville

Quote:A possible solution for giving the red names more time during the events, and the players a more dynamic invasion, could be to create a destination point for invaders in each zone, and 4 invasion spawn points on the edges of the zones - that way, the mobs would seem like they were acting with more purpose by moving in towards the destination point ratehr than just hanging around in the streets.
The spawn points would need to have a list of all types of invaders attached to them that the red names could select, and then just flip the switch to activate the spawn points - for example, for this Mako week invasion on Talos island, they'd pick the suitbale mobs from the list attached to the invaison spanws, and then turn the event on - Coralax and Arachnos mobs would then spawn a the 4 spawnign points around the edges of the Talos island map and head towards the destination point - which would be the hill by the transit station.
The mobs would keep spawning at regular intertvals, and players could choose to fight them at the spawn points, at the hill, or through the streets as they moved towards their destination.
I'm not sure if a destination point is possible. We can drag mobs around some by making them follow us, but I don't know if it's possible to tell them to go to a particular location. That, as well as creating auto spawn points, would also require development time, which isn't always available.
Quote:Frei thanks a ton for taking the time to explain as you did a few posts above. That REALLY gives all of us a clearer picture of what's going on here.
I'm a huge fan of the game and have been for 7 years. This event certainly isn't going to deter me from playing.
That said, given the information we had *or I had atleast* going into the event, I figured I had plenty of time to "participate" as long as I was here online in a zone with water before 8 pm. If there was some sort of schedule given out beforehand such as the one in Evangel's post above *the copied one* then I could have made plans accordingly.
I wanted to be as excited as you all were with all the build up and talk leading up to the event. Bubble was certainly burst, but hopefully I have a character or two on one of the remaining servers. If that's the case, I'll be on at the START of the event time and I'll keep my eyes peeled for a league to join! Hopefully I won't be left out.
A little more communication before the event started (perhaps somewhere were even non-board readers can see it--i.e. a pop-up window upon logging in) would have been EXTREMELY beneficial and put a lot of the disappointment to rest before it even happened. Putting some sort of schedule or a "what-to-do" out there for us to see would have given us accurate expectations. It didn't have to be completely detailed as I know you wanted there to be some sort of surprise with all this. Just a suggestion.
In any event, one of the things I love about this game is the various special events that come up. I really enjoy taking part in them!! LOVED the Summer Blockbuster event, the Christmas events, Halloween, etc. I guess those give us time to figure them out because they last longer, where this Mako event was BOOM, gone! If you missed it, oh well. That's where my frustration comes in because I feel like I followed the information out there, but still didn't get to participate. Like I said before, hopefully I can learn from this and use what I learned by missing out on Victory to make it a successful event for me on another remaining server.
We posted a schedule on the Forums, Facebook, Google+, the City of Heroes Website, and Twitter a number of times prior to the event. I believe there were also multiple MotD's informing players of where to look for the schedule. If there's another place we could have posted it, we'd love to do that.
We also made announcements prior to the events in-game informing players of where the event would take place, the difficulty level of the enemies, and what to expect after the spawning was ended (e.g. go to Pocket D for titles/a chance at codes).
I understand there's some frustration about communication if you missed all these messages, but we really did try our best to inform as many people as possible about what was going to happen.
Quote:For one this event has posted up for about say a month or so ( someone can correct me) a few things bother me:
1) No badge? I mean what heck the Fallen Thunder gave one why not this ? The fact as a player I have to get on an appropriate time is just a tad inconvenient. It's whatever I shrug it off and understand the process of scheduling, but a temporary gold title goes away. A random chance at code is luck of the draw. At least a badge shows you participated in the event. Maybe I'm on the only of that feels this way.
2) Where is Captain Mako? I fight an Octopus that clearly has no correlation with mako and some coralax here and there , but the the big bad fish is a no show? You might as well called it "Lusca Revenge Week".
3) The distribution of gold titles needs to be looked over because a lot folks went to the various Pocket D's only to leave empty handed with no gold title or a crack at a code
Overall , I really did not like this event one bit. I expected something more from a character in game that has high precedence instead I got a fish flop.
Let me address your questions one by one:
1) A badge would require development time, and it would require some method of delivery. Certainly not insurmountable, but for an event where the idea is to avoid taxing the developers with more stuff to do when they're already working extremely hard and staying late to get what is already scheduled done, it's a problem.
2) The reason it's difficult to have Captain Mako appear is because it requires one of us to be located in a zone, visible, and just swimming around for a significant period of time. When there are ten or more zones to hit during an invasion, and with spawned mobs dying as quickly as they do, this just isn't possible. We are constantly moving to a location on the map to spawn enemies, spawning enemies, or moving to the next map in order to spawn enemies there to prevent players from getting bored.
3) There are possibly some ways we can improve the handing out of titles. I'll look into this. As far as code give-aways are concerned, we hit every Pocket D, and even came back to ones we'd done early in the give-aways and title granting period, in order to make sure that even those who didn't make it on time would get a code.
Thanks for the continued dialogue people! Remember, we'll be on Zukunft and Vigilance in an hour and a quarter, and on Guardian and Justice later this evening!

Hi guys! Some good ideas here, let me try to address them individually.
Quote:For future events like this I think a good way to avoid the boredom would be to have an objective for the event. It would take development time but would make your lives easier if you could have some object that spawns enemies and the players need to destroy that object. The rate at which it spawns enemies could be based on the number of players within a certain range of it, you could probably use a modified version of the rikti invasion code for this. It could have an insane amount of HP but very low regen to ensure that the fight isn't over too fast but also that stopping to clean up the spawned critters doesn't make you lose all your progress. Maybe have it occasionally spawn a critter that will try to heal it so that players have extra incentive to watch the spawns.
That way all you guys have to do is drop the object in zone and it handles the rest for you. On larger servers you could drop multiple objects. Then any witty banter or signature enemies you want to throw out would just be icing on the cake.
Something like this would of course be ideal in terms of reducing our workload, but it's less than optimal for our devs. The reason we run events manually is so that we can avoid using up development time. Sometimes we're able to get dev time to support invasions if there's some downtime where the developers aren't so busy, but in this case, it wasn't an option, so it was a choice between doing the invasion manually, and not doing it at all. Of course, we chose to do it in a more limited and problematic form since, as I stated earlier, we feel these events are something really important for our players, and it's something we and y'all really enjoy.
Quote:Thanks for the info Freitag.
For what its worth, I enjoyed the event on defiant, especially the punningsoooo many fish jokes to be made!
Now, I enjoyed the event...but it was very very chaotic and haphazard and , your explaination of how it works in the background shows why this is so. Fair enough, I have to say thank you very much for all the time and effort you and the other Devs put into providing events like this for us players.
was this the bestest event I ever played?
honestly? no. That would be the end invasion of redside beta when we fought off freedom phalanx and longbowI remember dying happy that I managed to ignore all other mobs, survive the lag and land one solid punch on States before I faceplanted...
But I realise not all events can be like that and a lot of what makes CoH what it is , is the players you play alongside. So, despite what you admit can be "samey" content, the event was, for me great fun.
Rather than just make yet another comment on the event without offering something in return, here's how I would have liked the event to go and yes, I realise that it more than likely would not be possible because of technical issues but I hope it gives someone some degree of inspiration for something in the future
yeah yeah, I know, never could happen but hopefully it will give an idea of what, for me, would be a perfect event and will serve as better feedback than "that was boring" or "that sucked!"
Your event sounds pretty good in theory, and maybe we'll try to take a page out of your proverbial book in future invasions, but there are a couple problematic things with it. It would work great if each of us only had one zone to look after, but once we start doing multiple zones, there's an incredible potential for confusion.
Another issue is the speed at which people kill stuff. We have to, for example, spawn more stuff for a zone with 100 people than a zone with 25 people. It's probably workable, but it introduces more complexity than, say, dropping 50 mobs for 100 players vs dropping 10 mobs for 25 Players.
Quote:I'm one who uses the word Devs. But I use it to represent all of NCSoft. A Red name is the same as a Red shirt at Target to me. You are the one that is representing your company at that point whe you interact with the customer. It doesn't matter if I ask a person where the Tide is and they work in the Food section. They should be able to direct me to either the right area or the right person. Same here. When an issue is brought up, we your customers shouldn't have to wonder what your current title is, what office you sit in, or even if you had a personal stake in said issue. What we need is that the issue is passed on to the correct person/department. That is something that you know where it goes. To expect an outsider to know your inner workings is a folley. People who read the forums may know some of who is who, but the forum makes up only 10% of the population. That leaves 90% who have no idea at all.
But back to the 3 hour window. On Freedom last night after the pocket D party. People who came in late found a giant mutant Lusca still in Talos. Spent a good 40 minutes killing it with a small league. A good half of these people didn't know the event had already ended. All the same disapointed remarks came out. "Where's Mako?, "How do I get my gold title?" "Is that all there is?" and so on. You may have the best of intentions but the execution is lacking. This is why so many people are having a "ho hum experience".
Now it is nice to see that you are reading the replies, and some change has happen. Like Dropping PI and focusing on Talos. But frankly you shouldn't of been using the first few servers as a beta test.
I understand that there's frequently confusion about titles and so forth. That's why I made that statement. I wanted to be clear who was involved, and who wasn't. While it may sound reasonable the way you put it, it's really not reasonable to complain about an artist when the issue is a live event that the artist had absolutely nothing to do with. Maybe you ask the artist who in Community to talk to, and maybe they'll know, but my concern was with people blaming the development team as a whole when most of them are only nominally aware of the event in the vaguest of terms. It's not their responsibility.
I understand the difficulties of a 3 hour window, and if a mob stays up after we stop spawning stuff, then of course that's a potential issue. I'm sorry those players were frustrated, but I was trying to explain the methodology above, and everything I said still holds true.
Thanks for the reasoned dialogue folks!

Quote:Oh yes, the rule of Evens, which I believe Star Trek 2011 broke? I think?Let's not forget 'Star Trek:The Motion Picture', followed by 'The Wrath of Khan'. The first film was an atrocity. The second was one of the best Star Trek films. That's a series that has been really hit or miss. Some of the films were truly awful and some were great.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to take a moment and explain some of the methodology behind the way we run these events, and why we run them the way we do.
First off, it's important to remember that we do these events entirely manually.
For the most part, it's members of the Community Team only (which is to say: Zwillinger, Hit Streak and myself). Each mob that is dropped is dropped by us manually. On smaller servers, this isn't as big of a deal, because there aren't many active zones. Generally we're doing two servers at once, so we need to split up between servers. Depending on the populations of the servers, we'll send two people to one server, and one person to another. If we're lucky, we can get one of the great people from CS to help out with spawning stuff, but they have their own stuff to work on (such as answering your tickets) which they of course must prioritize.
In a situation like tonight, we had 4 people for the first bit of the event, which dropped to three eventually. We had one team member on Victory, and two-three on Freedom. On Freedom, we had, I believe, 2 instances of Sharkhead Isle and 8 instances of Talos Island. two of us were splitting Talos, and the third was doing Sharkhead. Then, we had to reduce to two doing the entire server.
The way it works for us (the nitty-gritty) is that we move between maps, drop a ton of enemies, which ya'll promptly destroy, because you're awesome, and while you're destroying them, we're going to 4-5 other zones trying to drop stuff there at the same time. It becomes a race against time to spawn things for you guys to keep you entertained, providing witty banter in chat whenever possible, and hitting all zones. Sometimes things go wrong and a zone gets missed. We try to avoid this, but things get confused between zones, and stuff happens.
As far as the duration of the event is concerned, the situation is two-fold. Firstly, people start getting bored. We have certain mobs that we're able to spawn for you all. Those get boring after a bit. If they're not extremely tanky (like, say, the Goliath War Walkers in the Praetorian Invasions last year), then they die very quickly, which means we have to rush back to the zone a lot faster. Since the number of enemies is limited, there's only so long you guys will want to kill tentacles, Coralax, Flyers and Arachnos. At a certain point, more people get unhappy than seem to be happy, and that point has tended to arrive between 1 and 1.5 hours into the event.
The other factor is that we have some time constraints as well. We have a maximum window of 3 hours in which to do the event. This is by necessity, because we have, often, other work to do after the events (yes, at 8pm), as well as homes and families to get back to. After today's event, we had 7 or 8 Pocket D's to attend to. We need to be in each of those zones, as quickly as possible, and hand out a significant number of codes in each zone. We do this randomly, sending PM's to random players. Sometimes, those players don't reply, and that takes up time, because we want to give them a chance to get back to us. Maybe they're putting their child to bed, and just had to step away for a minute or two right when we PM'ed, so we wait a bit. We have to hit different zones of Pocket D quickly so that we can make sure people don't get frustrated because they think they're being forgotten. In order to do all this, we can't start the event at 5pm PDT, spawn stuff until 8pm PDT, and then go to Pocket D for the hour plus it takes to hand out codes to as many people as we can, because by then it would be almost 9:30pm PDT, which would frustrate people who were informed that the event would last until 8pm.
We really enjoy doing these events, despite the frustrations that sometimes arise, and we feel it's important to engage the playerbase in this manner. We think you all agree with this in principle. There are probably ways we could streamline the process to make it even better, and we'll certainly try to do that.
One final thing I want to mention is that a lot of people, in-game and out, have blamed short-comings on the developers. I want to be absolutely clear that this isn't the case. Only members of the Community Team are running these events (with the exception of members of the CS team on occasion). So, if you have any frustration you'd like to get off your chests, please direct them towards us. The devs are extremely hard at work on Issue 24, where many changes from Beta testing still need to be implemented, as well as Issue 25, about which I'm not allowed to say anything.
In any case, I hope that cleared up any questions you guys may or may not have about these invasions! We look forward to seeing you at events tomorrow and on Monday!

Hey Darkbehemoth,
We're really sorry that happened. There was a miscommunication, and unfortunately we missed Sharkhead 2. In the future, we'll make every effort to be more consistent in what zones we visit so that everyone who wishes to can participate.
Again, we're very sorry that you had a negative experience. We will do our best to do better next time, and hope to see you again soon!

Hello all!
Today, I joined seven players on Guardian to run "Teh Freakshow Artz Klub" (Arc #25622 by @Geveo). Have you ever felt that the Freakshow are just misunderstood? Are you convinced that there's something more complex and meaningful going on, and that everyone is just missing it and handing the Freakshow the short end of the stick? Well then this arc is for you. What begins as a mission to rescue art critics reveals a horrible truth! What is that truth, you ask? Well, you'll have to find out for yourselves!
Joining me were the following kind players from Guardian! Many more showed up to come along, but unfortunately there just wasn't enough room!
From left to right: PrismCharged Psychic, Untamed, Ocean Spray, Tara Watt, Double-Helix, I Dygress and Serafinea Deece!
Thanks for reading, and thank you to those who joined us!

Talos Island
Captain Mako stood hunched over on the beach, growling. He was quickly surrounded by beachgoers and patrons of Spanky's Boardwalk. Photos were being taken, video of him being uploaded to websites as he heard their mantras over and over again.
"Sharks! Sharks! Sharks!" They chanted; fist pumping the air. Mako didn't know what to do; any attack was spun into something of joyous delight. He had had enough of this, and screamed at the crowd.
"Why aren't you afraid of me!? Shouldn't you be running in fear? I'm a shark! I'm a SHARK!" He cupped his face in his claws as his comments were met with a whoop of applause.
"Exactly, you're a shark! We love you!" said a lady in the crowd.
Mako sneered, "But I attacked that cargo ship! I slaughtered the crew!" The crowd held its applause for a moment, and a lone voice piped up.
"According to the police reports, that was full of contraband and Superadyne. Did you hear that? Sharks keep our city streets safe and clean!" Another round of fist pumps and hoorays assaulted his senses.
"But...but... I rampaged through City Hall!" He stood confidently, waiting the turn of the crowd.
"Actually, City Hall had been taken over by Nemesis duplicates!" another voice shouted. Mako had jokingly called himself the hero of the Rogue Isles, but this, doing honest to goodness... Well, goodness was beyond him. He'd be a laughingstock, unable to return to Arachnos. Still, the one action he was saving would cement his evil in the minds of the gathered.
"I -ATE- WOOFERS!" No way could they say something positive about his devouring of the unofficial super dog of the Freedom Phalanx. He sneered and swiped at the crowd, they backed up a moment before that single voice piped in.
"Actually, that was Woofers' evil Praetorian counterpart, DireHowl."
Mako felt defeated, but he wasn't going down without a fight. He looked at the gathered and licked his lips. Hero indeed, he'd show them all!
Later that night, the news covered how a group of shark lovers scared a dear, wonderful bunny of the ocean, which, in its fear and bewilderment, tragically, but understandably, defended itself.
The people watched their televisions, eyes fixated on the screens. Shark Frenzy had taken root.
St. Martial
Barracuda read the daily newspaper; the whole of the Rogue Isles seemed to be gripped by Shark Frenzy. From what she could gather, it was spreading far and wide. It had seemingly come from nowhere; a single drop in the world's view of the fierce aggressive predator was having a serious effect on her mentor.
She headed for the Golden Giza, stepping through its gilded doors and onto the flashing and blinking casino. She walked past the patrons exiting the nearby dance club, stern expression on her face.
A little old woman with a bucket of game tokens ran into her path, propping herself in front of a slot machine.
"I saw it first, missy!" the old woman yelled at Barracuda, who was taken aback. Kelli stared at her, feeling her anger rise from deep down.
"Excuse me, Gladys Brittlehips?!" She stepped forward toward the elderly lady, raising a claw, and suddenly felt a cold hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Ice Mistral looking at her.
"Irena, I was just about to teach this old bag a thing or two..."
Ice Mistral gave the old lady a polite smile. "Ms. Jenkins, forgive my friend. Mr. Sonata's personal guests of course get priority on the slot machines." She then turned to Barracuda. "I'm assuming this has something to do with Mako's recent attacks? I thought you'd know more than anyone about him."
Barracuda looked solemn. "It's this Shark Frenzy, it's like everyone has sharks on the brain, with no explanation as to why? I was wondering if your magic senses could tell you anything. I'm at my wit's end on this, Irena. I only have a few more days, and Mako isn't stopping. Yes he's mostly attacking Paragon, but he's been making a point to come back on his private flier to attack our own citizens as well. It's this fluffy, cuddly image. If I know him he can't stand it. -I- can't stand it."
Irena shook her head.
"No, if there is something controlling the masses, it isn't magic. I wish you luck, though. I've heard about your deadline, and it would be a shame to lose Mako."
Sharkhead Isle
Captain Mako stepped off his personal transport to be greeted by a squadron of Arachnos Soldiers, their weapons drawn. He arched a brow.
"This had better be a very bad joke. I've not had the best past few days." He growled at the assorted soldiers, who didn't even flinch.
"Sir, on the order of Lord Recluse, we are to bring you in." The troop leader had said. He heard a snicker in the back.
"There ain't any way I'm turning myself in, I'm Captain Mako, I run this island. Now you turn around before I make an example of you."
Again, the troops held their ground, until the snickering one in the back spoke up.
"Would this be before or after the tea party and crumpets?"
Mako saw red.

Quote:That's cool! I didn't actually know that. Can you link me to something discussing that? As a big fan of Pride and Prejudice, I'd love to read more about the origins of the story. I tried doing a Google Search, but came up with limited results. You do realize that Jane Austin took the Welsh book "Pride" by Fflewddur Fflam, updated it with the popular (at the time) conflict of Prejudice and made it a huge hit.
Regardless, unless she literally took the entire text from Fflewddur Fflam, and then added her own text to it, or made some edits, then I still feel similarly about it. My issue with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (and other similar books) is that you're taking one of the mechanically greatest writers of all time, and tossing in some other text written by a modern author who isn't even what would be called a contemporary, and sticking them together. It's not believable, and I still feel it is presumptuous to think you can write as well, or remotely well enough, to be able to smoothly integrate your own writing with that of Austen, unless you're absolutely sure of your own skill as an author. Perhaps Grahame-Smith is, but I'm doubtful.
Anyway, I don't want to be too stuck up about it, this is just my personal feeling about the book. It's probably a lot of fun (disclaimer: I haven't read it), but it's not my thing ^.^.
