Quote:I assure you, your experience =/= everyone's experience. Speed runs are *not* standard. The reason Posi gives so many merits is because the data shows it takes the longest, on average, to complete. And by the way, merits are not the only reward in the game. Increasing your difficulty settings increases the number of mobs, which means you get increased inf/salvage/XP as well. Boom: increased rewards. Now just looking at these Positron can be completed in about the same amount of time a STF can but has nearly double the merit return. So by your description it should have a significantly greater threshold of difficulty ?
Oh and Positron is a no fail tf. You can lose all your team and still finish, all it requires is persistence.
Quote:First lets describe the problem. Problem: Allies can be included in player generated content that enhance the players combat effectiveness by enhancing player abilities, or by decreasing enemy abilities while not doing damage to the enemies.
So now we have two sets of powers to worry about.
1. Powers that target allies.
2. Powers that target enemies but do no damage.
Quote:Now for the sake of argument lets say there is some sort of electronic list or filing system that has a record of the powers critters posses and is somehow amenable to mechanical manipulation of some kind or other. If you were to have such a list, you could immediately discard all the items that did damage to their targets. You could discard all the items that only affected the caster, and you would be left with a nice list of just the critters that actually needed review.
"Now, for the sake of argument, let's assume that we have a tool (which the devs may or may not ACTUALLY HAVE) that proves my entire point."
We know that a lot of what the devs have is kludgy and old, and I would bet they don't have a list of all the available powers in a form that would be easily sorted like this. Would it be a good idea if they did? Of course. But you don't know they have that and therefore your "proof" is invalid.
But if you do, by all means, take the afternoon, compile your super-easy list, and send it on to the devs. -
Quote:Standard code rant. There are very easy fixes that could have been deployed instead of this, or they could simply have waited till soon, and just deployed what they considered the good fix.
You have *ideas* about fixes that *seem easy* to you, but without knowing the code involved, you can't say that they definitely exist. Judging from Arcanaville's posts, it's not as easy as you think it is (and she probably knows more about this game's code than anyone who isn't a dev).
And for all we know, there is an actual specific reason why this fix needed to be deployed now, not "soon". Again, you don't know, so you can't say that there isn't.
That said, I agree that this patch breaks too many things that are not exploitative and either should be rolled back ASAP, or get the full fix in ASAP. Even if we have to wait for the full fix, since Dr. Aeon is putting at i17 release or shortly thereafter, that means 3-4 weeks, which isn't too bad in the scheme of things. -
Quote:Okay, here you go: "sometime in April"as much as i would love to keep the discussion of EAT going, id really appreciate the "release date" to I17
Re: EAT slotting -- yes, it's tight, but IOs made it a whole heck of a lot easier to get the most out of those slots. I can keep my triforms (and make each form kick-***) by frankenslotting the forms to save on slots without sacrificing enhancement. It does take a lot of planning, though. -

From Positron, February 2009:
Quote:From Positron, May 2009:We've added a TON more datamining hooks exclusively for Mission Architect as well, so we can easily see spikes in aberrant behavior. Spikes point us to exploits, which points us to log files, which reveal the identities of exploiters. So if you find a really big exploit in the system, I'd encourage you to PM me or another Dev and try to get your Bug Hunter badge, as the alternative is not pretty.
Quote:When we created Mission Architect, the goal was to have an outlet for players to craft cool stories, using our assets, that other players could play and participate in. Other players could rate those stories and the best-of-the best would rise to the top.
While we have accomplished some of those goals with the initial launch of Mission Architect, some have found ways to abuse the system we put in place. We are not blind to this happening, nor did we not expect it. However, it is time to take action regarding it, so please be aware that we are about to implement a zero-tolerance stance on the extreme abuse we are seeing in the system.
<snip>
Some of you have taken the stance of “how does powerlevelling hurt the game?” and “shouldn’t I be able to play the game the way that I want?” What we want to make clear is in order to keep the game fair, balanced, and challenging, we have to maintain a risk:reward ratio. This is a ratio we’ve spent years attempting to achieve. Mission Architect is not immune to this, and we are taking swift action to see that the problems players are seeing and are being exposed to are remedied.
The problem is, the devs want to balance giving us as much freedom as possible to tell stories through MA with restricting extreme exploitative behavior. Unfortunately, there will always, always be people pushing the envelope of the exploitative behavior, causing the devs to have to crack down on them. There is no way the devs could possibly have thought of all the restrictions necessary to prevent it (some, yes, but that's another issue). On top of that, there's a whole other priority list of what needs to be worked on, so things like this (that aren't technically *bugs*) aren't at the top of the list, and it takes time and resources to fix them. Which makes everything take longer. And then people start complaining that we haven't had a new issue in a while. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Tl;dr version: Exploiters are why we can't have nice things. -
I second the scrapper recommendation, at least for your first hero AT. They're solid enough to allow for a bigger learning curve than the other ATs.
After (or if your altitis starts acting up), I'd try a plant controller since you say you like dominators. Maybe plant/thermal or plant/kin. Plant is one of the higher-damage control sets, so it wouldn't feel as bad, damage-wise, compared to a dom. -
Quote:You don't think the Epic ATs have (at least on paper) more versatility than any one of the other ATs? Take the Kheldians, for example. You have a fragile, high-damage "blaster" form, a resistant, low-damage "tank" form (that also functions as a panic-button breakfree), and a midrange human form. Jack of all trades, master of none, but with IOs in the mix, they can be plenty strong at any or all of the three "roles".To be honest in response to those of you who think that Epic AT should just be extra AT without being better, then that is your opinion, i however feel that if i have to attain a certain level(regardless of that level) then it should be something better, something to work for not just another Blaster wannabe, or whatever. On that note i believe that they should at least be equal to the other AT if not better, and in my experience, they just aren't.
And the widows and spiders with their branching capability? Plus, since we can dual-build, you can have one character that can be either a Fortunata or Night Widow (for example) depending on your mood.
If you really think that the Epic ATs are just clones of other ATs, you haven't played them. I'm not saying they don't have their issues, but to dismiss a PB as a "blaster wanna-be" is just ridiculous.
Well, true. I didn't say they were "good" storylines, just that the Epic title was meant to refer to that, not the actual powersets of the ATs themselves. -
Quote:This. All of this. Then you were doing it wrong. Toggles are always on, and offensive debuffs are always used. Give the buffbots Dispersion Bubble or Sonic Dispersion and you have pets following you that ALWAYS grant DEF/RES and ALWAYS stack. All it takes is a couple FF users and you're soft-capped. You don't need them to cast individual buffs when they have toggles that are always on. Things like Quicksand and AoE mezzes work just fine too.
The issue is this change pretty much gives people permission to have an Earth/FF pet in every farm mission they make, while making it easier and not impacting the exp any. But it simultaneously breaks legitimate missions.
I would say that the exp drop happens based on the powers the pets have. If they have all offensive or self-defense powers, no reduction, no matter how many you have. But you start getting reductions the more buffs/debuffs they have. Even if you only have one. That would be the right way to do it. -
Quote:As far as I remember, the "Epic" title refers to the independent storyline, not the powers of the character.ok apparently i am one of the few people who felt that EAT are horrible versions of already existing AT, when i got my first 50 and i was so excited to play a PB for the first time it was awesome!!! so i leveled it up awhile, and realized that wow these EAT are not as "E" as i thought they would be , time went on i decided to try Warshade, again basically the same as a PB so meh! Blue Side EAT lost my interest very quickly. So i got my first Red Side to 50 and tried out those EAT and i realized omg i am so glad i really like the other AT because the Epic ones are garbage on both sides... and then i thought maybe they will be good for pvp, come to find out EAT are horrible in pvp compared to the other AT, i say stop the pretense and make the current "EAT" a regular AT available at lvl 1 and start over and create new EAT that are truly Epic.
And Peacebringers and Warshades play completely differently! PBs are steadier but slower-leveling, completely self-contained, they feel blapper-y in human form. Warshades have high highs and lower lows, they're dependent on enemies around them to up their output, and feel more scraptroller-y in human form.
And I don't even know what to tell you about the VEATS. If you think a Widow or Bane Spider is "garbage"? I really don't know where your criteria are. I have one of each, and they're monstrously awesome. -
This is true, but then it should only affect you once you've rescued the ally and if the ally is actually following you. It shouldn't be triggered by ally factions in battles or ambushes (they'll killsteal anyway) and it shouldn't be triggered if you haven't even rescued the ally yet.

Quote:Ah, personal preference, got it. Like I said before, you prefer certain builds and styles of play. That's great, everybody does! What you don't seem to quite get, though, is that other people have (sometimes drastically) different preferences for builds/playstyles. And that is why some of the content is "unfun" for you. Because it is fun for someone else.True. And when those things drop, I will see if I already have the salvage, and if so make them off and slot them. But I don't really bother buying stuff for the defenders or controllers I have. The merits they make are spent on other characters. I don't fuss at making IO set builds for them. Mostly they are slotted with generic IOs made in the process of badging. This is what I meant.
This is their subsidy; they don't solo in AE either, so they have no tickets.
Blasters are an in between thing. I don't dislike playing them, but I don't solo them either. I do tend to think of team support when building a blaster; most have stealth of some sort and teleport friend.
And that's the last I'll say about that, because this thread went circular a while ago and I'm getting dizzy. -
Quote:I agree about the costume pieces; they should be changed so you can unlock them solo (Defeat x Cimeroran traitors for the Roman armor, for instance, or even just finishing the in-zone story arcs).as long as I can solo the incarnate levels AND GET THE NEW COSTUME PIECES SOLO I'll be happy and support this game forever. It IS BS though that they give away the epics at level 20 now and still lock these costume pieces up in group content. For group related content they should give group rewards to benefit that kind if play. Costume pieces should not part of the group stuff. Especially again when some of us can't play until LATE LATE LATE hours, and want these things on multiple characters/servers. It's just too difficult and it makes me want to look elsewhere when investing my money in gaming. If anything they should sell those pieces at a higher fee on the store, where I'd purchase them.
I love this game but I don't want to see it have an end game of grouping to get things/hit "60." WoW does that better and I'd just go play that then where people are on ALL the time. I like CoH because I don't have to group and can relax. I have yet to get a purple or afford it (with the other sets coming first) and I've been playing since day 1 of this game. I don't even spend money in the tailor or ever really have. I'm pretty set on most of my costumes, and am wise about how I manage my influence/infamy.
However, if you've been playing from day 1, shouldn't you have a zillion vet tailor tokens? I know I do, and I actually change up costumes quite a bit! -
Quote:I'll have you know that my defenders, my controllers, and my few blasters are plenty damn active and participatory. Not once do they feel "boring" to me. You know what I think is boring? Running into a mob, punch-punch-punch-dead, run to the next mob, lather rinse repeat. While I have dutifully made those characters for the sake of the team, the power sets and builds don't really interest me. I played them, but they seem annoying or idle before you run into the next named boss, and it feels like they were powerlevelled regardless of how much they actually contribute in fact. They also sit at the bottom of the feed trough when set IOs are passed around.
I prefer to be a participant rather than a spectator. My purely subjective impression is that the game is developing a bias against characters with an active play style. Recluse, Ghost Widow, Romulus, Reichsman, Lord Winter .... I see a pattern here. I'm probably going to be told I'm hallucinating here again.
And "bottom of the feed trough when set IOs are passed around"? What does that even mean? Some of the best cheap IO sets are for immobs, sleeps, or other control/buff/debuff powers.
I get it: you love playing melee ATs. That's fine, and it is, as you say, purely subjective. What you're not understanding is that any AT can have an "active playstyle", and that it's a good thing that the content in the game is diversified so that no one AT can just steamroll through everything solo. Every AT and powerset has things they're good at, and things they're weak to. That is by design and it is a good design.
Stop generalizing and realize that it's your own narrow thinking that's causing these problems for you, not the game. -
Quote:So because there exists content that is actually challenging (not impossible) for melee ATs, your conclusion is that it was not meant to be played by them? The Vanguard were just brought in as a further example. I suspect that the Vanguard content was simply not meant to be played by melee ATs.
If you don't like the arc, don't play it. But don't generalize everyone else who plays melee ATs into that box. Some of them, I know for a fact, were thrilled with the fact that they couldn't just steamroll through Vanguard, practically AFK the whole time, like they can with 90% of the rest of the game. -
Quote:So you get Nemesis Automatons as henchmen?Staff Use is the Heroic equivalent of Masterminds.
You start out with a budget for recruitment and some basic HR skills and by level 5 should have hired staff to do all your crime fighting (and post-event paperwork) for you. -
there are other new powersets "on the whiteboard" that will make it into future expansions, including staff use
Emphasis mine! -

Quote:Just wanted to comment on this part. You can put down traps while hovering, you just have to hover down to the floor to do it.Whatever travel power is fine except hover/fly since I don't want to have to keep turning hover off to put down traps, although I suppose AS/Fly would not be to bad since I mostly just use ninja run anyway.
I usually angle myself downwards so I'm skimming the floor when I hit mobs, then drop Poison Trap/Acid Mortar, then back up and over my pets and start spamming caltrops/webnade. -

Quote:The MMORPG article says "starting on March 2" for preorders, so I'm guessing that's when we can start pre-ordering.So... preorders (especially for GR:C) will hit the store when?
And Khelds (and those lesser arachnos things) are open at 20 now, I'm assuming, since this doesn't sound like "announcing a new EAT" (unfortunately.)
My question: Will we be able to pre-order the "Complete Edition" at that time also? -
Dark Blast: Sad graphics that make the blasts feel even weaker than they are, which is impressive.
Earth Control: Hate the graphics; you can't customize these like you can Stone Armor, can you?
Also, I just can't get into doms, which is weird since I have more controllers than anything else and it should be like a high-damage controller. Though, I haven't played them since the update, so I guess I should roll another one. Any suggestions? -
Hmm...gives me an idea for a new alt:

Well, my two main trollers right now (besides my 41 mind/kin and 30 mind/storm) are a 30 plant/kin and a 22 grav/rad.
Of the four combos, I think my favorite to play right now is the plant/kin, with the grav/rad close behind. Nothing quite like Seeds > Roots > Carrion Creepers! Unless, of course, it's Radiation Infection > Crushing Field > Propel... -
I have justifications for some of my characters for those. Banshee Diva, my sonic/psi blaster, has given command performances throughout the world; her jetpack was a gift from an enamored Captain Castillo, she charmed the Nemesis staff off of a Fake Nemesis that wanted her autograph, etc. They're fun to think up, even if nobody asks!
