In my experience the people that make these "the servers are dead" threads are the ones who have been put on everyones ignore list on whichever low pop server they are on. We actively use tools like /hide, /gignore, and Notes to avoid players that are a pain in the butt.
The smaller the community the easier it is to tick everyone off. It's also one of the reasons Freedom has a larger share of obnoxious players. The jerks move there to find people who don't know them. -
The comment wasn't referring to anyone in this thread, but I have encountered far too many of those individuals ingame at the AE. Their behaviour is one of the main reasons I only go there if a friend wants to run something.
Nope.Quote:Yet you feel offended that some of us think there could be improvements to this "made-up" fun game that we all play and that we must be "out-of-touch" with reality for even suggesting an improvement.
I just don't see changing the ticket system as suggested as an improvement. We have a better chance of retaining customers if we can lure players out of the AE where they can see everything else the game has to offer. The longer they subscribe the more money the game makes. The more money the game makes, the longer I get to play. -
Quote:Yes I have used it. I may only use the AE when a friend wants to do those types of missions, but I am quite familiar with AE tickets and the random rolls we get when we use them. I love the ticket system because it gives us some control over the type of random drops we can get, but still keeps the drops random.Have you ever used the gold random ticket roll on a consistent basis ?
Regardless of what I get the drops are all free. I didn't spend a single inf to get them. It's all inf in my pocket.
The tickets are free ergo the drops from trading in the tickets are free.
I'm not one of those twisted little individuals that gets his panties in a bunch over how many imaginary tickets it takes to get imaginary loot to sell for imaginary money.
Tickets, merits, recipes, salvage, enhancements, inspirations all drop for free and regardless of what I ultimately end up selling them for, I still have more than when I started. (Actually I should say it's regardless of what someone ends up paying for them because I never sell anything on the market for more than 1 inf)
I know the difference between a make believe fun time game and reality. -
Quote:If you think it's possible to delete RMT coffers you are deluding yourself. The best thing that could happen is depleting the RMT coffers, driving up their prices radically.
1. To start off these companies are criminal organisations. They aren't making money selling gold/inf. They are making money committing credit card fraud and identity theft.
2. If you've bothered to pay any attention to their spam you would know that the less people using their services causes them to lower their prices not raise them.
3. They work every game possible. So what if sales drop in CoH. They'll just lower their prices to the point where some gullible twit is dumb enough to give them his credit card and personal info thinking he's getting a great bargain.
Just to give you some perspective. You can ask anyone who participated in the Star Trek Online open beta. The RMT sites were spamming that game before it even went live. Everyone in the beta knew that the servers were being erased before the game went live and we would all be starting over from scratch. Nothing we acquired would carry over.
Guess what? Players were still getting caught and banned for buying from the RMT sites DURING the open beta! One players account was hacked and used by an RMT site to advertise on their forums.
There will always be plenty of people willing to use their services. -
Quote:Ask and you shall receive. Tho I did edit the explanation on how to search.vehicles will not work correctly with this game. watch how the cars and trucks travel and you will get an idea of what i mean. if not, someone will post a very informative post of why they won't.

The body of the cut and paste reply is the way it is because we've seen these arguments numerous times before. They're a summary of the salient points that come up each time. They are not here to insult you, make you feel stupid or otherwise "bring you down a peg." Instead, they are meant as instruction and information. Please read through the points and the explanation behind them to see the issues that are commonly brought up in response. They may not always match your suggestion 100% - in fact, you may have explained around one or two of them - but they're there for consideration and refinement of your idea.
Yes, I do look forward to the time, with some of these suggestions, that someone not only addresses all the points, but does so exceptionally well. It'll probably be added to the end of the cut/paste reply, with credit. For now, though, read and consider the points. They really are just there to help you, and move discussion along to help ideas evolve.
If you're going to see this and say an "evil forum vet is just shooting down your idea," or "You think you're the last word because of your post count," you're wrong. Heck, if you say the second, you've just worried more about my post count than I have in the last four plus years. Tongue-in-cheek comments in here are meant as humor, not put downs.
The subject at hand: Vehicles.
Vehicles as travel powers. This gets brought up a lot.
Short answer, don't expect it.
Long answer:
There are a lot of problems with the idea.
1. Movement.
Forward and back, even turning - ok. But you can do things that a vehicle can't - such as strafe (direct side to side or angular movement.) It doesn't work with a vehicle. There are also issues such as drift and "realistic" handling. We can go side to side, as mentioned, and make immediate right angle turns. Cars... not so much.
2. Movement, part 2.
Go stand in the road. No, not you personally. Take your character out and stand in the road, if you're heroside. Or even in the path of civilians. What happens? You get pushed. While not as big an issue with a motorcycle, perhaps, a car would have issues. What happens if two cars meet head on - yours and an NPC, or yours and another player's? Do you just pass through each other? Would you be satisfied with that very odd result? Or would you get stuck? How about those NPCs, can they walk and push your car, or are they walking through it? Neither answer is very satisfying, and intelligent, dynamic pathing is too computationally expensive.
3. Terrain.
Not every place has roads, or even makes sense for "off roading." Go look at Founder's Falls. Go look at Crey's Folley. Or Eden. Try to get to the north islands in Talos. What, do you have a kubelwagen? Look at the Pit in Sharkshead. Try to use your travel power (car) to get up to some of the doorways in high caves. Cars and motorcycles would be more like Superspeed - horizontal movement, period. And look - I'll be blunt - flat out *stupid* tied with, say, Combat Jumping or Superjump.
4. Combat.
You get ambushed on the way. How do you fight? Just have your powers blast out of the rolled up windows? How do you buff or debuff? EVERY power would need a new animation. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Then you want people with motorcycles instead of cars. Redo ALL the animations AGAIN. And they still wouldn't make sense - how do you use Footstomp in a car? Or Stalagmites?
5. Customizing.
Yeah, it would come up. Not everyone would want a sports car, or a mid-70s Buick boat, or an exotic, or a minivan, or whatever else.
6. Making "sense."
This was touched on in terrain - how do you get across water? How about the Shadow Shard? And if you want downright ridiculous looking, go do the heroside 25-34 Respec. Look at the Sky Skiffs inside of rooms or the reactor room. It makes no sense and looks *ridiculous.* Something that, yes, the devs try to avoid.
That's just a quick overview of why vehicles as generally envisioned aren't a spectacular idea for a travel power.
Further discussion
This I think merits a bit of extra commentary, honestly.
"Vehicles" covers a lot of different ground for different people. Some only consider cars/jets/motorcycles vehicles. Others add jetpacks, wings and the like. Much of the above considers cars and similar sized vehicles, with nods to motorcycle type vehicles.
Jetpacks and such, I don't see happening as travel powers. As costume options for Flight? Or as invented pieces that interact with Fly, similar to wings? Absolutely - but they don't need to be a separate travel power for that. I'm all for more jetpack and wing (or combination) designs. Besides, there are so many "temp" jetpacks, I don't see introducing yet another one as really being feasable - just my opinion.
But vehicles - cars, specifically - as a travel power, have issues.
One way to have them "somewhat" work.
For all that, I know some people *would* still like to pull up in front of a mission. So how do we do it?
A temporary power, based on the same tech from the Mac/Valkyrie pack Mission Teleporter. The temporary power would:
(a) be an invention - dropping from enemies. (A reward, because you saved... well, we'll get to that,)
(b) be a single use each time - you can only hold one at a time, not one of each, one total.
(c) use rarely used salvage, because... it's rarely used, and cheap. No Luck Charms here.
(d) come in multiple varieties.
How does this get around the various issues?
Terrain - It doesn't pass terrain. It just arrives.
It follows the same 'rules' as the mission teleporter - it's not indoors, doesn't go to contacts, etc. Just mission doors.
Customizing - It's not "your" vehicle. It's a temp power. You've called a cab, limo, or other transport.
Power animation - since you're skipping the space in between, no powers can be used 'til you arrive anyway.
The varieties?
- Limo: Stereotypical slightly stretched black limo.
- Checker cab: The classic yellow cab. -
Quote:I'm saying the AE tickets are for random rolls and don't need to be changed. If you want to pick and choose what recipes you get you can earn merits. The most expensive one there is only 275 merits. Are you saying it could not be better ? AE is PERFECT by your implied words ? I don't think your saying that. But it sure is the impression I am getting.
The system is balanced. If someone insists on limiting his gaming experience to just the AE then he has to settle for random rewards with AE tickets. However if he wants to cherrypick his rewards he has to participate in the rest of the game and earn merits.
People who experience everything the game has to offer are more likely to stay as customers. -
AE tickets are working as intended no reason to change anything.

Quote:Are there going to be Free For All PvP servers? I know a lot of MMoRPGs in the past have attempted this and it's either a hit or miss for the players.
With the addition of Villains being able to enter Paragon City and Heroes able to enter the Rogue Isles, it would make sense to actually have FFA PvP servers and possibly safe zones or safe areas.
I'm not asking for opinions on whether or not this is a good idea, although I don't mind discussions about it either. I just want to know if whether or not the Devs have mentioned FFA PvP servers.
Thanks!
I don't think you understand the concept of redemption/fallen hero. Heroes and villains will not be able to fight each other outside of established PvP zones. A villain coming to Paragon City for redemption will be doing heroic missions in penance for his crimes. He won't be fighting heroes. By that same token a hero that falls from grace will go to the Rogue Islands to continue on his path to villainy and not to beat up bad guys. There is no PvP involved. -
Quote:I already explained how you can search for devs posts in another thread. The balls in your court to do your own legwork.Yea I'm sorry I have tried to use the search.. I tried farming is okay, farming is allowed. I even tried just farming, that came up with TONS of results. But I don't seem to find it.. Maybe you can point me to the right search term or the term and forum associated with it.. Or a link maybe..
Thanks in advance.. -
Quote:The answer to that still seems to be to make very, very expensive vendors for things that people want anyhow. Make a salvage vendor that sells salvage for 1000x the normal cost: 250,000 for common, 1,000,000 for uncommon, 5,000,000 for rare. Make a recipe vendor that sells recipes for 10,000x the normal cost: 100,000,000 for a rare recipe at level 50, 50,000,000 for an uncommon one. Allow people to buy respecs in-game with enough inf. Make some powerful but temporary buffs that are expensive. Let people buy titles. Let people trigger special events by spending enough, perhaps on a timer.
The important thing about vendors is that the inf is removed from the game, unlike the market. Give players a compelling enough reason, and they'll spend inf that way.
The best that will happen from these ideas is that players will ignore those vendors and continue to use the market, AE tickets, and merits to get what they want and nothing will change.
At worst you will be encouraging players to use RMT sites to get the inf needed to buy stuff from those vendors.
I really don't see the devs shooting the game in the foot by implementing something that would give players a reason to do things that will get their accounts banned. -
Quote:I would be happy to read a link related to some dev posting such comments.
As you have been advised in the past, learn to use the search feature and you'll eventually find the dev posts you are looking for.
Meanwhile please continue to post. We'd miss having the chance to laugh at your attempts to troll threads.

Just for clarification. The reason CO's F2P model is less successful has nothing to do with the F2P model itself. It's less successful because the game sucks. If you polish a turd you just get a shiny turd.

It just dawned on me what this is really all about. He just wants unlimited access to the enhancements in the Going Rogue Gamestop Pre-Order perks.
Quote:Exclusive Enhancements: The five exclusive Enhancements increase the damage and recharge value of a character power and have a small chance to trigger an additional ability. The Enhancements and their additional abilities are:
Will of the SeersChance for minor psi damage.
Clockwork EfficiencyChance for minor energy damage.
Might of the EmpireChance for knockdown.
Resistance TacticsChance for minor smash damage.
Syndicate TechniquesChance for minor lethal additional ability triggered.
These Enhancements are only available to newly created characters. Each new character will receive one of each Enhancement. They cannot be sold, stacked, or traded. These Enhancements are equivalent to a Security Level 20 Dual Origin Enhancement. -
-
TO's, DO's, SO's, HO's etc are NOT obsolete. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them obsolete. I have plenty of characters the only use those enhancements and no one knows the difference. IO's are an optional feature players can choose to use if they want to go that route. The game is just as fun with regular enhancements as it is with IO's.

Quote:And once GR hits players won't even have the excuse that it's hard to get stuff on the market redside because everything will be merged. It's far more likely for a player to get to SO range and not know they can buy SOs from stores (I have personally seen this many times in new players, up to and including level 30-something characters subsisting off of drops alone, or even buying TOs from the regular quartermasters redside (that was fun to explain the terribad idea of to that newbie) above DO levels) than it is for the player to not know the market is there.
-
The only people in this game that are suffering from a lack of influence are the AE babies that rush to get powerleveled to level 50 then realize they can't afford to buy enhancements because they didn't spend any time earning any.
A regular player be he vet or newb has more inf than they know what to do with by level 10. -
It doesn't matter how many months you've been playing.
It doesn't matter if you completed the Loyalty program.
And it doesn't matter if you pre-purchased the game.
You may have qualified for just one or all three requirements and still not get invited to the Going Rogue closed beta.
If your account isn't in good standing you aren't getting into any closed beta.

No one here can tell you if you've been black listed.
Furthermore, the devs can deny all of us access until the very last minute before switching over to open beta. They never said how much time we'd have access to closed beta, just that (those of us with accounts in good standing who met the requirements) we'd be invited before it closed.
Edit: Oh and whining about not getting is believed on the forums to be a sure way to get yourself taken off the list. Personally I don't know if that's true. -
Quote:To Forbin and Soul: I barely have $10 left over from spending on what I NEED to live. I can't sell plasma because they can't get a needle near me without me becoming 'a risk' as my doctors say. I totally freak out over needles to the point where they can't safely stick me with one. I need the internet for my schooling, I pay half of the TV bill, it's split between me and my Grandma. Hell, without my grandma I'd be royally screwed over because then I'd be living on the streets. My job doesn't pay much, I just get enough to pay for what I need.
As I said, I'm not saying everyone can't afford to pay the fee but I'm not saying everyone can either. Believe it or not, some people have situations where they can't pay game subscription fees. Thats why things like 'Private' Servers exists for some game. If there was a free to play superhero game, I'd be playing that.
Champions Online uses the neverending free trial bit, but I can't play that because it kills my out of date computer. So City of Heroes is my only option.
To Neon: I don't feel right 'trial hopping' and I believe 'trial hoppers' wouldn't be liked very much by the rest of the City of Heroes community.
I do empathize with your situation. That's why I tried to offer some suggestions and came back to defend you when another post sounded a little dismissive.
I'm really sorry the blood idea won't work for you. It's literally saved my bacon on a number of occasions when I couldn't stretch my disability to cover my monthly expenses because of unforseen emergencies. (like you I also have seniors in my house I help take care of)
A while back our trial accounts were being badly abused by RMT sites and the devs had sound reasons for implementing restrictions. Those restrictions have been very effective.
I also play several games that are F2P or don't require a monthly sub (DDO, Guild Wars, Warhammer Online) and they are constantly hammered by RMT spam so I don't see our devs reversing their restrictions.
They may however modify them if the benefits outweigh any negative repercussions. For example we've been trying to get them to consider allowing people on trials to respond to tells, and we've been suggestion ways to make trial accounts easier to spot so we can identify new players and help them out and make their time on the trials more enjoyable. -
Glad to help even if it's just a little. I personally reduce everything on my screen. I have a 21" widescreen monitor and setting the display settings to 16??x1050 and reducing all the windows to 80% has really opened up my field of vision. My power trays, chatbox, map, & targeting are in the upper and lower corners. and I get the feeling like I'm seeing a lot more of the game. I do it all thru the graphics controls under Options.
-
Quote:I wouldn't say that. I'm sure if we put our minds to it we could think of a couple unique situations where it might have some validity. And it never hurts to give someone some friendly advice on how he might be able to afford it. He may not have thought of all the things he can do or be aware of some options that can get him the cash he needs. The "I can't afford the subscription fee" argument never holds water.
It's not like he came here ranting and frothing at the mouth like that one guy last year who angrily told us that he couldn't afford the game on top of what he spent on alcohol, gambling, and porn.
