I just don't think Jetpacks have been a priority.

Quote:Uhm Adeon all they have to do is design a jetpack graphic where part of the jet pack imbeds into the avatar the same way Wings do. The Jetpack thrusters can easily sit far enough away from the back so they don't look like they are being swallowed up by a huge avatar, and yet on a smaller avatar you would see more of the part of the jetpack that is flush with the back. It just looks bulkier on a smaller avatar. As I understand it the problem isn't selecting the attach point it's due to the way that the pieces interact with the body. The wings naturally imbed themselves in the body so the fact that they are sitting at varying distances from the characters actual "back" isn't really noticeable. However for jetpacks to look good they really need to rest fluch against the character's back which means that the distance of the costume part fromt he attach point varies based on the character's body type and size.
The jets don't have to fit snug against the back. Heck they could even do a helicopter backpack.

The OP's forum account wasn't created until January 2010 so he couldn't have possibly made this post on this account in 2004. Sure he could have cut and pasted a post made on another account from 2004 but he still only did that yesterday.

Quote:The current CoH manual has 181 pages while the current CoV manual has 152 pages. One of the first things I did when I got the game was go to bed "with a good book" and read the manual from top to bottom. It's not a hard read, really. It's all of about 50 A6 pages, a lot of which are taken up partially or entirely by unnecessarily large pictures.
I'm sorry Sam but you haven't read the manuals recently. They aren't that far out of date. They include information up to Issue 14.Quote:That said, the manual is so out of date it would be pointless to try and update it. It simply is not relevant. I still love seeing Elude described as a power which prevents you from attacking (I assume "only affecting self") when that wasn't the case even by the time I got the game, and I've had the game since a month after release.

All that needs to be added is the major changes that were added in Issues 16, 18, and 19.
Actually printing an official Game/Strategy Guide like Prima once did

is pointless because this game is constantly evolving with the addition of each free issue and if the guides aren't selling it makes no sense to throw away money on publishing them and any updates. It makes much more sense for them to just update the online guides every couple of issues which everyone can download for free.
I wouldn't object to a complete rewrite tho. It would be nice if the current manuals included info like the Prima guide once did. -
Only way you could be cooler than us Leos is if you were a Velociraptor with a Death Star.

Quote:This. It's been bought up many times (along with quivers and scabbards). There are apparently issues with making them so that they look good and as such it's unknown if we will ever get them. People want thema nd the devs know that, it just comes down to can they figure out a way to do it that looks good.
If you've ever noticed how the few backpack temp powers look like they are embedded in the back of very large/huge characters, that's the problem. -
Alien needs to be digitally remastered and the big scary alien replaced with something more politically correct and fuzzy. Like Barney.

Still a Leo, but according to those other signs I'm a Leo with a Death Star. Rawr!

Quote:Wrong. Their words aren't annoying. What's annoying is that their agenda is being enforced by our employers and government. My favorite thing about people that rant against political correctness is that being annoyed by political correctness validates it. How? Keep your eye on the ball, kids:
You're annoyed by their words, so you communicate with your own words that words are "only words." If they were "only words", these "Proudly Anti-PC People" should have found alternate pronouns far easier to ignore by now.
Unfortunately, it seems that words do carry implicit and subtle meanings which can upset someone. So...
We are offended we hurt you with our thoughtless word choice and will be sensitive to your preferences in the future. :P -

Quote:Not all roleplayers write up bios. Some of my characters have bios while others don't. Depends on how hooked I get on the character.* Thanks to those who recommended Virtue as a good roleplaying server. I plunked my ten bucks down and transferred my main character there. Time will tell, but already I'm seeing a lot more people who have characters with backgrounds, which is a good sign. (Sometimes I like to just stand near the subway and read people's backgrounds as they pass. This game really needs a spectator mode.) For the record, the servers I tried previous to this were Liberty, Victory, and Protector.
[quote]* To those who have expressed preferences for alternative comics outside the capes and leotards variety, I like those too: Sandman, Maus, the Invisibles, anything by Robert Crumb, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Promethea, and so on. It's just that, like a lot of folks in the alternative and independent comics scene whose work I respect, like Grant Morrison and and Alan Moore, I also have a nostalgic love/hate relationship with the Golden and Silver ages of comics -- Superman + red kryptonite = Ant-head Superman! (Read Grant Morrison's brilliant Flex Mentallo for his psychological explanation for the weird, psychedelic nature of that Red Superman/Blue Superman stuff from the Silver Age.) Morrison in particular loves to deconstruct the Golden and Silver Ages, but always with respect.
Let's see I've always liked Sgt. Rock, Haunted Tank, G.I. Robot, Knights of the Dinner Table, Judge Dredd, Men Of War, Wierd War, G.I. Combat, Rogue Trooper, Marshal Law, X-Men, Samuree, Ghost Rider, Tigers of Terra, Appleseed . . .
It's a delicate topic that can easily be taken the wrong way so unless you are very careful on how you bring it up it's probably best to not say anything. As far as the bug reports go, have a blast. If we don't report the in game typos the gm's and devs won't know they made them.Quote:* I didn't realize it was against etiquette to point out typos for people. In most contexts people regard it as a courtesy. I know I do. I had no idea that it was verboten here, and I'll certainly stop doing it. I've been filing bug reports on typos and grammatical errors in the game text too; should I stop doing that? Am I annoying the devs?
Yeah MMORPG's do have to cater somewhat to video game community to be successful but I think this game is closer to the traditional PnP RPG's than any other.Quote:* A lot of my disappointment, I think, comes from what I realize now were unrealistic expectations. I've played all kinds of pen and paper superhero RPGs over the years (including GURPS, Champions, TMNT, DC Heroes, and -- my favourite -- Villains and Vigilantes), and I guess I thought CoX would be like a computerized version of that. I had also tried Champions Online before I decided on CoX instead, which has a much more Silver Age feel to it, so I assumed CoX would be more of the same. I think what I expected was a multi-player version of Freedom Force (since that's what CoX resembles on the surface if you have only gameplay videos by which to go). Collecting "treasure" and backpack management weren't what I had in mind when I joined.
People will agree with almost everything you mentioned here. I think the only touchy topic you listed is the vehicles. If you use the Search tool you can probably find a thread over in Suggestions where someone has listed a cut and paste of the cons and why they shouldn't be added. But if you can think of solutions to the cons feel free to post a reply. Fresh ideas are always welcome.Quote:After all those complaints, I think I should also list some of the things that I think CoX does right. Top of the list, absolute bloody first, is flying. The sense of flying in CoX is utterly thrilling and feels exactly the way it does in dreams. Sometimes I just fly around the skyscrapers in Steel Canyon and feel mellow. I think if the game consisted of nothing but that, I might still pay money to play it. Also on the list of top things (which is odd, since it's also on my list of complaints) is the costume system. I'd really like to see more body types (where are the Blobs, where are the Gigantas, where are the Doll Mans, where are the She-Hulks?), vehicles, a lot more hats, better conforming for chest props, and, and, and... but I suspect I could (and would) do that no matter how many options that gave. The variety is pretty impressive, and I'm sorely tempted to purchase some of those expansion packs.
Since you're on Virtue now may I recommend you consider joining "The Cape Radio" as one of your global channels. They are a nice group of players and they have their own online radio station.Quote:PS: If any of y'all are on Virtue, say hello to Union Power, the One-Man Picket Line, when you see me.

I can't offer more help than that right now as my video card died and I can't play until I save up enough cash to replace it. But good luck on Virtue. I hope you enjoy your time there. -
Yeah but that's not limited to low level content in primal CoH. All the original story arcs are like that from 1-50.

Quote:It really doesn't matter. The point was that when it's necessary the military has examples of promoting people to high ranking positions that are young in comparison to their fellow senior enlisted/officers.Ha Ha, Bombs-Away LaMay

Are any of these guys post WWII? (since I'm to lazy to look)
Is it true that it rarely happens during times of peace? Yes, but in times of peace the military has the time to train/retrain it's personnel. That isn't the case in times of war.
It's also true that in times of peace the military gets scaled back, and if a conflict arises that necessitates an expansion of the existing military, those positions will get filled many times by younger personnel, especially if the proceeding peacetime was decades in length. -

Quote:I simply assumed the OP misspelled "she" and "her" and was totally baffled by "iggy". Which had me thinking that the OP had a lot of nerve to correct someone elses spelling when the OP can't spell simple pronouns.Really... the made-up pronouns hearken back to the 80's. I haven't seen them attempted to be used by anyone for 20 years.
I though the OP was using German pronouns.
It wasn't until others mentioned those pronouns origins that I realized they weren't misspelled. But I must be honest, in my 40+ years I have never seen nor heard of them being used before today. -
Quote:I'm a new player here at CoX, although I've been MUDing since the early 80s. It also marks the first time I've paid money to play an MMO. As a huge comic book fan who started reading back when they were still 20 cents each, I was really excited about playing CoX. Imagine my disappointment, then, in what I've experienced.
The first disappointment is that the game feels like a ghost town. I will see a handful of people occasionally, but what few people are around all tend to be level 50s -- and this brings me to the part which annoys me most. The vast majority of the level 50s I've encountered seem to treat this game as just another kill-the-monster, get-the-treasure MMO where the idea is to min/max your power potential. They create stupid or boring names (some of them don't even bother to think of superhero names, they use what appears to be a name chosen randomly from a phone book), and can't be bothered to create even the most basic background. Reading through the various fora here, people seem to be interested solely in obsessing over "toons" and "shards" and "IO builds" and which "AV" slots out best and other arcane trivia. You could replace the supervillains with orcs or Imperial stormtroopers and I doubt they would even notice the difference -- or care if they did.
I tried three or four different servers, just to make sure it wasn't a local phenomenon, and I've experienced the same thing on each one. I'm not a fanatical roleplayer, but I'm frankly baffled that on a game which is supposed to be about comic books, no one seems to have any interest in comic books. It's not helped that the costume creation system appears to be geared toward awful 90s "Dark Age" comics; you can get 200 different types of ugly spiky things for your shoulders, but try getting tassles on your cape or a swashbuckling tabard or animal heads other than "snarling death monster" -- Mr. Talky Tawny is not welcome here.
The final straw for me may have been the exchange I had last night with a "50" where I sent hir a message that sie had a few typos in hir background, and helpfully provided the corrections. Sie replied that if sie wanted someone to edit hir background text sie would ask over Global, and that I was now welcomed to (and I quote) "iggy." I was taken aback by the sheer sour rudeness, and it ruined all my sense of enjoyment for the evening.
This is only my second month playing, but I'm already questioning whether I want to continue.

Quote:Certainly not you.1. Who's to say it would not be a positive effect on the player population in general.
I don't have to retype what was already posted by Memphis_Bill, and Adeon Hawkwood.Quote:As far as the general population goes you have not given one good reason why implementing what I suggested would be bad.
They aren't intricate nor are they obscure. They are readily available for everyone to use. You chose not to use them. That's not a problem with the game. that's a problem with the biological interface that is found between your chair and your keyboard.Quote:2. Just because I'm not into intricacies of writing macros does not make me Lazy nor does not being a computer programer nor does finding better things to do with my time, like play the game instead of try to figure out how to program obscure code provided by the developers for people who are interested in doing that sort of thing.
